It's a lift kit that levels the truck. Not sure how they meausre but say it would lift 4" in front and 2" in the rear. Makes the truck sit flat w/o a load. Or blind everyone else on the road when loaded. Usually the front is 2" more lift than the rear.

And yep, she's a pretty one.

Those seats are kind of like the bench in the 150. Let me tell you, that armrest doesn't recline back and can get in the way when the other sides are reclined back...

What did the laptop do, not do? (I take donations of used computer equipment. )

Go for an LCD flat panel to replace the monitor. Costco has/had a 17 or 19 inch ViewSonic flat panel for a good price ($350 or so.)

We go to a place called Deer Creek. Its down southfork road out of twaine Harte. All I remember is you go under the arch in twaine Harte and then turn left on SouthFork Road. 3 miles until you cross the american river and stay to the left and follow that road for 4 miles. Staying to the right when you get to the secone bridge.

Well, that's SOMEWHAT related. I think he meant like not even in the ballpark or so. My friend has his BA/BS in Journalism and is a System Administrator (i.e. computer guy) for an insulated duct company and sidelines as an Information Systems instructor for Reedley College. Seems that Journalism major is kind of an underwater basket weaving degree. He was a computer science major...

Wow, it's quietville on this thread. Where is everyone? I think I hear crickets...

Well, I de-winterized the 5th wheel tonight. I plan on going camping next weekend. I took it for a test spin tonight with the new F-350. I couldn't even tell it was behind me. The bad thing is, I forgot to put the TV on the floor...it took a spill off the counter.

The trailer brake is much different than my old truck...I can't figure out what the auxillary switches are for?.?.?

You probably have the Tow Command integrated brake controller. The switches next to it are upfitter switches so they probably don't go to anything. They are there in case you add extra stuff that you need switches for. Then it all matches instead of carving into that pretty dash.

The Tow Command is supposed to completely rock over any brake controller. Completely integrated with the ABS so it will pulse the trailer if the ABS kicks in as well. RTFM!

Oh yeah and that sucks on the TV. Means you need one of them fancy LCD jobs now.

Yeah. I went and looked at one and test drove one at Madera Ford today but that thing was beat. Had 69k miles and was a 2003 and the paint looked like crap. It did get up to 90 pretty quik though. Also found another at a carmax up north thats only got 12k thats a 2004.. Looks to be in nice shape...

I was considering 06 GTs before looking at lightnings but, this way i can still haul my quad..

You're getting a PSD right? Bran new. What's $50K? lol

My coworker has gone to the dark side. He traded in his '97 F250 HD for a Chevy 1/2 ton. The old 460 just wasn't cutting it with the gas prices and he doesn't really tow any weight anymore. Truck had 60K on it. The service manager at the local dealer wanted the truck for his daughter. Guess he wanted to keep her close to home. LOL

BUMMER!!

Posted by: HappaRap

Question about the Diesel,

I was told that you need to let it warm up longer ( than a gas engine ) and after you've driven it, you need to let it idle for a minute or so before shutting it down.

Any thoughts on this?

Posted by: Trasher

The biggest reason to let them idle before turning off is to let them cool down. This is true of any vehicle with a turbo. There is a lot of heat built up in there and it can cook the oil and you might have a dry start up which will lead to wear. It would not hurt to let any motor idle for a bit before stopping.

Warm ups are about the same for gas or diesel. You need to make sure that the engine is warmed up before putting a lot of stress on it. Internal engine parts need to expand so the tolerances will be correct before they pull a load, etc.

Although Im sort of leaning towards a 4dr 1 ton with a 460V8. Is this worth considering at all? I can find the same basic truck with a 460 and less than 1/2 the miles for about 1/2 its price. Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks, MWQ.

Mileage seems high, but it is a PSD. Engine is good for AT LEAST 300K. Transmission I would have checked out well. Your new trailer is pretty light, so just about anything would pull it. The PSD would never know it's there. And it would probably get 2x the mileage. Coworker was getting 8MPG with his 460. PSDs should be good for 2x that much.

Posted by: Trasher

That has a lot of miles on it. I just you said it was just for hauling the toys around so either would be fine. The gas won't kill you so much because of it's limited use. I have no idea how far you drag your toys to play so the mileage/condition shouldn't be a big factor if it's just a short drive.

I have to drag toys through the desert and pass a couple of pretty good grades so i would look for a newer hauler, but that's just me

Posted by: mywifesquad

I usualy haul between 120 and 250 miles one way, with a few trips in the 40 mile one way range. I do have plenty of grades to climb no matter where I go.

Do you really think a diesel will get double the mileage B&RW?

I will also be replacing this "new truck" in about 3 years. This is a short term kind of fix. Im not too worried about my F150 hauling the new trailer as much as Im worried about it stopping it.

The 460 is a PIG. And I wouldn't doubt it getting close to 2x the mileage. For just a little more money. You won't have it long enough to make up the price diff, but you will also be selling it and getting that money back out.

One thing the 460 will do is snap exhaust manifold bolts. The motor twists and the bolts just shear. So if you hear an exhaust leak on one, check those.

Here's how you stop that trailer: Tekonsha Prodigy.

Howdy Ya'll!! Just thought I would drop by and say "Hi". Im officially a big sister to another little bro. Im going to put a pic of Jackson in my profile...check him out, he is a cutie (he got my good looks)

What type of mileage should I be getting having 345 miles on my new PSD? Also, are the tires LT275/65R20E and 3.73 gears going to effect mileage? The truck had 240 miles on it when I picked it up, I didn't reset anything and it shows 13.2 mpg, also, I don't know what brand of fuel ( shell, chevron, texaco, ect. ) they filled it with before I took delivery. Just wondering if the mileage gets better as it gets more broken in.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

That seems a little low. But if you've been getting heavy on the foot, possible. It's always best to hand calculate for your mileage. And yes, like any motor, it will get better after break-in. Break-in for a diesel however is MANY thousand miles.

Congrats on the addition to the family DQ.

Thanks for the reply, like I said, the 13.2 was already registered for the 205 or so miles that were already on it, before I took possesion of it. I've only driven it this past 5 days, 20 miles a day and have been babying it. I wonder if you can zero out the mpg and start fresh?

Posted by: Trasher

Use the trip odometer for mileage

That thing has 20's and 3.73's so it will be a bit of a dog off the line but after you get it rollin it should be pretty fair in the mileage department for a truck that size

Yes you can reset the mileage computer. Look in your owner's manual for that information. There's a wealth of info in there. And as they say in the computer world RTFM.

Thanks for the replies, I'll break out the owners manual and read up on it. Been spending most of my free time working on the 700R, getting it ready for our Florence trip in two weeks

Whats the real advantage of a F350 over a F250 if any?

Same payload and towing ability

What do ya'll think?

The 350 has a higher GVWR, hence payload capacity. It's at least 1000lbs. Maybe higher on newer models. This is the same in the difference between the 450 & 550 as well.

'05 and newer they redid the GVWR. Pre-'05 the 250 was good for like 8500 GVWR and the 350 SRW (Single Rear Wheel, as opposed to DRW aka Dually) was 9500. Might have been more, but it was 1000lb diff.

LOL...wanna buy mine? I have an '06 Lariat Crew Cab Turbo Diesel and that thing is a sled compared to the '04 Dodge with a Cummins that I traded in on it. The Ford has to work hard in the hills and has trouble holding its own with an 8K trailer load. The Dodge used to just bellow a bit up the hills and I could even accelerate if I needed to. Miss that Dodge. The Ford has 4500 miles on it and I'm working on a trade this week.

Good points for the Ford, luxury interior, roomy, best seats available, pretty good transmission, tow command system, even those extra 4 aux switches on the dash. Much better in those categories than the Dodge. The Ford is definitely a much nicer truck in many areas.

Bad points, less power, takes almost twice the number of turns of the steering wheel to make a turn (sounds silly but it is a huge driving difference). If you get a Ford bedliner then you can't even get to the tie downs in the bed. Had to cut the holes out just to put a strap on a quad.

Dodge --- Cummins! The Dodge interior is almost austere compared to the Ford but it does have the a$$ to pull heavy trailers up hills.

What really hurt was when my son called the Ford a "Bushmobile" like it should be on a ranch in Texas. Now, that hurt! It's brown so I just call it the "big turd" like the motor home in the movie "RV".

400CatDriver,

Informative post, haven't experienced the pulling downfalls. The only thing I tow with it at this point is a tandem two quad trailer with usually one quad on it. If I do get a trailer, I'll throw the quad in the truck and pull a 26 TT. I've been a Ford guy all my life, besides a 69 Chevelle, the only vehicles I've owned were Ford.

I would have gotten Dodge or Chevy, but, I love the looks of the Ford Truck, inside and out. I think the Duramax with Allison and Cummins are excellent combos, but, I don't like the look of Chevy or Dodge. The PSD with its tranny is the weakest of the three IMO, but because I use it more for driving to work and love a big truck, Ford was my pick.

Truth be told, I've always wanted that type of truck and figured I'd better get one before I have one foot in the grave

Beasore Rd starts on the north side of Bass Lake Beasore Rd. That road goes way up into the mountains back there.

Little Shuteye. If you change back to MAP you can follow the trail back to Central Camp Rd & Beasore Rd. There's a place called Beasore Meadows where my coworkers cabin is. That's more to the north. And Star Lakes...I can't remember how the heck to find that place. LOL

I think it's ok. LJ wasn't impressed however. It's more of a recreation lake, but people do fish it.

Besides, screw the fishing. There's some great riding up in them thar hills! (Miami Trails is less than a 10 minute drive from there to the west.)

You can go through Yosemite from the East side (Lee Vining) on 120, into Yosemite Valley, then 41 south out of the Valley. The falls have been rocking this year. Bass Lake is about an hour south from the Valley Floor. Not that far, but at 25 MPH that's along drive to Wawona.

Found a lightning i like..

Its cheap.. A few issues though. Its got almost 100k miles. and its on its second motor.
"Motor was replaced due to the spark plug issue that ford had on the 99 to
2002 models with the heads not having enough threads and the spark plugs
blowing out if not torqued correctly"..
haha I havent seen it in person yet but a few freinds of mine have and have done some audio work on it..

Now this truck is in Kerman and my dad wants me to ask this guy if he would bring it up here to my mechanic for him to look at it.. Sound reasonable? or is that a rediculous request? I mean if he wants to sell it then sure... It is an hour and a half drive though.... I dunno.....BR>

Hmmm I don't know. The entire motor was changed? Why? All you need to change is the damaged head(s). Sounds like it's been hot rodded to hell, motor was blown. Who knows about the rest of it. LS diff clutches are probably shot. Tranny? (It's the same as in the Eff Two Fiddy 4R100?). Personally, I would RUN. Quickly.

Yes, the trannies are the same but, they last much longer in these trucks...
The diffs are REALLY strong from what ive heard...

The motor could have gone to shiit from what ive read on the lightning boards just from one blown plug.. dunno why or how... But 95% of the time theyre fine.... Im still reading.. THey changed to new heads in 03..

Boss' son's went through the clutch pack in like 60K. Local shop that specializes in rear-ends fixed it. Fearless Gear, iirc. Boss had his in not long ago (late '05) for maintenance. I think they were going to put a near rear cover on with the fins to pull heat out. For some reason I think they weren't able to. Not sure. If the boss is in a good mood tomorrow I'll ask him.

Kind of funny how that would toast the motor. Unless they were idiots and kept driving them. From what I've been told when you lose the plug you know it. They drive like hell...at least the standard 150s with the 4.6. But they don't throw a CEL.

We've had the following blow plugs:
'99 SVT Lightning (second to do it...Ford replaced head under 100K Warranty) 5.4L S/C
'99 Expedition (first one to do it not under 100K warranty...) 5.4L
'01 or '02 F-150 4.6L (TWICE! In like 1-2 weeks time. Different plugs. Our bill on the first. Dealer covered the 2nd one plus the 2nd tow bill (NOT cheap).)

I still think that thing has been hot rodded to hell. Wouldn't want to see you stuck with someone's tired old dog.

The boss loves his. He had a full Bassani exhaust with ceramic headers. The whole works. But had something break in the cat on the right side. Horrid rattle about 3000-3500 RPM. And since that's where the boss likes to drive it... First smog check it was ripped out and back to stock (not CARB approved). When it was stock with open bed (now has a manual Roll-N-Lock) he hit 140 out near Kerman. The rear tires spin on the rims. Great traction on the Eagle F1 GS. But for 250+ a pop (has his new set waiting in the warehouse to be mounted) they BETTER BE.

More engine (including the Cummins 5.9L) are available in Ford F-Series trucks. Just head down to your local Ford Truck dealer. Ask to look at an F-650. Allison 6-speeds too. I think I'd take the CAT 3126B with the Allison. Crew Cab, F-350 dually bed. 4x4 would be nice, but at that point you've topped $100K from a custom shop.

Next flat bed at work will be a 650. Our 450 is getting long in the tooth (120K, '94 with 460 CID). In the shop, AGAIN (A/C died).

Yeah. This truck is the closest i can find to look at that im actually interested in...The rest really ARE beat on... Or are out of my price range....
He told me "I'm the second owner. The original owner told me the way the spark plugs
went it damaged one of the cylinders and it was just cheaper for ford to
replace the motor instead of tearing it down and repairing it."
Dunno what to belive but i have a few freinds that have told me that his truck is in great shape and to take a look at it..
All the others i wanna look at are 5 hours away.. ones in Santa Monica and the others are in LA.. One of them is a Daily driver running mid 12s. With a brand new Ford Long Block with 350 miles and a full warrenty.. Of coarse not sure what the mods do to the warranty. haha

If you want a pig, I know where an F-250 super cab (not crew) 4x4 short bed is. Line-Xed. It does have a tool box in the bed though. So not sure how it would work for you. WELL cared for. '97. 60K miles.

Nope. Freightliner is owned by Daimler-Chrysler, as is Sterling.

Ford sold off their Class-8 truck business. Can't remember who to. Maybe Sterling or Freightliner. But they still make up through Class-7 (F-750, GVWR 26,001 to 36,000lb). Those all require CDL (Class B in CA).

In that size of truck pretty much everyone is using CAT, Cummins or Mercedes (Freightliner). Oh yeah, and International-Harvestor (International). Auto trannies from Allison, Eaton and Fuller. Some of the autos are actually standards that have servo actuated clutches and shifters.

Are you SURE you read that? That makes zero sense. I guess that's CARB's way of killing of diesels. Fed law mandates ULSD...for EVERY vehicle. You won't be able to buy Non-ULSD. But you can't put it into engines that were designed to use it? Take the camera down and take a pic of that. I want to see it.

Here's some info on ULSD from the EPA. Someone needs to remove head from @ss. ULSD started into production, sale, whatever you want to call it on 6/1.

Maybe it was saying that it's illegal to use non-ULSD in 2007 diesels.

Let's just say that we had the whole thing to ourselves:0 NOBODY else went riding. I guess we're the only dummies but if ya got an itch, scratch it It wasn't really too bad while riding and just hanging around. We put wet towels on our heads and it felt great. Just was a little worried about the quads. There was a lot of heat coming off the engines. I'm sure that will be the last trip out there for a while

Mornin B&RW!BR>
I got it for $3700.00, It was very dirty but mechanically sound. I spent most of the weekend cleaning it to my wifes satisfaction. It was amazing but I didnt notice how truly dirty it was until i got it home. Mechanically, its pretty good but needs shocks and a steering stabilizer for sure.

Posted by: mywifesquad

And the A/C doesnt work either, so Im going to have it checked out this week. Im headed to Pismo this weekend and I told the wife we could drive at nite to avoid the heat, but I also told her id try and get it fixed too.

Cool (on the newer truck).

Sucks on the A/C. Our F-450 lost the A/C Memorial Weekend. $900 later there's a new compressor in it.

The dealer loves us. $2000 for the ebrake, $900 for the compressor, and other trucks have been in for various things. One is in now for squeky suspension, and brakes that vibrate like hell (10:1 that's trashed rotors). So that's probably going to be $500-1000. Oh yeah, and a new front lic. plate bracket. Some idiot pulled up to close to an electric gate and it tore it off. Looks like they hit something to me. What's left of the bracket and the front air dam are pushed in. But who knows.

Posted by: Trasher

Brake rotors don't warp on their own. something got them too hot. probably stuck caliper pistons since it's a ford. Overloading and hard braking won't help out either.

The estimated 500 to repair will be a good down paymentimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

Im hoping it just needs charging, but am doubtful it will be that simple.

Bummer! Mine is missing the front license plate mount.

Being company trucks, these trucks will get thrashed. This truck in particular was previously driven by the worst person for doing this. He was known to act like it was a 4x4 on job sites. And it's about time to start buying new trucks too. We've got a '98 with 170K, down to some '01 or '02 with about 70K. And these new trucks are so much nicer.

No clue if he does. He's got a lowered Chevy. Or used to. He left the company and to my knowledge is about the ONLY person that the boss would not rehire. He's talked some mad sh!t about the boss to his new employer who we do a lot of work with. He took several months under the guise of finishing a job out while he got all the pot out of his system before he left.

Mustang

I looked at another that had a mint interior and a realy nice exterior but the motor was 2 years newer and was bought used..
Carfax checks out on the above car in link, but its priced a bit above bluebook.. Still looks REALLY nice...

i had brake vibration from the front. turned out to be hotspots on my rotors. i put after-market performance rotors on (they're not cross drilled, but they have a cross-cuts on each one, which are directional). they work great.

hey creator, on the wet towels on your head.. we have a LOT of folks up here that wear dry towels on their heads. (I'm gonna get it for that one!). my daughter just graduated grade 12 and she was outnumbered by these folks 4-1. my lesson learned is to accept it and learn to co-exist (which is pretty much what I already did before, this just really opened my eyes).

on our May long weekend, I went for a short, EASY putt-putt ride with my 9 y/o. so short and easy, I didn't wear a helmet. my brother in law who doesn't ride at all, was also along for part of the ride, with his 2 y/o son. naturally, i innocently managed to flip my quad on myself. Still not exactly sure how i did it. I kinda had my rear tire slide off a steep rut & BANG, the thing came over on top of me. In a flash I realized I had one chance as it came over and I kicked it off me in one motion.my ankle is still skinned and swollen. I feel like a fool for no helmet at the time. If I'd thot there was the slightest risk I was gonna be riding anything remotely risky, I wouldn't have hesitated to put on a helmet. it happens that easy.

HOSS, HOSS!! I'm going to Utah on Friday (well, as far as Ogden, on my way through to Evergreen, Colorado). Bought a JD tractor and several accessories.

I got a '92 F350 Crew cab 4X4 with a 460(pig motor It has 219K on it, but the engine, tranny and brakes had been rebuilt recently. It needs shocks and a few other items. A/C for one and is in need of paint(just like my other truck But for $3700.00 it seemed like a decent risk. It was very dirty but a day with the carpet shampooer cleaned it right up. We rode in Borrego Springs last week and I couldn't believe how the turds keep closing in the area. Pretty soon it will be all gone. New closed trail signs were posted on trails that were just open months agoimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">BR>

nice looking. seems odd the motor & tranny have been rebuilt at that mileage, as both are usually bullet-proof for Ford, especially the 460. with all that recent work, seems like a great deal.

The tranny doesn't suprise me, since we're on #3 and it's a '94 w/120K. Throw a lot of weight at it and they give up. We asked our Service Mgr when #2 went. He said that was normal wear for them. 60K or so. Our truck works though. 90% of the time it leaves the yard she's loaded, either 1 or both ways.

True. I don't have much experience with them. Only knew one guy growing up whose dad had one. I tink the only problem was a leaky rear main seal. Which, if this had that, and she bled out... Bye bye motor.

The only thing I've heard that's been a problem with the 460 is the exhaust manifold bolts shearing off from the motor twisting from the torque. We had this happen. Coworker who had a '97 said that where he worked before they had a lot of 460s do that. And on his, his tranny went at 18K.

Actually "green sticker" (OHV registration which of course covers green, red and blue (out of state)) fees are a small portion of the OHV Fund. Most of the money going into the OHV Fund is from gas tax and SVRA entrance fees. How much do you pay to parks over the course of 2 years? Probably more than $25 a quad. I know I usually stay at least 2 nights when I go to an SVRA.

We rode in Borrego Springs last week and I couldn't believe how the turds keep closing in the area. Pretty soon it will be all gone. New closed trail signs were posted on trails that were just open months agoimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">BR>
Anyone ever ride at Pismo "back in the day"?? I was fully open and a fun place to ride. Now it's the size of a postage stamp with even more people riding thereYou really struck a cord here for meBR>
Anyone who likes to ride better wait up brother or the only thing place they will have to ride in will be their front yard
(if they haven't stopped that too)

Didn't mean to strike a cord with you CreatorI understand what your saying. If you really want to check out a messed up stateCheck out this thread What is really going on in Michigan? I have to say, they are pretty screwed up!!

I hear they are trying to stop you from riding on your own property down southIs it San Bernadino or Riverside County????

And on his, his tranny went at 18K. hr>

I have been riding in ca since 1973 and for the last 5 years or so it seems like all my money is used to buy and put up fences. More and more fences!! img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

The guy said at about 188K(30K ago) he got on the gas and the oil pressure dropped on the gauge. He said he pulled over and it was ticking lightly. The gauge went back up but it freaked him out and he had the engine replaced. The tranny I didnt get a story on, but it does have a shift kit in it now and bangs the shifts pretty hard.

just that you know Edmonton vs Carolina is the finals is very impressive. It's a bit more entertaining than years gone past, as they're calling most penalties now. i haven't had much time to watch. I was gonna sit down the other night, and my son wanted to play road hockey. he said, "C'mon, playing is way better than watching"... And I thot, I used to think the EXACT same thing when i was his age, so we just played road hockey instead.
