Daughter and I worked on her quad some more today. Found a rip in the boot, that sits behind the carbTore the carb apart, and cleaned it real goodit did have some crap in itcan only guess it came through the ripecided to get away from the stock intake and go with a clamp on filter. Now to only find one for the mojave.

Posted by: rescuediver

Just by them going out, doing what they did for a livingThey are heroesNo matter what the out come is.
You can only move forward, after the truth is out, on what occurred, and hopefully, learn from itSo, no one else will have to pay the ultimate sacrificethe same way.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

sorry, i disagree with the overuse of the word "hero". they were noble, unselfish, brave, good men willing to put their life on the line for their sense of community and moral values. i just don't get hero out of it, nor did i feel that way about 9/11.

are you talkin bout the raptor having a rip in the boot? like above the throtttle body?

Posted by: rescuediver

No, the mojave has the ripRaptor has been good so far

Went out with LJ this weekend. We could have used a winch...a few times. LOL

First time was going to Pilot Peak. We finally figured out which trail (I don't think it would count as a road....) went up it. We're going up and it's getting steeper and steeper. To the point even LJ with the 'Lander in 4Lo was just spinning. We ended up hiking up the trail to the summit. Let me tell ya...this fat boy is outta shape. But it was reassuring that the youngin was having to work hard too. lol. There's not much at the summit. About a 10' circular clearing. That's it. And a stump, I'll post a pic.

So we finished with that. Then road through what was snow last time we were there. Just a few patches left.

Checked the bridge and it's all clear. No snow or ice. Should be good for the ride next month.

Went down our usual tough route. Of course, as usual....STUCK, again. Got a good shot of my bike in the rut. And I mean IN the rut. We made it through that and went for another trail. There's this flipping tree on that trail. I've NEVER made it over it...until yesterday. WOOHOO...of course I promptly got stuck in the slop on the other side. (*&)^ Yeah.

Ok, so on our way we go. We check out one trail and just barely into it it goes vertical and we bail. Then....hmm...this trail doesn't look bad. We passed on it last year. Someone on a WR400 went up before and said it was fine, we didn't believe him. But this time LJ just jumps on and goes. LOL. What can a buddy do but to follow. LOL. And then it began. Got to one section that I just kept getting stuck in. So out came the tow strap. LOL Yeah.

SO we get through that and come up on this section that's washed out just below an erosoin control setup...which is like 10' long...and then it's the road. Do we turn around? Nope. We get the 'Lander up this 2' vertical section. LJ riding and me on the tow strap keeping the front end down.

Next time, we bring the Come-Along...no matter what!

And trail maintenance doesn't exist. The trails are getting SERIOUSLY bad. They need to get some money, NOW.

We did see more people up there than I've EVER seen up there.

Gosh, with everything going on with the mojave and what I've bought for my quadI sure hope the wife doesn't ask how much I've spentimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0"> She did ask the daughter and I (individually of course) what exactly is wrong with her (daughter's)quad? and what are we doing to itI taught the daughter wellShe told mom just a few little things, that need some attention and hopefully, when it's doneit will run like a champThen my youngest pipes in " you need to put an electric start on it" DOES IT EVER END

geez, i thot you checked rockymountain already. they're the best in pricing and selection, i find. OR, i'll check ebay first. and MD, IT NEVER ENDS!! especially when ya start adding bling.

You know, I thought I checked alsout, guess I over looked itI must have a catalog in every room I visitand in the truckDon't know how I missed itYou are right about pricingBut, the last couple of items I've bought, or needed to buy, they didn't haveAnyways, I'll sneak it inOh yea, I did check ebay last week. Didn't see anything on it, at least that could be purchased separately.

I know, it will never endso far though(crossing fingers) the wife hasn't told me to sell the Honda 70or, to stop working on the quadsShe even wants to go riding a couple days over Easter BreakBut, unfortunately, it will be local riding. Nothing up northlike Oregon

Posted by: confusedbuyer

i find with RMATV you have to call and ask sometimes, cuz it isn't always in their catalog. too bad about Oregon, but we're hoping to catch up to Fishslab. he wants me to bring some Canadian beer. ya know, some guys just ooze class naturally. i believe it's kevorkah. I think I'll do that , plus i'll surprise him with some world famous Canadian Rye whiskey. got your envelope stuffed today (man, it's bulging and bursting at the seams). I'll mail it next monday when we're in Florence.

hey, you got the rap 80, why do you still have the Honda 70? No small kids left to ride it is there? well, i'm trying to downsize all our stuff, and 9 y/o is doing great with clutch and his XR80. i've asked 8 y/o if he wants to try the XR70 100's of times. he always says NO! He only wants to ride quads. even on bicycle, he's not real daring or confident. so i put it in the Buy and Sell for a firm, high price ($1400 Cdn=1100 US). It was a 2000 model. I'd seen others for less than i was asking, so i thought if i get it, great, if not, i'll keep it for a couple of years in case he changes his mind. first guy bought it. must have got 10 more calls. say what you want, but Honda's reputation can't be touched for re-sale. and i tell it like it is when i sell. I'd put on a new chain, plug, oil change, air filter, lubed cables, valve adjustment, new sprocket bolts and new front sprocket cover. he'll have no surprises.

Posted by: rescuediver

I'll give them a call later today and see if they have what I need. That's great you have it readyThanksYea, I'm bummed about not goingI still won't write it offuntil the last minuteI've driven to eastern Oregon for less

When my kids mention riding, they always want to bring a friendSo, with 6 quads, they can move to the appropriate quad, to make room for another riderWith having the Honda, it still gives us that luxurynd, I think my youngest, still enjoys riding it. I'll actually look at getting rid of it as the weather gets a little nicer. Also, start taking it to the different riding areas and throwing a sign on it. What helps with the resale value for Honda is their reliabiltyhey're almost bullet proof

I REALLY WANNA GOTO FLORANCE and get lil confusedette drunk j/p But i really go wanna go man. i have an anual brithday campin trip this weekend and i aint even gonna have my quad i hate gettin older

Posted by: confusedbuyer

naw, drunk don't work on confusedette either... then she just passes out. but could ya bring a stash of diamonds, or a new home?

Posted by: Just4Kicks

OK guys, time to step up to the plate and speak out. I'm linking a thread that I just started in an attempt to get some opposing feedback to a bogus article labeling us OHV users as "outlaws".

Here is the link Outlaws

This should hit home for a lot of you in this thread because many are from California. One idiot wrote in supporting the abolishment of OHVs in my area and the guy doesn't even live here, he lives in San Diego more than 100-miles away!BR>
One statement in the article falsley states that OHV's are not allowed to go cross-country in the high-desert. This is why we pay green sticker fees here in California and "yes" we are allowed to go cross-country as long as we stay on public lands / trails, stay out of Joshua Tree National Monument (this is has not been a problem just an obvious observation), and obey local laws and restrictions. These people move up here from the city and decide they want the whole damn place to themselves and want to change what has always been. Please give some feedback...I'm counting on you.

It may be for Canadian, but you're a US citizen. It's illegal to travel abroad and get busy with someone under 18. Used to be you couldn't travel with the INTENT. Now, it's whether you did the deed or not. Even if it was in a drunken stouper in Amsterdam...you still get to meet Big Bubba.

And before anyone makes ANY comments (I know you all way too well), I saw it on 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, Dateline, one of those. I don't know it from a "personal" account as in I was charged under any applicable statute.

HHHMMMM, Very interesting Skinner (as I place one hand, on my chinnd the other, on my gun j/kI can't comment on that Well, actually, I couldI don't see where the gov't can do anything to you. Where is their jurisdiction to charge youon a crime, when it may be legal, where you were at? Not that I'm am saying doing that is alrightBecause, it's NOT.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Nope, it's actually a law that was passed within the last few years....

It's amazing what you can find online. It's 18 USC 2423(c). Used to be they had to prove you travelled with the intent. Now it's just that you did travel and did what you did. Part of the PROTECT Act of 2003, I think was the year on that. Gets you like 5-30 years.

It generally has more to do with the child sex problems in SE Asia and South American, but it doesn't mean Uncle Sam might use it against you. Info at

CEOS (Section of the Dept. of Justice.)

You know, fathers and firearms make me REALLY nervous.

MD, Google is a magnificant thing. Toss a few words in and who knows. Also helps to explain to your buddies who've moved 1/2 a country and some stalker chick is able to figure out their address. BR>
Hint: never have your address listed in the phone book.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

actually, the 17 y/o is super polite, hard working kid. she cleans all the dishes every night, not a peep of a complaint. her 2 spoiled brothers fight over her non-stop, and she appeases them. she found a job on her own at Taco Bell, takes bus to/from work. plus keeps up school work. NEVER complains or whines about anything. i really couldn't have it any easier for a teenager. my sons? well, i'm looking for property close to the prison cuz i can see where this is going (j/k). but they have a serious rivalry at 18 months apart, and it's only getting worse.

criminals....? canada?? yep, we'll take them just like the rest of the immigrants and other POS we let in. I'm so glad we've allowed boatloads of vietnamese in here years ago, because now they rival the bikers for total control of the drug trade/grow-ops. yep, cultural diversity, what a wonderful concept. it's so wonderful to add new layers of criminals to your country and then be branded a racist for not agreeing with it. and don't get me wrong, i've got good friends that have immigrated from Poland, Czech, India... but we sure have let in a lot of people that see us a virgion territory for criminal empires.

okay MD, on the house, i've gotta put in tile (wanna come help, i'll take ya for lotsa good rides), gut one bathroom and put soffit over my eaves. that'll pretty much do it. oh yeah, and a day of replacing plugs, switches and a few light fixtures. then we are DONE!

How is the us government gonna know if your off frollicing with some scandanavian teenager? unless the scandanavian goverment turned u over. The phone book is the easiest out of all the ways, to have your address listed. I must request my stuff removed from different lists, couple times a year did it the other day from some on-line listing

Festus, I agree with youIt's a good law. It's is just on the books to appease[sp] the general public. It's the government's way of saying, "We care, we passed a law, prohibiting it" I do not believe it's enforceable.

LMAO this is funny. So there is over 200 people w/ same last name as hoss (adults prusumably with phones) within in a 1 hour radius of salt lake city. then there is a group of about 30 of them in the south area of utah approx 4 hours south of where hoss was living (in the greater salt lake area) to where i am thinkin he moved. I thought he said he moved south and i remember something about a long drive. 4 hours seems about like what he was talkin about. thus i belive my stalkin is complete. Cedar city is my verdict

I do like the idea of calling up as the FBI. I almost called the company condo from my cell phone and said I was with the Madera Sherriff's Dept. when my buddy's gf was "singing". And the blow up sheep is pretty good.

Yeah one hour, maybe 2, is the limit for me for a day ride. It's also supposed to rain. Have to see how that pans out as the days go by. I've got a couple weeks to get my gear ready for Miami. Need a cold weather bag. I think it's gonna get a bit nippy out there. I'm just hoping for dry weather.

I want to get out to Clear Creek before it goes toxic. LOL I think that's over an hour for me. Have to find out from MWQ how far passed the 5 it is. I've heard it's about 30 minutes. And I'm pretty much an hour from the 5.

Some people out here seem to enjoy riding the calif blue groove dirt. The dirt gets so hard here in the summer that tires literally change the color of the ground as they slide over it. really noticeable on a track, but still noticeable on heavily traveled trails. I am not a real fan of riding in a total down pour, just got real good at it when i was racing regularly. And I love to race in the rain. "Everything's better when wet" IMO.

LJ, Ramsey is a condom, so if price is the same, stick with Warn.

MWQ, we have pretty well every kind of terrain you'd like. for dirtbike, Kamloops is pretty awesome. tons-o-hills with every level of rider challenged. some huge hill climbs. it's got a real desert-like terrain. very dusty riding.

If there is no MX race we will most likely be near the track, We are bringing a new rider (never ridden before) so i kind of want to get where it is a little more wide open. Are you talking about the track just east of the dtore or the one at the east end of the park. Im assuming it is the one by the store, not the under 90cc track.

We have desert here. I dont even ride much in the mos of june, july or aug. Have found i crash most in dry dusty conditions. I love what we dont have but maybe 3- 4 mos a year here. Wet, muddy, nasty stuff. im basically a slowed down a little A level enduro rider. Learned to ride total snotty trails when i was young, so now if I stay under 230 lbs my brain still remembers how to do it, any heavier andl it is not pretty.

Cmon lets be honest here. ONE of THEM got out of control. LMAO i was doing my best to keep it some what safe. There does seem to be times when it all cuts loose over there. I often wonder why it is not shut down permanently, but I dont think it has ever gotten as bad as the DrDune/BaldMike exchanges. Those 2 were nuts, very funny. But definitely ADULT humor.

The spin zone is a bunch of guys who have a little time to kill during the day at work. Not too sure what every one does exactly. As for me I work in a machine shop 4:00am to 2:00 pm mon-thur. I'm at home right now. At work is a few CNC machines, once they are running. There is a bit of some time to kill while they are running. Usually have between 5-45 minute cycles. Pretty cool for me anyway. the zone lets my day go faster. But like i said in another post it does head into the gutter occasionally. Some kind of chemical reaction when the GG shows up, sort of like jr hi. LOL

Mornin powerstroke01, i was just wondering, do you mount the winch on the front or do you make it so you can put it on either end? I would think you would need it on either end at different times. but I dont ride a quad so what do I know. Thanks MWQ

Posted by: powerstroke01

ON the front. Im outta luck if i need it for the rear...

Posted by: Trasher

That's the funny thing about most all vehicles with winches. They just throw one on the front but never in the rear. Most of the time when your stuck in a hole you want to go backwards, not further into the slopBR>
years ago, i had me a Subaru Brat and I had the jeep racing bumpers with winches on both ends. I used the one in the rear more than the front one by far.

Yeah. But 80% of the time out here we want to go forward.. I wont get my self into anything i cant back out of.. lol Well except teh snow..

Posted by: Trasher

I know that Brat wasn't a hard core wheeler But I truly wheeled the snot out of thing. I would go places many vehicles couldn't even get through. Wish I still had it to trash around wit

Posted by: Trasher

The winches saves me many times. One time I was Oregon later in the evening by myself (never again) and went down a bank near some train tracks to play around but never made it back up. Every time I tried i would just bury all four wheels. Broke out the winch and I was home fer supper. The funny thing was a train came by slowly and stopped and backed up to see if I needed help. They sat there and watched me winch up and out.

I think that falls under the accessories he's buying. Most of the winch companies sell a bag of stuff to go with the winches. Snatch block, gloves, tree strap, maybe an extra clevis or something.

I'm a draftsman for an elec. contractor. I have a lot of downtime waiting for projects to come through. We aren't terribly busy. We might run 2-3 jobs concurrently. Sometimes might get up to 5 if we are transitioning from one job to the next. We're having the Tracy job is winding down, starting up another in Soledad, winding down one in MD's neck of the woods, starting up another near Livingston and probably some poor guys are gonna have to go back down to Oxnard as a customer's cooler burnt down (NOT the one we worked on thankfully). Then we have a ag well station that needs to get finished up over near Mendota.

MWQ, we got what you want here. lotsa mud, slop, trees. Vedder Ridge is about an hour from Bellingham and has some good, challenging stuff. lotsa skinny trails marked "expert" for dirtbikers only.

LJ, your first post on this page was scary. glad i read the previous page to clarify why your "outta luck if i need it for the rear"! my first reaction was to tell ya to move to San Fran then! you know, the place where the dinner special is ALWAYS rump roast bone-in. oops, now i see Festus and Hoss will be making some travel plans.

too bad we're not closer guys. I've got all these webbed straps that are like seatbelts, with closed, sewn loops on both ends. my father-in-law got them for free from containers they'd unload (one use straps that just get tossed). they're free and work perfect for the tree. and when i see how much they gouge for one, it makes me mad.

I can only imagine. Bellingham was the sweetest /toughest single track I had ever been on. A hour north would probubly be even better There are places like it in ca, just not long sections of it. Plus how beautiful it is while riding up there where it actually rains. have the environmental wackos made it to canada yet? nothin but trouble. IMO

i think this was the birthplace of Greenpeace and definitely home to the founder, Paul Watson. so yeah, we got our share of save-the-guay -whales -for-jesus freaks too. the frustrtaing thing is we MAKE the trails, and we don't mind sharing. they just have an overbearing belief that it all belongs to hikers...PERIOD. most of the horse riders i've run into are good people, tho.

Greenpeace huh, bummer. These are some of the most self centered people in the world IMO. thetre are so many places to hike that you cant ride it is rediculous. At least here in the us. No that is not good enough for them they want all trails for them. If they ever make me king, I'm gonna change a few things. LMAO I have only run into horses maybe 3 times in my whole life and maybe 15-20k miles off road. I just pull over kill the bike and wait for them to pass. they all were very friendly to me and my group.

I think that falls under the accessories he's buying. Most of the winch companies sell a bag of stuff to go with the winches. Snatch block, gloves, tree strap, maybe an extra clevis or something.

Was that an extra "Bevis" or clevisAfter all, remember Creator's avatar

spent 14 hours today, trying to get ready. nice curveballs.... had to replace bearings on one tralier axle/brake drum, had to replace breakaway (glad i checked all this stuff!!). replaced the fuel filter on the PSD. anyone else done this before? I was a little confused on how tight to put cannister lid back on. ended up using filter wrench to tighten it about an extra 1/4 turn or so, as i wasn't sure if hand tight was good enough. is there such thing as too tight?OMG!! I just did some serious PSD chatting!!

still don't have quads loaded, but that's all that's left (plus trailer). then drain hot tub and clean the filter (just coincidence that it times out that way). well, have a good week gabbing ladies! sayanora!

Well, I put the mojave together tonightHad to use a hair pin to hold the choke cable in placeThought that was pretty ingeniousStarted the mojave and had white smoke coming from the valve coverhen I had it running 2 nights ago, it didn't do thatcan't think of what it could beThinking maybe, just maybe, there was some simple green left on itrom when we clean the engine before we took the top off. Tomorrow morning, going to get up early and change the oil. Start it up again and see if, it still smokes. I'm wondering if, maybe the valves are a little to tight? I set them at .22. Specs say .20-.24. If it still smokes, I'll pull the top (before I put everything back on) and double check them. But, I already checked them quadrupal times x'4Could it be possible, that they (valves) are too tight and exhaust is working it's way through the new gasket?? Like I said, I checked them numerous times before putting it all back together.

Any ideas???????

This will hold me up from riding tomorrow

MWQ, if you see this before you leave, Depending on what occurs with the above problemI might not be thereIf not, wife says we will go Sunday to ride

I'm crossing my fingers, it's not anything big

Have funand watch out for the "other" crazy drivers on the roadI'll probably talk to you sometime next week

I've haven't done the fuel filter on my truck. Always had it done at the dealership. So, can't answer your question.. Wise man for checking all that stuff thoughbefore taking our family on a long road trip. I mean your family on the road

Who makes those decisions? I would have probubly tossed it a few times. And I have only been in there since dec, I think. Of course I would have tossed DD & BM too. Or at least put them in a adult only section. Is lind of scary to think there are young kids reading even a little of that cr@p. most of it is just bs. but if taken out of context, OMG. pray for the children.

Doubt very much it has anything to do with the valves. was the smoke coming from around the gasget? or just off the top of the cover? How much smoke?

Still planning on leaving here around 8:00 or so. wife is not going because of rain. not sure about new wife but both sons claimed they were going rain or shine. i will go alone if it comes down to it. It is raining so I must go. LOL

Okay, okay...I haven't looked at the past 30 pages that I have missed, and I'm sorry for going AWOL (starting a new job and selling/buying a home has taken it's toll).

I've sold my Heber home and have bought one in Huntington (population 2000). We are moving this week...well, ex-cons are moving us this week. We aren't even supposed to box anything. I guess that's good and bad to have someone else boxing up my blow-up animals.BR>
I've moved the ATV's and 5th wheel already. Oh yeah, I also bought a four place ATV trailer. It's pretty nice, but dang, it was kind of spendy.

Work has sent me to training for most of the month. Just when I thought I was finished with school, I hired on with the perpetual education company (PacifiCorp). This week I'll be at Arc Flash training (that's where they show you photo's of all the crispy critter electricians and linemen).BR>
XOXOXOXOXO

We got there about 8:45, sun was just starting to break thru. Looked like a perfect day. The boys and I got dressed, and fired up bikes. The curse of the pos seems to be following the oldest son. His yamaha was somehow missing the powervalve cover. He was bummed and got undressed and was loading the wr as the youngest and i headed out. We rode around the bottom and put a couple laps on the moto track when it started drizzling. We headed into the hills at this point and for every 5 mins the rain was coming down harder and harder. We kept heading farther into the hills and it kept raining a little harder. We decided to head back to the truck and just as we got to it the skies opened up big time. As we were trying to get under the rain cover over the picnic bench the wind came up and blew the rain sideways, within 3 minutes we were soaked to the skin. Oldest was in the truck laughing. youngest was getting over bronchitis and now shivering. Got him changed into dry clothes and called it a day. the red light was on within minutes of it raining anyway so it was no great loss.
Now gotta find that cover this week or maybe make one. not sure.

Glad your son was able to get his parts

We had better luck at Carnegie then you didWhen we first got there, it was drizzling, but very little. After we found a spot to park. It was sunnyWeather was off and on as far as light rain. couldn't believe the traction we had. Loved itWe played mainly in the creek. But, did do a couple spins on the Los Osos trailBoy were we covered in mudHad a great timeAs we were headed back to the truck to call it a dayIt opened up for about 10 mins. Didi we get drenchedBut, all in all, we had a great time

Saturday might be a possiblityRight now, the day is openAnd I need to mess with the mojave carb some moreAlso, the plans right now are to head to Miami trails for that Saturday. Wife has a full schedule that weekand for us to camp with the quads, we need to bring both vehicles. Can't wait to get a toy hauler

MD I too was having issues last night getting on. I gave up and played around with the computers here. Getting closer to getting the new server and router ready to go live. Found a cool photo album system. Need to tighten the security on that and she should then be good to go....I think.

Miami is still on....if it's still there. LOL. Man it opened up around here last night and this morning. Took my bro to work at 5am and around 4:45 we thought we had lightning...nope...looks like power lines were down. Got to the office and it was dark. CHP had one road closed....though he had to chase a guy down who drove past the flares...I thought it was open too (I was going a diff. way) but they didn't do a good job of blocking the road. He was parked off to the side. Going in early to restart everything...after I get me some breakfast.

What is the situation if it is still raining? Does the area get closed? Do you need 4X4 to get to the campsite? Will everyone still be going if it is raining? If I cancel this trip, the wife will melt down. She needs to camp as much as I need to ride. LOL

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

The only way it would get "closed" would be if a blizard came through and CalTrans piled the snow too high at the incoming roads to get in. There are no gates or anything like that on the roads going in. There are only a few locked gates on a couple road sections do to rutting. You can still go down them on Quads and MCs.

Ok guys, Here's a technical question for youI have finished the mojaveThe only thing that was changed was the air filter. Instead of the k&n filter that fit in the stock air box, I went with a clamp on style k&n filter with outerwear. Now, I don't remember what number jetting I had in(should of wrote it down when I had it out) but, it was what k&n recommended for that filter. The needle is in the #3 position. I thought, all I would need to do with the new filterwould be to adjust the idle screwoy, was I WRONGThe thing is idling fast/high. Couldn't get it to idle down with the idle screw.
Would lowering the needle to say the #2 or 1 position, make a difference?
I am going to continue looking for my k&n jet kit (can't find it when I need it and also do some research here

Hard to believe that a simple filter change would be that big of a deal. Was the stock air box that restrictive? You have created a lean condition if anything with the new filter. I would try turning in the air screw on the side of the carb a bit and see what happens. If it is a fuel screw turn it out. The needle would have to be raised to counter the lean condition, not lowered. Not sure if you were lowering the needle or the clip(lowereing the clip would raise the needle.) Any chanceyou now have a air leak? Would cause the same conditions.

They get some pretty serious winds over there. I was at Bass Lake in October and holy cow. Plastic resin charis on the deck ended up going across the deck and around the corner. Trees down on the roads. Power outages. You name it. We almost got blocked in but the branch wasn't that much on the road, plus it was dead and pretty light.

I knowIf you were to see the stock air box system, you would die laugingit is that restrictiveIMO. I don't think I have a air leak. Didn't hear or feel one. I'll try the fuel mixture screw. What I do know is, it has a Dyna jet main #134 jet in it and the needle clip is in the #3 position. I'll be back

Any possible kinks in the throttle cable? Having a real hard time with the fact that the idle screw makes no difference. But if the stock airbox was that restrictve it could now be super lean.

I was just out there, man did Mother Nature just open the flood gatesIt's a real good down pour with thunderJust like the old mid-west stormsAnyways, I did find an old thread and re-adjusted the air mixture screw, just like 96lapiscoupe had said, he did. It did lower the idle. Now, I just can't get the thing to idle without "bumping" the throttle to keep it running. Couldn't find that "sweet" spotBR>

I am going to continue looking for my k&n jet kit (can't find it when I need it and also do some research here

air leaks? choke on??

Ok, MWQ and mstrquad have both mentioned air leaksI have checked, but maybe I'm missing somethingWhat is the best way to check for a leak? Spraying WD-40 around the engine, anywhere a leak could be?

I'll also check the choke cable again.

Good thing through all thisis- IT STARTS ON THE SECOND KICKAnd that's saying a lotimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">mstrquad, I think can attest to that

Posted a couple pics. Waiting approval. One's for MWQ...nice little hill for you there. Or anyone who has some b*lls and traction. Saw MC tracks up there so I'm sure it's doable for MCs.

The other is my bike in a rut. I HATE THAT FRIGGIN RUT!

That is where I rode my first mini bike. any way when ever there was tornado warnings and with them thunder and ligntning storms. mom and dad would take all of us into the base ment and all i wanted to do was get on the couch and look out that window. I saw the most incredible lightning storms I could ever imagine out that window. Still quite vivid memories over 30 yrs later. Mom and dad thought I was crazy. I also got in a lot of trouble for leaving the basement during a tornado warning. Problem for me was I had figured out that was when the best lightning happened.

I liked the trail with the rut in it. great line for a dirt bike on the left. didnt look fun on a quad. I am really getting excited about riding there, i cant remember the last time I rode some where new. most of the places I go i probubly have 50% of the trails memorized I have been there so much.

Oh, yea, I think the mid-west has the best electrical storms Everytime we had one, we would always get pushed inside

I use carb cleaner. (in a well ventilated area) I use it sparingly and start around the carb and its manifold up to the cylinder. Also around any vacuum lines, not sure if it has any. A small leak will usually run normal/better if found and a large leak will usually kill engine when found.

I yea, I forget to mention, I had to put a filter on the crank case hose. Would this be the cause of the problem I am having?

As soon as the rain settles down, I'll go out with carb cleaner to see what I find.

I dont think so. unless that hose also connects to the intake some where. causing a bleed off that the air box didnt. I assume the hose was connected to the airbox?

Yes it was. That's why I also didn't think it would matter. Just thought I'd throw that out there because I forgot to mention it earlierand, wanted to make sure I covered all bases.

I was just out there, spraying some carb cleaner around. Didin't find anything that would lead me to believe I had a leakDid find a thread last night, that mentioned the throttle cable might be to tight. This could also be part of the problem, due to taking the carb off and disconnecting the throttle cable. Was tinkering around with it. Then burnt my hand on HOT exhaust pipeSo, now, I'm letting it cool down a little.

It's nice to get it to start on the second kickAlmost feel spoiledbut spoiled would be having a electric starter

Would I be rightto assume that, with the quad starting on the second kickthat I'm pretty close on the carb set up, other then it not idling?

Sounds stupid, but try pulling the filter and plugging the hose, and see if it makes any difference. Now that you mention the cable I wonder if the slide is sticking a little. Does turning handlebars lock to lock change the idle? if no I would think cable is cool. Stillcould pull off topof carb and check slide travel. Wouldnt take much to make it sticky.

I'll try that with the filter. Also was thinking maybe the cable was sticking. I didn't lube itGuess, I'll try forcing some lube down it to see if that helps. Didn't see any change by turning the bars.

Yes you are close. Does it make a difference if the choke is on or not?

Ok, it doesn't make a difference with the crank case hole plugged. It does make a difference if the choke is on. Idle goes way up.

Ok, just for the heckof itI pulled the plug. It is black/oily at the base of the plug, the tip is gray and the prong is tan. Porcelin [sp] is light tan

RD.
plug sounds ok to me. does the idle surge or just kind of float around? Or will in just not hold a idle at all and die? You just cleaned the carb right? How old is the plug? How long would it take to put back on the stock filter/box?

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Sounds like you need to completely rejet the bike, from top to bottom. Start with a fresh plug and go. As it is, you are looking at the plug the way it was. You'll probably need to go up a jet across the board: Main and Pilot. The "choke" on my Warrior is an enrichning circuit. I would assume your carb is like that. Puts more fuel into it. With no air box you are now flowing a LOT of air, and need to flow a LOT of fuel to compensate. You need a 14:1 ratio of 02 to Gas.

Here's a good one guys. Listened to the radio report. Snow level to 3,000ft today. Fish Camp (higher than Miami) got like 20". Not sure what Miami got. Definately have to take a drive this weekend. LJ....get the Jeep, chains and chainsaw.... we might need it. Forecast is for 70s next week so hopefully any snow will be melted off. Partly cloudy this weekend.

The idle surges. It will hold an idle, but, way high. I can't get it to hold an idle at low rpm's. Yes, carb was just cleaned, plug is brand new, put it on with all the other goodiesTo go back to stock would be about an hour. Have to strip her down and remove rear shock to put it all back. Luckily, I still have itAlmost threw it away

Skinner, I researched what other guys have done with the same set up on a mojave. Seems like, I'm in the ball parkJust can't get it to idle at low rpm's. Seems others have settles for what I call "bumping" the throttle, to keep it idling. I can do that. But, don't want to, my daughter rides this quad. When we were at Carnegie last weekend, she had a heck of a time riding the hillsPlus, I wouldn't know where to start. I broke out the jet kit and everything is set up according to their recommendationsI just can't get it to idle right. AAARRRGGGGGGGGG

Sounds good for next weekendI'm 99% sure I'm going

yeah. It was snowing on my drive to work on 49 this morning. and thats at about 3Kft elevation..
Ill have teh winch on the quad if any snow is left over. The mounting plate arived today.

ANd the boat was taken away too. YEAAAAHHH!!!!!!!

Oh, and i almost went for a swim today. Took the quad back to the creek which is a river now behind our house and when i first dove in the water was over the lights.
The level wasnt that high but the front pushed the water up and over.
Then, as im in the middle of crossing it the quad starts moving sidways!! i was like WTF? So i went WOT and got outta there. haha

This is a strange one for sure. I read your other post about some people living with having to blip the throttle to make it idle. That is ridiculous to me. The only thing that would make a thumper hard to idle would be a radical cam. Pretty sure you dont have one of those in there. My only thought without looking at it personally would be the valves. Are you sure you were on the correct TDC when you adjusted the valves? How many turns out is the fuel screw at now?
