<points to the southern sky> What the heck is that bright thing? I vaguely have a recollection of something called the Sun. Maybe that's it.
If it keeps raining I'm buying a raft. This has been INSANE this week. Looked at a Weather Station in Clovis today and it picked up .7" of rain this morning. .03" in 5 minutes. Left the house this morning and the yards looked like prime swamp land. Least I won't need to turn the sprinklers ($$) on for a bit.
My coworker went BACK to DMV yesterday. They wanted to see the quad the first time he went and wanted to see the emissions sticker. Evidentally it was scratched. Who knows. You could plainly read the CA OHV Emissions cert. sticker on the pull start housing. You'd think if it was CA certified, that it would be federal certified. And I didn't even know there was a certification for emissions at the federal level for OHVs. I know they do sound levels. Somehow I think they are trying to do this for road going which you can't do in CA...well you shouldn't be able to do.
So now he has to go to the CHP and get the emissions sticker certified. Sheesh. What a PITA. Has to wait until 1/13 to do that. Then he has to go back to DMV with the cert. form.

it was 4 tires (2 & 2), no rims. ya, I'll get the wife a set of rims for the Recon. Everything is running good. we're riding tomorrow. but boy, is it COLD here, around freezing, but the coast always makes it feel 10-20 degrees colder. we'll have the full-on rob-the-liquor-store gear tomorrow, balaclavas, hoods, big jackets. just need some weapons to complete the ensemble.
well, Happy New Year guys, have a good one and many happy PSD'ing hours to ya.

BTW, any of you guys familiar with the pre-PSD?? It was a 7.3 Turbo Diesel. different block than our PSDs. well, they've had problems with the blocks. the cylinder walls pit, causes cavatation, engine goes=total rebuild, re-sleeve cylinders. one friend just rebuilt his at 170K miles, another guy I know did his around 200K (miles). Sooooooo...., a relative just phoned me excited on this great deal he got on a '94 Turbo Diesel, with about 125K on it. he was oblivious to the cavatation problems. I just didn't have the heart to sh!t on his parade and tell him it's not an "if", but a "when".
Dear PSD guys, what would you do? Smile and say, "Oh yeah, great!" (like i did), or tell him to unload it? No wonder the dealer gave it to him so cheap and said get it off the lot. he paid $7500 (US), and they told him they sticker 'em on the lot at $12,000-14K.

HAPPY NEW YEAR fellow FBK brothersHope you all have a fabulous 2005May your PSD take you and your family to many atv riding placesnd return you home, in one piece

Skinner, I hear you about the rain. I know when we were at Pismo, in a 24 hour period (Monday) they received 2.5 inches of rain. These cells are dumping the rain. Which we need. And the snow is great too
Posted by: rescuediver
Confused, I would tell him nice pick up on the PSD, just be prepared to put a couple thousand into it because of this or that.........If he really wanted to make it a nice rig (because everything else was in good shape) dump a new 7.3 into it for around $4,000-$5,000 and not worry about a new truck. I checked one out at the local Ford last week. Sticker price was $62,000alk about being shockedThat's only $16,000 less then what I paid for my house.

Confused, I would say you made a good sale on the tiresAnd to spend the money on tires for the wife's recon is sweetBR>
My wife told me to spend whatever I need to on the Z400 to get it runningI about diedLooks like, I'll probably stick with stock clutch, stiffer springs and a aftermarket basket, probably Hinson. Looks like the Z400 has a cooling problem with the stock basket. (unless someone can steer me in a different direction by their clutch wisdom

Confused I believe '94 was the first year for the Powerstroke. It's a 7.3L. It was just a really low power version? I believe they only came in stick (no autos in Ford's lineup could handle the torque.) Before that I believe it was naturally aspirated. Not sure if it was the old 6.9 or a non-turbo 7.3. They added the turbo and named it Powerstroke. Emblem was more of a sticker at that time applied under the F-X50 logo on the fender.
MD at least the weather seemed to be pretty good today. Took a trip up to Merced after the boss turned us loose at noon. Picked up a digital video camera. It did start to sprinkle about 2:30 this morning on the way back from my friend's place.
Posted by: confusedbuyer
the Turbo Diesel is also 7.3, but different block than PSD. it used a pump to indirectly inject fuel into the side of the cylinder, whereas the Powerstroke is a direct injection and injects from the top of the cylinder through individual injectors. you don't wanna know what a set of those injectors are worth. getting prison-raped would be gentler. In '94, there were apparently some TDs, & PSDs, but it'll say one or the other, and they are definitely different engines. he's definitely got the Turbo Diesel.

MD, send a PM to mstrquad. He's the only person I've ever talked to about clutches so he might have a clue. Or maybe he'll pop in again here sometime and see the post. I know he puts in a performance style clutch that has little slip. Either its open or the clutch is locked in. Not much slipping and a really short "throw" on the lever is all that's needed.

My dad retires from Ford this Friday as PArts Manager, so I ordered a fuel filter before he goes. Couldn't think of anything else I'll need. already got a few oil filters stock piled. maybe I should get a new belt, mine is 5 1/2 y/o and never been replaced. strange, no squeal, yet our '97 GMC van with the 4.3 had a new belt and tensioner pully put in about 1 1/2 years ago (18,000 miles) and it squeals like Toyo on top of Ned Beatty.

Traffic really wasn't that bad. It was running 75-80MPH on the way up. I was suprised it was running that fast for the most part. Only places people slowed down were at the Chowchilla River Station and north of that where the cross traffic area is. Coming home was even less traffic (about 1/2 as much overall, but a few bad packets north of the Chowchilla River Station and maybe a little more north), though it was running slower (70-75). I had to laugh at one point...I saw a Dodge Caravan towing a 4x4 truck, full size at that, near the Save Mart Dist. Center. Running about 45-50MPH.
Though it seems like I got home faster than I went up there. Maybe I looked at the time wrong. I do have to say one thing for Merced...LONG LONG LONG green lights for their turn lanes. Though their Best Buy is TINY compared to Fresno. It's about the size of our CompUSA.

I've never had to deal with changing a clutch so I have no clue. Mine is still on the original one. Just wonder how long it will last with the tech. stuff up at Miami. Have to give it a work out sometimes. Though I try to stay off of it. I'm really thinking about dropping a tooth on the front sprocket for up there. Not a whole lot of high speed runs up there...unless you feel like taking on cars...head on.

MD that many? That's the population of Clovis. Seems the farther north you get the smaller the counties are.
I've never tossed screws but my bro said it happens. Usually at motels where another crew is there. Usually the rockers.
LOL confused. Yeah, probably true. We've had a few right out of prison. One guy lasted for a while. But had problems with his PO not letting him leave the county to work. We usually have guys take off once a DA sends the child support collection order. One pay check and they are gone.

speaking of roofing nails, LOSER neighbor is a roofer/druggie/POS. Skinner, I've learned that adding a performance clutch can lead to slippageSeems like it's wiser to go back to a stock clutch with stiffer springs and a aftermarket clutch basket to increase oil around the clutch. MD

I was thinkin the same thing. Most are way better than stock other than the pull needed might be more than stock. I need to replace the warrior clutch soon also. Goin to change out the fiber disks and springs, check and/or replace the steels and maybe the cable too. You would be surprized at how bad a cable can make it work

only time i think of Hoss while i have digital camera is those moon shots with the chocolate eye. img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0"> Hoss, your current avatar is by far the best. let's try to keep it that way Cybil. i just accidentally erased a great post, so this'll be diluted too. newLT, sorry to hear you're close To Hoss' backyard. It's not your fault, ya can't pick your neighbors. I sure hope you don't end up attracted to sheep like him. the F350 has a solid axle vs. independent suspension on 3/4T and smaller. plus it's designed to haul big weight, so that may be why the ride is stiffer.

mstrquad and Creator, that's what I've read from quite a few people, while on my quest for information. I guess, it could be associated with oils that they are usingSo, I've come to the conclusion that stock plates, with stiffer springs and a aftermarket basket to help increase oil flow.
I can only think that the previous owner was hard on the clutch, while he rode trails in Missouri. I've only had the quad out for a week at Pismo and this trip. Which the wife was riding it, when the clutch went out. I checked the cable and adjustments, all is good. I plan on buying a book on the quad (z400) on it, so I can start to tear it apart and figure out what's going on.

LTkid, first of all we are known as Ford Beta Kappa. A made up fraternity based on Whitewater's wild beer swilling and womanizing days at college (and they say Mormons don't have any fun). Word got around about him and none of the girls would go out with him (or rather their fathers probably locked em in the basements) so he had to resort to sheep for his umm...outlet. Evidentally one poor sucker didn't lock his daughter up and Hoss got a hold of her (and what a fine catch she is) and has since sired a few offspring. One who likes to dye his hair green and urinate on other kids and in the vents of the family home. He probably got that from his dad. (I might be slightly off on the story, but you're welcome to read the 170 pages of BS to find out how correct I am.)
At some point Creator (everyone knows him as Trasher) had a question about 7.3L PSDs. Well...that topic ended and this has become a place for all of us to BS about all kinds of stuff. We all have nicknames which with the exception of Creator and Toyo seem to all come from TV shows. I'm Skinner (from the Simpsons), rescue is Marshal Dillon (Gunsmoke, Bonanza, one of those), Whitewater is Hoss (again, another western TV.) I think there's even Festus (is that Tommy?). And of course Little Joe (powerstroke01) as he's the youngin of the crowd (19-20 something like that.)
It's a place to hang out, talk smack, have a nice adult conversation without resorting to name calling (well, not mean name calling, though I'm not fond of Skinner). You're welcome to join us, though you'll be given a name.
Well hate to cut it short...gotta stop by and pick up an ATV jack from a buddy to finally get the tires off the quad and have the new shoes put on.

the warrior i have. i put in the fiber disk and the race springs in it . i think there to hard and make shoure your cable is not the problem. if the cable need to be replace do it before doing the clutch it might be the problem. as for the outher bikes still have the stock clutch. i think were talking about the z400 if so i have a freind that has one that is pump up. i'll ask him what he did to his clutch.

sorry to report that Hoss has a beastiality affinity to wooly animals (sheep), along with a touch of necrophelia. actually, he was one of the first to boldy slam me on this public forum, so i keep taking shots at him, but he's just too thick skinned for me. he's really a great guy... for a frat boy. I'll let him answer your ID question. he tends to change IDs a lot. He's been known as stalker, Cybil, Hoss, PP (polyorchid pee-pee), frat boy but maybe it should be chameleon the way he slithers around and changes his colors so much.
I'm responsible for re-naming everyone. Mr. Tommy is/was Pa Cartwright. Festus was given to skinner for a short time, along with just4kicks. it's never really stuck on anybody. i guess the names sorta started with a western theme/ Bonanza and Gunsmoke. Skinner was Festus for a short time, but Hoss liked to delve into his social and sex-life at which time I suggested Principal Skinner and everyone jumped on board and it stuck. the worst/best nicknames are the ones you hate that stick.
so post a few more times and i'll peg ya with a new moniker, like Billy the LT kid (maybe we'll abbreviate it to BLT). oh, BTW, i was only trying to offer a reason for the stiffer ride... didn't realize you already knew that much about PSDs. you know more than i did at 17. good for you! HEY, maybe if he got the PSD used, someone added an extra leaf in the suspension?? just a guess, as that'd make a stiffer ride.

Yeah Festus i was. but the first name usally sticks and that was toyo cuz of all my Jap tire preachin I love my toyo tires. although when i hear toyo i envision jackie chan playin a cowboy lmao holy crap its been a bit on the chilly side. 20°F around here right now. last weekend it was freakin in the mid 20's at the ranch and wasn't pluggin in the PSD holy crap that thing bucks and coughs like a mule with heaves when ya fire her off on a single glow. guess a guy should be more patient in the mornin. double glow or plug it in when i get up to make coffee and/both.

Hey Confused, he did buy it used, so i guess it could have and extra leaf. I know he has a leveling kit. I'll have to tell him to check for an extra leaf.

thanks for the info OFC, i'll have to let him know.

I never payed any attention back there but is this truck a crew cab longbed? they also ride rougher than a john boat in 3' chop. espially out here we have a stretch of road south of seattle on I-5 that really gets them suckers bucking. Goin from Hwy 18 - the Fedway Scales and down the hill the long bed really bucks. the supercab long aint to bad and the crew short aint to bad. but those long box crews are just the wrong length for a smooth ride in some places.
Posted by: newLTkid
Its a crew cab, and I'm pretty sure its a short bed but I can't remember. I'll ask him next time I talk to him.

okay, then is Toyo back to Festus? BTW Toyo, after i finished boiling over you slagging Team Canada that did such a big favor for your US boys, i was ROTFLMFAO over your comments about the sea-chickens. It's real frustrating cuz they always had a good defence 'till Holmgren took over, but the D is just too weak to win more than 1. what a shame. I'd love to see them win. closest thing to a home team i have to cheer for.

Snow: we have been dumped on everyday for a while now. It was the big -2 F at my house this morning. Good thing I put new batteries in the truck. It starts like a champ (without being plugged in). It's just a regular OHV. Not sure if it's green or red (if you registered it here). For visiting use your WA reg or an out of state pass thingy Parks has. Unless you had a dealer fake the paperwork, it's not street legal. I know one guy (met him with LJ up at Little Shuteye) who had a dealer street reg him a 250cc MC. Like an XR250, I think. Had to pay cash and never say who he bought it from. LOL.
As a general rule, no, you can't just ride it around. You'd probably need an M2 at that.

Like Creator and Skinner said, Not legal except as a OHV. Pocket Rockets always have been illegal to operate on Public Property. As of 1/1/05 scooters can only be operated by someone with a learners permit or a Driver's license. There are 16 pages of laws governing it. Saw one yesterday, must of been putting out 100x's the pollution as my PSD. That thing was almost as bad, as a smoke grenade deployed in Iraq. But, they are more energy efficient, so the tree huggers look the other wayAnd push for us to have split riding seasons for our 2 strokesimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

As far as the closed loophole...that was CARB closing that one. They nixed that by saying the vehicles don't meet emissions requirements for on-road vehicles, which is true.
I wonder...if you dropped in a crotch rocket motor with all of the emissions equipment.... That's the only thing that's holding them back. It actually wasn't that difficult to do them. People thought it was a big hoop to jump through, and it wasn't. Same process for a quad as if it was a MC.

Holycrap. i dunno about a crotch rocket motor in a lil crf 50 frame. according to our laws the wheel base has to be a minimum of 3.5' and headlight 34" or sompin

I was talking about a rice burner in a quad frame. LOL. A crotch rocket motor would twist a CRF50 frame....let alone probably actually being bigger than the frame.

Please don't remind me. That's why I've stayed away.
Well looks like the weather is going to take a break after this series of storms. Hopefully get a chance to ride next Sunday. Saturday I have a meeting to go to. Snow level is 5500' though. Eek. That's not good. Supposed to drop starting tomorrow though. Whew.
Snow level above 5500' this time of year is bad. Melts the snow up there and it comes rushing down the hills (ie. January 1997). The people living in the river bottom got upset at the Bureau of Reclamation cause they didn't notify them that they opened the flood gates at the lake (Millerton). Well...the fact that the water flow BENT the gates I think calling people who chose to live IN a river was the last thing on their mind. Morons. Should have let em drown.

I know. Majority of them are traveling to fast for conditions, ie. hills and turnsBR>
Oh yea, I remember those stormsMan, we were on duty like 12 days straight, patrol the rivers and levees for boils. Made some good moneyGot recognized by the federal government and state government for our effortsWife has pictures of the water going over the flood gates at Don Pedro reservoirFriend's house was on 60 minutes when he built a wall around his home to save it. One river was going over 80,000 cfs. At first, I was up at Tule Lake (Ca/Oregon) border duck hunting. Work called me back. What I saw on the way back was amazing. But, the magnitude of what occurred didn't hit me until I saw how things were in my "own backyard"
And this storm has the making to do the same thing. A lot of low snow, then, a storm with just rain to wash it down hill into the valley.

i never tow my trailer in the snow. i use an equalizer (weight distribution)hitch, + electric brake controller. i set my level , then adjust gain. it's usually around the 12 o'clock position. no sway controls, never needed them.

I guess the question is was crossing that creek the only way home? if so why they idiots they wanted to get home. and for situations like that, the diesel weight is quite advantageous. And where is the army with the portable bridge gizmos when ya need em
Posted by: rescuediver
Festus, crossing the "creek" or in this case, the "raging river" is the only way on and off the beach/riding area. That's why if you noticed, when someone asked about ridng at Oceano/Pismo, they are always told to check out the tide scheduleIt would be nice, if they built a bridgeit would also get the tree huggers off "our backs" But then again, they would fight the "environmental report" that would be needed to construct oneand give courts another reason to close the areaDamned if you do and Damned if you don'timg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">These were just darn idiotsho shouldn't have tried it in the first place.

Great pics. Reminds me of the time a drunken buddy of mine though his Bronco could cross the Colorado River down near Needles. The river won that battle tooHis co-driver, Jack Daniels, was sure it was going to make it also.
You know what- park rangers don't think that stuff is that funny but we did at the time. At least it was fresh water, not salt water
Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior
As MD said, that's the ONLY way home (or out to the riding area.) The creek usually is about 1/4 mile from where you can ride from (Pole 2). During the winter is when you have to watch out. If you go when it storms, you can be stuck out there for a few days if it's bad enough. After about May there's nothing left of it. I rmember one time I "crossed" it, then realized I was at Pole 2. It tends to stay in roughly the same place. But the storms will move it around.
Roughly the creek comes to the beach, makes a left turn and runs south for several hundred feet, not quite 1/4 mile, then makes a right turns and dumps into the ocean.
Now, if it would only make a right turn instead of a left and take out the houses...
This year Mother Nature seems hell bent on doing a little renovation of her own.
If you:
Live in a house on the side of a hill
Live in a house in a river bottom
Drive your car through a river/stream during a storm
Don't complain when you lose it.
I think they should have waited to rescue the vehicles. Of course I'm sure the Sierra Club will try and use this against them. It's not like those trucks were going anywhere. Well, the second one (beige) may have become a floating seal rock.
Two more pics Pic 1 Pick Two

MD, depends on the policy. Had a friend total out a BEAUTIFUL '72 Blazer in the dunes. Covered. Won't say how much, but they low balled him based on a '73. Second go round he got about 5K more than he was hoping for. BR>
On the Glamis guys note...I was looking around the their site and found some stuff. Including a thread where the pics came from. There's more. A really good one that shows the erosion into the dunes. Hopefully they won't IMPORT more EUROPEAN beach grass to "stabilize" the dunes.
I came across an AWESOME video out of Alberta. It's over 4 megs but good. Audio is "Right Now."
Posted by: confusedbuyer
skinner, i saw that clip on our local web-site, www.quads.ca about a month ago. EVERYONE who saw it says it's the best message they've seen by far. It sends a chill up my spine every time I watch it. keep passing it around, the more people who see it, the better. I think the guy who made this is a visionary cuz Alberta really doesn't have a big problem or outcry YET... but like everywhere, I'm sure it's coming. it really is a great job, especially for an amatuer. a MUST SEE for everyone.
up here, we have gov't insurance, and all these burnt/abandoned vehs, whatever, MUST be recovered. Unfortunately, stupidity IS covered. and i think insurance would cover getting the veh unstuck.
Festus, you guys used to BAN tailgate parties, NOW, no alcohol (everyone drinks and hides it in plastic cups anyways). I've never seen more cops and sheriff dept guys. they just go to everyone's bbq and graze. kinda funny. so we go into the game and I'm raving about the great service.... there's a beer guy up and down the aisle almost as fast as we can guzzle 'em (being Yank beer, ya can drink 'em all day without a buzz ). In BC, you have to go to the concession for a beer, and line up for 15-20 minutes. you almost miss the whole quarter over a beer, and it's max 2 per customer. so i don't bother cuz you miss too much of the game. ANYWAYS.... I'm raving about this great beer service, and then the rotten #*&*@ cut-off beer sales at the end of half-time! whadda joke! I'd have stock-piled if i knew that !
my bro went 4-4 this weekend, both straight up, and against the spread. I was really surprised by the Jets. I wasn't surprised by the Vikes, cuz they've been capable all year of that type of performance, and i said at the start of the year that GB was an old, has-been team.

and hey, they don't "pay for anything" ... but they do cover lots more than avg. insurance co. they are run as a separate veh. ins. company and we pay high premiums for this coverage, so it really PO'es me to see it get abused so badly by people because it's OUR $$ that pays all the claims and dishonest people who set the rates. And Yes Festus, like everything socialized, there's a huge element of cross-subsidizing from good drivers to help the atrocious drivers. The co. has some good things too, like a huge road safety budget where they re-design high accident intersections, or pay the police to do big impaired driver checks or speed enforcement. and they usually get paid at an OT rate. they also have an entire dept. dedicated to rehabalitating the catastrophically injured. it's a perfect model for car ins. except you pay too much... but you do get royal coverage.

All this gettin cut off at half time i dunno about. Last game i was at we musta had 20 or 30 apiece. thats big money at a ball game. and no one cut us off. you must just be an obnoxious canadian. See they know who the canadians are and keep a close watch on you America is only the land of the free for americans
on the trail and riding area regulations. its all ridiculous and unfounded. its descrimination by liberals at its finest. If you have more riding areas in outlying districts then you bring business to those areas. People who ride quads generally spend money when they goto the area. on food, gas, lodging, Strip clubs and the sorts the econimic benifits for depressed areas far outweighs any minimal enviromental impact they have.

they may have kept selling beer at the concession for another quarter, that parts kinda foggy. definitely no beer guy bringing it to ya. i'd say after you had 20-30, you didn't know which quarter it was or where you were. you were probably laying on the floor of the Kingdome jail, hearing a replay of the game. "land of the free"... they have some kinda song they sing about that don't they? and you forgot to add the refugees are afforded the same rights and benefits. it's just poor lil 'ol Canada that you big bullies like to kick around. remember, we're passifists, so we'll just rollover and take it. i think you big bullies should go pick a scrap with China, cuz they're well on the way to next world suoer-power, and they've wiped out every job they can from the good 'ol US of A ( & Canada). too bad your major businesses are so tightly tied to them.
