It amazing to see that even farming has gone high tech. Look at the bottom line savings and increased yield

Creator, With farming, it's gone pretty much to the big farmers and hi-tech. No more ma and pa farmersike there used to be. Around here, they just sellout to the developersan't compete in todays marketairies have also gone hi-tech. Local dairyman went on vacationame back and his whole herd died of a disease(cat fell in feed mixer)and his brother-in -law(I think)fed the whole herd. They said he lost over 200 years of genentic research and would be years before his operation would make money againuckily, he was well liked in the dairy community and they pitched in and gave him some of their producing cowsverything is computer controlled, milking, feeding, breeding, etc.

I aint for control via the chip. Just a flippin tag. Like a liscense or anything else. with scanning the chip a doctor could pull up your medical records and possibly make the right life or death descision with medications and crap. Their and many many positives to chips, and 0 negatives.

The particular ranch that we did all that work for is some 9,000 acres. I was suprised too. We barely touched what they ran. Maybe 2500 acres total. They have a HUGE cooler/plant out there. 12KV service and all.
The ranch itself doesn't own most of that. It's owned by different people. It's funny out there if you look at an older ranch. The holdings are in the name of kids. You'd have a kid, put the land it that kid's name so you would get water rights. Each person was limited in the amount water they got rights to. The ranch was started by a guy. He died in NY when he went back with the first load of produce via train. The company then moved to his wife, then their daughter and now her husband runs the place. And their kids now work there. Well, some of them do. I think it dates back to the 30s or 40s.
Posted by: rescuediver
Skinner, That's a major operation thereIt's good the kids kept the ranch goingYea, alot of smaller farmers joined together to build a co-op to survives a small player, it's hard to make a living anymore
Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior
I'm not sure how involved the kids are in the operation. I know they are late-20s early 30s in age range. But from what I kinda suspect, work for them is sitting in the office. Porsche Boxters don't handle the fields too well out there. I know the irrigation company guys morso. THe dad is a Mech. Engineer so he's into the technical stuff. He's just an a** hole.
The ranch owners own an irrigation company and we deal with them. They have somewhat of a clue. That company is run by a father and son team. The dad is a little unorganized, but the son is. Nice kid. Oh, and he rides a YZ125. Haven't ridden with him yet. Poor guy was involved in a triple fatality in Firebough. Had a farm worker van pull out in front of him. Earlier in the morning, just after midnight, his sister was robbed at gunpoint. Not a good day for that family.
Some of the irrigation contractors out there have no clue, especially WRT the electrical side. We like to do things a certain way. Like put PVC pipe in under the concrete pads, and stub up through the pad. But they never gives us a chance to do it. This time it was a rush job. So it jacks up the cost for the owner. It's not cheap to put in GRC (galvanized Rigid Conduit) as opposed to PVC. More material and labor. And these farmers don't even know their APNs. Fresno County is always XXX-YYY-ZZo (o=option. usually like an S). I get APNs of like say 12-34-56. All that area is always say 120-034-56o so I can call the county and ask for the real APN.

No doubt I'll get another PM from her blaming me for Hoss' misogenistic ways. or is it a him?? remember, you guys said this was some fat-a$$ 50 y/o sitting in his basement playing a tune on his skin flute? and i did notice the sexy photos are gone.

Confused, Today or now, it's yesterday, I put the recoil start on our 160. Easy job, only had to remove the cover on the left side of the engine(four 8mm screws) pulled the rubber cap off the shaft, put "o" ring and spacer on, then pre-greased bearing, coupler, tightened down lock washer and 14mm nut to 35 lbs. Finally put recoil unit/cover on with new gasket that was provided, re-tightened the four screws, to 8lbs. Started like a charm on first pull

Welcome to the forums Don49. Sorry to hear about your son.
Congrats Lil' Joe...my older bro has XM and loves it. I'm kind of stuck with CD's, but that's okay. Most stations don't play the kind of music that I listen to...but I'm sure not into the crap that Creator listens to. BR>
And sorry all for my absenteeism (sp?). Work has been, well...lots of work. I've been handed a corporate job that has me busy. However, I just got a new Toshiba laptop yesterday with wireless highspeed. ....oh, my wife wants to know what the hell I'm doing siting on a PC (on a Saturday afternoon). I really need to get outside and do some PM's on my truck, car, 5th wheel, etc. (no rest for the wicked).
Glad to see that MD is checking out how the other half lives (monster truck people).j/k
Skinner, got a big date planned for this evening? If not, I'll send some of my overflow to you.BR>
Later gang...duty calls.

<DIV class=postcolor>You know you're from Fresno when...
1. You have to explain to friends from out of town what animal a "Tri-tip" comes from.
2. You think salsa goes on everything.
3. Drivers think a red light is just a suggestion.
4. Your out-of-town friends start to visit after October, but clear out before the end of April.
5. The best restaurants in town start with "El" or "Los."
6. You think $400 a month rent is way too high.
7. You know a swamp cooler is not a happy hour drink.
8. People break out coats when the temperature drops below 70.
9. The pool can be warmer than you are.
10. You realize that Valley Fever isn't a disco dance.
11. You still don't know your way around downtown.
12. Anywhere "and 99" is too far away.
13. You think you're better than people from Clovis.
14. Someone mentions the Fair and your thoughts immediately turn to Cinnamon Rolls.
15. You drive just as fast on a sunny day in June as a foggy day in December.
16. You have to explain to someone about "G Street."
17. The whole town shuts down at 11:00.
18. You complain about how boring Fresno is, but still make fun of people from Sanger, Selma, Dinuba, Orange Cove, Orosi, Caruthers, Kingsburg, Hanford, Parlier, Lemoore, Visalia, Tular, Porterville, etc.
19. You hadn't been to Manchester Center in 10 years until the movie theater opened.
20. You never knew how you managed before River Park.
21. Someone from out-of-town talks about how foggy it is and tell them, "Just wait."
22. You know not to take Shaw at 8, 12, or 5.
23. You swear there was an orchard there last week, where now there are houses. </DIV>

You don't know fog until you've been in Fresno for December and January. Can't even see the end of the hood on a Ford Super Duty. Actually the worst is down around Kingsburg. Or anywhere along the Kings River as it actually HAS water in it.

Don
greetings from the great white north. I had a '97 PSD crewcab (non-dually), same colors as yours, same bush guard and brush guard. IMHO, i think that's the best color combo Ford EVER came up with for the PSD. After '97, they never offered that combo again.
sounds like your son's accident musta been a real tragedy. my sincere condolences for your loss.

thanks for the info MD.if we keep it, i'll seriously consider it. Spanky is/was Robert Blake, n'est pas?
monster truck in Vancouver is embarassing for the city. it's a drunken goon show. the drivers hate us, cuz it gets so rowdy, drinking, pot smoking, fights, people jump the fence and run on the arena floor (it's held in a 60,000 people INDOOR football stadium). I think they should just run em over if they wanna jump on the track. But it is very entertaining except for those few morons.
cuz it smelled like so much pot, these young punks in front of us decide to light up cigarettes. This big 'ol farm boy beside me had enough and taps the puke on the shoulder and says calmly, "You can't smoke in here". The punk is just about to roll off the lips "fu** you", as he tuns around. He nearly crapped when he saw the real-life, young Hoss. Quickly put out the smoke.
some drunken a$$ was being chased by security and came running up the stairs, just as a 5 y/o kid was stepping into the aisle to leave. this idiot flattens the kid in full speed. The only good that came from it was the kid slowed down the puke and he got tackled by 2-3 security guys. I REALLY, REALLY hope those security guys and cops turned that guy into a punching bag, cuz it was sickening what he did to that poor little kid.
after 4 years of going, we got tired of the lack of security from the event organizer and haven't been back.

enjoy Toyo. i just got back from Kelowna. My dad and i replaced the idler arms and all 4 shocks on my '97 GMC Safari van. sure did see a lotta Washington plates on the Coquihalla Hwy. I think there was a hockey tournament in the interior somewhere.
this was our Thanksgiving weekend. i see you guys had Columbus day. is that a holiday? did everyone get a 3 day weekend? I played golf with pa on saturday and shot my best round in 2 years. despite what that moron sportscaster said about Justin Mourneau and New Westminster (he plays for the Minnesota Twins... just like Corey Koskie..another Canadian, and Larry Walker for the Cards, and Paul Quantrill for the Yankees,and..). Oops, anyways, he said we have Moose in New West and 55 degrees is a hot sumer day. But it sure was warm and sunny on Saturday. We love those stereo-type images.

Confused, Yes, today was Columbus day. Some work places and Gov't agencies had a 3 day weekend. Some are taking tomorrow off, instead. I know what you mean about stereotyping, that's something, I myself have never done

Thanksgiving? WTH? And don't get me started on Columbus (AKA: Euro-trash / native destroyer / pre-conquistador).img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> And no, we didn't get the day off. We take all the lame government holiday's over the Christmas break (of course I'm expected to be at work every holiday).
Broke my winch cable on the 500. It also has a broken throttle cable, too. Oh well, it's only money. Does anyone have some they'll loan me?
Posted by: nedflanders
how did you bust those 2 cables? what was winch cable rated for?
Part of my mall space lease agreement for the Leftorium requires that I be open on Sunday. Being open on the day of the sabbath is just plain wrong. Luckily, I can hire a student for that day and not have to incur the wrath of Rev. Lovejoy for missing church while working.
Posted by: Whitewater
The winch is rated at 2000 lbs. I used it a lot this past year and it got tangled up in the spool / frayed. It actually broke while I was using the snowplow. Luckily it wasn't under a load, cuz I'm sure it would have come back at me and ruined my handsome good looks.
The throttle cable attachment was damaged when Kyler rolled it last July. I JB welded it, but it didn't hold.
Posted by: nedflanders
WTF is your 7 y/o son doing riding a Sportsman 500, and rolling it? Do you also let him drive your PSD? if he can't reach the pedals, you could probably make some blocks for his feet. They make 90cc kids models now ya know!
you got snow already? (hee-hee-hee, ha-ha-ha, snicker, snicker). I bet they don't even have snow in canada yet, where confused is. Happy plowing.

I hadda work fer the day too

We're in the same boat as you trasher. No snow. Well, it did up, WAY UP, above LJ, I think.
My last vacation was ummm two years ago I think. Now I just take a day here or there to get a jump on the nut cases driving to Pismo or Hollister. I need to take a day or two and head up to the Forest.
I had to actually do work around here today. Supervisor is putting a pool in his place. Had to transfer the house plan from the plans when the house was built, to CAD. Cut into my Internet time. hehehe.
Posted by: Whitewater
Skinner, I think work has totally encroached upon my internet / FBK time. Hey I have an idea! All of you should donate to the Hoss Scholarship fund...then I can quit my job and get one like Festus'.

I'm donating to the Skinner Fund for Slackers. It's got like $1.90 in it at the moment. All donation are not tax deductable and must be in cash or in-kind contributions.

2x4s cut into 4 inch lengths make good stilts, when duct taped to pedals or floorboards

ya, but what do they do to supplement the mass blood flow loss to the brain as a result of pumping the blood everywhere else? clearly, this has caused or contributed to Hoss' recent crisis. maybe Hoss was undergoing severe roid-rage to go with his PSD road-rage!

I'm still looking for a candidate. Check out the Environment area with the newest Kerry thread. At least the morons with the "long posts blow don't go around there."
A Mormon Pres. hmmm would he have cute daughters who were of age and available? lol. Actually a Mormon wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of getting elected to Pres. Hell, there's only been on Catholic. Most are Protestant. The only way a Mormon would win was if he was up against an avid Atheist.
Posted by: confusedbuyer
BTW, i need to elicit the opinions of my FBK pals. I've decided i want to get the wife a Honda 250. I like the size and weight to fit on the quad deck, plus it's shaft drive so it should be one less quad to have to do major maintenance on all the time (chain tension, sprockets and lube really are a pain after awhile).
So, there are some 2003 electric shift models for sale for about $2300 US.i like the idea of the electric shift. They are "fully serviced and maintained" ex-rentals. they are from Whistler (you know, world class ski resort, site of the 2010 winter Olympics). I think they've been used for tours. so i'd guess about 2 years of use, 6 months of the year. probably not ridden that hard in a tour group, but i'd guess they must have pretty good hours on them.
there was a private sale for a similar quad, but NO electric shift option and 3 years older (2000 model). Probably less use. they want $2,700(US) for that one. ANd there are two 250 EX models that are both 2004, private sales, like new. they're asking $3,700, might take $3,500. These are the Sportrax models with no electric shift, no racks, slightly different gearing, not exactly what i want. so what would you get?

I'd stay away from the rental quad. If everyone drove it like I would, it would be "trashed"(hence the name)
Posted by: confusedbuyer
ya, if it was rental vs. tour, that's huge. On a tour, i think it's pretty hard to do anything too stupid. On rental, the owner has no clue what you're doing.
when Bush delivered that ultimatum to Canada, i thot he was a real horses a$$.it sounds like something a wife would say to box you in a corner in one of those impossible-to-win arguments. NOW, he's never found the WOMD, and looks like an even bigger fool (if that was possible). Altho I'm surprised they didn't just plant some U-239 with A-bomb blueprints, just to justify their actions to the rest of the world.I'm glad they turfed Saddam, glad they took out 1 small piece of the middle east (they still have a long way to go there ). I agree with a lot of republican beliefs. I just don't like the cowboy at the controls.
DOH! here we go again talkin politics. I must give you or Toyo credit tho. You said the republicans come out and say they support Bush PERIOD! The Kerry supporters are too timid or afraid and just say they're undecided. I guess it saves them getting swarmed and pummelled by a group of angry red-neck republicans. "I dunno" is the same as sayin I'm a Pinko-commie but don't want to come out and admit it. So, "I dunno"!!! DOH!!

Confused, I would stay away from rentals, especially if they were used at PismoBut, I agree with what you are saying. If, they are being used as a sightseeing vehicle, you'd think they would be less likely to be abusedseeing they probably have a guide with them. Price seems high though, IMO

I don't agree with everything that Bush does, and I'm pretty much an independant, but he's got my vote.

That sounds about right but I'm not positive because I don't pay a lot of attention to the route numbers. I pretty much know where I can and can't go without getting lost. I can ride from my house in Yucca Valley to my in-laws place in Pioneer Town. Top off the tank and ride all the way to Baldwin Lake and back. It's a nice easy ride and very scenic especially when there is snow.
Posted by: Trasher
ya, it's just east of Baldwin lake so I think your on the same road. I rode there during a flash flood one time. It was unrealBR>The road just turned into a river in secondsBR>
Also, the pic of you jumping is where I broke three of my ribs. There was a jump there that was offcamber and I hit it on my 250R three wheeler tapped in 4th, with snow on the ground. I then met the find folks at the Big Bear Hospital

Had to check them out. The photos are to show a certain part of the Queen but I think everyone is missing her best feature. Her smile is fantastic.
Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior
She has a smile? What's that anyways?
Posted by: nedflanders
i never noticed a smile. in these parts, the "smile" is the crack that shows up from the rear of loose fitting pants, like a plumber's smile. Homer, in particular, has quite the plumber's smile happening. not that I'm attracted to it, but i'm sure Hoss would be, in a prison cell-mate kinda way.
and DQ, since i made you laff, you owe it to us to divulge the full story. otherwise these twitsed perverts will just keep speculating with their own demented fantasies. and that could be very dangerous with Toyo and Hoss because they yap and post so much on the kiddie forums, and like to make up wild, outlandish rumors with no regard to truth.

and DQ, if beech ain't doing his 4AM servicing, who is there in his place?? Ya know, they don't call me 24/7 Ned for nuthin! But there's no point in blowin my own horn here (although i really wish i could), cuz Toyo claims to be the King of satisfying the women, which i translate to mean the inflatables or livestock. he obviously has committment issues since he admits he can count the weeks of his longest term committment on 2 hands!

Why thanks Hoss. When we bought this place (about 1-1/2 years ago) I remember the realtor showing me through the house and I just couldn't focus because I really wanted to see the barn. Now that's funny!BR>
The reason the thing isn't broken in yet is because I've too busy to take any "real" trips in it lately. Maybe next year I'll get to rack up some milage. And with gas prices the way they are I'm really excited about the prospect.

pick a middle-eastern country.... Iraq perhaps??? OR, those damn canadians are producing a lot of oil out of Alberta and British Columbia, let's take them over. They're all a bunch of pinko-commie passivists anyways, that just protect draft-dodgers.

DQ, we REALLY don't want to know what little "games" you and beach are in to. That's one of those things best left behind closed doors. Well, at least I don't want to know. So is anyone riding this weekend? Looks like I might be heading up and playing in LJ's backyard. Temps are going to be in the low 80s down in the Valley, so figure a 10 degree drop from there up in the Forest. Hopefully the dust will be down, but I'm not all that hopefull. But rain is a coming. I just looked...anyone in for some mudding? Looks like 30% chance of rain on Sunday. Temp @ 70 on the valley floor (65 @ Oakhurst).
I'd like to ride this weekend, but it's the Elk hunt (too crowded).

i learned to LIE MY A$$ OFF when wife asks how this hair cut looks, or blah blah blah. I've learned that by being HONEST (= "insensitive and cruel"), they start bawling or pouting, so take the high road and say whatever it is they wanna hear. "Oh, why yes dear, the mohawk cut looks fabulous. Here i thought you might be the off-spring of an acid trip induced sexual encounter i had once with a chicken".
so i'm just hulk-like frustrated with the LT160. I got these clunky rear end noises. went and bought a buncha new parts and turns out i already have one of the collars (the dust seal goes over it, I thought it was one piece; there was a waste of $15). as soon as I tighten the 2 big axle lock nuts, the noises come back (kinda like the voices Toyo hears everyday, luring him to the playground). I'm guessing it's time to take the whole thing apart and replace the wheel bearings. Outside shot the axle could be bent.. i don't wanna guess what that might cost.
worse yet, wifey cleaned out 8 years worth of accumulation from our closet (back when i was 31" waist and chiselled, and she was size 6...whatever, real thin). now, we're both resigned to the current mass and have decided charity could use the stuff more than us, which is okay too. BUT, she's planned my weekend to build closet organizers and i want to fix the quad. guess who wins that dilemna?

When we first moved out to CA 2 years ago we were living with my grandma. After we finnaly sold our house in texas we went looking for a place to live.
One of the places we looked at and and had actually started the buying process had a 4000sqft shop.It was about 45x95ft.. only 2 years old.........But unfortunatly the sellers didnt find a house and backed out.

Well, I hate to break the news to you, but, the chicken encounters happen more then you think right here in the Great state of Calefornea'. We have a deputy at work, he actually caught a guy in the actalk about being confusedno pun intendedNeedless, to say, the deputy now has a nickname Colonel Chickenent to a call, rancher couldn't figure out why 5 gallon buckets were being found turned up side down in his pasturefter a couple of weeks went by, he finally found out why, ranch hand was getting chummy with the cows in the field. Gives a new meaning to "milking the cows"BR>

On the 160, I would venture to guess, that if you tried everything else, then the bearings might be shotid you or the kids do anything to bend the axle? they just don't bend on their ownBR>

Hey chick magnet,
Did you sit your fat ass on your kids quad? Is that why it's broken?
Posted by: confusedbuyer
sshhhh! listen, ya can't tell anyone... but it was from a menage-et-trois. two chicks decided i'd be the meat in their sandwhich.
okay, one bearing was toast and what a chore to get it out. the other one was okay, but while ya got it apart, why not go all the way (even though i'm selling it next week). told ya, i'm a good person to buy used stuff from. but the bearings are $30 each (from auto-parts store) and i can't find the seals anywhere, so far. there's always the stealership.

A confused sandwich? I'm sure the two sheep were left unsatisfied. Baaaaaaa....that's my daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaady.
Yeah, I went to the stealership today and forked over a hundred bucks.

you Utah people are so presumptious. This is Canada; it was a moose and an Elk. Duh!
So i got off cheap at $80? I still need 2 seals. And i had the strangest groove worn in my axle in line where the seal is supposed to ride. hopefully JB Weld will fix it good enough. I can also put a Speedy sleeve over it. The sleeve is $45 and it's a thin piece of nothing metal. It looks like it should cost less than a $1. whadda gyp. I'm too frugal to own atvs, everytime i go to buy something for them, i shake my head at the ridiculous prices. glad i don't own Polaris or it would just be 10 times as often.

Well it should be interesting and NOT DUSTY tomorrow if I make it up to ride. Got a message from LJ that's it's stormin pretty good. Radar is showing a lot of precip up in that area as well. Might need a tow strap to pull me into the staging are and back out. THough there's a small parking area right by the highway. And there's a 50% chance of rain. My luck I'd get sicker than hell. We'll see what the morning brings. Besides rain and cool damp air.

You nailed it when you typed "reasonable force". On the subject, I'll say that the officer or no one else is worth my career or my family's welfare. If, a officer blantantly crosses the line, then, he'll have his day. In today's society, there really is no code of silence. People get to caught up in the theatrics of T.V. I am not saying it doesn't happen, I do live in the real world. But, I can tell you, we've had officers loose their jobs over the accusations of what you typednd, officers turned them inut, remember we are human and just like everyone else; "Innocent until proven guilty" or "Rather be tried by 12, then, carried by 6"

oooohhhh! I really hit a nerve! Hey, i say walk a mile in the cop's shoes and then see how you'd react. I think some of these scrotes do need a LITTLE rough up, but i guess that can cross the line very easily if you're not careful. Unfortunately, sometimes there's an assumption after dealing with nothing but scrotes, that EVERYONE is a scrote, and that's when a relatively innocent person gets something they don't deserve.
hey, why aren't you watching your beloved baseball? That good Canadian kid (Quantrill) is in the mound to face the heart of the Sox order. 12th inning, great game. C'mon Sox!! I despise the Yankees.

That's all we can ask of the general public. Hit a nerve? yes you didPeople snub their noses everyday at the scum, officers see and deal with everyday.
Posted by: confusedbuyer
people snub their noses at the scum??did you mean to say they snub the police?? i think people are more like, "Awww, look at that poor-had-a-tough-life-crackhead (or thief, or murderer). We really need to help them". And then they jump on the authorities for ENFORCING the law. I've tried to help some people like this before, and all I've ever got in return was being burned for $$ or possesssions.
I took 9 y/o to a football game and we had beggar after beggar hitting us up. NO WAY! I told Jr. i work too hard for my $$ and they choose not to, plus they'll use the $$ for booze or drugs, not food or shelter, and i refuse to support their habit. when i have a surplus of $$, maybe then. for now, it's better donated to a charity that might try to help with food or shelter. if it's a busker who does something to try and entertain me like playing an instrument or putting on a show, I'll throw $$ in the hat, at least they worked for it.
ya, time to unload some of the excess. the 160 really is better than the Breeze, but it's too hard for my 16 y/o daughter to ride 5-speed (female=less brain activity), and it'll be easier for 7 y/o when he's ready. Plus this 160n has had a rough life, so I anticipate it could have problems down the road.
