My step father has a 250 ext cab LB with the 7.3
Friends of the family have owned about 5 in the last few years. All of these were 350 7.3 auto crew cab. One dually and 4 LB's.

I have driven them all. They are great and have a lot of power. Fuel milelage is around 17-18 unloaded or with a few k pounds out back. We have used them to haul 38' triple axle quad slide fifth wheels with great success. They tow and haul like a dream.

Posted by: Trasher

Does anybody here have a Ford Crew Cab Diesel with the 7.3 Diesel engine? If so, what year do you have and how do you like it? I am looking at getting one to haul the toys.

Thanks!

I see you know my area. You're right, that hill is brutal.BR>To be fair, when I had a new tranny put in at around 96K miles I honestly thought it was the 2nd tranny for the truck. To my surprise the dealer called me and asked when I had put a new tranny in. My response was "what new tranny? You mean that's not the original tranny?" The dealer who sold me the truck a few years before never disclosed the fact that the truck (with only about 50K) had already been through one tranny. Apparently Ford had no record of doing such work so my guess is the person who had the truck before me blew the tranny and them slammed another one in just to get rid of it. It could be that the 2nd tranny wasn't factory. Anyway, it wasn't a very nice experience but again I don't think it's all that typical. I did not have a chip or anything other than a K&N filter. I think I was afraid to put any more stress into that tranny.

I own a 2000 F250 Crew - longbed. It's a sweet hauler!! I pull a 29ft 5th wheel (loaded) and a 15ft 3-place trailer behind it (loaded with 2-Polaris Sportsman, generator, gas, picnic tables, kids' bikes, extra water, etc.). I drive up very steep roads, and it does just fine. I can pretty much go as fast as the corners will let me. I also use it as my daily driver...work is 1000ft. climb in elevation. However, I wish I had the 6.0 Liter.

Summary: It's a great truck, and is very comforatable to drive and ride in.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

so whitewater, you pull 2 trailers at the same time??like an 'A'-train?? I've never seen or heard of that (other than tractor trailer units). Is that only legal in Utah?

just4kicks, is there anyone else in Palm Springs besides us canucks?? I've got friends in Yucca Valley, they lived near Old Woman Springs Road (i think was the name). You could ride out from their yard, pretty much forever. They rented a beautiful house from some "weekenders" (a name he said you locals call the folks from LA that come to play on weekends).

Hey confusedbuyer,

Doubles is fairly common out here in the west. We pull two trailers and one of them is NOT a 5th wheel. We call it the "Adventure Train". Check out my pictures for a look. You have to pay a little more attention when you're doing this, but it's worth it when you get there...

I know exactly where Old Woman Springs Road is. Old Woman Springs heads North of the 62 Hwy. If you take the same road South of the 62 it is called Joshua Lane...I am about 4 miles up off Joshua Lane, almost to the end. And you're right, I can head right out my gate and ride further than a tank of gas would allow. Let me know if you are ever up in the area with your friends and we'll go out and tear it up. I'll be riding around Pioneer Town this weekend if you know where that is.

Mr. Tommy,

I liked the pictures and your signature is a keeper (too funny). My bro and I take our families camping together (pulling doubles...my bros rig looks like your set-up); we stretch out there for about 150ft. My neighbors just love me when we park our rigs out in the street. I think they are all jealous of our toys. I can hear thier kids say "Daddy, why do the Larsen kids get to go camping and 4-wheeling, and all we have is an Atari to play with?"- just kidding! It's fun!!

Confusedbuyer,

I get a little bit nervous pulling two trailers, but I check everything out thoroughly. There is a law on how long your rig can be, but I don't think it's enforced much. I think it's 72ft. in Utah. That's about how long my rig is.

Posted by: rescuediver

In California you can get a Recreational Class A license to pull double trailers. In California, you can not be longer then 65 feet in total length.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

must be fun trying to back up with 2 trailers... could take awhile, so be patient. I love being set up at camp, relaxed with a nice cold beverage, and then watching a husband and wife show up after a long, miserable day of driving. Then they bicker as one gives the other poor backing directions. Free entertainment! Even better when you hear a scrape or bang!

just4kicks, Pioneer town is the old ghost town, or it was a set made in the 50's for western movies ?? It's pretty cool, and nothing around, except I have a vague recollection of a store around there where we got a few wobbly-pops.

Mr. Tommy, Nevada is great, and it rarely rains.... but you gotta get out more and come and explore the Great White North!!we got desert, rainforest, MOUNTAINS... the huge ones. Mud.. But we are full of pinko "save the guay whales for jesus" groups that never stop whining about everything, so you got us there. And hunting, doesn't get any better than here. a moose... great eatin, better than beef.

You guys should check my set-up out at www.quads.ca. Under the forum "trip and events", there's a topic, "canucklehead's atv moving skills". I've posted a couple of pics of our F350 crewcab dually, with a snowmobile deck converted to haul 4 quads, and a 30' travel trailer behind. Just seems easier than hauling 2 trailers, or using those trailers where you park the quad in the kitchen.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Rescue...do you need doubles endorsement on a Class A Non-Comm as they do with a Class A Comm? The license chart I found never said anything about endorsements on Class A Non-Comm. Only endorsement I saw was the 5th endorsement on 10K-15K. Just liking to add to my knowledge.

It's funny when friends call me up to ask me how much their truck weighs... 38' Fifth (15.8K GVWR) will work a F-350 CC LB 4x4 V-10 out I guess. Shoulda got a diesel. I just wanna see what those beasts weigh combined.

Posted by: Whitewater

Hey Rescuediver,

I looked up Utah law on trailer length, and it's similar to California law (65 ft.), but if it is longer than that, an annual permit is required. However, a CDL is not required. I miscalculated my length in a previous post - I'm at about 62 ft with my truck and both trailers.

Does anyone own the 6.0 Liter? How does it rate compared to the 7.3?

Posted by: MrTommy

Whitewater, your sig is a keeper as well. Cracked me up. As an aside, I pull triple trailers for a living, currently between Salt Lake and Reno. I stopped at the Por of Entry at Wendover a few months back to check on the legal length of trailer-trailer combinations. The guy says, "How long ARE you?" I told him I wasn't sure. He said as long as I was under 65 feet (we're talking personal vehicles here) I was OK. So we rushed out and bought a 100 foot measuring tape and found that we're 63 feet from the tip of the winch to the end of the spare tire on our travel trailer. Whew... The reason I was even asking was, we WERE signed up to go to that ATV Jamboree in Marysvale, but once it came time to bid on vacations I wasn't able to get that week. Drat. Though the more I think about it, and from all the coverage I've seen on TV, it almost looks like just plain "too many people" and too much dust. At least that's how we're getting over not being able to go - ha.

Confused Buyer - We'd LOVE to get up that way, but with my current situation (not retired yet) I think we'd spend too much time driving to have much time left to do anything once we DID get there. It'll be on our list of "things to do" once we have more time. I think the last moose I saw was back in the 70's when I lived in Chicago and went on a weeklong canoe trip up into the Quetico Provincial Park just above Minnesota. Great memories.

Posted by: Whitewater

Hey Trasher, did you ever buy a truck? We have kind of diverged from the original subject.

Confusedbuyer, I guess I'm the confused one. I looked for your pics on your America Jr. (Canada)...Just kidding.... ATV site, but I couldn't find it. Help?

MrTommy, what do you haul? New Horse Trailers? I usually stay away from trips like Marysville. I'm kind of a loner when it comes to riding. It gets so damn dusty when you have a bunch of people riding together. Hell, I can't hardly stand riding behind one 4-wheeler, let alone a bunch of them. I like to ride this time of year because it's usually kind of wet here in the Utah mountains. In mid-summer and fall, I tend to Donn a dust mask. Dust sucks!! Oh, and I see moose and Elk almost daily (usually as road kill). Never eaten a moose before.

2004YF2450, gees Mr. Just checked out yer toys and u must be rich!! Seriously, looks like you have alot of fun!! Like the dumbell set in your garage.

Posted by: Trasher

Whitewater,

Funy you should ask about the truck. Yes, I just found a clean 2001 F-350 oil burner. Haven't towed with it yet but I have liked driving it around town. I'll be traveling for a couple of weeks at the end of July and will find out how it pulls then.

Thanks everyone for all the great info.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

Mr. Tommy,it's a 2 day drive from Nevada (2 long days, but easy with no kids).

Whitewater, the site is http://www.quads.ca . From the home page, click on the "Discussion Forums" link. Then, click on the "General Topics" (sorry, I told you "trips and events" before, but it's been moved from there). About 3/4 of the way down the list of topics is one called "Canucklehead's atv moving skills", dated March 21/04. Click on that topic. There are photos of the truck, trailer and 4 quads on the deck, on page 1 of this topic. On page 2 of the same topic, there are photos of just the truck with 4 quads on the deck, but I've strapped them on a little different, because 2 are bigger quads than the other photo. We still pull the trailer with the bigger 4 quads on there though.

Let me know if that works.

Posted by: MrTommy

Whitewater, in answer to your question "what do I haul?", I put a picture of my 'set' in my pictures area. I was nabbing a "Geocache" at the "Hunter" exit just west of Elko, NV at the time. Oh, and I usually make my wife ride in the number two spot, so SHE eats the dust, not me. Ha. Actually, she volunteers to ride second spot. That way when we get lost, it's ALWAYS my fault...

Confusedbuyer, I'm still getting used to our new "Adventure Train" trailer setup. It doesn't pull the same as my 'work train' and I'm not sure I really like it. But other options are few, so I just may have to grin and bear it. I really hate to spend four days of vacation driving when we can go somewhere nearby in a few hours, be set up, and having a martini, all in less than a day. This is another roadblock to our going to the ATV Jamboree in Utah.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

Okay, now you REALLY need to see my set-up so you can see a different option to your trailer train. My previous post gave easy directions to find a pic. The deck is 100% aluminum. My wife and I can easily load it. Did it myself once with sawhorses. You'd easily fit 2 quads on this deck, plus you've got lots of storage in your truck box for spare tires, riding gear, etc...

I hear ya, 4 days of travel does suck, unless you're going for a minimum of 2 weeks, preferrably more.

Posted by: rescuediver

BlackandRed, Yes, you will need to get a doubles endorsement. If you get the Ca. Commercial Driver Handbook, you will need to study sections 2,5,6 and 7. Basicaly you will need to take a written test and a test to show you can back up a truck/trailer. One of the test is parallel parking into a space 10 feet wider then the length of your combination. The double endorsement is a written portion of the test. No road way driving with doubles. Lt. Dan

Posted by: rescuediver

Confused, I have a similiar set up as yours with the rack in the back of the truck, Looks like you have a 8 foot bed to give you the added room on the back for the extra quads. On mine, it's a 6 foot bed with just enough room for 2 full size quads. And yes, it does give you a lot of room underneath for generator, firewood and additional camping gear.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

I'm 8' wide and 9'6" long with a hinged beavertail.

Posted by: MrTommy

Confusedbuyer, I followed your instructions and checked out your photos. Nice setup. I've seen variations on that before. Having a dualy really helps in situations like that. I gave fleeting thought to a 'drive-up' deal that would load from the side, but our utility bed top sits almost eye level and the steepness of that approach was just too scary. Our "Adventure Train" setup will be just fine - ha. I don't know HOW you get all four of those quads up there, with some standing. You deserve some kind of award.

Posted by: Whitewater

Confused,
Nice truck!! I have friends with the same set-up. It works well with a dually.

MrTommy,
When you said pull triples, you really meant it. My Dad and Bro are truck trivers (but, not a life for me).

Posted by: racingisntjust4boys

I have a 2002 Ford f350 w/ 7.3. (not stock) crew cab, long box with a 6" lift. I love it! I pull anything you can think of. In summer i pull a 30 ft 5th wheel camper with a 2 place snowmobile trailer with 2 four wheelers behind it, Or a 40 ft enclosed trailer where i pull a race car or snowmobiles, or atvs and dirt bikes. I pull my race car some times 900 miles to montana and i still get go gas mileage. I think it a investment.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

hey, are you sure you aren't the same person as mudisntjustforboys? But in that post you had a 2003 Powerstroke with a 6" lift, now it's a 2002 with a 3" lift. And you had a 26' enclosed trailer, but now it's 40'.....amazing what happens if you keep adding water to them things!!Is your's a dually? If you own all those toys, sleds, race cars, quads, trailers, then i think you should change your name to everymansdreamgirl, or, 2good2Btru!! BR>
we need way more women like you! Oh, and if you are the same person, I meant to comment on your previous signature.. "always wear clean underwear because you never know when they'll be cut off by the paramedics"..

Now I wear 'em clean just cuz it's the sanitary thing to do, but the way i see it, if the paramedics are cutting them off of me, there's an excellent chance I'll have just filled them.img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

Hey Confused, you've got too much time on your hands... I didn't even notice the likeness of the posts between the two ladies. So... off I went in search of the 'original' one. I think you're right. Only the first one has some pictures posted. I checked them out and "Mudisntjust4boys" is a nice looking lady, at least in the picture where she's riding the quad. And that's an awesome Dodge in the background.

Ok, you're in charge of matching up all posts that sound alike - ha.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

actually, my wife looked at the first post/pics, and told me about it. I was convinced that this is every man's perfect lady!! I saw the second post... I sure hope you're the real thing otherwise you just shattered our dreams!

Posted by: Whitewater

I think it's some old guy trying to pull our chain. MrTommy, is it you? Sorry, you're not THAT old.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

if it is some old guy, what a shame, cuz the lady on that quad looks stunning, and just when I thought no-such dream woman existed, someone has to destroy it!! I dunno tho, there's a profile with a name.... Naw, I'll keep dreaming, they can't take away my dreams!

Posted by: Whitewater

Just added some pics of my truck (F-250 w/7.3), my machines, and the "Fun Train". I'd call it the "Soul Train", but I'm too Danish.

And Confused, I think a woman like that is photo edited into the picture. She / he, is just a figment of your imagination. However, keep dreaming. A creative imagination comes in handy from time to time...

Posted by: confusedbuyer

hey whitewater, great pics. You have a great looking family. I never noticed the mohawk on the youngest in your pic, until I clicked on it. If the principal couldn't see the humor in it, he should be in a different line of work. He sounds like mullah omar, one of the Al Quaida generals who complained that the AL Quaida troops looked bad cuz their turbans were unkept and crooked during battle. Maybe that'd be a good job for him??

I can't believe you went from being raised on a farm to new home suburbia. It looks like a great neighborhood with nice, new homes, but I'd trade that stuff in a snap for acreage and the ability to leave from my back door to go for a ride, or to have a place to ride. Of course, my wife would opt for the new home on a postage stamp size lot.... but where are you gonna put the toys dear?? Funny, we always call 'em 4-wheelers too!

Posted by: Whitewater

Yeah, I went from 400 acres to .25. It really sucks, but land is quite expensive here. I love looking out my back door to see my neighbors eating dinner. I'm trying to grow poplars on the fence line (they grow 3-5 ft/year). Luckily, my town is a small farming community. I live a couple of streets from the edge of town, so I can hop on the 500 and hit the foothills.

I park all the toys on the side of the house, and I'm sure I look like white trash. I haven't put in an RV pad yet, so the 5th wheel is sitting on grass. Cement is going to cost me about 6K. I'm looking at getting a sled this year, and I'm not sure where I'm going to put it. Maybe I'll park the wife's Lexus on the street, and put my toys in the garage.

Posted by: Whitewater

Confused,

Speaking of the Mohawk; it started out as just a gag, but soon turned into my own little study on human behavior. He seemed to draw a crowd. I would hear people say things like, "Oh hell, look at that; I can't believe his parents would do that" or "Cool hair". We went to a furniture store to spend some cash, and no one would wait on us. It was actually kind of nice to browse without all of the pressure. Usually, they won't leave you alone in those stores. I ended up spending 3K. I wanted to take him to church, but the Mrs. wouldn't let me. That would have been really funny!! It would have scared the rich ladies.

Funny story: we went to the hospital to visit my Grandma. I took Rosemary's baby (Kyler) along. We were waiting to get on an elevator, and as the doors open, I heard a lady scream - she saw his hair.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Whitewater that about sounds like where I went to school here. We often referred to the administration as Nazis. But then again, we were teens. I understand why they have the rules, but sometimes it got over the top.

Graduation was the worst. It was the admin's last chance to excercise complete control over every aspect of your life. We got inspected as we entered practice. Some guy had a 5 o'clock shaddow so they sent him home. The next morning he was shaving in line with an electric razor.

Around here someone with a green mohawk would get a little extra attention.

Posted by: Whitewater

I'm glad to see that some of us have "Hijacked" this post.

He got sent to the principle's office (last day of school) - he's in Kindergarten (talk about ridiculous)! They made a crown for him to wear so he didn't draw attention to himself. And like a crown doesn't draw attention? Hello?

Posted by: confusedbuyer

wow! incredible stupidity. You hit the nail on the head when you said it's an interesting study in human behaviour. Never judge a book by the cover. I always get to know somebody before i try to pass judgement, and even if they rub me the wrong way, I try to "walk a mile in their shoes" so I can at least tolerate them, or understand where they're coming from. Funny, but I find a lot of so-called professionals the most difficult to tolerate because of their hollier-than -thou attitude, and general snobbyness.

my neighbor is a 20 year old Chinese kid. He's recently done the mohawk twice, but way longer spikes than your son. He is THE nicest, hard-working, polite kid you'd ever want to meet.If my kids grow up the same way I'd be proud of them. He laughed at all the razzing we gave him, never got offended. But he finally went with the full head shave (for now) because people were literally freaked out or terrified of him. He got lots of abusive comments too.

Some other clean-cut, nicely groomed puke was just caught scouting our neighborhood on his bike, coming into all our yards, looking in windows, etc. My trailer window is broken and someone tried prying the glass out (same kid i think).

Ya, property has become cost-prohibitive here too. In the mediocre areas of the burbs, a small building lot is $220,000. In the City, a small lot is worth around $650,000. and you remove the 80 year old house. With a new house on it, these places are 1 Mil plus. These are the same neighborhoods that were $10,000. houses in the 50's and were very middle-class, small house on small lot. Acreage is about an hour from the downtown (no traffic), and a 5 acre chunk plus a nice home like your 'hood would be around $750,000. Even after converting this to US $$, it's still pretty expensive. And Whistler (2010 Olympics) UNREAL expensive, and no property left. Couple of Seattle .com billionaires have $10Mil homes up there, still no acreage but incredible homes.

Posted by: Whitewater

I try not to judge either. I don't judge you, and you even have a bag over your head.BR>
Yeah, we had the 2002 olympics here and prices shot up. Soldier Hollow (nordic skiing, etc.) was in my home town and then other venues, luge, bobsled, ski-jumping, moguls, free-style, etc. was only about 10-15 miles away.

I went to Vancouver a couple of years on business (nice place).

Posted by: confusedbuyer

have the prices corrected? we go through these cycles quite a bit actually, maybe every 5 years. Ya, it really is a beautiful city, but it only got this green from lotsa rain. everything possible here to do though, mountains, ocean, you name it, we've got it. Except ya gotta travel an hour to find good quadding trails!!BR>
the bag seemed appropriate for "confused buyer"...., but nobody reads my signature. by all rights, I should be canucklehead but someone who never, ever posts already has that tag. Then i could use a Vancouver Canucks hockey team logo and you'd see my true colors!

Posted by: Just4Kicks

I drove up to Vancouver just a few months ago from Seattle on business. Man, it sure is purdy up there. Next time I go it will be for a fishing trip, not sure when that will be though. I was also surprised to find out that you have the same traffic problems we tend to have down here...I guess I didn't expect that.

I chose the bag head because I'm just too stupid to shrink a picture small enough to use as my icon.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

there are so many remote fishing lakes here it's incredible. lots need an atv to get there, lots don't. if it's ocean fishing, there are a couple of spectacular fishing lodges in the Queen Charlotte Islands (part of our province) near the southern tip of the Alaska panhandle (that's the part of Canada you guys stole from us, but we'll do the history lesson another day ). On the radio yesterday, some guy's kid caught a 48lb Chinook salmon using dad's old crappy rod (compared to dad's new rod i guess). over 40lbs is rare, but 20-30 is very common for a Chinook.

well, either I'll call you next time we head down to Old Woman Springs Rd or Joshua Tree, or Pioneer Town,or you can call me next time you're here.

ya, our traffic nightmares are because of a few rivers, so the crossings are always the bottleneck. Plus the city was designed with the foresight it wouldn't reach 500,000, but now we're over 2 million in the lower mainland, and growing rapidly. Add to that many of our drivers have never driven in Norht America before, and it equals chaos.

Posted by: rescuediver

Looks like you guys did take over the topicIt's nice to read a real dialogue going between adults.
Whitewater, nice pics, that is a load to pull down the road.
I also just put new pictures up. They have the rig and family at our latest outing this last weekend. Lt. Dan

Posted by: confusedbuyer

oops, sorry.

great pics. looks HOT and dry. we have an area sorta like that (in the summer), Kamloops, but more hills. really dry and dusty though, and almost unlimited riding area. Some of the hill climbs are mean/tough for expert riders (not me!).

back to trucks, I haul pretty much the same load on my deck.... Kodiak 450, Yamaha 200, LT160 and a Raptor 80, plus an XR70 dirtbike and then the travel trailer. The F250 without duallys would be overloaded, but if you added air helpers, or, extra leafs, that'd help. I just hate having to take 2 vehicles to go somewhere for one family.

I think when it's time to sell this deck I'm gonna post it here, cuz it looks like a lot of you guys would really benefit from this set-up, and i never see them in the US with aluminum, same size, etc..

Posted by: rescuediver

Thanks, Yea, I hate taking two vehicles when we go, can't wait to get the toy trailer, Unfortunately other priorities right now. So, two vehicles it is. I think about putting air bags on the truck. I have a friend who did and he overloaded his trailer, now it has a bent frame. I should take a picture and post it. It does help, but it doesn't increase your gvw thoughhich he tried to do.

It can and does get hot and dry. It was about 90 that day with a nice cool breeze though, otherwise it would of been a short day out.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

yah, yer bang on about the air bags. They just seem to level the load and make the ride a little smoother (from what everyone tells me..don't know from experience). A mechanic told me ya really gotta add leaves to the suspension to carry more weight, but that will only go so far... it doesn't make the axles stronger, or the brakes bigger, etc.. Most people don't want overloads or an extra leaf cuz the ride is that much stiffer when empty ( I can attest to the stiffer ride).

You were told right, it does make a big difference on how the ride is smoother and level. No more high beams being flashed at you. And springs is the beter way to go but, like you said, everything else is still the same, sooner or later, something will give.

Posted by: Whitewater

Rescue, it looks like you have quite the crew. Got to hate the dust.

It's a pity we aren't all independantly wealthy and can't just go out and pick up a toy hauler. I would really like to only pull one trailer, but I don't see any changes in the near future. However, I really want to do some stuff to my truck (oh yeah, that's what this threat was about - trucks). I guess my wants are bigger than my wallet.

Confused, where's the pics?

Just4kicks, I've seen your ugly mug and a bag is very fitting for you. Just kidding - don't get mad...gees....

What happened to MrTommy?

Posted by: Just4Kicks

LOL! Yep, it's just a good thing my kids got thier "looks" from thier mom. I'm Italian-Irish...not the best mix.

confusedbuyer, anytime you're down in the area give me a PM and we'll ride.

rescuediver, nice pics you added, looks like some good times. I really like the wheels on your truck too.

I've got a 2001 F-350 dually with a diesel (not stock). I use it to pull all my toys. I wouldn't trade it for anything, I love it. Check my pics out.

Too bad we are not rich like, Toyking, 2004YFZ450, mudisnjustforboys, Russ7R (by the way, nice arsenal - planning on joining the Montana Militia?), and just4fun.BR>

Dust isn't THAT bad. I'd rather take our dry, dusty heat, than the humidity of some places.

Independantly wealthy would be a nice thing too. Though it can get you in trouble. A friend went and bought a 38' 5th wheel toy box. Now he's doggin hills and over weight. Gonna laugh next time when the little pickup blows by a full-size truck pullin a huge toy box. Shoulda bought the diesel (hey, back on topic.) Guess there are some advantages to not having the money to buy the finer things in life.

I have a 1992 four door Ford with the 7.3 but i also installed an ATS turbo system. I pull a 26 foot flat bed trailer goose neck. I can put 9 fourwheelers and gear on it and it never quits. But i have a 5 speed, I recomend the same.

Posted by: rescuediver

Whitewater, Thanks. The dust isn't to bad especially when your wearing all the gear. The only part I don't like is when riders show no courtesy and just blast past where you set up your camp area without slowing down or decide to do 360's 50 feet up wind from you. That sets me offBR>And I hear you on the wants being bigger then the walletBR>
Just4kicks, Thanks, they perform good tooBR>
BlackandRed, How you doing? We have been looking at buying around 40 acres in the Don Pedro/LaGrange area. That way we have our own little piece of land and a place to camp locally too.

Farboy, Welcome aboard

I'm doing pretty good. Haven't ridden in a couple weeks now. Busy with other stuff. Should be back on the bike next weekend up above Oakhurst. Passing on Hollister this weekend for a get together with some people from high school. One of those once a year things that happens.

Heat hasn't been too bad down here really. Pushing the low-mid 90s or so. With the breeze it's pretty bearable...especially at my desk with the A/C on. BR>
I know a guy who's got some land up around Greelley Hill. Ride up in the forest above that. Nice riding, though dusty.

Posted by: rescuediver

BlackandRed, glad to hear your doing good. It's been nice up here too. Nice delta breeze the last few daysYea, Greeley Hills is one place I will look at, it is closer to the Nat'l forests. But, land I've seen so far is quite expensive atleast for more then a couple acres.

fatboy, how'd you get it to post 4 times (I realize it was an accident). sometimes when i post it won't register, gives me an error page, and then won't let me re-post it, EVER! VERY FRUSTRATING!!

whitewater, I don't know how to post the pics. I emailed mine to our administrator at www.quads.ca and he posted them on that forum for me. There's only a few of my truck/deck/quads. You saw those already didn't ya?if you look close, I've added at least $10,000 in extras and accessories to truck. well, i didn't, dealer did most of them to dress it up a little and I just bought it that way (I think cuz white is a little plain and they needed to dress it up). white is usually at the bottom of my list of vehicle color choices, but this one looked okay with all the stainless added on, plus visor, bug guard and window vents all painted to match. Lighted grab handles also helped.

rescuediver, I HATE a$$holes that dust you out. we have a group of 70-100 (mostly my wife's family), that get together every year in Kamloops (our dusty area). It's really cool, we all camp out together..... no charge except we bring in portable toilets and have them pumped, which costs us about $15 per family. you'd be astounded some of the RVs we get into camp. the road is walking speed and rutty and rough in areas. If it rains, the silt turns to loon-snot. I'll really try to scan and post some pics of that area, cuz kids never had more fun, better than Xmas for them. Anyways, we block a couple of the hills with our toy trailers, and try to keep people outta our camp. You'd be surprised how many still blast by and dust up the area. They only get a couple of chances though, cuz then they're confronted by a large group of burly, redneck loggers and then they usually clue in.

Nonetheless, you have to be pretty stupid and ignorant to dust out people. I think it's an atving courtesy not to do that to anyone... hikers, tree huggers, horse riders, etc.., ya just don't do that. And how stupid can you be when there are 70-100 people camped out?? These are the exact same morons that do every inconsiderate thing to ruin the sport for the rest of us... garbage, vandalism, enviromental damage, etc..

ditto just4kicks, or any of ya for that matter. If you're planning a trip to the Great White North, PM me and we'll take ya out riding. The local chat group, www.quads.ca has a ride guide describing various rides/trails/places throughout the province. OR, post on the forum, and the group is super helpful and friendly.

Confusedbuyer, I know, one of the things I hate is going out on a day off with the family, trying to forget the job. Then, some sh!thead decides to be stupid around me. I can only hold back for so long, before I put my hat back on and straighten the a$$hole out. The wife usually does not tell me things if I am gone, unless she wants me to handle it. I get torqued when people get stupid, especially around my family.

Now that's a group of people, kudos to you for putting up with that many in-lawsnd that loon-snot, don't know if I want to get around itSounds nasty.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

think of 2"-3" of dry, silty, fine, fine dirty dust suddenly getting wet= loon-snot. Actually, we all call it loon $hit, but I didn't think I could get that to post. Thanks for the trick! It's only hard to drive vehicles+trailers on, it's really quite fun for the quads.

Glad to hear you confront these morons. Hope it never backfires on ya. I'll usually politely ask/point out what's happening. You either get a sincere "gees, sorry, i never realized or thought about it" ,OR, you get a mouthy attitude. I then survey whether I'll get swarmed by a buncha punks, or whether i should just SNAP. sometimes the snap just happens, cuz it takes a lot to get me there in the first place. All in all, it's really rare and hasn't happened riding, as much as in day to day neighborhood activities. Like I said, on the times it's happened riding, there were so many of us, the mere presence was enough to stop the stupidity (which makes you wonder if they didn't know better in the first place).

oh yeah trucks... Anyone who owns a Powerstroke tried a Duramax? What did ya think?

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Yeah it has been nice rescue. Some of that breeze has been making its way down here. Highs were supposed to be mid 90s, but it feels like the 80s.

My brother has been working up in Tracy and said it's been very windy. Foreman call the office from the job site and we can't even hear them over the wind noise. Maybe it'll blow some of the crap out of the area. I know, wishfull thinking.

I've got away with it so farBR>
I know of a couple who bought the first year they were out and had transmission problems. GMC did take care of the problems. Other then that, they love them.

I try not to confront people unless I have to, then I am ready for what ever is thrown at me. I don't have a problem confronting people and if need be, I call for back up. I just try not to get nasty when the family is around. But, if I have to, it wouldn't be new to themBR>
BlackandRed, I can imagine how it is around Tracy, that's about 25 mile away and the wind here is about half. We could only hope it can clear all the crap in the air

Sorry guys, I've been off working. I came home last night and was too tired to check email. Then when I did this morning, here's a zillion emails saying this thread has 'new' stuff. You guys have been busy!

I checked out the new pictures, the Mohawk (cute!), followed the thread, and finally got caught up. And now it's off to work again. But, I'll be home Sunday afternoon and will be off for two full days so I'll be able to spend some time reading and writing. I agree with whoever said "It's too bad we aren't independantly wealthy".

Oh, and the real estate discussion was interesting. It's the same thing here in Carson City, NV. Bought our place for $80k fifteen years ago and I couldn't buy it NOW if I wanted to. So come retirement time, we're clearing out.

See ya in a couple days.

Just got back from camping, and have to say, I love my Ford Truck (that is what this 3-month thread is all about). However, it must have been family reunion time on the mountain, cuz all these idiots that don't know how to ride a 4-wheeler were sure everywhere tearing things up - up and down the road, up and down the road. It's kind of funny to see someone try to haul a$$ in first gear - damn city folk.BR>
I posted some pics of my trip - some pics of Mrs. Whitewater, too. I think she's kind of perdy - I'm kind of sweet on her.

you're a lucky man. so that's 10,000 feet in Utah? WOW, very nice and green. here I thought everything in Utah was like an arid, barren wasteland like Moab and the river canyons from your other photos, and the salt flats where they break the speed records. NOT SO!!

I love the big open, private camp spot you got there. that's the only way to go. Private or public land? If it's public, where's everyone else? you post a 'Quarantineed" sign somewhere?

Oh, and you're not serious about trying to climb that steep, loose rock are ya? remind me not to go with ya if you went all the way up that. it looks steep and mean with nowhere to bail if you hit trouble, or nowhere to turn around if you get up top. Mrs. W must be an RN or GP to keep you patched up.

Posted by: Whitewater

My camp was at about 9000', but we climbed above 10,000' on the 4-wheelers. It's interesting how people get in thier mind what something looks like (i.e., everything east of the Rocky Mountains is as flat as Kansas - poor bastards). Utah is very diverse.

Oh yeah, Mrs. W. was ready to call in Life Flight to rescue my sorry a$$. Seriously, that was just a photo op.

About your truck, I like white. I'll trade you black for white. Tip to all: Never buy a black truck!! It only stays clean for about 90 seconds.

My camping pet peve: When you find a camping spot (by yourself), and someone insists on camping right next to you. You might as well go to a campground / RV park or just stay home.

Posted by: MrTommy

I hear you on the white issue. Everyone has to have at least one black vehicle - to learn. I bought a brandy new 69 Dodge Super Bee (ahem, hold the age wise cracks - ha), and it was "black ON black, IN black" - no air. Man, what an oven in the summer (and those were hot, humid summers back in Chicago where I grew up), and like Whitewater said, it's only clean for about 90 seconds. It's beautiful when it IS clean, but you better take pictures quick.

Now you'll notice, our truck is white, our trailer is white, and we always wear long sleeved white T-shirts when we ride. Besides being cooler temperature wise, stuff can get a lot dirtier before anyone notices. And that's a GOOD thing because I've lost my zeal for car washing.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Whitewater: but for those 90seconds they are the most beautiful things on the planet. I'd love a black F-350 dressed up with some chrome and diamond plate accessories. But not overboard. White's kinda plain, but it can look nice dressed up as well. But black is nicer.

Posted by: Whitewater

69 Dodge Super Bee? Gees Mister, you sure are old.BR>
And yes, black is not the best color. I would like to paint it the color of the my wife's Lexus (pearl), but that would cost me a fortune. I think I'll stick with black and stock until I can afford a new truck.

Posted by: Whitewater

Tommy,

Couldn't help but notice, but do you have to help your wife up on her ATV? She a tiny gal aint she.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

I think you should change the handle from whitewater to artful dodger, cuz you artfully dodged my Q about how you got such a nice beautiful, private camp spot!! that's okay, I wouldn't want to give away that location either, for fear of someone else being parked there the next time you show up. at 9000 feet musta been cold at night. that's a heck of an elevation.

blame the state for the stereotype. they always promote the desert look, the big rock structures that were the featured backdrop in the bugs bunny road runner show, and the Brigham Young/mormon thing. but there's much more than that....

I just got a PM from racingisntjust4boys. She wants me to clear the record. mudisntjust4boys is her sister, and she insists they're not posers, and they both own all of the toys they described. she's 18, and I think really lucky to have all that stuff and experience on them, at such a young age.

And apparently I called her an old man... last time I take a bullet for you whitewater . I thought I was the one hoping and wishing they really existed and was calling them every man's dream girls. guess not. I did reply and mentioned I was only making an observation and asking a fair question, which they were welcome to answer.

But wouldn't you guys all rather hear this from racingisntjust4boys, or mudisntjust4boys, rather than from me??

Posted by: MrTommy

You're catching on fast, confused. We'd MUCH rather hear from hot babes than you.BR>
Whitewater, wifey gets on her ATV just fine, although I have to talk her into following me sometimes. She doesn't know her own capabilities. But she's getting better. She sure is fun to have around thought, and that's the important thing.

I think she's 5'4" or so. Isn't that about the average for women? I don't know.

We actually used the truck for hauling today - GASP!!! We had to pick up two 3,000 lb pallets of 'keystones' for a project in front of the house. Only it took two trips. That nifty but hefty utility bed on my truck weighs in at (I'm guessing because I bought it pre-loved) about 3,000 all by itself. I may swap that out someday. But it sure is great for RV'ing. Everything we need is in those side compartments.

Rescue, if I was going to 'invest' in two pallets of beer, I would probably be getting something OTHER than Keystone... Keystone doesn't come in bottles does it? I GOTTA have bottles.

Don't take it too hard, Confused. It's the "law of the jungle".

Posted by: rescuediver

Whitewater, Nice camping pictures and sceneryI like white trucks, you can drive them up against brush and the scratches don't show as bad as a dark color. Someday, I'd like to add metallic gray to the bottom 1/4 of my truck to give it two tone.

Tommy, when you mentioned "picking up 2, 3,000 lb pallets of keystones" for an instant there, I thought you were referring to the beerBut, that's another threadLOL

It doesn't shift into 1st when you do this, you're better off leaving it in drive. PLUS, I shoulda been in 4-low. I did same drive this year in 4-low and it purred into camp. BUT, if you pull, you should consider best tranny cooler, which I've done since, and frequent tranny fluid changes. I pull a lot of heavy loads.

Okay, I'm a little slow - I ride the short bus and it takes me a while to comprehend a post that was made in April. You blew your tranny? I wonder sometimes what to shift into. I pull a 10% grade a lot and just take it out of overdrive. Is that the right thing to do?

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Whitewater: what he was saying was that he was running an automatic, and pulled it down to 2. He was probably thinking this would tell the tranny to run in 1st & 2nd as needed. But it will hold 2nd gear. Like putting a manual tranny in 2nd. It didn't go down to 1st gear when it needed to (going to slow for 2nd) and started lugging it. Like leaving it in OD when climbing a steep hill. It just burnt the tranny up.

When trailering you really need a tach and a tranny temp gauge. The tach is so you can get in the powerband of the motor when climbing and a tranny temp gauge to keep an eye on it so you don't burn things up. Of course an auxillary tranny cooler is a good idea too.

And yes, taking it out of OD is the right thing to do on hills. Saves the OD clutches. I've had them go out on me. Lost OD but was still able to put another...ohhh 200 plus miles on my trip. The rest of it held together. Little did I know the torque converter had stopped locking up a while before that. 10% is pretty much insane. Not sure of anything close to that hear. I've been on some 9%, but it was pretty short.

Posted by: Whitewater

BlackandRed,

I wish Ford would have put in a tranny temp gauge in the 2000 F-250's. I have a tranny cooler, but need to get a temp gauge. The 10% grade is probably a 2 mile stretch, but I pull an 8% grade on and off for 5 miles or so. The next time I go there, I'll take a picture of the grade sign.

What do you drive?

Posted by: confusedbuyer

whitewater, "you're a lucky man" comment was a combination of beautiful wife, nice family and lots of toys. AND, she was willing to pose seductiviley on your ATV. NO FAIR! surprised you were able to get that shot away without your animal instincts kicking in first. yep, "lucky" had nothing to do with camp spot. we get the paper plate trails too, or flagging ribbon (cuz here in the magnificent forests of British Columbia, we're all lumberjacks... you know the Monty Python song,"I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay"....?). How close would the nearset camper come and park next to ya? I remember you mentioned that as a pet peeve somewhere, either a post or your profile. Even when we go to remote, ugly to reach, bumpy-walking speed driving areas, you always end up with some recently paroled guys and a stack of beer boxes to go with their boom boxes and all night party, parked within 100 feet. And don't forget, we don't have 'the right to bear arms'!!

kinda funny I got the PM when you're the one exploiting the cute kids pictures as a potential chick-magnet!!(LOL) img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> . just kidding, I'll post some pics somehow, then you can abuse me. Now if the last grenade you launched about 'girls can't ride' doesn't generate a reply, then I'm gonna get suspicious!! Not to worry though, if it does generate a reply, I'll probably be your shield again and catch the wrath. I think I may need to change my handle to Trojan if this protection keeps up. BR>
okay, now the truck issue. we were on one of those rough, rutty, rocky goat trails for the annual Kamloops ride. It's just too rough to go more than walking speed=4 low. We had 4 quads on truck, box full of stuff, and 30' travel trailer in tow. it was too hard on 2nd gear, plus no automatic downshift from 2nd to 1st= blown tranny.

Now on the highway, if you're outta O/D, it will EVENTUALY downshift to 2nd if you have accelerator pedal floored. but if you've got it floored and you're barely holding and you don't feel power or pressure increase (i.e, lost that grunt), you're really working the tranny hard. Problem is the engine has the power but tranny can't take it. You'd be better off down shifting from D to 2nd if you feel you've lost the grunt. NOW bear in mind, there's probably a certain speed/rpm you max out at before you UPshift from 2nd to drive. That should be the same speed you DOWNshift at so you don't redline engine. For example, I have 4:10 gears with a dually crewcab and a mild (60 HP) powerchip. I find my truck shifts from 2nd to 3rd around 40MPH (max). When I pull super steep highway hill LOADED, I can hold 50MPH out of O/D (that's probably 3rd gear I guess). But it's just killing my tranny to do it. It really is better to shift down to 2nd at this point (after slowing to 40 MPH) and just let the engine and tranny pull me up the hill at 40. I may get passed by a Cummins with 1/4 of my load/weight, or a Duramax with my same load, but who cares? The object is for all of us to make it to the top, not blow up on the way. We get so used to the speed issue, we forget that our demand on the truck is sometimes too much. And i can giggle knowing they're bagging their equipment. The big run at the hill and then powering out halfway is also hard on tranny. Nothing wrong with the big run, it's working it too hard on the way up and downshifting too late.

Oh, BTW, leaving it in 2nd to pull highway the way I described isn't going to blow tranny the way i did mine. I was in 4-low territory and overworked it in 2nd gear. It would be the same at highway speed as leaving it in O/D on that 10% grade you described.

DON"T cheap out and neglect your tranny fluid and filter change, and pay $200 for the top of the line tranny cooler (installed). I put one on my '79 Ford 460 gas myself and it wasn't hard, but on the Powerstroke, there are 3-4 layers of coolers: the rad, the air cond condenser, power steering fluid cooler (yep, there's one of those, lotsa guys mistake it for tranny cooler), and there's a lighter duty tranny cooler. so you're fighting for good location a little. That's why i let Ford do it for me for $250 installed (Cdn= $200 US).

Sorry this is a little long, but i first had to hack on ya, and then get to the point. This is the way my cousins who have operated logging trucks and every other piece of motorized machinery in the steep north, explained it to me. And they've forgotten more than I'll ever know about driving and operating ANYTHING motorized. When we go riding, they put me to shame on a 2wd old quad compared to my fancy new 4x4. All about experience, and knowing what to do in each situation. Hope this helps.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

it took me awhile to type this while black and red gave you the short answer. B$R, are you talking an exhaust temp. gauge: "pyrometer"? I hear anyone going to the 4" exhaust puts those in. I haven't done the exhaust and gauge cuz it costs huge $$.

Confused, I'm confused? You get a PM and I don't? What the hell? You have a bag over your head and I'm sporting a green mohawk?.?.? I guess they were mad at you because you called them an old man.BR>
Oh, and the camp spot; I didn't know if you were saying I was lucky because of my wife, the elevation I was at, etc. Anyway, it's on public land (National Forest). It's pretty much first come, first serve. I've camped in that spot before and wanted to try some other place, but the mountain was kind of busy (you know when it's busy when there are paper plate signs everywhere, giving directions - or is that just a Utah thing?).

Tommy, I just noticed your wife was a petite gal (quite pretty by the way). It's nice when your wife wants to go hang out on the trail with you. Usually, I just take my boys with me. My eleven year old is quite the ATVer - he's a good rider on such a big machine. He has pretty good judgement for a kid. My little one is getting good too. I think he's better than my daughter - that's because girls don't know how to ride. Okay, did that stike a nerve with the 18 year old rider chicks?

Lt. Dan, thanks for the comments. It's nice to have a few of us get to know each other better. By the way, nice truck!!

Does anyone else want to play?

You crack me up. I'm sitting here at my desk laughing and my parnter in crime (office buddy / employee), is looking at me weird. Oh well, he does the same thing, except his forum is all about Ramchargers (what a Dodge nerd he is).

Yeah, I threw a grenade, but no one wants to play. My wife would be proud of me.BR>
Camping: usually, the nearest camper is about 500 meters away or further, but there are mostly trees or a ridge in the way (so I don't have to see them). However, every once in a while, I get the idot (AND YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE), camping within rock throwing distance (which I do when someone camps next to me). I'm just not a RV park kind of guy. I like to get out and not see a soul (unless she's neked).BR>
Thanks for the truck talk (that is what this thread is all about, isn't it?).

Going to do the mutliple replies in one.

Whitewater, I'm just a little guy. '91 GMC Sonoma Long bed with a 4.3L V6 (nice motor I have to say, motor #2. #1 lasted until the Boss bought it back from his daughter and the wife blew it driving home...they need this brown stuff called oil @ ~136K. I got it after that.), 700R4 auto (GARBAGE from what I've been told. It's on #3. #1 0-120K, #2 120-180K. #3 has ohh...4K I think on it. Replaced after Pres. Day.) Company has sunk $3K into it since the beginning of the year. Started off with brakes all around (front rotors), new tires (huge difference on the sand @ Pismo, these things actually are soft enough to flex!). Then the tranny let go. O2 sensor had just been replaced and the tranny shop picked up a rich condition. Back to the shop. New O2 sensor, plus intake manifold gasket was sucking air (real good job on the engine builder!) The garage noticed the CAT was running too hot on the opposite side. So to the muffler shop for new CAT and the muffler looked like someone took a torch to the front of it. So it's been a money pit this year. So it's almost new. Needs new seat covering. It's trashed. 180K miles that kinda happens. I wish it had a tach and tranny temp gauge. It also has a small radiator leak (at the tranny cooler inlet). So it doesn't overheat, but the boss will tweak out when I tell him. So I just watch it. Though I wish it had a little taller tire (they are like 215/70R15 or something like that. Sport package.) as well as something like an ARB Air Locker for the rear end.

I've just picked up a lot from friends, around here and a Ford diesel tech forum.

Confused: I was talking about a transmission temp. gauge. My friend's '03 F-350 has one stock. Upper right small gauge. I think EGT is usually only an issue with diesel. Never heard of anyone with a gas motor bothering with one. Usually they put them in those 3-4 gauge pods on the front A-pillar of the trucks. I *think* when the EGT gets really hot the motors are starting to run lean. I know this is what happens with aircraft as my boss is a pilot. Flown with him a couple times. Cool to think about being able to change your mixture mid flight. The one time he did that was on a flight from Ontario, Calif. to Fresno, CA (where we are based.) Richen up the mix to cool the EGT (and motor) down, but not too low so you don't use too much fuel.

I'm not much into modding motors. You're just putting some much more stress on everything. Just buy a bigger truck. Though I'm pretty sure today motors can take more then what they put out factory. These diesels are built with 300K mile lifespans at least.

And at least I'm not the only one who comes here during "work" hours.

whitewater, thanks for stating that distance in metric (500 meters), since you confused everyone, that's about 1/3 of a mile. Oh, and my father in-law, a die hard Chev guy always says about Dodge: "The name says it all, DODGE it". Funny though, all our logger relatives up north swear by the Cummins with a standard tranny only. I think cuz they've had good luck with that engine in their skidders, grapple yarders, etc..

rescue, what's the "Banks Trans Command" all about?? I found my chip re-programmed my shifting to be much smoother. I was told with the 4" exhaust you should really add the pyrometer cuz you can really start to heat things up. It was explained to me, but I'm not sure i understand since you're pushing exhaust through a bigger outlet, I thought that would make it run cooler.

ya, my diesel mech. buddy says by the time your temp gauge shows hot, it's already too late. mine never moves from normal operating temp, no matter what I pull. he calls it an idiot gauge too.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Rescue: The shop that does our fluid maintenance (oil, radiator, tranny, etc.) recommended that I service at 8K mile intervals to keep it from dieing again. My boss would have an absolute fit if I had it done that often.

Anyone have any opinion on Flush vs. pan/filter drop? The shop recommends a flush (using something like 20 qts. and about $10 more) over a pan drop. One would think you need to change that filter....

Confused, it senses the load you are hauling and provides a better, smoother shift. When it was installed, we were hauling 5,000 lbs 2-3 times a week. Felt it was another way to help extend the transmission.
I know what you are saying about having a bigger exhaust, I think it does make it run cooler. I think, where you need the guages, is when you had 80-100 plus horsepower and then try hauling 10,000 plus lbs at 70 plus mph. Demanding the performance you just paid all that money for. Things start heating up real fast. A friend of mine had just that done, they told him, he needed the guages to monitor everything. He also hauls a weekend warrior weighing in at around 18,000 lbs.

BlackandRed, If I haul my trailers a little more then usual, I will get the fluid changed sooner. I would go bankrupt changing it every 8,000 miles religiously, for me that's about every 2 months or soI think you would want to replace the filter too, that's what is keeping the fluid clean. Unless the argument is; the fluid is breaking down from the heat, and that the filter is not affected by the heat. So, I guess, the heat doesn't break down the fluid enough into a solid to get caught in the filter. Just thins it out? Need an expert to pipe in.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

my Ford diesel mechanic buddy did the fluid only on mine for the first change, and then the next time he changed the filter. A reputable tranny shop I deal with laughs at the fluid exchange saying before this equipment came out, they dumped fluid, sucked what they could outta the lines and replaced filter. There's also a magnet in the bottom of the pan that always gets filings. NOW, when i went to the equipment trade show in Vegas, all the guys selling these fluid transfer machines said the machines do a more complete exchange of fluid, like 80% plus.

for my $$, I agree with the tranny shop: get as much fluid as you can, and change the filter. Oh, and those fluid exchange machines are the most lucrative piece of equipment in a shop. They make big $$ off them, so who's best interests are they serving, your's or their's?

hey black and red, I spoke to the father-in-law tonight, Mr. die-hard Chev guy. he had a '91 GMC Sonoma, 4.3L/auto. He really worked the hec out of that truck. He pulls loads of cardboard or pulp every single day with a utility trailer and truck box full. no electric brakes on the trailer. many loads have been 2000lbs plus weight of trailer (700lbs or more).Loads with the quad and Boler trailer aswell. It's still in the family. it's got 280,000 Kilometres=175,000 miles. NEVER, EVER changed the tranny fluid up to today and it's still running (he was the original owner, and now his other son-in-law drives that truck). Engine is still good and strong, but he was changing oil every 3,000 miles religiously.

Goofy, but he insisted on running straight anti-freeze with no water mixed. I've argued with him over and over that the water is required to make antifreeze work properly, otherwise it will gel. he insists it doesn't matter. Our climate isn't hot or cold enough for me to prove my point. Our lowest temp is just under freezing for a week, and our highest temp is mid 90's for a week or two. Anyways, the rad is perfectly clean and no hoses replaced, nor water pump. I replaced 1 heater core for him. I think the water becomes corrosive and pure antifreeze isn't, but i still say he should pre-mix to 60/40 (more antifreeze).

maybe it's luck of the draw, or the car built on Monday thing... I dunno. not doing any tranny service at that mileage is crazy, especially considering it's spent it's whole life pulling loads. plus we're pretty hilly. yet it's still going good. lucky i guess.

I bought a 4.3L GMC van cuz of the abuse I've seen his veh. go through, but mine's been a coolant nightmare. Dexcool is garbage; definitely change it before the 100,000 miles GM claims it will last. coolant was a brown sludge at 65,000 miles when i first bought it. I've replaced water pump, intake manifold gasket, heater core, and 3 different hoses, all at different times. And I'm excellent about my preventitive maintenance. go figure.

A local diesel shop in Reno got me interested in the Superchips thing, but said I needed to get "the gauges" before I did anything to the computer. His prices seemed a bit 'spensive' so I went to my trusted local guy here in Carson City and HE said "Don't chip the Ford". He's had a lot of trouble with them. Dodges and Chevy's are fine, but something about Fords have given him fits. He gave it a 50/50 success chance.

So, I had him install the gauges because I've been worried about what's going on when I'm towing two trailers and we're going "dry camping", which means taking a lot of added weight in water. I changed the air filter and the fuel filter (which I'd uh, 'forgotten' for quite a while), and was surprised with the performance improvement. The fuel filter made a big difference. I'm ashamed to say how long it may have been since I changed that thing - and I had a spare in the side compartment forever! Anyway, on our first trip with the gauges, I found the tranny barely got to 180, which is, I think, the normal engine temp. The only time I got 'concerned' was on a couple of long, fairly steep pulls when tranny got to 190 and the pyro was up in the yellow area (forget what the temp was), and the boost was up too, of course. One thing we did notice was that when we got out of OD and the turbo was doing its job, the boost gauge started to 'tick'. Wonder what that's about...

Bottom line is, I still haven't done anything to the chip. One thing for sure, I'm not buying anything unless I have the cash on hand. And then I'm still not sure which company to go with. Superchips, Hypertech, or any of the others. Whichever I try (IF I try...), I'm gonna want a 30 day money back guarantee so I can send it back if I'm not 'head over heels' happy with it.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

I went with what's considered a mild chip at 60HP. It's a "Powerchip" brand. My dad works at a Ford dealer and I know the diesel mechanic very well. He said with this chip, gauges weren't necessary (diesel performance shop told me gauges were needed). Isn't the first time performance shop has tried to oversell or gouge me on something. There are also "tuner" chips where you dial in how much horsepower boost you want from 50-110HP. Apparently these ones have caused problems.

I've had NO problems from my chip. It's the best thing I've ever done. Power change was immediately noticeable, takes off like a sports car. Pull the same hills at 10MPH more. Shifting is WAY SMOOTHER. I have a '99, so maybe Ford already did some of their own re-programming to the following years, but mine is fantastic.

In general, Ford has told the dealers to really crack down on warranty claims and the chip. It used to be it was up to Ford to prove the use of the chip caused or contributed to the failure. Now, they just deny any claim where they see a chip. So add it after your warranty is done, cuz it will be a battle and headache if you still have warranty left. And get the mild one, cuz it does sound like the 100HP+ can cause damage.

Posted by: Whitewater

Confusedasusual, what did the Powerchip cost you?

Posted by: confusedbuyer

hey whitewater, it's Trojan to you, or Mr. Trojan.BR>
I got mine at "cost" for $500 Cdn= $350 US, BUT...., that was a few years ago. I've heard they've come down in price a lot since then.

Trojan? Are you ribbed for her pleasure? Sorry if that comment offended anyone.BR>
That's about what I thought ($350 US - damn conversions, when is Canada just going to be the 51st state?).

confused: this thing has been rode hard and put away wet. It's a company truck so it's just been beat on. Two of the previous drivers drive like a bat outta hell. Before me, 2 different employees had it. Then both of the boss's daughters have had it. One has gone through THREE (yes THREE) Thunderbirds in probably 5-7 years. (Granted, they were all piss poor shape when she got them.) Nobody wants to be a passenger when she's driving. Let's hope the Focus she's going to get will last. Poor thing. I feel for it already. It doesn't stand a chance. Yes, the Boss is a Ford Man. I have the only non-Ford we have. I feel safe at 90MPH in the passenger seat of my boss's Lightning. I feel like I'm going to die at 25 with her. The second daughter I guess is ok for driving. Never driven with her. But it was leaking oil seriously when she drove it. Lived up in the SF Bay area somewhere at the time. I'm the ONLY person who has driven it that doesn't smoke. It was a stinky nasty thing when I got it.

As it has been a fleet vehicle I can always go into the folder and find out when most of the maintenance was done. Except for the short time that the daughters were driving it.

Considering it's age and mileage, it's actually a pretty darn good little truck. Been very reliable for me in the almost 5 years I've been driving it. Just happens to be an expensive year for it. Everything is just kind of cycling out on it. It is on it's 2nd or 3rd radiator. It does get pretty hot here in the summer. Max summer temp ever was like 117. But it will regularly top 100 in July and August. Been mild so far with mid 90s this year. But its a "dry heat." Humidity is like max of 20 normally at 4PM.

I do have to say the motor is really nice. I prefer Fords myself, but the 4.3L is no dog. It gets that truck a scootin pretty good. I wouldn't turn a new(er) truck down, but I'm pretty happy. And I don't have to pay for insurance, maintenance, repairs, or daily fuel. Just what fuel I use when I take off to go riding somewhere (I can get 20MPG if I'm heading to like Hollister (mostly flat land driving) and it drops to 18-19 going to Pismo (about 50 miles of hills & curvees). Pretty good deal.

I thought the recommendation of 8K mile intervals was a bit much. But you should see it when I head out for a weekend. I'm gonna weigh it one of these days. I don't think I'm over, but it's close. And that only happens 1x mos, usually. Sometimes only every 2 mos. if funds are low. If anything I'll rotate flush and drop every other time.

Trailers over like 1,000lbs need brakes for the S10/S15/Sonoma per the manual. GMC won't ever tell me it's towing capacity. I couldn't even get a GCWR from them. Song and dance about depending on what equipment is in it. Well, ya idiot, it's what it had at the factory. Give me a GCWR, that won't change!

Posted by: Whitewater

BlackandRed,

Sounds like your transportation situation can't be beat (financially). Of course, your boss could always buy you a new Ford. Are you in the field a lot?

MrTommy,

How did the Keystone project go?

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Field? What's that? Yeah, sometimes I am. I'm technically a draftsman. So, the truck is a huge bennie. Never heard of a draftsman having a company truck. I go out on occasion. I work for an electrical contractor and sometimes they need an extra body here or there. Wire pulling, that kind of thing. Usually I'm out when I'm called to deliver stuff; parts, equipment, trucks. On occasion we use SquareD Powerlink power panels and I get called on to program them as I'm the Computer Czar as the office manager calls me. Course it doesn't take much to plug in a laptop and upload the program. Now, if I can only get the electricians to install the control wiring CORRECTLY!

The Office Manager keeps telling him to buy me a new truck and give his daughter the truck I drive. It'd be dead within a year. Breathing room would be nice. All the trucks we have are F-150 4.6L standard cab long beds. They run about $22-25K, and the car his daughter wants is like $15K. Do the math....

If I could only convince him what I REALLY need is an F-350 CC LB SRW 4x4 PSD. That would tweak just about every foreman we have. Ahhhh dreams. I think that's way overkill for what I do.

Our next big truck will be an F-650 (my vote would be a CAT 3126B under the hood 300HP/800 ft lb.) whenever the '94 F-450 gives up the ghost. Hell, a 650 would be cheaper to operate with a diesel than the 460 pig that's in there. Get's like 4-6MPG or something like that.

hey whitewater, I'm too old at 40 to be ribbed for pleasure anymore, now it's "rich" for her pleasure, but i'm not that either, she just spends like we are. my wife has a theory; as long as there are checks in the check book, there must be $$ in the checking account.works for her. and marraige means ribbing only occurs annually.NOW i know why she was smiling at the altar. If only the male species could get the little head to stop doing all the thinking, and making the important decisions! that should offend some too. LOL & sorry.

now that our $$ is worth 70% of yours, my truck has lost value. they were dumping mega Powerstrokes in the US when our $$ was worth half of yours, guys were making $4,000 a truck selling them in the US. the dealers wouldn't sell to wholesalers, so wholesalers would get guys to lease Powerstrokes for 6 months at a time, and pay the lease payments. basically, a new truck for free every 6 months.

Posted by: rescuediver

It's funny when you listen to how people take care of their vehicles and the shape that they stay in. Who would think that vehicles would still be running with no problems with pure antifreeze and not changing the transmission fluid. I know if I did that, it would cost me more in repairs, then just doing the proper maintenance of the vehicle.

BlackandRed, you are lucky with your vehicle arrangement especially with today's fuel prices:Still push for that F350, all they can say is no. Or, worse give you the daughter's old vehicle. Like that hasn't happened beforej/k.

Like confused (or is it Trojan), I have had good luck with my powerchip. The power is there when I need it and it gave me back some of the fuel mileage that was lost with the bigger tires. My brother just put an "edge" program in his truck('02 f250). He definately feels the power and likes it so far. He's pulling his 5th wheel to Lake Tahoe tommorrow for the weekend. We'll see how it does.
I also think that the self programmed power units are the ones that get people in trouble. If that is all that was out there, I definately wouldn't buy one. I'd be afraid I 'd screw something up by changing something I shouldn't have. Lt. Dan

Posted by: confusedbuyer

the pure antifreeze has kept things like new and clean. he's just lucky the extremes of temperature haven't taught him a lesson. the tranny fluid..... if that was me, I'd have blown 2 trannys by now just on account of bad luck. ALTHOUGH, a friend of a friend is some sorta mechanical engineering genius and claims tranny fluid properties are such that it never needs to be changed, and he's never done it and never suffered the consequences. good for him, but I don't subscribe to his line of thinking and I'll keep changing mine.I've seen the pan pulled with the magnet full of filings and the dirty filter and the way darker colored fluid, plus the burnt odor. And i know he doesn't tow anything, he's talking car. wuss!

I use my truck on the road a lot for appointments. depends where I'm going and if I figure i can park it. I am truly embarassed to take it with me in the majority of cases. People conclude you're filthy rich, or clients get green with envy and think you're cheating them. It really peeves me, cuz i basically "mortgaged" the truck by starting with a long lease that made the payments almost affordable, then rolled the buy-out into a bank loan. Me and my pal (actually, the friend of the friend above) both shopped at the same time and saved thousands by choosing better leasing options, and by finding a no b$/volume Ford dealer that didn't waste time trying to grind out a couple extra thousand on the sale. Buddy got a Lightning. I still think I got the better truck. And I really looK after it well.

people only see a $50,000 truck, but they don't realize I don't have a new home in the same subdivision as them, I do EVERYTHING myself including all renos, home repairs, mechanical repairs, maintenance, etc.. . They sit back and whine about how rich you must be, while they go to the dealer for every unnecessary service interval, call in the tradesman to change a light bulb, buy designer clothes, drink lattes at Starburnts,etc..: all at top $$. They assume you must be the same, so if you have a nice truck that they CHOOSE not to have, you're rich and they're hard done by and getting the shaft. I say CHOOSE, cuz we don't do or get a lot of other things, so we made a CHOICE to have a nice truck at the expense of not going on an annual Disneyland vacation or living in a newer home like whitewater img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> , (but in his case, he is loaded LOL.. just kidding). People choose something else, but I'm glad for them when they go to Disneyland or whatever choice they make with their own pile of $$, I'm not envious or jealous at all. I'm elated for their enjoyment.

I'm self-conscious about it and I really don't want to try and show off. Heck, i wish I was rich cuz then I could have the toy collection many others have here, without even thinking about it. What are you gonna do, most people just love to complain and you'll never make them happy, and they can't see past that. People are so incredibly stupid and insulting. If I hear one more time, "Geez, why do you need such a big truck?" (and the words are always dripping with sarcasm), I'm gonna put it in 4-low, drive over their yuppie-mobile in the Starburnts parking lot and say,"they were outta Hummers so this was the next biggest thing i could get", or, "I just like it cuz it's so economical and good for the enviroment, and fun to park downtown in the underground lots". Aaaaarrggghh!!

And it's the same when you tell them you have 5 atvs. 1 was new, 3 were used and I rebuilt 2 of them from junk, and one is a family heirloom. Nobody hears that... now i know what my wife means about my zoning her out...., all i hear is "blah, blah, blah..." Hmmm.

Sorry for the rant, but it was truck AND atv related!!

Posted by: Whitewater

Dear Dazed-n-Confused / Trojan / Gees Mr., you're Rich and old (40?),

Looks like you do have it all. Who cares about a new house (besides meimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">). You have a nice truck, you live in the land of Bob and Doug McKenzie, you have a nice trailer, ATV's to ride, a wife that loves you - wow, it's getting deep now.

Anywho, I have some friends a few houses down the street that just took thier kids to Disneyland for 2-weeks. Holy cow! Two weeks!! I think I would kill my kids after two-weeks. They spent 8K on that vacation!! Is that crazy or what? That's a new Sportsman 700 V-Twin EFI (can ya tell I like Polaris?). I just consider the 8-10 weekends a year of camping as a vacation; my daughter hates it, but if she had her way, we would spend our family vacation at the mall. Boring...

Hey, speaking of the land of Beer, I went and saw RUSH last night. Very Cool!!! I also got to ride in a new F-350 to the concert. It was better than a limo. See, I can stay on topic (I mentioned Polaris and an F-350.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

bob and doug? you know more about Canadian history than most Canadians.Although both of them became big stars in the US (Quislings!!). Actually, Rush did a song with Bob and Doug, "take off to the great white north". I saw Rush in 1980 and again in 1982. I hope they're still big enough to fill a big venue?? Most of the bands I liked from the late 70's play bar type venues now, with a big cover charge. These kids these days want to hear re-mixed disco dance music, hip hop or eecchh, rap! I'd rather listen to nails on a blackboard.

How does this relate to trucks? AN excellent Q! I'm going to record the sound of my diesel revving up and down and then mumble an overdub of swear words and how much I hate or want to kill everything, and call it rap/hip hop hybrid. should make millions. Ha Ha ha.... I will be rich after all!! oh, and how was Canada's best rock band?

I wasn't complaining about MY life (it only sounded like that). I was whining about how other people rub me the wrong way by the way they judge me about owning a nice truck. WOW, this is deep, we've come full circle to the "judging a book by it's cover" thing again! I'm gonna go get a mohawk to go with the Powerstroke.

And the beer, we're all "micro-breweries" now. you guys have the same thing. it's kinda too yuppie for me, all these cream honey wheat Haufenfluesen ales. can i just have a lager beer please?

oh, and if you really knew Canada, you'd have said Happy Birthday, since this is our equivalent to July 4 (Happy early birthday America). take-off eh, ya hoser!

Posted by: Whitewater

Happy Birthday America Jr.BR>
I actually went to Calgary in 86 for the 4th. It was cool. And to answer your question about Canada's Best Band - totally awesome dude!! It was good. The old guys can still wail. I'm into progressive metal music and Rush was the forerunner for most of the bands I like today. Of course, I listen to most everything except, pop, hip-hop, rap, and Neil Diamond.

Speaking of 7.3 Liter Diesel engines, the Canadian band I really like is Head Pins (heard of em?). Oh, and I meant to ask you; what kind of hours are you keeping? Did you just wake up?

Posted by: confusedbuyer

yep, I saw the Headpins in a few bars. chick lead singer -Darby Mills (it's been over 20 years okay)?? Turn it Loud was their big hit, n'est pas? Pretty sure they're from Vancouver, just like Bryan Adams. my stepsister went to school with him. Another good band from Canada is the Tragically Hip, but I don't think they've ever hit it big in the Excited States

Ya, I slept in today. it's a national holiday. but I'm not the one copulating the pooch at work. I'm re-wiring my new/old 18' flat deck equipment trailer. what a moron who did it before me, I wish Mr. Tommy's signature would have cleansed him from the gene pool. Just came in for brunch, so back to the grind. Not sure if I'll keep this as a quad hauler or not. great 8' wide deck, but kinda heavy at 2700lbs empty.

Calgary? that's Cowtown. we had Expo in '86, you shoulda been here.bit more of a diagonal line from Utah, Calgary is more straight north. you musta decided to go north until you hit snow and ended up in Calgary.

Rescue, I like my job too much to tweak my boss that much by asking for a $45-50K truck!

The boss's daughter's old car is toast. Needs a new motor to the tune of $6K on like a '95 Tbird. It went south by first having an injector get stuck open. Flooded out the cylinder (mech. drained 2 quart (yes TWO!) of gas from the oil pan. He gave it a 50-50 chance it would dry out the cylinder (even the cat. was wet). It fouled out a new plug in the cylinder almost immediately. Ended up back at the mech. sucking oil into the cylinder. So it's now sitting in the back of our shop lot. No new car yet...I think he might have had it with her going through cars.

Maybe I can get one of his extras he's got...there's a '99 Lightning (who am I kidding) and a '00 F-150 4x4 (funny man!). Same body style as the Lightning. It's got like a 2" front and 4" rear drop...yes, he dropped a 4x4. But he got it for traction, not wheeling. It wasn't quick enough so in went a super charger and upgrade to the tranny. It does look pretty cool. The a** end was just sitting up WAY too high stock. Looked ugly.

Copulating the Pooch? Too funny. Hey, I get some things done - I Manage things here. We just had a company picnic today (oh goody). My crew and I got to be the stage hands for all this kind of crap (i.e., sound system, chairs, tents, tables, etc.) Oh the joys of being the facility manager.BR>
And yes, I need to re-wire my trailer, too. My bro-inlaw used to own it before me, and I have already put about $300 into it. It was Redneck engineering at it's finest.

I went to Calgary in the marching band (yes, I was in the band - played the trumpet from grade school up through college). Hey, one time at band camp...

Picnic was okay - food was good. We got to hear from the head cheese - he rambled on so long, I finally had to give him the "shut up" gesture. I'm sure blackandred's boss would really like me (head smart a$$).

Rescue, I like country, too. Shania's kind of perdy...

Welcome maggiesboy, I'm new also.

rescue, I'm so unlucky, I'm the only guy i know who could fall into a barrell of titts and come out sucking my thumb! well, maybe you too. I think whitewater would come out with Dolly Parton's pair.

I know I shouldn't be paranoid about truck, but it's all the stupid comments. I'm hoping to make the newsreel, just the way you described.BR>
ya, Shania is pretty sweet, and not too hard on the eyes.... and she's a good singer. I can't believe how she got trashed by some of the old-time country musicians for just cashing in on her looks. I disagree, i think she's talented too. not many artists get airtime on rock and country stations, and she's one of the few.

Terry Clark, she's from Alberta (Calgary i think). I like her too. She seems to be aging a little quicker than Shania, but still a good singer. She's playing Merritt Mountain Music Festival this year.. a 3 day concert/party/drunk done in scorching heat, while everyone parks their RV and camps out. Lots of fun. Can't atv right there, but you're really close to some good riding areas.

Confused, I'd just like to fall in that barrelI saw Shania in concert at Arco in Sacramento, was 10 rows back from the stageShe puts on an awesome show. My "girlfriend" as my daughters call her is Faith Hill though. She just takes my breath away

Posted by: confusedbuyer

Rescuediver .."i'd just like to fall in that barrell"... LMAO!! (sorry, can't figure out that quote thing).

ya, Faith Hill is also gorgeous. funny, i was thinking about her when I posted about Shania. Is her hubby Randy Travis or Travis Tripp? Lucky guy.

hey! whitewater musta got an early start to the long weekend. Ain't management a beautiful thing?!

Okay, now I'm going to go way off of our off topic so far that I'll be back on topic. should maybe even post this as a new topic, but I'm having too much fun chewing the fat with you guys.I got drunk at whitewater's company picnic (I brought Canadian beer and now I have this drip and itch... no, that's not it! Seriously, we're at a hauling crossroad. My 16 y/o daughter just moved in with us. Now we have 5 quads to haul, plus 1-2 dirtbikes, plus bicycles (sometimes). I could squeeze 4 atvs on the ATV deck (you've seen it in my photos), plus a small dirtbike, and maybe bicylces tied on. Then we pulled a 30' travel trailer. But there's no way I can squeeze on a fifth quad.

So now we're thinking of going to a flatdeck or enclosed trailer and an 11' Camper. Pros and cons to both. There's so much more room in the trailer and it's nice to drop trailer and then take off in truck for a day trip or to go somewhere. But how will I haul extra quad? I don't think a rack off rear bumper of trailer would cut it. And we can't pull A-train like you guys.

Camper with quad trailer would mean 2 people in tent. Camper is nicer for day trips to limited access areas where I can't manouever trailer. Camper is a little lower maintenace (no tires or wheel bearings). Camper set-up would be lighter. Dropping camper off truck and leaving it at camp spot makes my wife nervous when we're in it. She always thinks we'll tilt it. Loading camper= bigger pain.

It bugs me how close close in price they are. I can get a 1990 11' Lance Camper for $8000. My 1990 Prowler Lynx trailer has way more room and size and features and it would be hard to get $12,000 ($10,000. would be very possible). These are Cdn $$.

It's really hard to give up that trailer room. Once you've had it, going back to camper seems claustraphobic. But I'm really working the truck hard under current set-up. Ohhh, what to do??

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Faith Hill is married to Tim McGraw (lucky bas....)
Shania Twain is married to Mutt Lang (yes, his name is Mutt). I'm not sure, but I think he's a drummer for Motley Crew. He's had a lot of influence over her career in case you wonder why she's so different than other country stars. BR>
Have you tried one quad in the back of the truck?

Posted by: confusedbuyer

Mutt's his nickname, Jeff is his real name. He's a producer from Vancouver, but now they both live in Switzerland. They like it that way cuz it's one of the few places in the world where they have some anonymity. Although I heard something about them splitting up over the past year. But hey, I'm not a STALKER. He used to produce/promote a couple of rock bands locally, and then you could say he hit it BIG!! I vaguely recall he may have been part of a smaller band at one time, like Aldo Nova (I don't think it was them, but someone like them, from that era). Doesn't matter cuz he's way more famous for being married to Shania.

Tim McGraw... that's it! I couldn't come up with his name for the life of me... but I knew it was another country star.

Okay, back to the topic. I can't go under the quad deck, as it has a frame built under it that slides inside the box. It may look like it rides on my frame rails in my pics, but with that weight, it would be too unstable and collapse the side rails. There's an actual sub-frame under the deck, complete with several gussetts welded in for rigidity. I still have about 2' of height to play with, so maybe if I disassembled and then re-assembled one of the quads.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

You sound like you know more about Mutt...I've only heard my brother talk about him...and it always has something to do with Shania.

My bad...I forgot you had a deck. I get people confused around here as to who has what.

Whitewater, Your welcome and thanks. I'll let the ladies ride you about saying "girls don't know haow to ride"I have three and if I was to say something like that, I would definately hear about it.

About trucks, I have learned that you should change the transmission fluid about every 15,000 miles or so, especially if you do a lot of towing. I have a 60 hp chip in my truck, Banks trans command and 4 inch stainless exhaust. It doesn't have the guages on the A frame. I haven't noticed a increase in the transmission temp (I know it's a idiot guage") If I was to go to a more "hp" chip and/or a larger load going to Pismo over Cuesta Grade bi-monthly, then I would invest in the guages. As it is now, change transmission fluid every 15 k or so. Lt.Dan

Anyways, back to the topic; ATV's and Trucks. Confused, What size is the 5th quad you want to haul? Let me tell you where there is a will, there's a way. I have a rack similiar to yours, when I built it, I seriously thought of making it high enough to slide our 70 under. Well I didn't and wish I had. Now, if I want to load it below the deck, I need to take the wheels off and it will fit. Another way, is to build a rack on the back of your trailer, I also did that. I can fit the 70 on it and the Honda 5000 generator. Weight is about 375#s, not including the rack. Mounted it to the trailer frame with 3 grade A bolts on each side, been there for 3 years, never had a problem. I do check them (they are marked) just in case they move/loosen. The trailer tongue still falls about 12% of the trailer weightThird way is probably the best, you will need to build a rack that goes over the cab. That way, you can put all the atvs on the truck, put a bike rack on the back of the trailer for the bikes.
There is a guy I saw at Pismo, he lives around Fresno/Hanford. Maybe BlackandRed knows him? He has a chevy 2500 crew cab, pulls a 5th wheel. He built a rack that goes above his truck. Looks great, weighs a ton though, but he!!, you have a 1 ton dually. Even betterI might still have a picture I took of it. I still think about building one too. He can even take it apart. Bad part is, he uses a fork lift to load it on the truck. Like any good back yard engineer, he built it so, it will handle the task at hand, no question about that. It's toughimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I don't know anything with any trick setups from around here. Only one's I've ever seen loaded on racks have been the regular bed racks that aren't all that uncommon. Only thing from somewhere around this way (I think, I seen him filling up in Kettleman City) that wasn't common was a guy haulling doubles.

BTW, Happy Birthday America!

BlackandRed, If you saw this rig, I think you would remember it. I'll try and find the pictures and post them. Doubles are becoming more common. Seems each time we go to Pismo, we see another double there.

Confused, the pictures are on my wife's lap top and that is with her at work. I need to go to Sacramento tomorrow, depending on when I get home, I will try to post. Lt. Dan

Jeez, I go to work for a couple days, enjoy a couple holiday days and... the "7.3 Diesel" discussion adds a page and a half of stuff, and the topics expand to music, kids, and everything inbetween. BR>
Hey whitewater, the keystone project went well, 'cept my hands were clenched when I woke up the next morning.

So yesterday we decided to go for a quick ATV ride, where we only have to drive about four miles to drop-off point. But, it's all uphill. This is the first time I've gone to this place since I had the guages installed. All I'm pulling is our dinky ATV trailer with the two Cats on it. And that utility box on the pick-up weighs in at (I'm guessing) almost 3K by itself. About halfway up I'm looking at the tranny guage and it's up around 200 degrees. Going down the road pulling two trailers, it wasn't that high. And since this road is nothing but ruts, rocks, and exposed bedrock, we're just crawling up. What I got from this is, tranny stays nice and cool if you're hauling along at highway speeds and wind can pass through the cooler. BUT, if you're just crawling along with virtually NO wind, it can heat up pretty good. So now I know. We're already looking for a drop-off point a little lower on that road so's we're not beating on our beloved Powerstroke so bad.

Man, I'm SO far out the thread now ('cuz I can't do this at work like SOME folks we know - ahem...), I have to re-apply for membership.

Posted by: 8042

Mr Tommy You Could Add Alittle Thicker Weight Trans Fluid, To Reduce Some Of The Heat For When You Go Trough Things Like That. I Mean I Have Alittle Thicker In My Hydra-Matic Transmission And It Does A Pretty Well Job, And Of Course Its Not Gonna Cool Like It Would If You Were Goin Down The Highway At 70 Mph, But It Will Help By Around 2-6 Degrees Which Might Not Seem Like Alot. But Its Always Good To Know That Your Transmission Is Operating At An Little Lower Tempeture.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

or learn from my lesson and shift into 4-low if you're going that slow over rutty, steep terrain. You can still be in 4-low drive. whitewater must be on vacation or away from his desk. he'd get in trouble if his bride caught him chatting with us from home img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

last quad is 250 lbs, Raptor 80. I like the idea of some kind of rear rack off trailer. To make frame of deck high enough to fit quad under, the angle to load and unload off the deck would be STEEP. Our deck is all aluminum. I've loaded it myself with sawhorses, but my wife and I do it all the time and it's maybe 250-lbs.

I'm not sure about adding to deck so I coud load one on the roof. I'd be pretty high with the quad on top. Plus heavier rack too.

I'd like to see some rear trailer bumper/atv rack ideas. I't be nice to have something I can fold up somehow, cuz i'm afraid it could bottom out in the one area where we go riding/camping. But it would also have to be strong enough to hold 300lbs, which makes me envision welding some gusstts or triangle pieces to make it not bounce and sag too much.

Confused and anyone else interested, I put some pictures in my gallery of my set up for transporting my toysThere's also a picture there of a rig I saw at Pismo that had a over cab rack on it. Real nice guy, talked to him at length about it. Lt. Dan

Whitewater, That's some pretty thick dust your talking aboutI'm sure you washed down all that dust with a nice cold drink

Have fun on the Colorado(like you had to be told that Lt. Dan

Posted by: Whitewater

Confused,

Listen here smart a$$ I've actually been working today (yeah right) I went to Southern Utah for the weekend - the outlaws have a cabin, and talk about Vegas coming to the mountains... It was crazy!! The dust was pretty thick. I went on several trail rides and I think I needed a HEPA respirator / SCBA to be able to breath through all of the dust (WAAAAA, WAAAAA). It was a fun weekend, but it needs to rain in Southern Utah (very dry). However, I have carb issues with my sportsman 400. I re-jetted it last night. Hopefully that works. I think it was manufactured on an indian burial ground.

Oh, and to answer your question about hauling ATV's...I agree with Lt. Dan. Just put a reciever on the back of your trailer (just like Mr. Tommy and me); haul it back there.

Hey, I get to go camping for 5-days (starting Thursday), and then back for 4-days, and then...gone again for 5-days (rafting the Colorado River) So, you won't have to listen to my constant rambling.

Posted by: rescuediver

Confused, 1) My trailer is 21 feet long.
2) Yes, it did affect the tongue weight. What I did was weighed the trailer, trailer/truck, tongue weight, weight over rear axle, etc. at a truck stop. What I found was, I had to fill the water tank at the front of the trailer to help compensate for the additional weight on the back. So, I added 40 gallons of water and drain black/gray tanks (they are in the back of trailer)
3) Tongue weight is 412 lbs. Approx. 12% of trailer weight. Which is good. All info I read says to be within 10-15% of trailer weight for the tongue. I'll have to fix the weight that got cut-off, SorryBR> 4) Weight of the generator and quad is approx. 360 lbs.
5) Yes, I made it myself, it's out of 2 inch angle, with I think 1/4 inch mesh wire for the bottom. I est. the rack around 80 lbs.
6) I used 4 inch channel to attach it to the trailer.
7) Yes, it's attached by the two 4 inch channel that is bolted using grade A bolts. 3 on each side. They are marked with paint. This is so, I can check for any movement.
8) Been in use for 3 years and no sag or movementBR> 9) I have weight distribution bars, so far, no major swaying issues traveling down the roadway. I avg. 62-68 mph.

That rig is heavy, The Chevy sits nicely with it, but don't know what the scales (or chp)would sayBR>
I can only laugh at your polaris remark, it's late and I just burned all my energy answering your questionsj/kIt's the wife's bike, she rides it 99% of the time, I'm on it when it when it has a problem. Usually the transmissionor when I'm loading it.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

thanks for the info. I've got 2- 30lb tanks up front, plus 2-6V batteries that weigh about 75lbs each. We usually have fresh water full when we leave, and always empty holding tanks wherever closest place is to do it. I have 30' trailer, weighs about 6500lbs full. so maybe I won't notice counter weight. I also run EQ hitch. it only removes the up and down motion from hitting bumps. I'm told sway control from EQ is a misconception. sorry 'bout the polaris comment (well, not really)... I know the Polaris folks love them and the rest of us give them a rough time.I may PM you to get more details when I'm ready to fabricate. looks like it's time to buy a wire feed and learn to weld! lol i know.. Its been awhile..

Posted by: confusedbuyer

awesome, thanks. now the Q's.

How long is your trailer?
Did it affect your tongue weight (i.e. act like a counter-balance and cause sway in the back)?
your weight estimate got cut-off, what did you figure for weight of quad and generator?
Did you make this yourself, or buy it pre-fabbed?
Is it just angle iron welded/bolted in those 2 spots at the back to give you your stability?
when you tie down quad to rack, it doesn't sag?
what do you figure rack weighs?

I guess that overhead rig works, but I don't like the looks of it. looks HEAVY for a 3/4 ton to haul. and clearance?guess it's not a problem, but with my barrell luck, I'd end up giving the quads an unwanted haircut.

whitewater, glad to see you're back and that you finally figured out that I'm a smarta$$ !! I figured out your carb problem, P-O-L-A-R-I-S.. Okay, now you and rescue can trash me for that one. well, you obviously need that adrenalin rush to keep your blood flowing. when are you skydiving and bungy-jumping next? this time try pulling the ripcord before you can read your licence plate #! , and shorten the bungy a little too, eh. LOL

and you missed all the other shots I've been launching your way, or you ignored me (you wouldn't be the first to do that).
Kamloops is dusty like that. maybe you're on to something: a Hepa built into the helmet along with goggles, all-in-one. and if you're forced to do some work this week, make sure you enjoy those holidays.

slightly off-topic, just to make you guys green with envy. Our voice as I call it (Lowermainland ATV Club) has managed to find/negotiate use of a nice chunk of gov't land on a lake for atvers to camp from, ride to, etc.., for free (sorta). We gotta do all the clean-up, and make it more accessable for our benefit and others. Anyone can use it, but I would think it will be mostly atvers, cuz who else would want to be around us?plus we're doing the work, we know we can use it, so we'll be making sure we try to get lots of us using it. that should scare away the butterfly catchers. we're making more trails for all users. lots of guys are donating time and machinery use.we had an atv raffle and raised around $10,000-15,000., so that will help too.

If I can figure out how this photo page works, I'll post some pics. It's in the Hemlock Valley, which is a beautiful, mountainous area in the middle of a dense rain forest. lots of good riding. Fishing at the lake too.

It's great to see what being organized can do. I'm reading too many horror stories from a lot of other states about how their atv use is constantly cut back and areas keep shrinking proportionately to the increase in rules and regulations.

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Sounds like a cool deal confused.

US Forest Service just put out new proposed regulations nationwide for OHV use. I scanned to page 9 (of 65!) of the proposal. Seems to be close in line to what Sierra N.F. uses around here. I just wish they would let us ride on any non-paved road. Would make traveling around much easier. Gotta love those nice long rides. The ones where you get back and breathe a sigh that there is still fuel in the tank. (I did 65 miles with about 3/4 gallon left in the tank.) I'll have to read it further. Give me some reading material for downtime at Pismo this weekend.

And on that line, sorta, while occupying myself while using the facilities I came upon a short article in the Fresno Bee that Madera County is going to try and do an OHV park. One of the Supervisors (person on the Board of Supervisors...county elected body, ala Congresscritter) owns 2 ATVs. He said that Miami (where me and powerstroke01 ride a lot) is really busy (LMAO...I seen 15, maybe 20 people there on the 3rd) so they want to open a park in Madera. Something along the lines of 5-100 acres! Probably be some kind of tracks, which would be cool.

Let's put this in perspective. Most roads around here are 1/2 mile apart. This incloses an area of 160 acres, or one-quarter Section of the Township and Range System. So they are looking at a VERY SMALL riding area.

Miami has some 60 miles of trails.

Guestimate of acreage:

Township 6S, Range 21E, Mount Diablo Baseline & Meridian. Yes, I'm becoming a map geek...just ask power. One Township (north-south) and one Range (east-west) are 6 miles square (36 square miles).

All or part of Sections 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 22 & 23.

That's 11 sections at 640 acres each for 7,040 acres. Granted, you only have a dozen trails to ride on. Plus you can ride on any Level 2 road (vertical post marker).

Posted by: powerstroke01

yeh you like those maps.. lol

I still need to go to North Fork and pick up one of those maps..

we sold approx. 12,000 tickets at $2 each. we printed 25,000, and were licensed to sell up to 47,500 ( fat chance of that happening). 3 prizes, oh, yer gonna luv this after the way i was hacking on you and whitewater about polaris. we had 3 prizes.winner chooses what he wants between an '03 Polaris 330 trail boss 2wd, OR, an'03 Honda 350 ES (electric shift, beauty), also 2wd. 3rd prize was a Honda 1000W inverter/generator. pretty safe to say the inverter would stay 3rd prize. If you didn't specify, you won the Honda quad first. to me it was a no-brainer, I sold 130 tickets and never really explained the choice issue, just told everyone they'd get the Honda for 1st, and NOBODY complained. well, I guess a guy with no-brain won 1st, cuz he chose the Polaris!!img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> I looked at the 2 machines at the raffle/BBQ/open house, and the honda just seemed so much nicer. But hey, you Polaris guys must be Marine-trained, cuz you'd run through a wall for one! Pretty loyal. If re-sale means anything, Honda would definitely be the one.

I'm gonna take some digitals of the campsite tomorrow, we have a clean-up crew going out. And guess what, I'll try to post them!

Okay, to answer your Q, it's 1-1.5 hours from my home (City). for guys living in the Valley, it's 30-45 minutes. ANd i kinda was bragging about the campsite, not to be arrogant or boastful, but just to make everyone mad enough to start their own orginization or group to lobby their elected officials to back off. And you can use us frozen canuckleheads as your example.

yeah Miami is my backyard.. Well almost.. Its about a 8 mile ride to get to it.. I dont even have to load the quad. Tho most of the time i do anyways...
Its a nice riding area with a lot of nasty trails.. Whenever a trail says for cycles only DONT take a big ute down it.. lol These fenders will never look the same..

I love this french stuff.. lol

Lets just say that the quad met a tree at 20-30 MPH... Ended up needing a new frame. Now its got alot of other problems..
Other than that, I LOVE THAT QUAD... Its got 1000miles in a lil over a year so im doing good..

Getting lost: we had 2 GPS (ok, mine was about worthless) and maps...still went the wrong way!

Pismo for the weekend...shouldn't get any situations of temporary impairment of location identification.

Whatever the hell it was it hurt... lol
Eh The not being able to start in gear, the rear wheel is still bent, ALOT of vibration in the front end, steering is still off, some of the plastic is not connected.. Mostly just little stuff like that...

GPS is nice if you know how to use it.. lol Which i sometimes wonder if i do..

It hurt? Well...yah it sure looked like it hurt. BR>
No start in gear is brake switch. Tell those idiots at Clawson to fix it. Or take it elsewhere and have then bill Clawson.

Clawson doesn't sound French-Canadian! Call Bombardier in Montreal. "Bonjour, je m'appelle Marie. Qu'est que ce?" Boy, is my french horrible and rusty. Just tell them , "Tabernacle!" (Now that one i know is a good swear word). BR>
what happened to your SST surround spar technology? just razzin' ya. I've heard those tree/log impacts are hard on equipment. steel rack instead of that plastic stuff may have helped tho.

Clawson is Clawson Motorsports of Fresno. Local dealer for Honda, Kawi, Yamaha, Bomb and Suzuki (the only brand they DON'T sell is AC (and I could be wrong on that) and Polaris) as well as a pretty good sized Honda Car dealer. The motorsports is stuck in the back lot of the car dealer. And if their work on power's bike is any indication, I'd never buy or have anything services there. I know they are about 25% higher on some pidly parts for the Warrior. I go to the OTHER Yamaha (KTM, Kawi, and serveral crotch rocket makes) dealer in town. Between these 2 dealers, the only make not available is Polaris. Closest full-line Polaris dealer is about 15 minutes south in Fowler.

I believe it's actually SINGLE Spar Technology. And it got bent.I still think you could have rode the rest of the day...well...the bike could have.

Confused, I probably would of picked the Polaris first. It would of made tooth picks of the tree or log that Power hit,j/k. (Hope you weren't hurt badly Power?) Have you looked at the front end of those things? They are built like a tank, no wonder they weigh so muchnot much plasticAnd I was in the Armyhey taught us to use our heads, so, I would have gone around it, not through itBR>
BlackandRed, Cuddles to the supervisor, At least he is trying to get a new OHV park built. The more the merrierIt might be small at first, but, maybe over time it will grow.

well rescue, like I said...."no-brainer".... JUST KIDDING.what are you talking about??..... the front is all plastic, including the plastic racks (yuck, what's with these plastic racks? i can't stand them). AND you contradict yourself. surely the army woulda taught you to go around the tree too, or is it only the wall?? (maybe learning to go around the tree is where you make the next jump to airforce?)LOL. BR>
well, as usual I'm being too judgemental. I guess too each their own, and that's the nice thing about having the ability to choose. now i know of 2 guys that woulda chose the Polaris over the Honda! and the rest of ya, what would you have chosen? NO, Bombardier wasn't an option! Tabernacle!
