no, its normal- they have straight cut gears- they are cheaper to make then a bevel gear but they whine. Plus like ac power and chumley said- the 650 v-twin is a whiney motor.....

Posted by: Mudpuppy193

Nah, nothings wrong with your 700- they have the same diff. and some diffs wine more than others- wait untill you get a few miles on it and it will prob. start whineing too...

Just to add something here, I recommend you change to Amsoil Gear Lube. It is great stuff. If you ride in water I recommend you get the Marine lube as it can hadle 10% water and still function at 100%.

How do you guys know I don't make this stuff up?????

Hey ACP, I sent you a PM, but there is nothing you need to lube. Just clean the air filter like you said. I also suggest you clean out your raidator (spray it down good) when you are done riding as they can plug up in the mud and overheat, but that is about it.

I used to ride a 95 Xplorer and that thing had like 35 grease zerks That got old real fast.

Mine whines almost all the time, low, high, whenever there is any amount of speed.

Yeh, buy the kawasaki version. =P

I'm not really saying anything, just giving you grief.

I know that mine makes noise, and it's not the only one to do it. I know the noise is normal on the v2. I don't know what parts are the same between models, so.. *shrug*

I also know that I love the crap out of my V2.

Posted by: v2rider

Yes it is normal. Its actually the engine breaking making the noise

Posted by: v2rider

Thats a suzuki setup, not a kawi setup. The whine is only in the V-Twins

Posted by: v2rider

lol

Posted by: v2rider

Yeah catterman, you seem smart

Posted by: acpower

its normal on the 650 V2 if you are in low gear. mine sounds like a jet engine in low gear when i go 20+ but when im in high theres no sound like that. just the low gear on the V2s.

Posted by: acpower

catterman, you seem to be smart so ill ask you a ?. should i ever be oiling or greasing ANYTHING on my machine? the only thing i have been doing is oiling the air filter. i thought the manual said everything is maintenence free. if im wrong please correct me and tell me what i need to be doing. thanks.

Posted by: acpower

yours isnt going to whine AC700. its only the AC 650 V2s with the Kawasaki engine. The Suzuki and Arctic Cat engines dont do it.

Posted by: AC700

No, it isn't normal. Check your gear oil. If it's full the previous owner may have run it low or dry and caused the problem. If it's low on gear lube, fill it and see if that helps. Other wise, you probably have a bad bearing.

If it's the engine breaking in the transmission, then it isn't in the front end. The trans noise if normal. However if it's the front differential it's not normal.

Ok, are you saying the differentials are different? Aren't they all made by AC? Not trying to be smart a.. but.... My point was, if the noise is from the tranny,,,ok,,if it's from the differentials it could be a problem. Am I wrong. And no thanks on the 650V2, I like the 700, it has great enginge braking and plenty of power for me.

With a couple of rides coming up this week and next and a trip to Lake Hilbert Wisconsin in late August for 300 miles in three days. I'll be looking at somewhere around 1,200 miles by Sept. first. If it's going to whine it should by then. Whine or not, the AC's are great quads and I wouldn't consider going back to Yamaha who I was loyal to for years.
Amsoil is a great product. I run Mobile One in the engine and also use Mobile One in all my commercial mowing equipment. Really have had great results. By the way, I still like my Yamaha's and still have two Kodiaks, I'm just very disappointed in their products over the past couple of years. Not Yamaha bashing.

Just bought a 2004 arctic cat 650 and noticed the front end has a high pitched whining sound. Is this normal?

Posted by: foushman

I called the dealer and he said his makes that whining all the time too. I'll check the gear oil anyway. Thanks, Brian
