FWIW we have two 500 TRV's one with 26's and one with 27's. With the 26's I can corner better and accelerate faster. On group rides I find it much harder to keep up with the pack when riding the 27 machine then with the 26 inch machine. The lower CG and smaller tires makes a huge difference. The added ground clearence of the bigger tires is nothing compared to the loss of handeling and power. I will go back to the 26's when these 27's need replacing or sooner if I can find a set of 26's cheap enough.

Sorry - I was out of town to Chicago for a few days -

The TRV does not have the same turning radius as a standard machine. How much it effects snow plowing? Based on the number of chunks out of my garage I would say that the 500 polaris isn't any better LOL. The heavier big footed TRV will be a better snow plowing machine for average sidewalk driveway applications. The larger turning radius isn't that signficant considering the TRV will be better at holding a line in tight spots. Working a corner is nothing compared to not stopping a drift into the wifes evergreens. If I needed a new machine today - I'd go buy another TRV or possibly the TBX (toolbox) version. With kids - its TRV all the way - no worries. And yes- the 500 has enough power to get you into all kinds of trouble. More is not needed.

i had 28' gators on my 03 500i manual.
and it had no issues with fit but it was very hard on the drive train.
i never had a problem with them untill i hit just over 800 miles with them then i broke an axel coming out of a creek up a bank.
that was the RR axel.
then 300 miles late another LR axel.
then the L again and the front diff the same day.
all im saying is if you ride hard it will brake faster.
if it dont have the power to turn the tires in the heavy stuff something else will.
stick with 26" or 27" it will last longer and with all that GC you have you can stay with the smaller tire and still be highte most other quads.
as for tires i had mudlites and i think that the mudbugs are a far better tire and cost less and weigh the same.
27" bugs would be sweet on that because there a real good mud and hard pac tire and there also good in the snow.
i have a few freinds with them on there quads and they love them.
good luck.

what is the largest tire size the 500 auto can handle with out mods? I was thinking of 26's but if it can handle 27's than I would go that route. Any help you can give me would be great.

How was the high range for trails?

Posted by: UGLY88

I would like to go with 27's with 10" wide in front and 12" wide in back. I am probably going with MudLites since they have served so well with the Wolverine. Will the extra weight of the AC affect the Mudlites at all? I only do about 25% Mud so I do not think I should go with OutLaws or anything that extreme. I am looking for beeter traction in the steep hills and forest on our land in Western Wisconsin. I do try the creeks every so often and the stockers suck for mud.

I have a problem with the transmission exhaust in a creek crossing coming out the other side.

THanks for the input.

Thanks again for the input guys. I think I am going to go with 26" Mudlite XTR's. I am just waiting to save up and find a good source. They should be 10 times better than the stockers.

By fall, the H1 will be available in a TRV

i had 27 inch itp 589's on my 500 a few years back (03) and that poor thing was robbed of alot of power in high range. everytime we went somewhere i was always the first to run out of gas. now that i got my 650 i got 27's on it and there is hardly any power loss but i wouldn't go with anything bigger then 26's on a 500 the extra half to one inch of ground clearence can't be made up with the power loss you will suffer in the mucky stuff.

I have an 06 500 auto with 27-10-12 in front and 27-12-12 in the back. Buddy has the same size on his 05. No problems, bike handles it easily. you will notice a power loss, but not enough to worry. When it gets too bad, thats what low is for. By the way, 500's kick ass in the water. They just don't get wet!. Getting a little tired of winching out them little polaris and yamaha's, lol

I had an 03 500 auto. I had 28" Dirt Devil's on it from the day I bought it. In low range it had plenty of power to through anything.
