My 2005 manual says 40 lb/ft regardless of what wheels. What's interesting is the 2001 manual calls for 50 lb/ft.

After getting off my quad i checked the lug nuts and i could turn them with my fingers !!!!! He had to go about 5 miles back to the truck to get his lug wrench . now that scarred me prettygood . it was just the one rear wheel but after over 20 yrs as a machanic it made me double check everything after that !!! And my bro asks if i tightened the nuts evertime we ride now. I get him back by asking if he want's me work on his brakes lol !!!! sorry i didn't intend on making this such a long post lol have a good bear, williebee
Well Williebee, I agree. I get anal about lug nuts (lost a wheel off a trailer once, my stupid). I never carried anything special on my 250 for lug nuts, but I check them every 60 days as a periodic maintenance plan I have. Well while riding the 400 with a group we had a guy have your wheel problem with loose lug nuts and the provided wench was pretty useless. Now I carry a deep 1/2" drive socket with a 1/2" ratchet with the handle bobbed to 8" and an 8" pipe as an extender. Now there is no lug nut I can't tighten or get loose for that matter.

Depends on how long a wrench handle you have. If you've got a foot or better of leverage and are young or strong, yeah you could over torque them by double. Over torquing stretches bolts and studs, which weaken them. And depending on the wheel shape at the hub you could distort the wheel too. Every one that works on equipment should have at least one torque wrench (I have 6, 3 inch/pound ones and 2 foot/pound ones and a metric one, but I'm lazy and don't like to convert from foot/pounds to inch pounds, etc).

Hi,
Does anyone know what the proper lug nut torque rating is for an 2006 500 FIS? Mine has the standard steel wheels, but I may add alloys later so I'd be interested in this spec also...
