I run 27" Bearclaws on mine, but I'm not trying to race it, it's a utility bike. I wanted rim protection and a lot more traction, that's exactly what I got. If you wanted to go 60 mph, you should have bought a bigger motor, simple. I don't know if you're new at this or not, but I can get over ANY tree. Most bikes will have problems climbing over an obstacle if you put the front tires against it, so will your car if you chock the wheels, so that statement, to me, seems unwarranted as far as the tires go. Trt rolling up to it slowly, in LOW range 4X4 and see what the result is. 589's are about the heaviest tire you can get, even in stock size. Mudbugs or Mudlights are a good choice.

I agree with Bear ,no way a 400 is gonna turn those 27's
especially with the tread you are talking about.

26's isn't to bad I wouldn't go 27's, Why would it take way from your top end speed? it should add to it, but you will have less power.

I am on my second set of 26inch mudlites on my 2003 AC 400. The first set met an early demise to what looked like a knife to the sidewalls and did not wear out. I am not concerned with going fast, or acceleration just getting to where I want to go. I went with the 26 inch tire to get the larger lugs to dig through the thick stuff. I did not notice any increase in ground clearence although I am sure there is some.

I now see that they make a 25 inch swamplite tires. With lugs about the same as the mudlite. If it performs the same then that may be a better option. It just has larger lugs for a 25 inch tire than most.

If I had to get a new set I would looka t those mounted on a set of ITP type 5 aluminum wheels.

If you do you will loose a ton of performance, both acceleration and top speed and there aren't really any hop up stuff for the 400 to counteract it..

Wrong, it take so much horsepower to go so fast and unless you are against the rev limiter in high at max speed you are going as fast as the horsepower and gear ratio will let you. If you make the ratio high (which is what putting bigger diameter tires on does) without an increase in horsepower you will go slower, not faster. it will make your spped read off too.

don't go with anything taller then a 25 inch.

What size tire would you guys suggest for an '03 400 auto? I would like to go with 27's for the added ground clearance, but I'm not sure if they would take away too much power. I am probably going to go with a Titan 489 or 589 tire.

Thanks,

Jon

Buy a 400, and put 27" tires on it. Hmmmmmm. You probably have an escort with one of those loud exaust pipes also, so it "sounds" fast? Or should i put my grandpas johndeer tractor tires on my 650? JK If you want to put 27's on your 400, ill pull you home later.

I just put a set of 26 in mudlites on my 06 400 ac. I can definately notice a decrease in acceleration. The tires really make the bike look good. The tires added about 30 pounds of wieght (26-10-12/26-12-12) to the bike. Also after about 25 mph the speed is off almost 5 mph. Top speed droped by about 8 mph.

I went out the other day and really tried out the tires. they suck! I pulled up next to a downed tree and tried to drive up on it; the bike woukd not turn the wheels with the front tires touching the tree. I got stuck numerous times because the bike can't get up speed to up anything or through anything. I'm going back to original size tires. I'll sell you these for a good deal. Only 68 miles on them.

I would never never ever put anything more then a 26 on a 400 AC auto. If it was a manual maybe. I had a 03 400 auto. They do not have near enough power for 27's. I had 26' mudlites on mine, it had 15' of ground clearance. It would go through a hell of a lot just for the sake of the ground clearance, but i had to sell it. It just didn't have the guts i wanted.

I have an 04 auto with 27" mudbugs. Tires will get me through just about everything. Can feel the loss of torque but they do work. Broke an axle first trip out with them but was worth it after out riding everyone. Left them all in the mud holes that I walked through. Also noticed when tires are completely submerged the motor is really working hard. Tires are definately too big for the bike but having too much fun to take them off.
