One of the biggest problems with off road vehicles is keeping the big chunks of crap and water out of the air filters. An air diverter deflects the air flow so the the big pieces and water fall out of the air stream and are directed out of the system. In bigger, expensive outboard boat engines there are fairly extensive diverters so that any water does not reach the carb(s). Even though the 2004 V-2's the shows the diverter on the cooling section of the parts breakdown, it is part of the air induction system.
