I had a 375 that I put about 3500 miles on and I didn't have any problems that I didn't cause. In my opinion the machine was tough as nails. My Father and I rolled it at least ten times, straighten out the racks and handlebars and your back on the road! Buy a quad with plastic racks and you'll be buying new racks.
You hear about the 650 tranny problems a lot but that's actually Kawasaki's Tranny not AC's. The Auto tranny in all other AC's is the duramatic. They've had it for 5 years, and it's tough.
They're good bikes. Go for the '05 400. You'll be glad you did instead of the 300. Namely a locker and a lot more power than the 300. Give it at least 100 miles to get broken in. You'll notice the extra power when it does!

I've also got a 375 (same motor/tranny as 400) and it has been bullet-proof. It has also been rolled several times. Great machine, reliable powertrain. I have to throw in my 2 cents worth on the 650--I havn't had any trouble with mine. My dealer is also a Kawasaki dealer and apparently knows how to set up the tranny. I love it. Both of my A/C's have been great machines.

Thinking of buying a 2005 or 2004 arctic cat 300 or 400 4x4. Good and bad about how reliable cats are.

Arctic Cat ATV's are VERY reliable. I have a 98 with 4000 hard miles, Mud bogs, rock crawling, long hard trail rides on the Piute Trail system for 5 years in a row. Very few and minor problems. (Mostly operator error.)
I also have the new 650 with 500 miles on it and so far I love it. I have not had any belt problems at all. It went to the Limp Mode once at 100 miles but I reset it, nothing since. In our family,(including cousins) we have a total of 11 Arctic Cat utilitys and all are very happy owners. If you are considering a Cat, you can't go wrong. I would suggest a 500 or 650 for the extra power and liquid cooled motors.
