I would have to get the 400. I would consider it over a 450 honda, and I think the 450 is a lot better quad than the Rancher in that case. My main preference would be the 400I, but the ACT 400 brings a lot to the table, and is a solid built quad. Plus, this isn't that 371cc quad that they used to be. Its the 376cc motor that they put in the 375's when they came out and also the Suzuki Eigers. Its a pretty good engine, with more zip to it than the old model 400's.
ACT suspension is freakin awesome too. Anything you could want out of a straight axle quad and a lot more. Far more stable in any situation, I don't care what anyone says. My 99 AC was that ACT and you had to work to try and flip it over. Flexes 10 times as much on uneven terrain than a Grizz 660 with its sway bar intact. Ride is great, enough fender clearance to probably run 28's stock even.
For the money, the AC400 is probably one of the best buys out there. I'm not going to say its going places that the Rancher can't, because most 4x4's can follow each other anywhere. Main things that will hold one back from another are ground clearance and power. I could probably take a Timberwolf in as many places as I could my Grizzly, except for anything that the locker would help the Grizz out in.
But depending on what you want to spend, a Rancher is a good quad. Priced within $500 of each other, I take the 400 AC though.

I have a 375 ACT, which is the same machine. Trail blazing is this machine's forte. It has a much more sophisticated suspension than any Honda short of the Rincon. It has better ground clearance, ride, rack capacity, and suspension articulation. It will keep all 4 on the ground much better when the terrain gets nasty. What it can't walk over, it will slide over with that smooth skid plate.
I ride with all kinds of ATV's, and I have yet to see a Honda with a swing-arm rear end get through or over the stuff that the old 375 does. Nothing against Honda. They make great machines, but riders being equal, they fall just a bit short, as does any traditonal swing-arm machine.
Its a great machine. That's why I kept mine even when I bought the 650.

It's really a matter of preference. I would buy a Rancher but the next person might want the AC. Either would fit your needs.

With the prices being similar I would have to pick the Cat. You get the winch 2 year warranty, for peace of mind, bigger motor, a rear suspension that should be more comfortable, disc brakes instead of drums, bigger tires, and larger fuel tank. Dont get me wrong the Honda is a great machine, but with the winch and 2 year warranty, the cat just jumps way ahead in my opinion

Looking at purchasing my first ATV and was wondering what way I should go. I will mostly be using it to hunt down logging roads but to explore into untracked territory as well. The prices of the AC 400 4X4 ACT and TRX 350 are very similar. The AC comes with a 2500 lb winch and 2 years warranty. Honda 6 months and no winch. Althought the AC is almost 100 lbs heavier than the Honda it has 55 cc more. Which bike will have more power compared to weight? How will the ride compare? Honda's have been around forever and AC are relativley new are they reliable like a Honda bike? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
