That thing looks sweet! If I had my 660 engine, diff-lock, and steering ease in that chassis, I don't think I would say another word about any quad. It just looks flat mean.

Everyone has been saying that if the "I" had a locker, it would be the machine to have. I submit that a locker can be made for it with very little cost and effort. If anyone that has an "I" will take a close look, they will see that the front and rear differentials are exactly the same. From what I have seen of diagrams of the insides, the only difference is the racheting cones have been permantly engaged on the rear differential. I think that with some good old Yankee ingenuity that this could be made to be selectable on the front. All you "I" owners take a look at your differentials and let me know if yours are the same right down to to the front wheel drive engage linkage port, front and rear. They were on the prototypes, just reversed.

I forgot one thing in my previous post. I have been told by some very reputable persons. Contrary to how it looks, all you have to do is rotate the lever slightly more forward I believe and it will lock the front end. This was done at the factory on the prototypes, but not incorporated on the production models due to liability concerns. It gets very hard to steer and becomes unstable above 20 mph. It's hard to incorporate a rev limiter to a mechanical connection that is reliable and not cost prohibitive.

Yes, as far as I know. According to my source the front differentials are the same on all the cats now. The front and rear are different between the ACT's though, less someone not be thinking correctly.

RobAlford. I only know what I have been told. I was told it was still a racheting cone lock system. Whether it's the same as it was or has been changed to fit the new differential case I cannot say. I'll try and the info, but I don't hold much hope for that. Circumstances beyond my control have caused me to lose my factory connection. Sorry.

Is the ratcheting cone different on the new ('02) models from the older ('00 & '01) models? I know the engagement is different but is the diff. the same?

What is the top speed of your 500i? Very nice looking quad. How does the power compare to the bigger 4x4's? Was thinking going griz but if the 500i is as good as it looks ill be going that way.

Really cool web site with the engine sound and everything. Cool pictures, you only get one chance to take a picture of your machine when it is new....will never be that clean again!
What size are the 589s?
I am considering Goodyear Mudruners, 589s or Bearclaws for my Sportsman. (26")

Rides4fun......Man that is one great looking guad....my hats off to you...I just wish I had one just like it....Only thing is it sure looks like it is a very heavy machine...how does it handle and run?

Hay Rides4fun what a outstanding looking machine. I am going to have to get me one of them before they are all gone. The question is do I get an auto or manual trans. After looking a your machine I think I am being converted for buying 500 sportsman to a 500i cat. Good luck with your machine.

Looks good. How much $$$ are the dealers getting for one?

Man that is a great looking machine. I like the idea of the manual tranny. Everybody seems to like the autos but not me. I hope you like it and have as good luck with your AC as I've had with all mine in the past. Be sure to let us know how it handles.

I got it! They actually exist!
The truck driver got lost and didn't show up until about 2pm, but everything worked out (including getting the tires changed out).
Not only is this thing TALL.... But it is WIDE too! For the Ground Clearance photos I used 3 unopened Bud Lights stacked ontop of each other. Almost 13" of GC!!! For the width photo I used a 48 inch level.
Due to it's width it seems very stable so far. And I think the 26" Titan 589 M/T's look great on it. I still have the rear bumper to install, some rack extensions and the 2500 pound Warn winch. I'll update the pictures then.
I put up a temporary website, until I have some more time to work on it. So far I love it......

Out the door (quad, destination, tax, etc) was 6599 with Warn 2500 pound winch. I would have paid more, this thing is a monster

I personally don't know but, from what I've heard it's ~55.
If top speed is important to you, I would look some other quads, AC's are not top speed vehicles. They are work horses, that ride through the trails with little effort. Having riden most other big bores, what I like most about the 500i, is how is swollows bumps, ruts, and holes. I don't go around, I go through them. Hill climbing is excellent as well, amble torque and excellent traction/balance.
To be honest with you, the fastest I've been on any of the trails I've been is 30mph. I find the technical stuff more fun(mountain trails, steepness, mud, creeks), which is generally from 5 to 15 mph. I would argue that the torque is comperable to the other bigger quads, but more than adequate for most things. If you want bragging rights, I believe this years testosterone winner is the Polaris 700, next year who knows, they always get bigger. Bottom line is what you are going to do with it. The 2002 Grizz 660 is comperable to the GC/Travel but should have more top speed, if you need it.
Just my .02 on the size and top speed thing.

Hey Weedy.
I have 26x9x12 589 M/S's in the front (rounder on top, better for steering)
I have 26x12x12 589 M/T's in the back (flatter on top, better for traction)
I only went 1" over on heighth and 1" over in width, to avoid any potential issues with going any larger.
Good Luck.
