Sounds like your brakes need to be correctly bleed for one. The gas gauge problem is somehting I am not aware of. And the High Low thing is actually correct. The gears for High and low are engaged by a 3" round gear with 4 VERY large teeth on it's side. So it will not always slip into possition correctly. The best thing I would recomend is trying to shift from high and low while in first gear and rolling about 3 mph. This seems to work the best.

As for the rest, get you a new dealer. Even if it means haveing to switch brands.

The best way I have found to shift in and out of high and low range is to come to a complete stop, and from neutral push your heel shifter down [this disengages the clutch]and then move the lever back to high range, then let up on the heel and you are in first. This procedure works absolutely perfect 100% of the time. I have never heard a grind or any noise for that matter when using this method. I usaually check to see if the hi-lo selector will move first with a liitle pull, if not I just push down on the heel and bingo in she slides in with no grind. Try this and I think your problem will be solved.

Cheers Jim

I don't know if you have a different dealer but I would definetely take it to another dealer. The main reason I drove an additonal 30 miles to another CAT Dealer was because of how I seen the dealer treat another customer. I felt if they would do that to him they sure would do it to me.
Anyway, the backfiring is probably from it not being jetted properly. Check to see what size jet you are running and what altitude then see what someone else is running for the same area. I know a few people have mentioned problems with the master cylinder being bad. You may want to do a search and see what they did to correct the problem.
I think I have used the HI/LOW shifter a couple of times once was when there were four adults on the thing and I didn't want to go fast. The only other time was when I first got it and was trying it out to see the difference between ranges. Mine never made and noise or gave me any problems.
I am sorry that your dealer has such a lack of intelligence. I hate to see people have problems with their machines. I know I have taken mine if for some minor trouble. It was my fault and the dealer fixed it right on the spot. I didn't even unload it from my trailer. It took a total of about two minutes. I just told his mechanic what was wrong and he walked out and looked at my machine and fixed the problem.
As far as the Polaris machines they are good. They require a little more maintenance with all the grease zerks but other than that they are no problem. My dad has the non-HO sportsman and it has plenty of power. He really loves it!!! I just picked up a 95 TrailBlazer for my wife and she is happy.

Hello, I have been thinking for a while about getting a HO. I have had my Cat500(shift) for 4 months now. It has been to the dealership for brake problems 4 times. Part of the problem is that the dealership that I got this thing from will not give me the time of day. I have talked with the big boys up at AC and they have been very nice to me and have said many times that your problems will be fixed. The AC has spent more time in the shop then the days that I ahve been able to ride it.
When I brought it in 2 weeks ago for broken fuel guage, brakes plain old suck, hi/low shift lever and it back fires like a mad man. They told me that the gas guages are just that way, and it will fall apart again but they will fix it. I dont even know what is going on with the brake problems, i was out ridding a month ago and the fitting from the master cylander to the brake line came off, so brake fluid came out and dis-colored my plastic but they say that is just wear and tair on the finders, Im not stupid i know what brake fluid does to things. The high/low shift lever will not go back in to high unless i put the think into gear and let it make a bad grinding noise, and what does the dealership say, "thats the way its going to be and there is no way anyone can fix it" and to top it off the thing back fires like you can not believe.
Thanks, sorry about the spelling very tierd todya

Welcome to my world!!! I feel your pain.
I've had the same problems and more, except for the brakes. My shift lever was very hard to get from forward to reverse, told the dealer, he said it would wear in. A metal tab that holds the shifter cable finally broke. I brought it in to fix it and 6 weeks later I got it back they kept telling me a spring was on back-order. I talked to another mechanic in the shop about the stickiness and he said they are adjustable, now it shifts great.
In the year that I've had it the clutch bearing went out, blew out 3 headlights, broke the oil filler plug for the rear-end (after checking it when I picked it up and found out there wasn't ANY oil in it), constantly blew out the fan fuse, fuel gauge broke......
I had the chance to talk to a rep from AC at the Game Fair in Ramsey at the Armstrong Ranch. He was very sympathetic to my problems and assured me that the '02 bikes are improved. The improvements they made were based on customer feedback and warranty repairs.
The best part of the Game Fair was that I had the chance to ride the '02 500i auto. Man what a machine!!! smooth as silk and turns sooooo easy. They are being shipped around here the end of September to early November. I AM GETTING ONE!!!
By the way, you didn't happen to get yours in Cambridge, did you?

Good Luck!
