To replace the bearing you need #3 phillips screwdriver and a bearing puller. A cheapo one will do. The bearing cost $17.64. You pop thae blue cover off of them and relube them your self. All it takes to get the cover off is the sharp point of a pocket knife. They just snap back in place when your done. As a matter of fact, I would pregrease it before putting in a new one, just to make sure its full.

Sure sounds like your bearing is out to me.

Where did you go? Up to Nemadji?

Sorry to hear about the bearing! I noticed on their new web page that the bearing is now described as more robust. Hopefully they have cured the deficiency.

I was at Nemadji last weekend and somebody was telling me that the sink hole had been filled in and there was no more mud there. It's good to hear that it is still there.

A little mud is needed on that trail. I know that they had filled in the hole to the west of the sinkhole and the lands out there in the northwest corner. (got stuck there myself last year)

Dumb question time (I'm good at those)

Cracker, How did you tell when your clutch cover bearing "went out"? I have a 2000 Auto with about 1500 miles on it. Its been through some fairly deep water and mud (well up on the side of the transmission case), but usually for short distances only. I have had the Cat get water in housing to point it slipped only once. That time, I really needed a boat, but thats another story (Rubicon, Sportsman 500, 450 ES all drowned out that day). Other than that, I have never really had any trouble with it, until last weekend - it started making a "whirring" noise, any time the engine is above idle, (when the clutch is spinning). The best way I can describe the sound is like a ball bearing rolling around in a metal can.

I pulled the plastic vent cover off, and the belt looks good - I have not ventured into taking off the aluminum case yet, but have guessed it was a bearing bad. Is that the way you knew yours was bad? The machine still seems to pull and perform OK, although last weekend (when I first noticed the noise) it did seem be struggling a bit, but I really assumed that was a due to riding double in a fairly spongy creek bottom. What do you think? Appreciate any help,

Bucksnot,

My Dad's AC 500 had a problem blowing the ignition fuse when turning left. The dealer couldn't find the problem (useless!!), I finally traced it down to a plug just under the plastic under the speedo. The wires go to the run\stop switch. The plug had come partially unplugged & the prongs were grounding out against a clip holding the wire loom. Hardest part of the fix was removing the front rack & plastic. I just plugged it back together put a zip tie around it to hold it tight & wrapped it with black tape. Hope this helps, also never had trouble with my clutch bearing & I've swamped the tranny once.

Get used to replacing the bearings or plan on snorkling your transmission vents. I have replaced my bearings four times.

It sounds like the open bearing is unsuitable for the environment it's supposed to work in. If I were having a problem like this, I'd check with the local bearing supply house to see if they have a double sealed bearing to replace the open bearing.

Removed my belt housing and am having a tough time removing the bearings.Used a blind bearing puller, heated the aluminum case and pulled like crazy until I busted off the little tabs on the end of the puller.Does everyone have this much trouble? If you did how did you finally get them out?
I am glad that I removed the cover to check the bearings after reading about the trouble others have had with theirs. They weren't completely shot but were just starting to go.I am going to replace them with a better quality possibly Timken bearing if I ever get the old ones out.

I figured out how to get the bearings out of my housing.
First pack the hole in the center of the bearing really well with grease, fill it up completely and make sure that it gets underneath the bearing as well.Find a socket with an O.D. that fits nicely inside bearing I.D. Insert the socket into the bearing flat side down but first insert the proper sized extension into the open end of the socket and into its receptacle.Give it a couple of good whacks with a hammer and "voila " hydraulic pressure pops the bearing out lickety split.

Looks like it's a common problem! I've blown the bearing as well, after 70 miles. My ignition fuse didn't blow, my fan fuse blew as soon as I rode it the first day. It ended up being a problem with the way the dealer installed the warn winch (can't remember if it was crossed wires or not being grounded??).

Bucksnot, you mentioned snorkeling the clutch exhaust, were you having problems with belt slipping? if so did it help and where can I get one?

in2atvn, you also mention snorkeling the transmission vents, could this be the same as the clutch exhaust Bucksnot said he had? (I'm a mechanical dimwit!)If so was your belt slipping, did it fix it and last but not least where do I get one?

One more minor problem, I blew out both light bulbs after going through some deeeeeep water. The dealer told me they aren't sealed and I should ride with them off. I checked the Minnesota DNR page and they say I should ride with them on all the time, hmmmmmmmmmmmm!!??

Good Luck!

Also when replacing the bearings, put them in the freezerfor about 30 min. and they will just drop right in. Don't forget to put loctite on the bearing retainer screws. I was told to put neversieze on the shafts instead of grease. Hope it helps.

The way I got mine out was to just heat the cover but be careful this will warp if you get it to hot, or melt if you don't keep the torch moving. I replaced mine with NTN 6303 LLBC3/5C, It is a beefier bearing the seals are of a higher grade also. The cost was about $13.00 each the prices vary alot so look around. You should also put antiseize on the cover where the bearing seats against it, This will keep the reaction from aluminum and steel from seizing the bearing. It will be easier to get out next time. The main thing is to keep the water & mud out of it. I would recomend putting a snorkle on the belt exhaust. Good luck.

ep, sorry to say you are correct. I have heard of them lasting a long time from that point. But that is when I changed mine. It is really an easy job, if you can change a water pump on a small block Chevy you can handle it.
Boggit that is a good idea I never thought of that. I have used that trick to remove pilot bushings in crankshafts before but I never thought of it for this.

I had to replace the bearings on my clutch cover at 400 mi, I ended up welding a blot head to the bearing and using a 10 lb slide hammer I got them out. I also had the ignition fuses blowing, it turned out to be a wire up where the handle bars go through the plastic had worn through and was grounding out.

I've replaced my tranny cover bearings once, and did it myself. My tranny was so full of dry powdered mud that my top speed was limited to about 30 mph! The front bearing had locked up, so it took me 4 hrs. of trying to be patient and gently prying the cover off. The drive shaft had spun in the locked up bearing enough to cut some shallow grooves and ridges that held the cover on. I did get the cover off with a minimum of damage (scratches in the cover).
Be patient!! Don't try to force it! You may have left the stud concealed behind the brake pedal in... You should use waterproof grease on the bearings and in them if you pry off the bearing cover.
Gotta GO!!! A Hell of a storm just moved in and my surge protector is shot! Good Luck!

I had my new cat out this weekend for the 3rd time and went thru some mud and water. I drained the case as recommended and rinsed it out when I got home and drained it. As expected, the clutch cover bearing went out. I can't believe that the machine couldn't handle some water and mud running. Is this going to be an on-going problem with the auto and if it is, does anyone know of a good fix to alleviate this from happening? I thought that cover was supposed to be sealed but upon closer inspection I see that it is 2 pieces and one is plastic. So much for truth in advertising from AC.

Went up to the red top trail(4 miles east of Isle) and tried to get thru the sinkhole. Didn't make it but got thru further than 2 Polaris' 400 auto's and a Yamaha Grizzly and still backed out on my own without getting winched as they did.

To anyone who has replaced the Bearings on the Clutch Cover, did you do it your self or did the dealer warranty the repair? If you did it yourself, were there any special tools needed and what was the cost?

Gentlemen,

Gentlemen,
I will be up at Nemadji on Saturday working out the kinks on the Cat after the dealer replaced the bearings under warranty. I don't think I will be going thru any deep water though until the warranty expires and then I plan to snorkle the Cat so it can swim with the sharks.

I have 505 miles on my 01 500 Auto, and replaced my clutch cover bearings today. I got all back together, started it up, ran for about 15 secs and died, it is blowing the ignition fuse as soon as i turn the key. I brought in to the shop, they said they'd cover it under warranty. Any one else have any similar problems? I have also just snorkled the clutch exhaust.

Otis500,
The snorkle works great. I bought a 3" to 1 1/2" rubber reducer at Menards and a 1 1/2" hose ($10.00), removed the old exhaust on the clutch cover and put the new one on. I also capped the one under the seat. Haven't got water in it since. Some one else on here posted it before and I can't remember the name, but Thanks.

CatLance,
Thanks for the info. I dropped it off at the dealer wed and they still haven't started on it yet. !*&%!!!ers I guess I'll be riding my big red this weekend
