I'm still working on the wife. I've hunted up that way before. I hunted the Area around Avery. Is the area around where you are the Pan Handle zone?

I'm just tuning in. Is this an open invite? Can tags be purchased over-the-counter? Have hunted S.W. Montana for several years in late 80's early 90's, but getting tougher and more expensive to draw a tag. Did manage to take a bull-of-a-lifetime.....scored 350" - had 20" Royals.....that was off of public property w/o a guide (sure, there is always some luck involved). He is now in my living room - couldn't get him down the basement after I shoulder mounted him - the problems you like to have.......

Jim.....sounds like you have enough going on this year. Maybe next year(?). Things should have settled down for you by then. Do you bow hunt? Would like to try my hand at out-smarting a bull when they are bugling.

I shoot a Mathews UltraMax @ 70# - good for 300FPS w/ my carbons + 100 grain heads. I own some good whitetail property in Wisconsin - we grow muley size whitetail here - maybe we should work on a hunt swap.

Do you happen to have the dates handy again? Sorry, I lost everything when I moved back down here. I definately want to get up that way for the elk hunt, but am hoping it doesn't interfere with our own season. Steve and I have a elk hunting tradition of sorts every season, so I can't miss it. Our general deer season is Oct. 13-21, while our general elk season is Oct. 27-Nov4 -spike bull only. We both put in for cow or branched antler tags, but only time will tell if we get drawn or not. If I remember right, you had a early bull season, then a antlerless and a any elk season, is that right? Seems like you had much longer dates than we do, so I am really hoping to get out there to hunt with you. And, I'm still hoping to get out and do some scouting as well this summer, but still very busy at the moment and can't seem to get the time to get away for a few days. I'll keep you posted though for sure as to when it looks like I might have a break, maybe we can work something out.

Jim-
Thanks for the info, I'll write that down. My elk season runs from Oct. 27-Nov.4th. I have to be here for that, so those dates are out for sure. Our deer season runs Oct.13-21st, and till the 26th for whitetail in certain area's where I hunt. I'm not too worried about getting a deer this year-I found a pretty good spot where I should have no problem finding a legal buck-I've scouted it VERY thoroughly for basically the last year and know what they do, where they go, etc. The late season runs Nov. 10-18th, that would be fine hunting too for whitetail. Nothing very big, but will definately be legal size (3pt. min on one side).
I REALLY want to make it over there to try and hunt with you. I currently still have no job yet, so that naturally will take precidence-though when I do get hired where ever it may be, I will definately be telling them that I will be gone for that part of Oct. thru November, that if they hire me, I hope they understand that. If I am able to make it, I will come to you at your new place-if that's OK. Will you have room for me to put up a tent someplace nearby, or is there a motel anywhere close? If I come, most likely it will be me by myself-and my 'Cat of course. I haven't bought my tag yet, so if it's for a different area, let me know, I'll write it down for future reference, hoping that I can make it. I'm sorry-I guess I should ask you if you plan on hunting in your new area? I don't want you to have to drive that far back, so I'll come to you-especially if our chances are better! heh heh heh BR>
Anyway, better get going. Let me know what you think, if that would sound alright to you or not, or if you would prefer something else altogether.
Mike
-Oh, Good luck with the move too-should be coming up here pretty quick???

IdahoCatman,
Don't think I'll be coming up to hunt this year. Fire season down here in Calif. is off and running. There is no way I can get off in Oct. Hopefully next year.

Jim,
Thanks for checking in with us on this again.....
Man, it is in the middle of summer already & with all of the activites going on it is hard to plan ahead on hunting this fall. My Dad & I were planning on doing an Elk Hunt this fall, but with my new house & him spending $ on his house at the lake, I think we are both running out of $$ & time. It sounds like you are moving around a little up there as well.
My Dad & I appreciate the offer to make the trip up there, but right now I would say not to make any special arrangements for us. Things may change later this fall, & if they do, we will make do with whatever we can, but right now I would say it is going to be fall of 2002 before we make an Elk hunting trip anywhere.

Please......keep us in mind (referring to the ELK CAPITAL of the world).
Thanks,
Lance

Not going to be able to make it this year. Going to be a new addition to our family, and I would be dead if I left that late in the game. I hope that next year would still be available. Good luck to those of you who do go, and make sure and take some good pics. Jim, thanks so much for the offer.

Jim,
Where are you moving exactly? Is it any closer to Texas than the panhandle of Idaho? J/K. I hope the move goes well, but would still like to know where you will be living if it is the elk capitol of the state. Looking forward to next year.

Thank you for letting me know guys. The area I plan on moving to is the (ELK CAPITAL) OF the world. If everyone wants to try and make it next year that would be a much better area, more elk moose bear cat goat sheep, than anywhere in Idaho.

Elk City!!! sits in between five wilderness areas, almost to Montana. Closer to Texas but farther from the main drag. Population within 40 mile radious is less than 400.The place I plan on buying sits on the American river at 4,000+ feet, forest boundry is half mile from the house.LOTS OF GAME OF ALL KINDS.

P.J;This is an open invite, don't know where I'll be though.I plan on moving to elk city within the next few weeks. Depends on how fast paper work goes. The reason Ineeded to know if they were comming is I would make the 200 mile trip for those that already bought their tags,if they had'nt bought them I wont have to come back over here.

PJ. Tnx for the invite, but I don't travel,if I can't hunt it at home I wont hunt it.Got no desire to go back east,to many people, evan in the rural areas.Gettin to many here now, thus the move, glad I'm getting old, don't know what I'd do if I had 20-30 years left.I'm friendly and all but I like it without all the people around. Born 150 years to late.

hey Jim, where are you at on american river? i bet that i've rode by your place countless times. its nice to see that there is another person on the forums that knows the elkcity area. we own land out past sweeny hill, about the last private place out toward the wagon road. big elk creek flows right through our place. i know a heck of alott of trails up there, but i know that i dont know nearly all of them yet.
