I had the same problem on my old truck and all I found out was that the float level was too low and the jets would become uncovered and stall the engine. Most of the time it is the other way around, going up hill stalls the motor. But my quadrajet is mounted backwards so that's how that ended up. I would start there and check that your fuel line doesn't have any creases or unessasry bends to it. It deffently sounds like a carb/float problem that just needs an adjustment. Use that warranty. OK, AC troubleshooters I need some help?
Today I was riding my 2001 500 manual (only 180 original miles) and it started misfiring/dieing when going down long grades after rapidly accelerating then letting off the throttle and coasting. It didnt seem to have any problem when going straight, uphill or applying the gas. I installed a new spark plug, but it made no difference. Temperature was about 75F. Anybody know what could be causing this before I haul it to the dealer as it is still under warranty?

Well I did a thorough inspection today of the fuel system and THINK I found the problem. The fuel tank vent line felt to be pinched between the tank and the plastic frame. The engine seemed to idle better once I re-routed the line so it can move freely and not become pinched again. I will be taking it out friday into the mountains to see if this really fixed the problem. I want to thank everyone for helping me out. I will repost friday afternoon to verify the fix.
PS: Thanks for the tip on increasing the idle
speed to limit backfiring and Im running the
same jets that it came with new.

Just got back from 3 hours of riding and had no problems, so I guess the plugged gas tank vent line was the problem after all with the engine misfiring / dieing. Hopefully this hard lesson I learned will prevent some other new 2001 owners from experiencing the same thing. Thanks Again!

make sure the fuel tank vent hose isent kinked also what jets are u using?

I have a 2001 500 manual and I did get a little back-fire but not stalling.If you have not re-jetted then you are running stock at 145 main,I would first try to drain your float bowl, you may have picked up some moisture.Also if you tinker with things like me then turn your idle up a little,it really helped me with my embarrising back-firing .Hope this helps you out,if not see the dealer.
