Well as for the prices, the local dealer is adversizing the AC 400 at $4799 (while they last).
I would personally go with the 300. It has a better ride, extra tranny range, 2wd and locker(if you fix it right), cheaper, and I would think it would be less heat on the rider since the motor is farther back and there is no head pipe close to your leg like on the 400.

I did a little window shopping with my father-in-law today looking for a new quad for him. This will be his first experience with a 4 wheeler. He&39;s looking for something to do leisurely trail rides, take deer hunting, and plow snow. He&39;s looking at about a $5000 budget, give or take. He&39;s already ruled out the 500&39;s as being overkill for him.
We were looking at either the 300 or 400, 4wd. I already explained to him all the differences between suspensions, engines, features, etc. with each machine. The 300 out the door price (excluding sales tax) is $4599 and the 400 is $5000. First question, what do you think of the prices? Second, which would you get and why? I personally don&39;t think you could go wrong with either, but some opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.
As an aside, they had a new red 500a with ITP wheels and 27x9x12 and 27x12x12 Blackwater XT&39;s on it that they were getting ready to put on the showroom floor. It was pretty impressive looking. I&39;ve been thinking about getting a second set of tires/wheels, and seeing this just added some fuel to the fire! ;)

Thanks for the replies so far. I was thinking the prices were a little high, but the problem is there aren't very many AC dealers around here and they don't have a lot of competition. I think there are only three dealerships within a 150 mile radius from me, and they are all in different directions.
I really like this dealer for service, parts, etc.
Again, thanks for the replies so far.

I'll right you guys are really depressing me with these prices.
Another question, my father-in-law has a Chevy Z71 short box extended cab. Can you back a 300 or 400 into the back and close the tailgate? According to the spec's, the 300's & 400's are 79.5" long. His truck bed is a couple inches shorter. Seems like I remember Andy or somebody hauling their 500 backwards in the back of their truck. The rear wheels hit the front of the box and the front bumber hangs over the tailgate, if I remember right. Can anybody confirm if this works? Thanks.

Thanks for the responses... those are the answers I was hoping for. I knew my 500 wasn't going to fit in there very well, I haul mine in a long bed Silverado and I appreciate the extra room.
kcwhunter & ttaylor,
I had him look at the 500 auto's, but it was more money than he wanted to spend. I think an auto would be his best bet. Maybe something will come out of those 400 auto rumors you hear floating around. Otherwise, might have to look at another brand :o Still sounds like my area has the highest prices around.

Here in Missouri and in Illinois they are pricing 400 4x4 cats out the door before tax at $4500 even ! It may be worth driving a little to get a good deal.

kcwhunter,
I agree with you. There is a little saying "there is no replacement for displacement" I was seriously think about buying the 300 but I was concerned about the power output but everyone said that the lower gear ranges make up for it which is true. I was also buying it so my wife could ride too. I took her down to our local dealer for a test drive. She was just overwhelmed by all the levers and functions of the quads gear selections, 2WD 4WD. I opted for the more power and am going with the 400. It is simpiler to run and had more power and the steering is not that much harder than the 300. Plus with the rebates I'm paying the same price for the 400 as I was going to for the 300. From our dealer there is only $200 difference in price. $4,300 vs $4,500.

I know around Minn. they are going for 4299-4399 for the 4004x4 and the 300 only a few hunderd dollers cheaper. Best of luck for you...
Thanks

I have not looked very close at the autos, but they have been selling for 5399-5499 at the lowest priced dealerships and these dealerships are within 1hr of the twin cities
thanks

I have a 2000 Dakota & 2000 300 4x4 cat. If I drive the cat in & close the gate there's about 1" clearance to the back window scarey. If you back in there's about 6".

Tcat, do your Father in law a favor and talk him into a 500cc auto. It will be easier for him to drive and he will be happier with the power vs. the 300. I ride with a Father/Son team with 300's and quite frankly they have a problem pulling the hills and just keeping up in general. It is better to spend the extra money and have enough power than to make the wrong purchase and regret it. Just my honest opinion. POWER TO THE CATS!!!!

Our 400 will fit in the back of a 95 chevy 4X4 with the gate closed. The 500 won't because of the winch and extra front bumber along with the trucks plastic bedliner. Both will fit in my 99 Dakota R/T with no problems and the gate closed.

I hav a 500 auto and a '97 Z71 extended cab truck. The 500 fits in the back snugly if it is backed in. Otherwise the front push bar of the bumber rubs the window.
I would think that the 400 would fit in the back perfectly because of the smaller front bumper.

i think the 300 would fit the bill nicely. it might be a couple of hundred higher than up by me. call around. my dealer said that ac wants them to sell all of the 2001 machines before the '02s come out. he has the auto for $5500.

maybe the dealer will "throw" in the winch and the install. it won't hurt to ask for some kind of deal. the '02s will be out in 5 or 6 months and we'll know what they will be around june.
