FastEd,
Nothiing like sticking your foot n your mouth in front of thousands of people, by making assumptions about things you know nothing about. The Ads have nothing to do with the site being slow.
Our traffic has doubled in the last few months. We're out of bandwidth. Our line maxes out at about 8:00 AM in the morning and it doesn't taper off until late at night.
We have an order placed to double our bandwidth. As soon as they can get another line ran to our office the speed problems will go away.
Oh...and by the way...its those Ads that are paying for the new line so that your speed will be really good again.
Posted by: dbeck
When we deploy the new forum software it will have a low bandwidth setting where all graphics are turned off. This will help folks on dial-up.
Posted by: dbeck
FastEd,
You are incorrect. Our bandwidth is not affected by streaming video Ads. Those Ads stream from the 3rd party Ad agencies and therefore it uses their bandwidth, not ours.
We use special cacheing software, too. Which means most of the images (ads too) are already sitting in the cache on your PC and are not being downloaded over and over again.
Our pages are gzip compressed as well. Which will take a 90K page and reduce its size to about 10K.
The problem is we need more bandwidth. It has been ordered.

Hi everyone,
Please don't feel obligated to become a supporting member. Also, we don't treat supporting members different from anyone else.
The whole supporting member thing came about because people were contacting us saying that they appreciated the forums and that they wanted to show their appreciation by sending us donations. We appreciated the thought very much, but we didn't feel right taking people's money. So we came up with the supporting member option. That way people received the hat and stickers, which were about equal in value to the amount of money people were sending, and they also received added benefits in the forum as a bonus. We wanted to give people more in value than the dollar amount they were sending us.
This is why the supporting membership exists. Frankly, the revenue from it doesn't make much of a dent in overhead. But it does help and it is very much appreciated. Its especially appreciated because each time we see that supporting member icon it makes everyone here feel like the work we do is worthwhile. Its because of the thought behind it, that its meaningful. Thank you!
They are telling us the new line should be installed within 4 weeks. We're hoping it may end up being sooner but it all depends on QWEST and how quickly they start engineering the line.
Posted by: dbeck
Qwest installed our new line today. If you noticed we were down a few times today, its because while bringing in the new line they knocked down the other line several times. Anyway, the new line is scheduled to go live around May 8th and will double our internet bandwidth. That should take care of any speed problems that you have encountered.
Posted by: dbeck
The problem should be solved. The animation was changed a few days ago to limit it to 3 loops and then it ends. The Ads will also stop displaying on December 31.
Posted by: dbeck
The firefox web browser has a known problem with flash. If you access a flash page or a page with a flash Ad, firefox will consume 50% - 60% of your processor. There is no problem with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Posted by: dbeck
Actually, the days of being able to use a site on dial-up are pretty much long gone. Our site will probably not be very dial-up friendly any more. With the bulk of people having high speed connections, most all of our pages will be designed for high speed connections.
If you can't get DSL or a cable modem, you can get satellite for around $40 a month. www.wildblueyonder.com is a good 2-way satellite system.

yah that's smart.... and after that there's no site. You can not have your cake and eat it too. The only thing that's free is death and now that's even taxed to death, so a few extra seconds on the down I wouldn't complain about that. If you don't like the ads then don't come here plain and simple; just like I got tired of my bike is better than your bike posts so I left for couple of months and came back and it doesn't bother me anymore. I constantly click on sponsors and look around...

I don't understand why some have the problem when most don't. I don't have the problem and the site is faster than ever for myself.

I tired of having to wait until "POLARIS's" ad finishes its animation (sometimes more than 5 minutes) until I can proceed through the posts.
I'm so tired of it I rarely return to the site.
I see many posts on this subject. So why is this problem not solved?!.

Two different computers, one of them on 256K. I have no problems surfing other internet sites. So I think I don't "obviously have bigger problems". Thanks anyway for the helpful suggestion.

If anyone is interested, I may have found something that really speeds up page loads on ATV Connection (and Yahoo).
I removed a program called ADOBE ACTIVE-X from both of my computers (one Windows 98SE and the other Windows XP).
The Polaris ads (which were the problem) still apear, but the animation is no longer.

How anyone could complain because it takes 15 seconds to load a page is beyond me.
I hope you're joking. I love this site too, but I have a problem with having to "go have a cup of coffee or something". Waiting 15 seconds for a page to load is unacceptable, IMO. And, it should not require a cable modem to load a text page at a reasonable speed. Maybe if your downloading pics or videos, sure.
What it boils down to for me, is, that advertisers are going to pay money for exposure on the busier sites. Sites that load pages slowly will not survive in a highly competitive business such as this.
If, in the future, a different problem with ATV Connection causes the site to slow down, and if I don't have the patience to figure out a way around it, then I'll probably visit a lot less, just like the last time.
Something tells me that site administrators are now aware of this.

I fully understand the need for ads, and I have been coming to this site and buying things from the advertisers since 2002. However, when the ammount of ads being served diminishes ones ability to effectively surf this site and take advantage of the info herein then it is time to go elseware.

Dbeck,
I hardly think that I am putting my foot in my mouth and here is why:
1)I am quite in tune to the internet advertising world. I was the VP of sales and marketing for an internet advertising company for a few years.
2)Your lack of bandwith is directly affected by your streaming video ads. You can not tell me that the bandwith that is taken up to serve streaming video is less than what it takes one of us to download 50 lines of text to find out a solution for our ATV's.
3) Ad agencies pay you so much $$ per CPM which stands for cost per 1000 views of an ad and you may be getting an override for clickthrough rate. You are getting ripped off because they are showing multiple incidences of the same ad at the same time on the same screen. After a certain point your click through rate is not enhanced by the extra ad views. It just drives users away! The ad serving company is stuffing our screens with the same ad over and over again to meet their contractual obligation for number of views. Overserving ads does not buy you anything. You have to have balance between bandwith, ad views and page content. There are a number of ad serving technologies that can be employed to help out. You can have it so that the ads are only showed to people one time in a set time frame. You can also make it so that once an ad has been clicked on it will not be served to the same user again for a set period of time.
4) I am happy to have an open dialogue but I will still call a spade a spade. Earlier today you were serving too many streaming video ads for the available bandwith.

Everyones opinion counts.
I wasn't directing my comments towards you or any one person in particular. I just always get a kick out of the group of people who complain non-stop about things but do nothing to change it or try to help. I'd like to see everyone here become a supporting member just because, no reason. I know I've saved alot more than $15 just from the info alone on this site. All the smiling faces, friendly comments and the huge paycheck are just a bonus.

Great job!!! Except that's not what it says and chumley never complained. He said he didn't mind it being a little slow. He just didn't care for the intellitext link, which is great because I don't care for it either.
Keep reading my posts and try to understand them. Everyones opinion is wanted but it seems that the loudest complainers are just that, loud. Instead of just complaining, do something about it. A suggestion isn't "this is BS, make it faster".

Well now...this has been an interesting thread to read...everything from yelling at Dbeck because of the massive amounts of traffic to flamming supporting members...
First off I would like to say, I have only recently joined the forums as a supporting member. I see everyone here as equals..I just wanted the hat and stickers....which is basically what the 15 bucks paid for...or whatever the price was.
Second...technically there is no streaming video on this site. It is all Flash...big difference of the two...
Third, if you all knew how much this site is costing to upgrade...I highly doubt any of you would want to pay for it.
Fourth, Dbeck, I am glad you are doing this site and sticking so much money into it. The atv community has beneifited so much because of it.
Which brings me to my next topic...if there wasnt adds...then the industry wouldnt be l looking at this site as much as it does. Sure, other forums may not have adds...but look at how slow they are....and look how much traffic they get. The companies watch this site...whether you care to believe it or not. If you do not want to visit the forums anymore, then I am sorry to hear that...all that will mean is more bandwidth for us to use. But if you stay, that means we will have your knowledge which we can gain from.

Everyones view is welcomed, sometimes more then others. If you are or are not a supporting member, your knowledge is just as usefull and so is your opinions on the way things are going. Look at this as our government...Everyone has a say, the mods will look at what you say and act upon it...weather you are dirt poor or a millionare....wait....that is a bad analogy....I give up...what I am just trying to say is that dont think your input is any less important because you are not a supporting member. As dbeck said, the money you send is basically for the merchandise and shipping...it gives the forums no boost of income.
everyone can complain...and everyone can be listended to and ignored just the same

Just my opinion but what is really sad is the fact that the kawi forum has this B.S. on the front page with more responses than anything else on the front page. When I started coming to this forum a while back it was full of helpful people with a good knowledge base of all thinks kawi. Now unfortunately I have slowly seen it turn into something else. Don't get me wrong for the guys who like to help people and know what they are talking about I give you props. It's just to bad that those guys are not posting as much because people who can't win an arguement with their wife think they need to come on the forum and try to argue. So here's what I propose. If you don't like the site then don't come back on it peroid. If you don't agree with someone that's fine but don't start a 4 or 5 page thread smearing each other. If you want to do that crap then PM each other.I'm not trying to preach because I've done it too. But I don't want this site to become useless to new atv owners or others who have good questions.

The best part of site with "supporting member" types is the high horse they tend to ride on.
The fact is no website is worth a crap if there are no visitors. No visitors means no advertisers, so everyone that visits this site contributes. If features are added that drive away members then that doesn't make the site better, it makes it worse. There is nothing wrong with letting the webmasters know about features that are irritating.

Indeed, "shut up" wasn't the exact quote, but it refers to the dismissal of complaints by those who are not supporting members. I maybe be a civil complainer, but there are other good reasons to dismiss the jackasses besides pointing out that they don't support the site. By saying it to others, it seems implied to the rest of us.
So perhaps it would be less offensive to many if the ranting jackasses weren't dismissed using an excuse that applies to people that aren't acting like a rabid 14 yr old.

You'll feel good about your self and as more people become supporters, the ones that are not supporters will feel guilty and THEY"LL be come supporters.

Hey look, I said it a year ago and it still applies. Being a supporting member doesn't give you the right to dismiss other people's complaints. If you want to dismiss them for real reasons then go big, I don't care.
Posted by: Chumley
If no one is dismissing based on membership status, then why was it even brought up? By pointing out that the complainer isn't a supporting member, you are implying that they should either put up or shut up, which is very similar to dismissing.

How come you dont complain about the commercials on tv, seems from what I have been reading it takes about as long for you to load as a commercial on tv is. Im sure this site is doing all it can to remain a free site, we could all could pay to come here then maybe more bandwidth could be bought.
In my opinion, this is the best site for forums and the best for the ATV community on the web. The only down side to the ads are, theres a Polaris in the 1st ad I see.

Funny how people complain about something they get to use for free. It's those adds that pay for your ability to use it for free. =[

With the plethora of info provided on this site we can put up with a little "slow time".

he didnt say shut up but he's saying if you don't support the forum you can't complain about anything. guess we going to have to send them $5 to give our opinions.

I noticed that when I logged on.I am on a highspeed connection that
should NOT be taking this long to load up every time I click a link on here.
Either the server sucks or it`s the ads and I myself am betting on the ads...

I ain`t complaining..It just gets to be a touch frustrating from time to time.
I understand it`s because of them we get to use these type of discussion
boards for free.I used to staff one of these things. - I just understand how
irritating it is to the users.
It would be alright if they took the biggest paying sponsor and added a banner
at the top or somewhere on the main page that you can see no matter what link
ya click on throughout the site then have listed sponsor links placed somewhere
else on the page wich is easily accesible to users.
I was just agreeing with the fact that the animated ads do tend to slow down
the speed of things as they load when you click a link.
Posted by: offroadxkitten
funny thing about the ads though....they are a bitch depending on the connection the user
has as well...when on dial up it freaking blows cuz of some animated ads....it is a total pain
in the arse...

Our traffic has doubled in the last few months. We're out of bandwidth. Our line maxes out at about 8:00 AM in the morning and it doesn't taper off until late at night.
We have an order placed to double our bandwidth. As soon as they can get another line ran to our office the speed problems will go away.
Oh...and by the way...its those Ads that are paying for the new line so that your speed will be really good again.

hey...how many sponsors do you guys have anyway?

when you open a page and it takes a while open click on the polaris ad and open it and close rightaway the other page opens right up, it seems to be working for me ....Why i dont know

Dial-Up is often the only choice for those of you living in rural areas. Turning of the graphics helps a little and the time you spend waiting for pages to load on Dial-Up is more than off-set by the fact that you don't have to trailer your quad 2 hours out of the city to ride. You can ride straight out of you garage into wide open fields and forests of ATV bliss.
Lifestyle Choice.

Man I love this site. I wouldn't care if it took an hour to load a page. I'd just go have a cup of coffee or something. But, also it's not slow for me whatsoever on cable modem. What it boils down to, is that this site does most of us a huge service, for free! Nobody comes on here like a telemarketer and tries to talk you into supporting, they leave it totally up to you. How anyone could complain because it takes 15 seconds to load a page is beyond me.

i didnt mind the slowness when i had dial-up- you only have to wait for the first topic to load, then before you start reading, open another thread in a new tab, then by the time you're done reading the first one, you can start close it and the second one will be ready for you. --see it's easy to start a dead-end addiction

It is also very slow using the Opera browser as well. I think that the java script could have been executed a little more eloquently. Is I review the site, there appears to be some runtime issues...

I notice that none of you that are complaining are supporting members of the site.
It takes time, work and money to run a site like this. If you want better bandwith, fewer ads or maybe just the kind of ads you like, then spend less than the cost of a new set of grips and become a supporting member.
You'll feel good about your self and as more people become supporters, the ones that are not supporters will feel guilty and THEY"LL be come supporters.
$15.00. I think you all can afford it and you'll be happy with the site.

I don't think any of us are dismissing complaints. Complaints and tough situations make us all better at whatever we do, but I am quoting reality. It takes time and money to run a site like this. Animated ads are what it takes to fund the excellen work that goes on here. If many more supported the site, the need for maximum funding would be lessened.
Just reality.
This is a great site and I hope that supporting members and non-supporting members can continue to enjoy the information here for a long time.

Ads are necessary, I just pointed out one specific one that is really annoying.
I have nothing against the whole 'supporting member' thing, and I never made an accusation that they were given preferential treatment by the staff here. What I pointed out was the tendency of these supporting members to lord their status over others, using it as an excuse whenever a complaint comes up. It's not just this board, it happens on all boards.
I'm in the website business, so I have a pretty good idea what it costs to run this site. Yeh, it's a lot.
So thanks to those responsible for creating and running the site, but no thanks to the people that tell other people to shut up because they aren't a "supporting member".
Hey look, I said it a year ago and it still applies. Being a supporting member doesn't give you the right to dismiss other people's complaints. If you want to dismiss them for real reasons then go big, I don't care.

people who complain are being stupid you guys are doing a great job with this site.yeah by the way there is nothing wrong with the speed.
