Here's a new place I found in Saturdays paper. Sulphur River Trails
sulphurrivertrails.com
I've have not been there yet.

The place in Decatur, TX is Rocky Ridge & not Rocky Ranch. It's about 1hr 30mins from Dallas. There is also a place in Athens, TX. called Pools Cycle Ranch. It's about 1hr 20mins from Dallas. It is a nice place but only has about 6 ride events a year starting in Feb - Sept. There is a place in Jacksonville, TX that hosted the highlifter mud nationals this year, I have not been there. There is another three places in the Kilgore/Longview area. Think their names are gator run, rabbit creek or run & can't remember the other. Shiloh Ridge is in Alto, TX about 2hrs 30mins from Dallas. There is also a place in Gilmer, TX. If your in the Dallas area you have to travel to ride

1) When you say you can "camp and ride at Lake Murray", does that mean you can actually camp somewhere close to the riding trails? Can you ride your ATV from your campsite to the trails and back?
2) If "Yes" to question 1) are the campsites RV type campsites with water and electricity?
3) If "No" to question 1) how far is it from the RV campsites to the trails. Does it require a second vehicle just to pull the "Dirt Toy Trailer" to the the trail head?
Again... I just want to have an idea of what to expect before going up there.
Thanks!
#1.) Yes
#2.) Yes 20 or so are RV style with water, electric & concrete pads.
#3.) See questions 1 & 2

Good luck, that's one of the reasons why I moved, you have to drive so far. There is a fun place in Decatur to ride, called Rocky Ranch if I remember right.
Posted by: Scootergptx
Lake Grapevine is the closest, but not what I would call a great place. Lake Murray is the wife's favorite (bathrooms and showers). Try this link, it's got a few sites. Texas trails
Some of the places in East Texas are ORV parks as well. Have to watch out for the tire ruts

Get a toy hauler and go on some weekend rides. Better yet, buy my rv so I can buy a toy hauler.

It is nice to be able to wash off the first layer of dirt before taking a shower in the rv.
Seems like there was a place in Eufalla, OK just north of the lake. Haven't been there but have seen some info on it on the net.

If you haven't been to Lake Murray yet, they now have a big sign (brown wood, like all stateparks seem to use) where you are supposed to turn right off of 70. It's also one of the places you can find to camp in the dark. All spots have concrete drives, picnic tables and grills. Some have water and electric, but those are taken on first come first serve basis.

There are not too may places to ride close to DFW but like mentioned before, atvpathfinder.com has alot of listings.
Barbara, where on the lake did you get property? I grew up in Kemp and go downt there and too Athens all the time too ride.
Posted by: JeffGordonHater
Awesome, there is alot of deer in those bottoms off the spillway. I drove through Tool and Trinidad the other day going to Corsiscana, that whole area has doubled in size since I left there, but it is still home. I am going down in a couple of weeks to do some riding if anyone is interested in getting together to ride.

Change of plans, looks like the gang from Dallas is going to come up here and we are all going to Little Sahara to tear up the dunes. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will show yall a little Oklahoma hospitality(I leared in Texas).
Steve

Are they going to be there this weekend? If so I will be on the lookout for the banshee you described. It is spring break for about 3/4 of Oklahoma so it is going to be pretty busy.

Barbara, there are a couple of places in the Longview/Marshall area of Texas - if that isn't too far for you.

My family likes to ride ATV's and we are looking for places to ride in the DFW Texas area. Legal places , Anyone know some good spots for Family play?
Posted by: Barbara
Thank you, We go to Meunster & Lake Murray. They are the closest legal places to us that we like. We also go to Waynoka Ok. to Little Sahara State Park about 2 times a year & we love the dunes but it takes us forever to get there. We have not been to Decatur to ride.
Posted by: Barbara
Yes we used to go to Grapevine, Marshall Creek too before they shut off half the trails. They really messed it up. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.
Posted by: Barbara
Thank you for the information & web site. I will check it out. We are always glad to hear about new places to ride.
Posted by: Barbara
Thank you for the information, We are in the Athens area a lot as we have a place on Cedar Creek Lake. I see all kinds of four wheelers on trailers going down 175 but always wonder where they are going to ride. We have visited a couple of the places you have mentioned. I really would like to find places like Lake Murray where you can camp & ride. Since we have been to the dunes not much around here is very fun anymore. We all need to write to the city officials I guess & let them know how much we need places to ride around here. They just want to put cement on top of all the ground around here.
Posted by: Barbara
I have figured out I will have to travel to ride. I have seen the advertisements for some of the places in Longview on the internet. We may have to visit that one soon. Thank you for the information.
Posted by: Barbara
We have a 35 ft toy hauler. Love it, Makes camping a breeze.
Posted by: Barbara
We almost went this past weekend, Went right past it though to visit a friend in Edmond Ok.

Thanks for the information on these new sites. I like Murray just because you can camp there & ride. Also it is one of the closest places for us to go. I prefer the dunes but none of them around here very close.
Posted by: Barbara
Thank you for that web site. I also found the following site last night that tells you a lot of places. http://www.atvonlinemagazine.com/places_to_ride/texas.html
Posted by: Barbara
Thanks for that site. We have a place at Cedar Creek & we always see ATV's heading that direction as we travel on 175 towards the lake. That may be where they are heading. I really do not like the mud that much but I love trails. I guess that is why I like the dunes so much, you stay cleaner. I guess that is a Female thing. LOL

Yes you can camp & ride at this park. You will be able to ride the ATV to the entrance gate from your camp site. There are a few State Parks in this area but the one for atv's will allow you to ride directly to the gate from the camp site. Check out this web site for more http://www.travelok.com/atv/off-road.asp . Whne we were there last was over a year ago, but they were in the process of adding more camp sites with hook-ups. We lucked into a good spot when we went but we got there early for the weekend.
The Pear Orchard Motorcycle Use Area, on the northwest side of the lake, was developed by the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department for motorcycles and ATVs. About ten miles of marked trails cross grassland, forest and rolling hills.
Take Hwy 35 to Ardmore, OK. Exit on Hwy. 70 going East. Travel approximately 5 miles. Turn right at the road with a statue of a golden colored horse. Take the first turn to the right.
Park Permit Required

I copied & pasted the directions from the web site, I hope they are right. I do know that the horse statue will be on the left(North) side of the highway and you will have to turn to the right(South) on the road across the highway from the horse statue. You will not be turning beside the horse statue but across the highway from it. I hope this has not confused you. It really is not that hard to find. Hope you enjoy your trip. We need to go again soon. We have not gone riding in a while due to jobs, but hope to get the quads out soon. The camp sites are really nice there and kind of secluded from the person next to you, and most are shaded by trees. Don't expect to have a camp fire though, I hear there is a burn ban going on now & you can not even have small fires in the fire rings. If you are just going for the day they have a parking lot for you to park in & they have a restroom & shower there. If you have children there is a small playground area for them too.
Posted by: Barbara
OK, Good luck, I hear the weather will be perfect Saturday for riding. Up in the 70's.
Posted by: Barbara
Thanks for the site. I checked it out, It looks very helpful. Have you tried out any of those places?
Posted by: Barbara
I am glad you had a good time there. I wanted to go myself but we went East instead. Some of my family bought 100 acres near Cedar Creek Lake & we rode our four wheelers on their property trying to make some trails. I hope to go back to Lake Murray soon though.
Posted by: Barbara
I was not impressed with Marshall Creek either. It is way too crowded & too small now that they closed off half the trails. I like Lake Murray & Muenster Tx . They are the closest decent trails around here that I know of.
Posted by: Barbara
It is off 274 south of the spillway. It is close to highway 31. the east side of 274.
Posted by: Barbara
Where will you be riding? We were planning to go up that way this coming weekend because our Family has a lake house we like to go to. Not sure we will even take the four wheelers. I have seen deer up that way as well. The only thing we saw when we rode was a coyote. It was on some adjoining property. Ours is not too wooded. I think the man that used to own it kept it plowed. It was real rough. There are a few horses & Llamas on it too & the Llamas keep all the wildlife away. There is one pond that has some trees around it & the neighbor has seen some deer crossing the property before we bought it. We have considered moving out that direction. We love it up there. It is growing alot though like you said. In the summer we are up there almost every weekend.

I hear they are having some kind of spring break thing going on. My daughter & her boyfriend plan to go. We have a friend from Oklahoma that has a Longtravel Dune buggy & they plan to meet him up there. She is 23 & has long blonde hair is tall & skinny & She rides a Blue Banshee with lots of chrome & aftermarket racing stuff on it. It says Bluezilla on the fenders. If you see her give her a hard time. LOL Our friend also has a Rhino he is tricking out. Not sure if he will have it or not. He had it in the shop the last time I talked to him getting it all fixed up. I guess we will see it at Snake hunt when we plan to go. Have fun if you get to go.
Posted by: Barbara
That was their plans as of Monday, to go 3/10/06 for the weekend. Not sure where they plan to camp, they usually try to get the pavillian area by the gate to the dunes.
Posted by: Barbara
Thanks for the information. We are always looking for closer places to ride. I have been to Murray but not the other two. I guess you have probably been to Meunster too. ( I think I misspelled it) Anyway it is fun. I like riding through the red river there. It also has some pretty sandy places for good drag racing. I think just about any type of terrain you like to ride on is there. They do not have any type of camping facilities but you can camp there too if you make arrangements with the owner.
Posted by: Barbara
You probably have all the good sand dunes near you. That is what I like.
Posted by: GALLATINrider
A good place to which is about 2hr. form dallas is mud creek which is where the mud nationals are going to held next year and was held last year. They have alot of good trails and alot good mud spots its alot of fun and they have a few hills. you can also camp if you want too. its in Jacksonvill ,Tx

Barbara,
Thanks for all the great info. Just one last clarification.
When I look at the park map it shows the ATV/MOTORCYCLE use area on the northeast side of the lake (see Lake Murray Map), but in your description, you indicate the northwest side of the lake. Has the ATV area moved as part of the improvements they've made? Or is the map just wrong?
Hate to be a pest, but many times we head out on a Friday after work. By the time we get there we're fishing around in the dark trying to find the location. The more info I can collect in the light of day, the less fishing in the dark I'll have to do later!
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Barabra,
Thanks,
Based on your latest directions and looking at MS Streets & Trips I think I have it figure out.

Went to Lake Murray over the Christmas Holidays.... Barbara you were right. This is a great place to go if you like to RV Camp and ride. Emphasis on RV Camping. I can tell that this state park has gone out of their way to caiter to campers who like to ride dirt toys. The sites have nice level concrete pads, many with full hookups and long pull throughs.
The riding was pretty good with enough area to keep you entertained for several days. Yes we rode the same trails more than once, but one day my son and I rode 31 miles, and we didn't cover every trail there.
Being less than 2 hours from my house, we'll definately be going back.
The golden horse across the road, and the large brown wooden sign that said "Lake Murray ATV Area", made the place impossible to miss.

Bulcher still exsits.. its out there by that catfish place right? you park on the side of the road if i recall

OMG!! People in the Dallas area that ride! There were some trails off of Lebanon and 4th Army in Frisco but they werent legal and got all gated up.
We have only riden there and have started looking for decent places. My brother-in-law and sister were not impressed with Marshall Creek at all.
Posted by: DeanH
I grew up in Gainesville and used to ride all over the place there. I loved Lake Murray and Rocky Ridge. We would also ride a lot at Bulcher. I don't know if the place even exists still, but it's worth looking into if you're still looking for places.
Posted by: DeanH
Actually, I was looking around online to find out exactly where Bulcher is so I could give you more info. People call it Muenster, St. Joe and Bulcher (in just a couple of things I found). Your description is how I would describe Bulcher. I loved riding on the river. I'm a little fuzzy on details because I haven't been there in a little over 10 years.
When I used to go to Rocky Ridge Recreational Ranch (Decatur), you could camp pretty much anywhere you wanted. There were a few tracks and tons of trails. There were a couple of stock ponds and a really big reservoir. Again, I haven't been there in long time, so it may not exist anymore. I really miss having places like that to ride. Damn desert!
