Thanks 420. My boss lives in Mt Airy and he is going to get a Raptor. I will tell him of the places you named and we are going to check it out. I keep hearing that Tower City trails are pretty advanced. Is this true? the reason I ask is I want to take my 7 year old son to actually get out and enjoy some nature but I dont want him to be so challenged that it isnt fun. any good trails just to cruise thru the woods and enjoy the scenery?

Posted by: burkie1857

megan, that would be great if you could do that. we are goingto try and go somewhere next weekend. going thursday to Romney cycles in W Va to get my Raptor 700 and my sons Raptor 50. I am actually going with two guys from work and we are picking up 3 raptor 700's. I couldnt beleive how much cheaper they were than some local places.

LOVIN- we will have to get together and do some riding here soon. this thread is great.

Posted by: burkie1857

i am going to work the dealer here a bit and see what they will do. also found a big place in hanover that i may be able to contact. my big thing is if I can get away without paying sales tax i am going to do it. the state gets enough of my money as it is.

Posted by: burkie1857

Lovin- i am getting it for 6320 out the door. i talked to ellicott city and they gave me the same price of 7100 out the door. i am willing to drive 2 hours to save 800 bucks and being as we are buying 3 of them that will add up to alot.

420pimp- thanks for the info. i am going to print that off and hopefully get there next sunday. should be getting my raptor this coming thursday. has anyone had any dealing with Ray Wilt Superstore in Hanover? they have a used one for my son that i am thinking of buying.

Posted by: burkie1857

yes it is romney cycles in WV. we are going up thursday to ge them.

Posted by: burkie1857

lovin- we are going thursday to get ours. i have to work saturday but i am deifinetely riding with ym son somewhere sunday. i may go down to southern md ATV park.i talked to the guy yesterday and all the stuff i am reading is great. has anyone ridden there yet? if so did you like it and how kid friendly was the riding?

Posted by: burkie1857

420- i have not had the chance to get out there yet but i will. i think i am goingto try to find somewhere to ride up near romney and get it broke in a bit for sunday.

lovin- if you buy a one pay membership for 60 bucks then it is only 30 bucks each time you ride. i think it is worth it. i paid 40 a pop to go to the landing in easton and it only has tracks which is cool but the trail thing will be more fun for the kid plus safer for me being that i think i am invincible and i clearly am not...haha.

anyone have any comments on a first time quad for the wife. she is jealous that me and the boy are getting them and she will be left in the dust..literally.. we were looking tonight and i am thinking either the raptor 350 or maybe even the suzuki z250. the sales guy kept going toward the z400 but i think that maybe too much for her. i think she may be partial to that one because there is no clutch. any thoughts would be great.

Posted by: burkie1857

thanks for all the great comments and suggestions guys. i think i am going to go with Megan's choice. the honda seems like a great quad and i think the power will be plenty. if she gets too advanced for it then i will move her but i kind of doubt she will. but ive been wrong before and this may not be the last time. i think she is going to be of the cruising around type rider. i know she wont be doing any jumps or anything. going tomorrow and cant wait.

Posted by: burkie1857

i poseted on the other thread. we picked up the machines yesterday and found a cool place to ride. I found the place you were talking about 420. everyone had a blast. didnt get to ride that long but it was still fun. we are going to the ATV park near budds creek sunday. i think that will be the best place for my wife and son to get used to the machines.

Posted by: burkie1857

pimp- i didnt go to the park and ride because it was so full. i found a little acces road and went in there. rode up past the park and ride and around the water tower and just cruised around in there a little. i ahd my wife and son with so we did not stay long. i went to southern atv today and we had a blast. the people there are so nice. it was good that the weather forecast was scethcy because it wasnt too crowded. i am pretty sure that we are going next sunday before the superbowl.

Posted by: burkie1857

the pits are in laurel,md. just off exit 33a on 95.

Posted by: Nosdog2

Looks like there are a lot of MD's here! Well add one more, I live in AA county. Just got my quad in Oct, and been riding the heck out of it. I have a couple of friends that ride out in Sterling, VA on Sundays that are nice. Excelent riding, lots of trails, but if you don't like water don't go!

I will have to check some of these places that you guys are talking about out, maybe a get together or something! Roadtrip!

tower hill is fun but am interested in marley pits as well. can you help with best place to park and unload or best point of entry. I did not see anywhere to pull over and park on marley rd. thanks.

Posted by: sat4314

BPIPES,

I can get to CSX tracks near Lums Road if you can steer me from there. Looking on Google Earth I see a large area just off 40 between Ephreta and Marley on the north side of 40. Is that it? Also have you ever rode up on top of the levy in Chesapeake? Thanks for your help and look forward to riding with you sometime. Just getting in to it so I'm trying to stay local as much as possible.

Posted by: sat4314

any saturday would be good for riding the levy. hit me up with a private message when you plan to ride. rode tower hill trails saturday and sunday with some friends and had a blast in the mud bogs

Posted by: sat4314

We had my wifes Polaris Predator on Sunday. I ride a Kawasaki but we dont have trailer yet to bring both. Planning on riding Friday mid-day, probably just me. I like hitting the trails mostly and am still breaking the Kawasaki in to use for plowing snow in the driveway this winter. Probably will be buying a dual sport before summer is over. Do you ever ride the pits? If so cam you send private message on does and donts? Thanks...............

Posted by: sat4314

Has anyone been there since this encounter with the police? There are two other spots to easily enter the trails. I ran into the superintendent of the job who told us that he rides also and is emphathetic to us wanting to ride. The problem he has are the loud pipes and three guys fron Delaware who have shown no courtesy towards the home owners who live on the fringes of the area. I have personally watched them come roaring out of land that is clearly marked no trespassing. There are plenty of trails there without having to encroach on the private land of those who live there. We rode trails off the tracks last weekend and had a blast and plan to ride the canal in Chesapeake City next weekend. I will see what I can find out about tower hill, but we have pretty much wore that place out.

Posted by: sat4314

I figured it was an isolated incident. Police do not get paid to patrol private property. I plan to ride there next Saturday morning. There will be 4 of us and it will probably be the last ride there this year. Does anyone ride the top of the canal at Chesapeake City? Why don't we all ride tower hill on Saturday? If we get told to leave we can always go to the trails off the tracks.

Posted by: sat4314

Tower Hill is basically off limits now. The state police are patrolling it as well as DNR police. Tickets are being issued.

Posted by: sat4314

Hey Higgy,

Shoot me an email to fowler1994@gmail.com and I'll fill you in on some of our local stuff. Always glad to help out a fellow vet. A few of us are riding this Saturday morning and you are welcome to join us.

Posted by: sat4314

I rode here for a long time but have steered clear for several weeks since the weekend the state cops were there. Anyone been there recently? If so did cops or DNR come by? Were there still piles of nails at the trail heads? How about Marley pits or the tracks? Anyone riding? We've been going to West Virginia lately but I miss riding locally.

Posted by: sat4314

Lovinmyraptor: I mentioned West Virginia but it is actually Gore, Va. I was raised not far away and I tend to just say West Va since the state line is so close to the Cove. Loosenuts, myself and a couple others were up on superbowl weekend and rode for two days. We're not to thrilled with all the rocks on the blue trail, but otherwise had a pretty good time.

We're riding again in March if we can get the trip organized. With the snow and ice it should be fun in 4 wheel drive. Then probably the following week or two we'll be going to join Tower City. With you being in Westminister, you're alot closer to the cove than we are. I'm in Cecil county and it's a three hour drive from here. Do you have any local spots in your area that are hassle free? We have one that is pretty nice and great trails, but it's not entirely legal but for the most part the cops do not bother you. It's only 10 minutes from us so if we are asked to leave it's not that big of a deal. PM loosenuts and myself if you have a spot. The cove is a great spot if you have 4 wheel drive but a couple sport riders in our group had problems navigating all the rocks. Loosenuts will be breaking in his new Renegade and I will be close behind on my 4x4 Cat.

There is also a trail just outside of Paw Paw that alot of the locals ride. It runs from Paw Paw to Hancock but again it's a long drive. We're probably going to be spending most of our time at Tower City and you are welcome to hook up with us. I would also like to get down to Hatfield but that is going to have to be at least a 4 day weekend to allow time to enjoy the trails there.

Where are some of the spots that you like the most? PM us.

Were you parked on the Shady Beach side? What type of citation? Trespassing? Was anyone else riding besides you? There is a state trooper who lives on Elk Neck Rd and he may be moonlighting for the home owners on the fringe of the property. They are still hung up waiting on building permits for at least another year and I can't imagine they will patrol it that long. As soon as the weather is warm they'll be hard pressed trying to chase everyone down since there are several areas to enter it from. I know the trails in there like the back of my hand and there are alot of easy "escapes". Too bad about your citation. Let us know the details and stay safe.

Posted by: sat4314

Sorry to hear about that. I'm a local as well and it seems we have finally lost what used to be a great area to ride. We ride a place in Gore, Va called the Cove sometimes and will be spending alot of time at Tower City. Both are a two hour drive which sucks but it beats having to deal with the cops. Ever since last summer when 50 or more riders started showing up I knew the days were numbered. I'm a little confused about them saying it was state property, but the fringe on that side is part of the state park so perhaps thats why. The main area off Shady is owned by a developer or did it all get sold back to the state? You are welcome to join us at Tower City. We are heading up a week from Saturday for a day trip. Stay safe.

Posted by: sat4314

It's hit or miss there. I have rode there twice in the last few days and not been bothered. Parked on the Shady Beach side and each ride was on a weekday. I guess the home owners are at work and not home to hear the noise and complain as they do on the weekends. I did stay away from the state forest area on the trail to Elk Neck Rd. and had no problems. There were 7 of us riding and we had a blast.

Posted by: sat4314

I am not going to advertise time of day to draw attention. I did ride again today for 3 1/2 hrs and didn't see another soul. Other than it being cold and had to take it a little easy it was a good ride. I went to the top of the tower a couple times and spent some time on the overlook hills. I did not run the trail to Irishtown or Elk Neck Rd. So again it seems like weekdays are semi safe and I have not had a problem yet. I think the key is to stay clear of the trail that borders the state park and the private homes.

Someone told my wife about a place near Port Deposit to ride. Does anyone know that area? I think it was off of Red Toad Road.

We are looking for a trailer to haul our ATV's out to western Md and Up to PA. What kind of trailer is everyone using to haul their ATV's on? Did you get it from a MD dealer? We are taking a trip today to Performance Trailer in DE today to look at what they have.

Thanks,
Jeff

Posted by: jeff7457

Bpipes:

Haven't been there yet! We have been trying to locate a trailer. There are alot of options and we are going to wait until after the hollidays to pick up a trailer. I could toss an ATV in the back of the truck and check that area out but I couldn't go without my son.

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

well, i hooked up with some guys and met to ride tower hill, what a great place to ride, kind of reminds me of a mix between sugar hill and port elizabeth nj, that i used to ride, dirt, mudd, san, loose dirt, hill climbs, trails wide enough to pass, and jumps, whoops, mud pits all of the good stuff that makes our sport so nice...... will definately be goin back to ride again...........

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

yeah there was, but there was about 8 of us and nobody got a flat,we r gonna go again this weekend....c-ya there.........

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

like the heading of the topic says, it is in cecil county md,off rt 40

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

well that strange white ford appeared yesterday, didn't get caught but some people that were parked in front were confronted...they were on dirtbikes and we watched them.. we figured the white ford went to the other entrance and was lookin for us cause he saw a couple of us go into the woods. has anyone gotten tickets/inpounded there yet? there was 8 of us out there and we were all worried that we were gonna get tickets. there was a kid there yesterday that told us that a white for expedition came in there and was doin doughnuts, they all went over to check him out and it was a cop and started writing tickets?? does anyone know about that??

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

well the white ford in question was an exhibition and it came in, stopped at some people ridin dirtbikes in front and the next thing i knew the white truck left and so did the people ridin.... i watched the whole thing from the woods....

Posted by: loosenutzzzz

i was in tower hill, comin out of the trails near the house, when i seen a bunch of guys shootin into the woods,i asked what they were doin and they showed me once we got out of sight

Hey Buka, We mainly ride in western MD and West by God Va, but I would like to ride sometimes closer to home, I live in Hampstead, MD not far from New Freedom. I would like to see your place's to ride and bring some friends. Outback31

Hi all,
Brand new to the site, recently moved back to cecil county after being in the Air Force and stationed in Tacoma, Washington. I brought my 400ex back with me. Out there you pay $12 bucks a year to the vehicle liscensing agency and register your quad or bike, and that allows you to be legal to ride on state land. Riding areas are plentiful, most of wich are in state parks, and state forests. I was suprised to find out that legal areas around here are few and far between. However, the friends I rode dirt bikes with as a kid either don't ride anymore, or aren't around. So just want to network and ride if anybody is riding locally, or planning a trip. Ihavent found the trails by the RR tracks in North east yet, if anyone rides there anymore. look forward to conversing.

Happy New Year!
Higgy

Great site, just found it. I live in Elkton and seems like its tough finding places to ride. I am new to riding and just bought a ltz 400. Well hope to see some of you around sometime. Hoping to make a trip to WV soon, I hear there some great riding out there

Posted by: VWP525

loose, you get that new ride yet?

Posted by: cc300Rcc

rode over towards tower hill last sunday when the weather was nice... i've ridden there for years and had heard about the crack down. i hadn't been out since last fall and it warmed up so i decided to see what the trails were like. i didn't even make it a mile down the trail and i get stopped by two cops riding atvs in street clothes. i didn't get a warning or anything. he wrote me a citation onsite and now i have a court date. so much for this great riding place.

i've heard people say they are just cracking down now and soon everyone will be riding there again... but i don't know what to believe. i thought for sure if i got stopped i would at least get a warning or something.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

there were two cops on honda quads. i know these trails as well as anyone... i've been riding there for years and i am local... i ride on and off the property from my property. the citation didn't involve a fine. i just have to go to court and the cop told me i probably would get probation before judgement, but it is still a pain.

i was riding on the single track from the elk neck rd entrance to the pits that is in the woods behind the horse farm. right before i came out onto the pit road they were coming the opposite way and they both blocked the trail... while there are lots of "escapes" i didn't have anywhere to go. the citation was for operating an off road vehicle on state property. anyone else gotten a citation, besides me? the cops made it sound like they wrote a million of those things.

i could probably ride there again, but i am not willing to take the risk. if i got caught riding there again and got another citation i would be in bad shape. i have about 40 acres between myself and another private landowner that i can ride on anyway. the terrain is not quite as much fun, but oh well.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

there is a strip of state owned property directly behind the horse farm. it is only about 40 acres of land. it makes me wonder if that is why they cited me. maybe they can't enforce anything on the other land that is owned by the developed d.r. horton.

i'm looking into tower city... i am not real big on the $300 membership fee, but i have heard great things about it. if i only ride there a few times a year it doesn't seem worth the investment. everyone is talking about this 8 bees place near paragon that is supposed to be really great and that is apparently only $25 a day.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

that sounds like a pretty fair price... how is the terrain bpipes? is it really dusty coal piles and stuff like that? is there any kind of trail system? i'll have to check that out. do you know if there is a limited number of permits for 2007?

if the trails aren't that good you can always visit the yuengling brewery.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

i was driving home on old elk neck road on saturday afternoon and followed a DNR cop most the way. he drove by the elk neck rd entrance to the pits and saw some people riding in the first main pit you can see from the road. sure enough he pulled in and put and end to that.

steer clear of this area... the cops are all over it.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

really??? i guess it is the weekends are the main time they patrol it so closely... what time of the day are you riding during the week? i could easily ride there during the week, but i am not willing to risk getting caught again.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

where in north east did you find a spot? i heard people riding yesterday, i live near tower hill and it sounded like there were people out. i haven't been back since i got a ticket. they blocked the shady beach rd entrance with concrete barriers. i don't know if that is discouraging anyone or not.

so what is this spot like? lemme know.

Posted by: cc300Rcc

were there guys parked there with the entrance blocked?? how did you get on the trails? TE450 sounds nice. my klx300r would need a kit in order to be street legal. i've thought about doing it a couple times.

Posted by: tweekin450

hey everyone i just got my new 07' honda trx450er i want to go out riding but hate riding alone . I live right on nottingham rd. near the marley sand pits. i use to ride back their awhile back but do to haveing a really old quad and discontinued parts have kept me from riding . i was wondering if you guys get messed with about being back their at all . i know i use to but i always rode their threw the cable trail which leads up to it . so if anyone is planning on riding anytime soon get back to me i would love to meet up with some people and ride and maybe learn of some new places that arn't 2 1/2 hours away. well thanks
