Better to be stuck by your truck in the rain than at work like me...

Thanks Much,

I just moved to Portland from SLC last spring myself. I haven't made it out too many trips unfortunately, but here's what i've learned so far...
1) Sand Lake = Knolls. It's fun but it gets boring fast...
2) The rain isn't really that bad, becuse it usually isn't that cold.
3) I've NOT found Dunes the size of those in Little Sahara.
4) "Tree shooting" doesn't involve firearms. It reminds me of snowmobiling. A lot of digging out and turning around.
5) There are trees in the dunes here! You won't BELIEVE how much that changes the riding. It's almost its' own learning curve. I was BEAT after my first real riding days. 2fun was laughing at me the whole time...

Posted by: 2fun

I guess I'll throw my name in the hat here too.
I'd be down for some group rides this spring break, and summer!!

Hope to hook up with you guys this summer though!
Just got my extended swingarm installed, and took it down to Winchester. That thing works like a charm! Front end stays down now, even when taking my girlfriend up Banshee hill on the back of the YFZ in 2nd!

I have no idea.

I usually avoid Sand Lake due to the small area, over abundance of people, and high % of irresponsible riders. Maybe it is just intensified because of the small area, but I haven't been there for at least 2-3 years.

Winchester and Florence are the main places I prefer to go.

Bunch of new stuff going on there?? I have not been keeping up to date on that area.

For me, it is the difference between a 2 hour drive to Sand Lake, or a 4 1/2 hour drive to Florence. For a day trip, Florence isn't an option.

Understandable. BR>Sand Lake is indeed a good place to go for tuning and so forth.
I appologize if my post came off snotty. That was not my intention.
It is definately a lot longer drive to Winchester/Florence.

What mods have you done to the 700? I have always wanted to try one of those out (along with a Predator and Z400), but no-one in my immediate riding group owns any of these.

That would be awesome to try out all three at once!! LOL!BR>I won't have the time to go for quite some time due to school restraints, but I will keep this in mind, and yeah, just respond to this thread, or shoot me an E-mail next time you go. I'd really like to try those out!!

When I graduate from Pharmacy school, I may wind up getting a couple of different breeds to ride for family and friends.

I will have to try later this summer.
I get out of school June 9th, and will have 3 days to prepare for the trip to St. Anthony (June 13-17th), then come back and immediately have to pack up my stuff and head to LaGrande for my first 6 week block of rotations. BR>
I should be back in town mid July though. Perhaps then sometime??

They are all good! CoosBay is awesome too!
Winchester has to be my favorite, but I have been up and down every nook, cranny, tree-shot, hole-shot, and everything in between!
We usually ride the entire Winchester area on a Sat, and then cruise the Florence area the next day for a few hours before packing up and heading home.

No, actually, it is at WinchesterBay.
More going on than what you described, but the drags are a big part of it for sure!

I've never gone simply because I hate large crowds, no places to stay, high admission fees, and cramped riding areas.

TRUST me.......
I'd LOVE to make it!
Just depends on if I can get back in time from the LaGrande rotation.
However, after that, I should be available to ride more often than in the past. I will be doing rotations all summer and next year, but should be able to squeeze a weekend in now and then!! BR>
Look forward to meeting you guys this (late) summer.

Soooooo...................................
Who likes tree-shots and idiot holes???????

Posted by: 2fun

I'd love to show you guys the idiot holes I frequent. Sounds like you've gone down most of them though??

You lost me on the "dune grass rides"?? Is that kind of like the sidehilling shot of me on the 250R?? If so, I like those too!

Yeah, I saw that. And your description of the "grass" rides makes sense nowBR>
There are also "grass" rides as you described except you are sidehilling above the treeline and then try to "cut a 90 degree" and go straight up the hill. Those are pretty hard in the places we do them. Even for the built 250R and YFZ (both extended swingarms to boot)

Well, just got back from a day trip to Florence (all day Sat.)
Was helping a friend break in his and his father-in-laws KFX700's.

I have to say, those things were pretty fun! Soaked up the whoops a lot better than I thought they would! I was even able to get a few wheelies going!

Even in stock form, those KFX700's do pretty well! We were taking quite a few treeshots without much trouble!

Anyways, I am sore today, and willl be recuperating for the next couple of days no doubt!

Well, looks like we will not be going to Winchester and Florence this coming weekend after all.BR>He hurt his shoulder a couple of weeks ago at Sand Lake when he flipped his Raptor 700 over on himself coming out of one of the treeshots. Additionally, it looks like a lot of rain down there this weekend, so due to the combo we cancelled and re-scheduled for April 15-16th for Winchester and Florence.

Maybe we will some some of you peeps there??

What will everybody be driving/riding??

I will be there (weather permitting) in a white 93 Nissan pickup pulling a black 2-place quad trailer.

If all works out, maybe we could go on a couple of rides together Sat! BR>

We will be coming back the following Sat, so hopefully some time after that later this summer we can hook up for another ride! Last time was pretty fun, and I really enjoyed riding with you and Bear! Anyone else interested in going is more than welcome!

Sand Lake is about 2 hours out of Portland. About 20 mins South of Tillamook.

I usually don't go there though due to its being so small, and crowded!!

Winchester Bay and Florence are my favorites. Definately worth the drive South if you are looking into a decent sized area!!!

Family and friends, tt the dunes. It kinda works, got the wife to buy it anyway.

I haven't done much riding, had knee surgery in May. This will be my frist time back ont he 450, since the wipe out. I tried starting it a few weeks ago. That works, so I must ride.

No other rides down there, that I am aware of. Presidents day at Sand Lake.

So far at Horsfall we have sites 3-6 with another one of us going to get #7. Also was mention of someone possibly getting 1&2.

Just an update on the PSAR trip in April.
There are about a dozen of us heading to Honeyman State park on the 7th (Sat.) We are staying there until Wed. AM (11th) One of our group has an extra spot to sell for those days, otherwise the campground is booked full!

On the morning of the 11th we are heading to Winchester for a day ride and then on down to Horsfall campground to stay until Sunday the 15th.
So far the PSAR group has sites 1- 10 and 12 & 14 reserved, with only sites 11, 13, 15 & 16 available on this side of the campground (before you get to the bathrooms).
Make your reservation now and join the fun!

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun!!

Hit me up if anyones looking to ride or msg me with the good area's and any advice you might have..

Sand Lake:
Good for a day trip or so. Not too much technical riding unless you really look for it.
You CAN ride on the beach there.
Pretty small compared to the other Oregon dunes
Usually pretty crowded since it is so small and is the closest set of dunes to the Portland metro area.

Florence:
A large dune area with lots of varied terrain from trails to open duning to hill shoots/treeshots and beach riding too!
Not as crowded due to the vast area of dunes.
One of my favorites.

Winchester Bay:
Not as big as Florence, but still way bigger than Sand Lake.
Lots of open duning, and also a lot of technical hill climbs and steep dunes. Many tall dunes found here, along with the imfamous "Banshee hill".
It is about 1/2 hour south of Florence.
You CANNOT ride the beach here.

Coos Bay:
More area than Winchester with lots of open duning and trails. A few tree shots mixed in.
This is a bit farther south than Florence and Winchester, so I don't frequent it as often as the other two.
It is about 1/2 hour South of Winchester Bay, and 1 hour South of Florence.
You CAN ride the beach here.

Hope this helps!!

Also, there are always trips being planned for differen't weekends and weeks especially during the summer months!

You came to the right place to hook up with people for dune rides!!

Still here bear....

Just got back from a three day weekend at Horsefall (CoosBay).

Weather was great, and the sand was awesome too!

Jones Creek opened up on May 1st. I was there the first weekend of April thinking it was open, but the BLM "cop" pulled up alongside me and gave me a lecture about how people like me get places like Jones Creek closed down. I told her that I was the president of a local ATV club with over 100 members, and that it was my understanding that Jones Creek always opened on April first. She said that it had changed this year. Evidently they can only have it open for 6 months/year. Last year they kept it open an extra month, so they had to delay opening it up another month. Anyway...there were no signs posted except on the bulletin board with the map (which I don't use, because I don't need a map there anymore). So...to make a long story short...IT'S OPEN!!! Oh...and I never actually got my quad out of the back of my truck that day.

If you guys want to hook up with local riders, check out my club site and message boards. The link is in my signature.

NW Quadriders club will be meeting at Florence on the 27th (Sunday) of June. We'll be staging out of Goose Pasture parking lot, and I think having a short meeting around 10:00 followed by a lot of riding. It's looking like we'll get a decent group out there.

Ofc is a little guy on a big quad. He's trying his best and is gettin good. It was really fun hitting that jump 3 wide but we were getting pretty close to each other. That was my first trip to Florence, and I think I like it better then any other sop along the Oregon coast.

I found this thread laying on the bottom of the second page. I am dissapointed.

We did 4 days at Coos bay. It rain just about non stop except Saturday, that was almost t shirt weather. We were able to ride to spinreel and out to the beach and back, without a rain drop.

I finally went into a hole I couldn't get out of, without help. My brother took me to it and said only skinny guys on 700's could make it. I dropped down in and was thinking crap I can't see the bottom yet. Turned around and got about a quad from the first level bench. Tried 3 more time to same spot each try. It took 4 of us to drag it that last quad length. Atleast I have finally found a challenge, I guess.

That hole was backed to the tracks and the swampy area, about a half mile north of boxcar. Alot of easy ones around it, but that one was bad.

The family is great. The baby is walking around and about to hit 11 months old. Time flys, when you stop paying attention.

Is anyone going to be around Florence at the end of the month?

We are going to be there from June 24th thru July 2nd, at Driftwood.

We will probably make a run to Winchester Bay some time during the week. Can't stand to be that close to those big dunes and not hit them.

Posted by: RPM

Bigdaddy660R,

Where exactly is Spinreel? I have heard people talk about it, but to tell you the truth, I have no idea where it is located. How is the riding there? Big Hills, Trails, ???

DSXBEAR

We are actually leaving on the 2nd, but we will probably get our last "Dune Fix" ride in before we head for home. We will be in #8 & #10. I will be sure and at least say hello.

Posted by: RPM

We are taking off for Florence at 1:00 on Thursday (The 24th) and will be there until July 2nd, at Driftwood. Hope to hook up with some of you. You can't miss my BIG Green 700, it has a Kawie Green Kawasaki flag on the wip, and has a big RPM on the front fender.

Posted by: RPM

Has anyone been to Sand Lake recently? What I am wanting to know is if the new parking lot is open yet? I'm thinking about heading that way this Sat. (The 9th), and I am worried about finding parking. I don't tow with a truck, so going out on the sand is not an option.

Posted by: RPM

I have put my 2 cents in on my feeling towards Sand Lake several times on here in the past. It is Far from being my favorite place, however, I just made a few mods to my KFX700, and I need to do some test runs. For me, it is the difference between a 2 hour drive to Sand Lake, or a 4 1/2 hour drive to Florence. For a day trip, Florence isn't an option.

Posted by: RPM

You are in LUCK. In my riding group, we have a V, a KFX400 (Z400) and 2 Predator's One stock, one modded). I will PM you next time we head to the Sand and give you a shot at riding all 3 in one trip. If we go this weekend, neither of the Predator's will be there.

Hi Everyone,

Since some of these events might be happening down that way, I thought I would post this info here for you guys and girls too.

The Pacific Northwest ATV Racing Association is in it's very introductory stages. The goal is to create a Cross Country ATV Racing series in the Pacific Northwest for the 2005 Racing season. Thoughts are to have a 6 race series with points accumulated for season championships. Races would be held at various locations around the Pacific Northwest. Possible locations are Goldendale, Richland, Longview and Morrow County ORV park. All races would be Grand Prix, Hare Scrambles, or Cross Country.
Dean Waters with Off-Road.com is working hard to get this organized. He is looking for suggestions and input from racers and people who would be interested in these types of events.
Here is a link with more info and to leave input of what you would like to see happen.

My understanding is that there is no law specifying age and size in Oregon. As far as I know, the state legislators have not taken that decision from the parents' hands yet.

You must have a helmet on children.

You must supervise them when they ride.

We have 9 & 11 year olds on 80s and a 6 year old on a 90. Its a matter of fit, skill level....

When my 14 year old followed the manufacturers recs and rode one of the little bikes, it was unsafe because he is too big - the kid is bigger than I am!

Back to your question, I believe the size of the kids quad is still at your discretion.

great meeting you and the rest from the Portland area. I just got home a couple hours ago and let me tell you, I did not want to leave this morning. It blew last night and was crystal clear this morning! And I didn't get to go ride the silky smooth sand
Oh well, I guess 4+ days in the sand will have to do for now.
Can't wait to see the pictures!

I broke a couple of studs trying to remove them and then a friend (who happened to be a mechanic) offered to do it for me if I let him use the motorhome for a weekend. YOU BET!
Good luck with it and I'll see you late Thursday night, or Friday if you're already asleep.

Posted by: Red400EXRod

Sounds like a good time with Bear's rv. Glad it's all fixed up.
I wish I could leave home at 1 and be there at 4 or 5.
I'm leaving Thursday at about 3pm and will be there I hope around 11PM

OK! Hi Jim!

Hey Bear,
Great article in Dirt Wheels!

Posted by: Red400EXRod

Anyone know if Sandbeach Campground at Sandlake is open? I'm getting conflicting info on different web sites.
Thinking of going down next weekend.

Posted by: Red400EXRod

Ken,
Thanks for the information.
I am pulling out of here tomorrow afternoon and hope to arrive down there by 9 PM. Hope it's not too crowded and easy to find a spot to park at that time.
I got my wife a new 400EX for a Valentines Day/Birthday gift and she's dying to try it out.
Rod

Hi Ken,
No, my wife and I went to Sandlake the weekend before last.
The campground was open and it was also great weather!
Never thought I'd sit by the campfire in the middle of February on the Oregon coast.

Nice that you got the Quadracer R450! I'll have to line up next to you the next time we run into each at the dunes.

Speaking of that, there is a group heading to Florence (Driftwood) In June from the 7th - 11th.
So far we have Happa, Nick, Jim (BigD) Myself and our wives. Oh yeah, Josh and Marcie too on the far end so they have room for their rolling palace.
We have reserved sites 7, 9, 11, 13 and 12.
Come on down and join the fun.

I also have a reservation at Honeyman State Park for April 15 - 18. We are not going to be able to make it since our son will be home on leave from Iraq at that time.
It is site #H384, next to dune access and it has FULL hook ups.
If you or anyone you know want it, you can get it from me for $57.00, that's what it cost me.

There are no other sites available for Saturday night in April in Honeyman.

What are you looking for? Trails, sand?
Head toward Tillamook for eithr one. Sand at Sandlake and trails at Browns Camp.

Posted by: Red400EXRod

Anyone down here ever ridden / camped at Bakers Camp on the hiway to Tillamook?
Thinking of heading there this summer and wondering what it's like.

Posted by: Red400EXRod

Browns Camp, yeah that's the one!
Thanks Bear.
Where is the forestry office so I could get a map? Will they sell me one and mail it?

Not as big as the last one you were on with us, but about a dozen of us are going to Honeyman on April 7th-11th, then a day ride at Winchester on the 11th and the Horsfall from the 11th to the 15th!
Should be a blast! Come join us!

Posted by: Red400EXRod

PSAR group (around 10 - 12) going to Honeyman from April 7th - 11th, then a day ride on the 11th at Winchester and then staying at Horsfall from the 11th to the 15th.
Hitting the big 3 with one trip!
I know Honeyman is pretty much booked solid but Horsfall is still wide open from the 11th - 15th.
So far at Horsfall we have sites 3-6 with another one of us going to get #7. Also was mention of someone possibly getting 1&2.

Thanks,

Honeyman only has direct dune access from Sept. 1st - April 30th
Only other park (except private) that has dune access at Florence dunes is Driftwood

Bear & 2Fun and all other Portland bretheren!

Posted by: Red400EXRod

A whole group of us PSAR peeps will be at Florence (Honeyman) this weekend until Wed. Then a day ride at Winchester and on to Coos Bay (horsfall) until the 15th

Posted by: HappaRap

We're heading down October 13th and will be returning on the 16th. That's the big PSAR group campout and ride. Some of us are moteling it, but also have sites reserved at Driftwood II for a place to park our towrigs, trailers and quads.

We are in space 64. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Bear, it is ironic that I made the reservations, then talked to afterburner and he told me that you and he were going to already be there. Parker should be and Gary is unknown. It will be fun to see everyone again. How did your article turn out?

I kinda like that, but might want to try it out a little more before deciding if I wanted to go that way.

Oh ya,

Final verdict on Rene', the gal that crashed.
She's been in the hospital since she came home, will be until Sunday or Monday.
2 broken wrists, both required surgery. Pins and screws.
Broken knee, going to require a screw or two to the head of the tibia.
2 broken ribs..
The wrist they casted in Richland swelled up (duh!!!) bone came through the skin.
They didn't catch the broken knee or ribs at the hospital in Richland.
She is in great spirits, but gonna take a while to heal.

Hey I am going to be a new California import to Vancouver, WA as of May 9th. Let's hook up when I get settled. And please don't hold it against me that I am from So Cal.

Posted by: kiley123

Thanks BigDaddy. I will definitely need to get my fix of riding. I will jump on that thread. I have been lurking for awhile now and it sounds like a good bunch of people. Look forward to meeting you.

Posted by: kiley123

Do any of you guys have links to any maps online of close riding areas?

Posted by: kiley123

Sorry to be such a newbie, but where is Jones Creek from Vancouver?

Posted by: kiley123

OK...I wasn't able to get out this weekend. Everyone tell me how your weekend was?

hint: I am living vicariously through you.

Posted by: kiley123

How was the ride at Florence yesterday? The weather must have been nice.

Posted by: kiley123

What happened to your back? 20-foot jump?

Posted by: kiley123

A bit?!? It was like a hour long enema. But really fun. I may like it up here in the northwest.

Posted by: kiley123

ok...I am rather new to the NW but DSXbear and DSideup just took me to Florence last week. Needless to say, I am in love with this place. I am a dune-a-holic and played a lot at Glamis when I lived down there. But Florence gave me what I needed to cure my fix...for a little while I just wanted to thank these guys publicly. They are great guides and good friends. Thanks guys.

Paul

Posted by: kiley123

I wanna go. I need to test out my new pipe kit. Merry Xmas to me.

Posted by: kiley123

I'm down. End of Feb would be better for me.

Ken- Let's see if we can get a ride in before this though. I like your idea about the snow.

Posted by: kiley123

Hey 2mny...I went to Freddys and couldn't find one of those heaters. So I may be standing in front of yours again.

Posted by: kiley123

I'm actually looking at renting a motorhome and bringing the family. What do you guys think? Do you know of a good place to do that?

Posted by: kiley123

Hey Bear, A motel would be a lot cheaper than renting a motorhome. Might be a little easier on my daughter too. Let me know which one you decide on.

Posted by: kiley123

Bear, how was Sandlake on Sunday?

Posted by: kiley123

Damn bomber...does that mean we have to bring our own Crown?

Posted by: kiley123

Ken, the new job is pretty good. I may not be able to make it to Horsfall though. I fly out to DC on Sunday. Maybe a Saturday only trip. I have a new cell number also that I will PM you.

Posted by: kiley123

Ok...I'm still going to try and make it. Let me know which hotel you are at.

Posted by: kiley123

Whenever you are ready...I never know when to call you since you are working nights. I am leaving on the 27th for a week.

Posted by: kiley123

Don't bag on the Zuks. Just because we don't ride Cadillacs, shouldn't be reason to rip on the sports cars.

Posted by: kiley123

Bear and Dis,
Got a picture up of you guys "riding hard" at Horsfall. Check it.

Posted by: kiley123

Well, since you are tired...I should tell you that I bought all of the supplies for framing my basement. Let me know when you want to come over for a beer.

P

Posted by: kiley123

Sorry to hear about the Bomber. Tell her to get well from me.

Ken, count me and the family in for the end of April. Think we are going to tent it. Made a trip to Costco today and picked up a huge tent...should be a good test.

Posted by: kiley123

Wait a minute... Bombardier...preferred breed?!? That's hilarious. I guess there still are people that like Cadillacs as opposed to Sports cars. Damn Canadians.

Posted by: kiley123

Bear,
Am I taking your trailer? Call me to discuss that and food.

P

Posted by: kiley123

I am going to be there. I think I am camping with you, right?

Posted by: kiley123

what is rhodi fest?
