Its a very nice job but from what i've been told it's not the orginal finish. Any thoughts? Oh yeah it has a 4 digit serial # which leads me to believe its a first year, and has a weaver scope.

I would have to run down my gun show partner and see what the book says. Marlin is still producing the39A and they aren't drawing any special pricing, but a 4 digit serial number??????? I e-mailed the flake cop and will see what the book says. I also contacted a Marlin collector I know and will see what he says.

Not a 39A, it's a 39 made between 1922 and 1938. Posted a couple of pics on my page.

TReX400, I forwarded the pics to Randy and here's his response.

"Fred since it has been blued I believe it would be treated as a 39a for value. It looks in good condition so $300-500 depending on the buyer. Be advised if he were to have it professionally restored, re-case colored $$$ an original 39 goes from $1300 for 60% and $3000 at 95%. Not many in great shape due to the fact these rifles were shooters. (My prices come from 27th Edition of Blue Book of Gun Values)hope this of some help.

Randy"

Thats pretty much the word i got off the marlin bulletin board you posted earlier. They also said it didn't come with holes for a scope so it was drilled and tapped. I will probably keep it as is cuz my wife would go ape scat if i throw money at another gun.

Just in case, any ideas on where to get said gun restored?

Ask on the Marlin Collectors forum. They know alot more about old guns than I do.

Here is a little bike for anyone with kids in need. Not too expensive.

Suzuki

We're glad DJ is ok.

My brother and I had some of the worst driving records... Though, my brother took the cake when he drove over a honda civic with our dad's 56 Ford pickup. Not good... especially when he drove home right after. Front end was almost wiped off the truck. The front tires were pointed outward. The police just followed the debris around the corner and up the street to our dad's house. Dad was watching tv when he heard the police say "get out of the truck... put your hands on the truck". Dad went down to the police station and let him out of jail. When they got to the car in the parking lot, the passenger door was locked. Dad drove home... Not a word was said about that accident after then. Truck was sent to the shop for a few months and the frame was straightend, fenders were replaced. Then my brother took out a fire hydrant with the car... a few months later he was in the military.

Maybe it's just the people that you know

Posted by: Red400EXRod

You haven't really lived until you drive your best friends car through a farmers fence, barbed wire at that. You give the car a great barbed wire pinstripe job from front to back and over the roof. Oh yeah, you also take a couple of fence posts into the windshield and down the side of the car. You see, when you hit a barbed wire fence the posts break off but stay connected to the wire. Use your imagination and you'll understand.
Then you give your car to your best friend so he can drive it home from WSU because he has to get to work. Then you drive his car back the next weekend, over the pass, WITHOUT the windshield, wearing motorcycle goggles!
To top it all off he's still your best frind to this day, almost 30 years later!

This is what can happen when you try to drive after consuming 20 shoots of tequila! Or so I'm told!

I left a call for help. I did find an exploded view of the rifle and the scope is mounted via the ejector base screws so new holes were not drilled for it.

Did you crash your first car?

Posted by: OneFlyCowboy

I think i must have worded my survey wrong though or sompthing.. I wasn't tryin to get just incapacitated vehicles.. I was just talkin about damage that would make your car not worth as much. i mean hell. i had my ranger not even 2 weeks and i hit a tree with it backin thru the woods. thats considers crashin your rig to me. I had to get it fixed.. Well i didnt till i got hit n run on that side and they replaced the qtr panel.

First car, 1964 1/2 Mustang (not the one on in NY)
Dented hood, dented rear qtr panel. Still worth more when I sold it than when I bought it. Oh yeah, I also blew the 289 that was in it and put a 302 in it.

Good morning PSAR kind of quiet on here this AM. WQ is hurtin again, ouch! New pics up from those that went south, good times. OFC buning up gas and tne looking to buy a new quad. Things keep moving on.

Bear: Any chance of a ride Wednesday? Only day this week I will be able to make it. Next week SWMBO and I will be racing around. Celebrating our wedding anniversary. We were going to go to Reno or something but have decided to just make some one or two day trips around this area.

EDIT: Holy Cats! I started this post and nothing was going on, got called away for a bit and the place filled up while I was gone. Socko made his debut. What is going to happen next? ! ! ! ! !

What an AWESOME trip to the dunes. The weather was PERFECT!!! img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">Mid to High 70's and sunny with the exception of a very light mist on Friday night after dark. Sunny again by morning. Horsfal was great! I really enjoyed that area even more than Florence. It always makes it better when you have a great group to ride with. Thanks Jay, Lu, Paul, Judy and Dillon. It was a blast to ride with you. You too Jenna!

The Z ran great and got me out of everywhere and everything. Missed one small turn trying to take an alternative treeshot(I was getting cocky and showing off) and bumped into a tree. That sent me off the quad and turned it over like a turtle. Couldn't have balanced it more perfectly upside down. When we turned it right side up it climbed right out of the holeshot! Cheech even got an awesome video of it. Too cool. I am absolutely tickled pink with how all the work on the Z turned out. Love it! Was glad to ride it equally as much as the R450.

The R goes everywhere, of course. It's like a spiderman quad. It's so wide and stable it sticks to the sidehilling and treeshots like glue. It's very happy being upright and hasn't really offered to pitch me off at all. My only real wish as an improvement would be to have reverse on it.

The drive home was long. I had to stop several times to wake up. Oh yeah, blew a tire on the trailer. Good thing I am prepared and know how to change a tire on a trailer. Sucks doing on the side of the freeway when the tire that blows is on the traffic side. Hate that.

I will have to post dune pics later.

They didn't come down, but the R450 rear grabbar snapped off and the taillight is shattered. It doesn't look like it damaged the exhaust at all-Thank Gawd. Plastics are bent but that I can fix with a hairdryer. WTF!?!?! Anyone else heard of the grab bar snapping off when transporting a quad standing up? That is just crap. No idea how much it's going to cost for those parts, but I doubt it's going to be cheap. And of course, it's a week out of warranty so I can't even see if Suzuki would cover the failure of the part. horsefall is my favorite aswell. the expanse of trails there is unreal. leaving camp if you co out and stay right in the horsfall are till you get to houser road and then hit houser and just keep taking lefts till you end up at the day use area. thats a good ride. you can just rip along and get in the groove.

I didn't have it tied down by the grab bar, I only tie to the frame, but it was being transported standing up balanced on the grab bar. Grrr.

No joke. The good thing is it's a separate piece from the rear subframe. My Z grab bar is one piece with the rear subframe. Bad design. If you bend that grab bar, you are replacing the entire rear frame.

Good thing i don't ride a zuki.. I already go thru grab bars like crazy.. Im on my 5th grab bar on the craptor. On the warriors. they are big pipe welded deep into the sub frame.. havent bent them yet.. but when you shear the mounting points off the frame you can be left with little alternative

Jayna that sucks about the grab bar. I have stood mine up on the grab bar, and nothing has happened to mine. Thank god mine is just the bar too and not including the rear sub frame. See if your warranty will cover it if you still have it.

Other than that, sounds like you and jenna had a blast as well. Good to hear.

Ya know, that just might be a plan! If I drag the Z and the horsetrailer up, we can "scout" on the quads and then if we find anything we can get to, I can go back and get the trailer. Yeah, yeah, that's it! Like we need an excuse to ride. Lets go! Supposed to be nice.

I would actually have to change my tires though. Haven't touched the quads since I found the busted R450. set it down and locked it up.

I may just recruit Wunderboy/crashwunder to help me finish it up if I can't get it done this weekend.

ahhh,,,wood poaching,,,,my favorite fall activity

i just scored a cord of cherrywood in Medina off of craigslist

going to get some seasoned madrona and cherry in woodinville in a little while

gonna have to rent a splitter pretty soon,,,,,40 bucks for 4 hours,,,not a bad deal

That is a good deal. Tried Craiglist, but I don't have the freetime to run as soon as I see something and I don't live on the southend, so I miss quite a few opportunities.

I hear ya,,,,by the time you see the ad,,,there is usually 10-20 people who have already responded.

I got another sweet deal on some seasoned wood in 8' lengths. Now i have to empty the tools from the trailer and tune the saw.

Wood is good!!

I just got back from the farm about an hour ago and am catching up on the reading. Lots of pages! Model 39 are in demand and I understand there are a number of variations in the early years of production especially. I don't have any books over here that would ID it for you and my collecting is primarily in areas other than Marlins. If Bear has trouble getting the info for you let me know and I'll run it thru the NRA process. No values quoted but the history will be accurate.

Grinders use a lot of air, you may have to rest a bit once in a while for the compressor to build pressure. Depends on how big the grinder is and how hard your working it. All in all I would think 10 CFM at anything over 120 would be way plenty for a home shop. I would suggest you invest in an air line filter and oil/water separator to protect the tools.
I've read the oilless direct drive units are louder and life expectancy is not as long as the oil fed, but, not sure if there's any hard facts backing that theory up. Thanks for all the information, you've been very helpful.

From contractors I have known and my own experience I would consider the little cheap oilless compressors as throwaways.

Great weekend at the farm. Spent lots of time with the kids, grandkids and family friends. Ate way too much and laughed a lot. Finally got a little rain so the area is a little less likely to go up in smoke. All in all we, SWMBO and I, had a great anniversary.

Prior to shipping that off to have the case hardening done there are a couple of things you might consider.

Depending on when the action was made, and all actions are not made at the same time the rifle is finished, the method used to case harden could be different than what is done now. Many of the old actions, the change was done over many years by various mfr, were hardened using dry bone, powdered arsenic, leather and an iron box. Heat was applied and held for an extended period and the cooling and reheating process was involved to say the least. Modern methods are wholly different as the use of arsenic was considered dangerous, (who would have thought?), and discontinued. The colors brought out by the bone and leather have a richer and deeper tone than the new methods. IF, and I emphasize the if, your rifle is from the old school modern case hardening will not restore it to original colors.

The next point would be to be very sure the action has been modified. Many companies have made limited runs that have a real collectors value and often these can be very difficult to document. If this rifle were mine I would invest a bit, make that a lot, of effort into determining if this piece is original as it stands. A case in point is an '03 Springfield I own. Nothing particularly exciting about an original 03-A3 as there are a lot of them around but this one is from a limited run "made" at the Springfield Armory in the 20's, don't remember the exact year, but the receiver is stamped RIA, Rock Island Armory. RI made the receivers in the period just after WWI and stored them. SA took these receivers and made the finished rifles several years later. It took a few years to document the fact that this was an original rifle and not a rifle made from parts. Serial numbers and proof marks were what led to the documentation. A lot of "experts" were fooled by this one.

Another thought, What color is the "blueing" on the piece? Most of the old, pre mid 50's or so, rifles had a deep, rich, blue or dark blue color. Later finishes tend to be more of a very dark blue or black color. If the rifle has been redone after the types of salts were changed, again for safety and economic reasons, the color may tell you a lot. Be very careful of the experts you consult and always get a fifth and sixth opinion prior to making a decision. A good place to start may be at the Washington Arms Collectors shows. Just take the rifle around to a number of booths and ask "what is this and what's it worth?" Be prepared to be treated well and badly. Lot's of unscrupulous dealers/collectors out there. Also lots of less than competent people willing to "restore" pieces for you. I have a 1854 Maynard primed Springfield 56 Cal that was absolutely destroyed as a collector piece by a well know gunsmith that restored it. The d##n fool polished of the Parkerizing and blued it.

Sorry this turned into a book.

Good morning you all, this is the silent one..od thanks for the info...think we will try out Spinrell and camp there for a couple days. October is suppose to be good month to go play in sand from what we hear. We have been 2 times this year and are hooked on riding the sand. We don't have any speed demons, just 2 artic cat 400's, automatics and they go anywhere, even those big dunes.. they love the mud and water and we are going to go find some this weekend!!! yahoo!! I am sure we can find some mud to play in now after the rain and hopefully dust will be not bad. From what we hear Straddleline gets over packed on weekends..might be better off going to Waddell creek camping and that one is free and really nice campground.

Thanks Mike, any and all info is appreciated. The rifle was made in 1922 and the blueing is a very glossy black, i guess that answers that. So the whole thing probably needs redone.

Two of us could lift the rear of the car when off roading and gettin hi centerd.. So you just hammer up over stuff and if you get high centered lift and push was allotta fun. Most air i ever got was up at snoqualmie pass in the snow. I couldnt tell you how much but it was allot.. the snow plow had just got off the west bound exit down towards ski acres and there was a ton of fresshies. at least 2 feet. I went under the freeway at 60+ and hit that berm man did we launch out into into the pow It was . i didnt even spill my beer j/k

That sounds like alot of fun, but scary too.

When Justin owned a mustang GT, he started doing donuts at a 4 way stop, i was screaming and i was basically sitting on his lap by the time we were done. I thought we were going to roll over.

When we go jeeping now i'm parinoid. My jeep is so tippy, Justin is always laughing at me, because i'm hanging on for life with the ol $hit handle and my eyes are huge. I'm always hitting him on the arm too, because he already rolled me over once (2 years ago) in that thing so he always gives me a hard time. Chill out, he always says. LOL Well how come it always has to lean my way, i always ask?

I have never crashed a vehicle either. Just roll my quad!

I set out a sentence from my previous post. Please re-read and do some more research prior to going by what I have said. I haven't seen the rifle and even then I would want to have a couple of other folks look at it. You know the old story about the "expert". Kind of like the word "assume" makes an ass out of u and me, well, an expert is just a has been drip under pressure. Way too many collector pieces are being ruined for their historic value by experts every year.

Looks like it will be next wednesday before I can get out. Booked up for the weekend and first part of the week. May have to go to Capital Forest and see what the rain did to the dust. Have to get some new rain pants, got hung up on some barbed wire and ventilated the backside of the old pair. Why don't more people wear rain gear when riding in the wet? They seem to work great and lot's of folks use them over where our farm is. Here in the Seattle area I seldom see anyone riding with big ol yellow rain gear on. Is it considered un-cool?

Once I implemented Maggie's boy's suggestion to wrap my exhaust I haven't burned a set of raingear since. He set me up with the stuff from CycleBarn, but also directed me to look at Napa Auto Parts, or search online for Exhaust wrap and they have colors now. MUCH MUCH cheaper than replacing raingear. No more than a couple bucks a foot. Tied on with Safety Wire. Slick as snot.

I was thinkin about exhaust wrap for the outty to reduce the under the seat heat.. them pipes get hot in there..

Posted by: OneFlyCowboy

I think im gonna get me some Blue header wrap for the rappy red would be neat too. but all accesories on my bike is blue so stick to the theme.

Posted by: warriorqueen

I had to do the same thing. I bought a brand new pair of over the boot riding pants and the first time i wore them i melted the crap out of them. Does anybody have just a zip off right leg laying around that i can have? LOL That's all i need is the right leg. I wrapped my exhaust with the exhaust wrap too and haven't had one problem with it so far.

Most of the ATV's used on farms are Ute's so the burned and melted legs would normally not be an issue. That may be a big part of the reason for the popularity of the rain gear over there.

OOOOO that does sound fun . I guess my question is.. my pipe has springs holding it togetherl.. is it a problem to have airspace under the wrap?

I have the Yosh pipe on the Z and I just took my springs off, wrapped it all up tight and punched the springs back through the wrap. It's not a super tight weave so you don't even have to cut holes for it. Works perfectly.

Would you recomend the 1" width or 2".. 1" seems like it would be easier to install

Heck Ten, I wear neoprene chest waders with the footies, Val refers to it as my Gumbie outfit, keeps me bone dry, atleast from the rain. Now the sweat underneath is another story BR>

I doubt it would bother the wrap but I wonder if the springs would be overheated with the insulation over them and loose their ability to hold.

2" tape with a 1" overlap. It stretches just enough to fit perfectly around bends and such. I didn't wrap my header though. I only wrapped from the stock heatshield back to the exhaust can.

I think I used about 10' total.

The springs are already designed to be in direct contact with the exhaust pipe. If you are putting heat shield between them and the metal of the pipe, wouldn't it stand to reason they would actually be more protected? At least that was my though. I just didn't want to bury them under the wrap because it wouldn't allow me to wrap it tight and still look decent. Seems to have been fine on mine for the last year or so. No more ruined riding pants!

Probably. It is Napa. I just used Safety wire and a Safety wire tool. Clean as a whistle. RockyMountain ATV has the kit for pretty cheap and it is a nice addition to the toolbox.

We did stop at Wally world and they have Slime on sale. About 27 bucks a gallon. (I escaped direct supervision for a short period ) The girl working in that area ask me if I needed help carrying it to the check-stand! Just how old and feeble do I look anyhow? Been there, done that. And it ain't no fun no way. Took over a year and a half off work to get to where I could function again. Sure glad I didn't go under the knife. Everyone I know that has had spinal fusion has been back in for more work within 5 to 7 years. Been 15 years for me and very limited ongoing problems.

I wish you lots of luck with this and really encourage you to get more than one opinion if they start talking surgery.

Oh! He has my sympathy for sure. I was in that business for awhile, about a year, and would help the crew quite often. Hanging that 14'8" board was a lot like work. The taping and bands were also hard work but nothing like hanging lids.

He needs to get into the spraying or brocade end of the job. Or better yet get into another line of work.

Tin can studs would be a lot easier on the back I would think but still requires a lot of lifting, twisting and climbing around. Way easier on the back and knees in the long run.

The BIG SALE starts in 2 hours. Come one, come all!

Neither are any quads or parts!

All kinds of other good crap, though!

Come on out and buy something, we gotta pay for a wedding!

Today I see the resutls of my plumbing skills (that's scary) when I turn the water back on. Two days without water is not fun, especially hot water. Thank goodness for the Motorhome, a short warm shower is better than no shower at all.

New 200 amp service project starts today (no, I'm not attempting this), with the kitchen getting rewired along with some other electrical projects. Thursday, we make the switch over. Camping at home is fun

Good Morning PSAR. Overcast has burned off and it a bright and beautiful day. Great day for a yard sale, good luck with that. I don't dare visit as we have way to much good stuff now. Dog and I have our morning rounds done and I'm out the door to work on my toy truck. Gotta put some helper springs in the back to level it up a bit for hauling the quad. It's an S-10 and I do believe if you filled it level full of ping pong balls it would drag it's butt.

Quiet in here today. Went out and put the overloads on the pickup, walked Mr Mutt, had coffee with the neighbor, looked at CL and no new posts in here. Makes me wonder if major stuff is going on. Better check the news, could be that Happa's plumbing has flooded out the area.
