I'll be at Johnson Valley over Memorial Day Weekend. Johnson has it's share of rocks but it also has great Dry Lakes, Little Dunes and lots of Open Desert.

You wouldn't happen to be him - would ya?

BTW - you desert fans - I hear that the ISP owner in LV knows of all the great ridin' areas in the high desert... I remember him taking me up to see these mine shafts - then there was slash X (all of the true johnson valley desert fans know what I'm talkin' about) - what a trip.

Naw wern't me, must be a differnt fellow racin rc cars.

The guy that owns the Lucerne market does ride and works on bikes if he feels like it.

It was too hot today down here. Some friends and I left home on the quads, rode up Bowen Ranch rd ,then up 3n14 to Big Pine campground. We turned on 4n16(?) and rode over to 3n34. It's a Jeep Jamboree deal this weekend and we watched the heeps climb the rocks at the Deep Creek crossing. From there we rode 3m34 to hwy 173 and came home that way.

What a ride! Lots of purty girls riding up there too!

Yup, I'm about 2 miles south of Rock Springs rd off of Deep Creek. I can see hesperia lake from my porch.

I don't really know if 3n14 is legal or not....heres why.

At Bowen Ranch rd there is a sign that has a pic of a quad...so it's legal here. When ya get to 4n16 it says you gotta go left and go up the White mtn trail. White mtn will drop you onto 3n16 near Holcomb Valley at 3n16 and 3n16 is legal all the way west across 3n14 to 3n34.

According to the maps that the Blm leaves at the corner of Bowen and 3n14. 3n14 is legal all the way to 3n16, it says "tempory atv acess" and shows us legal up to 4n16 and has said that for several years now.

I have talked to several rangers while up there and none can answer the question as to if it's legal or not between 3n16 and 4n16. Again the map they put in the mail box doesn't coiencide with the road signs.

Most of the Rangers are kool with you as long as you got a spark arester and a green or red sticker.

Theres a ranger around there named Bob Pool. He's a nice guy and very knowlegable about the area. As long as you dont BS him or do something stupid he's fair with you. If your bein stupid he will drop the hammer on you fast!

Yesterday I was talkin to another Ranger while at the Deep Creek crossing. He winked at us and told us to be carefull goin down hwy 173 into hesperia.

Ya, 173 is the only unpaved state hwy in ca. Be big trouble if we got caught on it. We use it often and have been lucky I guess.

We didn't see anybody checkin sound. They are closin the Deep Creek crossing for month to pave the road acrosc the stream.

We were going to ride there this weekend (www.ruts.org), at Cougar Buttes. But allas, I am nursing a bad knee and will have to give it a rest! Going to ride the Sierras around Bishop Memorial Day, so I've got to get well. Have fun!!!

Chris-does anybody bother you going down 173??? Aren't you supposed to be street legal to use it?? Anybody up there checking for sound levels??? I'm going to ride up there tomorrow. Probably just from Miller Canyon to Deep Creek and back. Take Care.

Already going to Jawbone Canyon. Isn't Johnson Valley really rocky?

Johnson Valley is about 25 miles east of Bartsow...north of the 247.

Many people know it as Lucerne, but whatever. I'm sure my pops will be out there tuling the desert in his jeep with the pink floyd or led zeppelin cranked. Living off camp rock road for 7 years, I love that damn desert. Best riding there is I think - racing up sand mountain, playing in the soggy dunes area, jetting across melville dry lake - oh yeah baby! Too bad I live in this anti ATV hellhole called northern california. The neighbors always get pissed when I fire up my bike...

I always tell them to go buy a bike - they don't know what they're missing.

Have a great time in the desert - just remember to pack out what you pack in, those weekenders love to ruin it sometimes. Ever seen the desert after a SCORE race? Pitiful.

Bowen Ranch to 3n14...

Isn't that for street legal vehicles only? I remember about 15 years ago (I think) 3n14 was closed to ATV use.. Is that an open trail? Maybe my head is tricking me. I do love those big bear mountain trails though - just watch out for the trees!

I heard about the jeep jamboree -those guys are freakin' nuts!
