Broken Bow is a fun place to ride. You stated that most of the trails are flat. This tells me that more than likely you rode the west side of 259. For the tougher terrain cross 259 and ride towards the lake. Lots of fun stuff there. You can ride from some other cabins, just be sure to call and ask first. We typically do 100+ miles a day. As far as the $25 fee goes that is for one calendar year of riding. Heck we usually pay $20/day at some other places. For $0.000025 per acre I'd say thats a good deal.

The food in the area stinks. But after 12+ hours of riding a day it will fill your stomach. We have tried just about every place up there. And beware of the "fast" food places in town. They are everything but fast. BR>
If you need further info on the trails or want some trail numbers to try shoot me an email.

Just south of the Mt Herman area there is a ton of riding area between 259 and the lake. I am talking more the north end of the lake up by what looks like 54000. You will have to forgive me as my good maps are in the garage. I am trying to read the one off my web site. If you only saw a couple of trails I'm guessing you were too far south. We have 3-4 areas that we usually park in and ride from there. It is illegal to ride on the side of the road and the tickets are steep. Its my understanding that Arkansas state law is the same. The terrain is different that WPG, but I can tell you there are plenty of hills that are tougher than WPG. Heck go outside WPG up by Albert Pike and it will make WPG look like a kiddy park. Given the sheer size (1,000,000+ acres in the TRWMA alone...not including Honobia) it takes time to learn where everything is. We make it a point to not ride the same trails over and over. Heck, my goal right now is to make it to Clayton via the "K trail" on quads alone! If you have a GPS, I can give you some waypoints and routes to follow. If you are going to the WPG area I can also tell you some fun places there. I will have to email my buddy to get the lodge name as our trip last year was cancelled. I'll try to get a map from the garage and get you some trail numbers. Feel free to email me.

Having been there so much there isnt much we havent seen. With that said, west of 259 is the same everywhere. Its all pretty much flat logging roads. North of Mt Herman there are some rolling hills, but still all nice logging roads. May not be the most exciting thing to ride, but heck sometimes its nice to just ride, relax, and take in nature.

If you are going this weekend let me give you a great place to park and ride from. One of our favorites. I'll do my best to explain.

After you go past the state park on 259, continue past the other two state parks (Carsons Creek and Stephens Gap). About a few miles north of this the road will bend to the right and off to the left you will see a high line(power line up real high...hence the name) going up a big hilll with a dirt trail next to it. As a side note you can NOT, cant stress that enough, NOT ride the high lines. Its against state law. Anyway, after you curve right, it will again curve a little to the left. There will be a parking ares (nothing more than dirt to park on) on the right. Its big enough for 3-4 trucks with trailers. From here you can ride some nice trails on the east side, or cross the road and ride the west side. Be 100% to not block the trail entrances as there are some prime camp spots back there and if you block a truck in you will be sure to get a visit from the authorities. This is a great place to park for a day trip.

I got an email but it looked like it was from a different person. What kind of GPS do you have? This will help me in getting that info to you.

Posted by: TEXMud

Email has been sent. Its a zip file with 4 things in it.

- .mps file for MapSource
- .txt export of that above (incase you dont have mapsource)
- .erf export like above (incase you dont have mapsource)
- .jpg picture of maps I have made and rides

If you have MapSource, the MetroGuide CDs will put about 90-95% of the trails up there on your GPS.

okbow68, I have 5.02 which I downloaded as a free update to my 4.13 version. www.garmin.com has it posted here: http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=369. As far as opening those two exports, I went to the import section and sure enough the smart folks at Garmin made a program that exports to a file that is different than they can import. Try upgrading your verson and see if you cant read that MapSource file.

Creekrider, Yes there is an option on your GPS V to turn on more detail. If you dont turn it on, little roads (like a forrest road in relation to a highway) wont show up. As far as the topo maps go, do NOT waste your time. They show topography, not trails. They are terrible to read while moving and slow to load.

airmoore,

The fee has nothing at all to do with quads. Its a land use pass. It helps to maintain the area and keep it open to the public. You must have this permit to even walk on the land. So, with that in mind, its per person. Yes this includes kids.

As far as camping goes, the only place I have seen with hook ups myself have been the state campgrounds. You can not ride from them. At some time, someone posted about a place that you could ride from with hookups but I cant remember the url.

Yes all the riding area is north of most of the state camp grounds. An old version of the map is available on my web site (www.ansley.net). The maps are free and can be gotten where you get your pass. Get them at most gas stations up there or Walmart. Just ask for a "land use pass" and a free map.

okbow68,

Those are not all the routes we have done, just some common ones.

I have MetroGuide and use it exclusively. I have yet to find one trail in the Broken Bow area or the WPG area that is on the topo and no the MetroGuide.

What I wish you could do is have a mix of both softwares working at once. Maybe MetroGuide on full detail, and topo on a lower detail level. My eTrex Vista cant do that though.

Posted by: TEXMud

Last I looked the Roads and Rec had less trails than the MetroGuide. This is why I bought it. I took a screen capture at .7 miles zoom with both topo(right) and metro(left) that can be seen here:

http://www.ansley.net/temp/metro_topo.jpg

The topo is just too crowded to read fast on a trail for me.

I havent riden at Clayton yet. We have NEVER made it to the K Trail. The last time we tried we had rookies with us that I knew couldnt handle the 12-15 hour ride we would of had. I am still trying to find a decent way to get there since the trails in Honobia are NOT marked well.

City Select will not have trials on it. MetroGuide is the best I have found thus far and I have about 10 different MapSource versions. As far as mapping software, I havent found anything better than the Garmin MapSource stuff. If you want to get really wild you can plot your tracks on satellite images as I have done a few times in the past. Check my site for those pics (www.ansley.net)

All the immediate land around Wister is state park. This more than likely means you can NOT ride it. But about 10 miles south is Honobia, which is the northern part of Broken Bow and has the same rules.

Posted by: TEXMud

Yes you can ride in Honobia. Its off 259. Maps are on my site.

Posted by: TEXMud

I've got their entire maps scanned on my site at www.ansley.net.

My wife and I rode the National forest area and the wildlife management area north of Broken Bow, Ok. this weekend. We stayed at the whipperwill lodge about 12 miles north of Broken Bow. It was a good place to stay because we were able to ride from the property to the trails on our ATV's. They are a little expensive, but worth it. We did a lot of exploring looking for some rough or tough riding, but it was mostly pretty flat. The trails are well marked with trail numbers which correspond with markings on maps which are given away at local convenience stores. We rode about 45 miles Saturday and could probably have ridden for a month without seeing the same trail twice. The next time we go, we will ask around for directions to some more challenging areas. I guess the only bad part of the ride is the fact that Oklahoma charges $25.00 for a riding permit which is required on the game management areas but not the national forest. That cost is for out of state riders. I believe it is a lot lower for residents. I was told your four wheeler will be impounded if you are caught riding without a permit. I don't mind supporting the maint. of the trails and roads in the riding area, but it seemed a little steep. We ate at three different restaurants in the area and wouldn't recommend any of them unless you just want to get full. If you just want some fun riding on good trails, I recommend the area.

Good Riding

Ted

Thanks for the reply texmud. Yes, we did all of our riding on the west side of 259. Just looking at the map, it seemed like a lot more area was available to ride west of 259. We drove the east side in our car looking for trails and entrances to trails. Only saw a couple of trails from the road. Not a lot of space between the highway and Lake Broken Bow, maybe two or three miles. Unlike Wolf Pen Gap, you can't just go scouting down the highway on your ATV looking for trail entrances. Understand the local law boys frown on that. On the west side, we only found one really steep trail and it was short. We also found one fairly rocky, steep, trail which was also short but neither compared with the good trails at Wolf Pen. We will be going back because it is only five hours from the house so it is a good area for a weekend trip. When we learn the area, we will try for some of those hundred mile days unless we find some trails we love and just have to go over and over the same trail. I guess you can rack up 100 miles doing that. Give me some of those good trail numbers and I will file them away for the next trip. Gotta go to Mena first though.

Thanks again

Ted

Hey TexMud,

If you know any of the lodges on the east side of 259 that have openings to the trails, I would really appreciate that information. I would also like to know some of the trail numbers that you believe are good to ride.

Thanks in advance

CANOEMAN23,

We won't be going this weekend, but may on Easter weekend (long weekend). I'm sure we are going to wpg in May. Since you have only ridden the west side of 259, what is your opnion of the trails on that side? I thought they were kinda boreing. TexMud says they are more interesting on the east side. Unless you or someone else who rides the west side can tell me about some good trails on the that side, I am going to the East side next time.

Guys....I am going to Broken Bow this weekend...I usually stay at the Whip-Poor-Will also....but I am just making a day trip this time. I am suppose to meet Rubiguy up there. He says he has only ridden on the east side of 259 and I have only ridden on the west side. I hear the east side is more challenging...I guess I will find out....maybe we'll see you guys up there.

i have an old section of a weyerhouser map that includes all the trail numbers. if anyone is interested i'll try to scan it in somehow.

TEXmud,

It seems like your the man to talk to about gps stuff, hope you've got time to answer a few questions I have. My wife just let me buy a Garmin GPS V after we got lost near WPG at midnight on our first trip there about a month ago. You mentioned that mapsource Metroguide has some of those trails on it, my GPS V came with the mapsource city select which I thought was the equivelant except that it supports the autorouting function of my GPS V. I loaded the maps for the WPG region and those trails didn't show up. I guess my question is. do have to get the metroguide and how much more stuff is in it, and does it support autorouting on my GPS V. thanks, Oh, WPG was a lot of fun, going back soon. any suggestions on where to ride next time. (Not too difficult my wife rides double with me). I am riding fun wheeler in lakeport this weekend, any suggestions, is it worth it?

TexMud, Okbow

Thanks for the help. I turned the map detail to high on my GPS V with the City select maps loaded for the WPG area and no trails showed but the county roads did. I guess I will have to pickup a copy of metroguide or topo to get those. kind of dissappointed because I thought city select was supposed to be the equiv to metroguide for the autorouting units like the GPS V. oh well. what kind of mapping software do you guys use? expertgps or something like that?

Hey TEXMud,
I would apprecitate some of those waypoints and routes for the gps, that you have for the honobia and three rivers areas. I sent you an email wanting to know where you got the map of those areas cause I could sure use one. So if you could send me that info i would appreciate it. Send to chairman68@yahoo.com

thanks

I have two emails if you can respond to the chairman68@yahoo.com. I have a Garmin gpsmap 76s. Thanks for the help.

TEXMud
Hey buddy I appreciate it a lot and I do have Mapsource. Again thanks. What version of Mapsource are you using? I have 4.13 and cant open the mapsource file. What program do you use to open the dxt. file?
Thanks
Okbow68

Posted by: okbow68

creekrider,
In your gps V you should have the option on your mapsource options to show more or less detail on the loaded maps that you have in your gps V. I am not sure if the trails will show up on metroguide maps however. You might have to get the mapsource Topo maps before they show up.

Posted by: okbow68

TEXMud,
Thanks I updated and got the map to open, I thought i had the latest update but didn't. Those look like some pretty good trails that you've routed out there. Thanks again.

Creekrider,
Unfortunately I have to disagree with TEXMud about the topo maps. To me they show a lot more detail, including the smaller roads. If you dont want all the detail you can always turn it down on your gps, but if you want it its not there on roads and recreation, or metroguide. I have Topo and U.S. Roads and Recreation. Its really all about what you like, you can go to Garmins website here http://www.garmin.com/cartography/

and use the map viewers side by side to see the difference in the two. Either way you will be a lot better of than with the basic base map that is standard in your gps.

Later guys

I stand corrected about the trails. I wish they could be both seen on my gpsmap76s at the same time but I have to choose one or the other like the etrexs. Here is a side by side pic comparing Topo and US Roads and Recreation, it is centered on your "camp4" on the map that you sent me

Do you have any maps you have ridden of trails around Clayton, I hear there are some nice ones around there. I would be interested to see the route you have chosen on the K trail between the lake area and Clayton, that would be a cool ride.

I guess you cant put pics in these messages like that well click on my pics to the left and I put it in there.
Let me know what you think

Creekrider,
I have Mapsource Topo and Roads and Recreation, and Easygps, and Street Atlas USA, but they might not show much if any more than what you have.
The GPS V will probably be the gps that I buy next for my wifes car since it has auto routing.
I just like TOPO better then Roads and Rec I find it more useful for hunting and such.

At last i find some information on ATV riding near Beavers Den. Planning some tent camping
and was reassured there wasnt much ATV riding near the Park area. Thanks guys , hope i can find all
these places you have mention . Be safe !

Does anyone know of an RV park in the Broken Bow area with direct access to the trails for ATV's?

Thanks,

Pete

Hello Everyone
I am also interested in riding in this area, I only live about an hour and 15 minutes south of Broken Bow. I do have a couple of questions and would appreciate any help ya'll could give me:

The 25 dollar fee, it that per 4 wheeler or per rider?

Just like Pete, I would like to know if there is anywhere you can camp with a 5er so that you can ride right out on the trails and do not have to trailer every day?

It appears that the trails are just north of all of the parks and camping areas, it this correct and are the maps of the trails available online?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks
Clint

TexMud you seem to be the one with ALL the information. Do you have any information on public trails close to wister lake. How do you know if you have to have the permit to ride on them? Well how bout I just say any information you have on trails in this area would be greatly appreciated. Trail entrances, permits (where to get them) parking and loading and unloading areas. ANYTHING ... HELP.

Posted by: kisses1967

By same rules do you mean that you can ride there? And what highway is this off of?
