The Murphy to silver city trail (THE BACK WAY) IS a good all day ride with some more technical spots as well as just trail.

hen you come through the panhandle, check out the areas around the Silver Valley. I believe Silvercountry.com still has maps available for atvs. We have miles and miles of trails and the maps rate them for difficulty. The only problem with riding in June is some of the trails are still full of snow in the higher elevations.

I stand corrected, apparently silvercountry doesn't have a web site anymore. Try highmountainatv.org to order a map. Look in the general atv info at the bottom of the page.

up near Fairfield there are some great places to ride. well right now they are even better places to snowmachine.

I have also ridden alot in the hills south of Twin Falls. I even seen some 4 wheelers up near magic ski area a couple weeks ago when I went up there to snow machine.

Soda Springs has a few really nice places to run 4 wheelers and snowmachines.
Here around Pocatello we have some pretty good places to ride as well.

we're lucky to live in a state that still appreciates the outdoorsman

Wallace is a nice place to ride. We've been to their jamborees and the trails are awesome. highmountainatv.org is where you can get some info on trails. The palisades area east of Idaho Falls is nice also.

I live near Twin Falls in southern idaho. My wife and I will be taking 10 days to drive up through the panhandle and then down through western Montana in June. If you have a great trail please let me know so we can make sure and ride it. We enjoy technical trails more than anything.
thanks

thanks natertot. I've already run that trail in my jeep, I used to guide in that area. The tin cup cutoff at the diamd d ranch below pineon peak is ok too. What i'm looking for is a trail similar to the boulder city trail near ketchum. I did the trail in my jeep and it was TOUGH!!! Doing the trail on the atv was still wild. If you've never done that trail let me know, we may have to hook up and run it.

thanks again

Sharpie, what are the roads like getting to Elk City? Paved or gravel? How difficult would you rate the trails? Are these trails aroad that jeeps can travel or actual "atv" width trails? Can Elk City be accessed from the Montana side or do I have to go around to White Bird
thanks

sharpie, thanks for the detailed info. My wife and I will probably go in late june or early july and try some tails, are there any specific challenging areas you could tell me about?

While looking at the topo maps it looks like there is a trail from Dixie down to the Main salmon river that may be fun. How is the road going in from grangeville to elk city? I'll be hauling a 28' toyhauler and would hate to have some 5mph winding mountain roads to deal with. If you are free and interested maybe you could ride with us for a day?

Sharpie, you are well spoken and polite. Are you by chance home schooled?

If you don't mind riding with an old man (i'm 29, my redheaded wife is 27) we'd be happy to ride with you. Thanks for all the great info.

Jerry

We will be having Pocker runs that time of year. Most are put on by one of the local Lake resorts (they treat us very good)we also put some on ( Flathead ATV lose nit club of about 25 ) Most of the poker runs are very sicnic rides with some technical spots to.Most start at Lake Merry Ronan (spelling?) witch is west of Lake Flathead not to far from Kalispel.

I like to go up to stanley area and take the loon creek trail. It is fun and somewhat technical to ride and goes through some very pretty areas. Another one is to go to The Yankee Fork dredge through the back way. I have done that ride and it is about 50 miles one way but very much worth it. The turn off is about 17 miles one the boise side of Highway 21 at the bradley boyscout turnoff. North side of the road. go back until you see the pinion peak turn off and go from there it is real great.

There are miles and miles of trails near Spencer and Kilgore Idaho. I have ridden nearly everything near Stoddard creek we are going to start trying the trails near Kilgore this year. Great camp ground at Stoddard real ATV friendly but the trails arn't real technical there are some good climbs in a few areas. Some of the trails betwen Kilgore and Duboise are tougher according to some friends of ours. Also lots of trails in the Big Hole range and Falls creek area.

How about some more info on the jamborees.

I'm off from June 23rd to August 30th and would love to have my boys experience the fun.

Dates, places, websites, camping info? We usually tent it, so we like campgrounds with showers (or else the tent starts smelling like wet dog after a few days )

Thanks!

idahopraire I dont know as many trails as Sharpy but I have camped on Newsome creek Hunting Moose in that area and there are some very fun trails the old elk city road cuts through that area . Lots of fun . There is a sattelite salmon hatchery there and the drive up is gorgeous . Take lots of film!
Take a fishing pole so when your butt gets tired you can wade in Newsome creek .

magruder pass from elk city to montana. 113 miles gravel road. I traveled through there last summer. not a bad road if you have about 5 hours to travel it. I think the sign said it takes like 10 or 12 hours. its not that long. road is paved into elk city. there is a nice hot spring in there to. sorry for butting in.

Posted by: sharpie

hey, elk city all the way. you could go a week and not hit all the trails. i spend almost every weekend of the summer up there, and i know the trails like the back of my hand. awsome place. i live close to the area and have no problem bein a tour guide. when in the area, dont forget to bring your chain saw.

to get to elk city from montana i would head over the lolo pass onto highway 12 to kooskia, then turn onto highway 13 and follow it to where highway 14 begins. then just follow 14 the rest of the way up. roads paved, and theres 12 miles in the middle of the trip that is narrow, but on both sides of that the road is great. if your in south i would follow highway 95 north to grangeville, then hit 13 down to 14. jsut get a map and decide what shorter. i've never been on the gravel road that goes over to montana, but i do know if your pullin a trailer then i would definantly not reccomend it. the sceney is great. i would guess that its about 3 and a half hours from montana, but thats jsut a guess. as for the trails, you have everything. theres old logging roads (easiest) which are nice and wide, there are some trails you could get a jeep on(also easy trails), but it would be a tight squeeze, but for the most part the trails are narrow, some are tight for my foreman. there are some tough trails that are still a challenge for me, mostly the un-maintained ones. any trail that is maintained i would say are medium difficulty. almost every time i go on a trail ride up there i end up sawing at least one tree out of the trail. most of my favorite trails are ones that i discovered by mistake, so if you ever get the chance, explore.

that sounds like a great time to ride, jsut beware, chances are that the higher elevations will still have snow. last i heard there was 7ft up there. i dont know that some of the best trails have names. some places to check out are anderson butte, elk summit, american eagle mine, american river, and many more. i've been having great luck finding these maps here if you like long rides, you can ride down american river, over the hills and throught the woods to american eagle mine, to anderson butte, and back to american river. about an 8 hour ride, 80miles, good scenery, some challenging sections, lots of up and down, my personal favorite. if you enjoy a challenge, theres a good spot to get muddy very near american eagle mine, and for a challenge, jsut look around. i've never had the chance to ride near dixie, so i reely dont know much about the area over there. the road up to elk city is no problem. nice, paved, easy. my family owns land up there so we jsut park our campers and always have a place to stay. sounds like fun riding with you. i better mention that i'm only 15 right now, got good grades and common sense so dont worry, i'm not an idiot. have fun.

so idahopraire, what kind of trails do you like anyhow? i'm shure whatever you like you can find at elk city. theres always some good mud, tons of hills, probably some good snow patches, lots of tough spots, and i'm not shure if its legal, but there are some fun places to ride in the river aswell. The first time i'll be up there is memorial day weekend, and because of the winter runoff, the trail along part of american river if flooded, making a very intresting and wet ride i can hardly wait to get up there this year. always fun.
