The one bad thing about winter in MN,as far as ATV's go, is a lot of trails close to us after Nov. Most of the snowmobile trails we ride all summer are off limits to us from November to the end of April, and the state lands are regulated much the same. And if an area is open to both, try riding when there are a lot of snowmobiles around. The ones who don't pull up and scream at you for 'ruining' their trails will just buzz by a couple of feet away at 70 - 90 mph to try and drive you off. Sounds harsh, I know, and I have nothing against sleds, it's just after years of winter riding, I have met only a scattered few sled riders that don't outright hate ATVs in 'their' areas. Wisconsin, on the other hand, has about 90 percent of their trails open to ATV use all year round, haven't tried there yet in the winter, so don't know how the sled riders there react to quads. Can't be as bad as the people I've run into here over the years. To be honest, now that my son rides with me all the time, I rarely ride in the winter anymore, too afraid of some a-hole buzzing us and hurting some one, or having my son hear some of the 'comments' I've gotten from sled riders.

Last year one of the metro clubs had a over night ride from Danbury to Iron River and return. 200 miles in January! Great ride! I will look for info if they are doing it again this year.
albabanshee - Those noise limits are imposed to ensure that the ATV's are welcome. Stuffing a sock in your muffler to get past the gate inspection is the equivelent to stealing the privilage to ride from the rest of us. And we don't appreciate it.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
I see the Washington Ramsey Anoka Jihad Crimson-Tide Riders cancelled their Iron River ride earlier this year.
Has anyone reviewed the liability of organizing a ride? With the litigation lottery even more prevalent today - What happens if someone gets hurt or killed? Is the "organizer", or Club responsible?
In skydiving we have to sign waivers that include everyone in the process - instructors, pilots, riggers, packers, the city, the airport - everyone.... And it specificaly transfers any award for damages back to the defendants just in case some judge decides to protect us from ourselves.
So if someone here organizes a ride, and there is a liability claim, does that organizer bare the brunt of some starving attorneys plea for justice and compensation?
All that being said, What are the options? Whats open all year in MN ? -
Would we consider Wisconsin or is the risk of being recruited into a CheezeHead to high for that?
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Hey Grady, Dave
Right, that axle was a pain in the rump - Thanks again for helping out. I replaced the internal retaining clip after that and so far so good.
Its "if your going to stupid - ya gotta be tough" LoL... A standard skydiving phrase that is universally applicable. My kids grew up with it and hopefully my grandchildren will too.
Hey - that immaculate Cat continues to annoy me. I've never seen a bike stay so clean when mine gets so baked on muddy! He must use a ionic charge or something to repel the dirt molecules - nothing else makes sense... Ya, MuskyMaster makes just about every ride I get on so you can expect both of us.
I continue to look for a semi-organized winter ride. I'll try and email some folks and see if their clubs are up to something that isnt posted. I liked having some methodology to where we were going to eat, fuel up etc. Makes the day more predictable. Again, count us in on another Opening Day ride. Anywhere - Anytime.
As far a local ride - How about Land-O-Lakes up by Hill City - Its open all year. I've been there in the summer, bugs, swamps, bears, a real hoot. Although I don't have any open weekends until after January1, 2K3.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Yo Grady - try to pay attention son....
I like this Mudboger Danbury ride idea - keep me in the loop eh.
Was out on Martin lake tonight. Open water on north end of the lake - 10 inches ice on the east, 4 inches on the West
Some 4wheelers pulling houses out along the east shore. My 500 with me weighs 1200 pounds. Havn't fallen through this year yet.
Your ice' may very - some sinking could occur - quickly.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Great! Where and when? I may have others to go also. -They will want to know if its a recreational ride or high speed - some bring wives or girlfriends (not both)....
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Hey guys-
My buddy and his girlfriend are saying yes for Saturday (2up) - the wife wants to go (2up), the college kid and the 13 year old each on there own. - We'll try to keep up as best we can. - thats 4 quads.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
So were on for tomorrow (Saturday) Lets confirm meeting at your place or at hillside -
Quads are loaded - just need to top of the diesel. Muskymaster will be following me.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Roger That! ETA 10AM - four quads on board two rigs
turn left heading 090 1 mile after hilltop - pro ceed 4 miles, ID quad on left - top of hill after field.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
well, that wasn't very smart-=
collar bone is broken, hip is badley bruised - some ribs bruised too.
next time - i skip the hill climbs.
came home to find out my kids were freinds with those killed yesterday in WBL crash. nobody happy here
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
WBL White Bear Lake, MN 4 killed in car crossing median on freeway - two were kids that were freinds of my kids.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
Mudboger -
A special thanks to Nicole for her aid. I was in pretty rough shape for a while and she helped me through it.
Posted by: WhoDatInDaMud
I'm still here... I have the 500HO stripped down now so I can do some welding to the steering support bracket. Doing everything one handed is a beech but I'm making slow progress. 2 weeks and I'll be back in the saddle. Just about everything is broken in/on the pod. Some glue and some duct tape will fix some of it... credit card will fix the rest...
Posted by: LEP7MM
WhoDat,
well said. I'm currently quadless, but hopefully will have a new machine so I can set up another ride for this spring. Any thoughts other than Nemadji?
Posted by: LEP7MM
I remember you. Couldn't forget.
My daughter moved in with me this summer so I had to ad a bedroom to the house. My employer has been going GUNG-HO with lay-offs also, so in part it was preparation for losing my job (hasn't happened yet). On the other hand, my wife has changed jobs, so I had to sell the Dodge to buy something more affordable to drive. Not to mention the Dodge was a lease vehicle and the mileage was getting in the red zone. So all together I sold the Vinson and my namesake (my Lone Eagle 7MM-08) to help curve the extra expenditures. Hopefully this spring Suzuki will have something attractive to offer. If not, then I may be leading the pack this spring with a new Kawi V-Force.
Be sure to check back in the spring to see where we may be heading for the 3rd annual get-together. If anyone has any other choices other than Nemadji, let me know.
Posted by: LEP7MM
if the ride happens again this spring, the same rules would apply.
I would not be responsible for anyone's injuries, unless of course their actions warranted a good a$$ kickin. But in the last 2 years, there have been no problems, and I wouldn't expect there to be this spring either.
We are there to enjoy the first ride of the year on the seasonal trails and we all ride at our own risk. If anyone has issues or decides to show up tanked, they will be asked to leave. We are all, (or atleast most of us) are responsible adults and should act and ride accordingly. It's all in fun. I would be there to ride regardless and anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
WhoDat,
I enjoyed the conversations we shared about your planes and different rides you've been on. I would sure hope you would join us again. Bring your cousin as well with that immaculate Cat he rides. The 2 of you have earned my respect in the way that you conducted yourselves. It's not every day someone has the privilege of meeting someone who is not only intelligent, but has an equal amount of common sense as well.
I haven't forgotten your quote: "You better be tough if you're gonna be stupid!"
Posted by: wheelinforlife
There is aton of trail up north that are open i know them all!
Posted by: MinnesotaRIPPER
Yeah, maybe it could work. Lets see how many people want to come.
Oh and if theres lots of snow I think you can count me out because Ill be sledin.
Posted by: MinnesotaRIPPER
The OHV park is open during the winter. The only downside is that you have to be out of the park 1 hour before sunset, and it gets dark real early this time of year.
Posted by: MinnesotaRIPPER
Some of the guys form ATVnation.com forums are planing a ride around the same time also. Maybe we could all just plan one massive ride?
We are thinking about the weekend after thanksgiving. And taking place at ether Iron Range OHV park or Danbury, WI.
So head over to the nation and contiue see if we cant all make one big ride.
Posted by: 86LTR
will my 2 strokes pass the noise test, I have a lt250r and my gf drives a blaster, they both have fmf powere core silencers. I would like to go, but dont want to drive up there and not pass the test. Is there any tricks to passing, I noticed fmf makes a silencer that is queiter, but that is 142 bucks from dennis kirk, and they dont have one for my lt.
anyway Ill figure something out and ride with you guys sometime.
Posted by: Scootter
""passed,but i had a sock in it,if " YEAH! IT WORKS!!!
haha
I am up for some riding, right now i dont have any buddies that do quads they are all streetriders.. always looking for more
Posted by: Scootter
So we going to do a ride soon for those w/quads and some time on their hands?

Send me an email and I will ride with you... depending on the snow depth i can ride a traxter or ds..
i am available most weekend. send me a message/email
Posted by: Scootter
MMM WARM WINTER IN MN! Glad i didnt buy a sled
Posted by: Scootter
So are you riding this weekend? I may tag along if its ok... And u can ride my Baja if u want
Posted by: Scootter
I really enjoy my Baja. I take it to the gravel pits in Fairbault, up to the OHV park and on trails too.. Itsa little wide, but I am a big guy and really enjoy it. It can go anywhere and when I do get stuck the Fiancee uses the Traxter to pull my ass out.
Posted by: Scootter
But absolutely u are welcome to ride it. I jsut got a new Bartending gig to help pay for wedding costs and stuff I think I will have next Sun off
Posted by: Scootter
The pits are kinda broing but they are only 30min away which is pretty nice.
I just put heated grips on the TRaxter.. pretty good stuff, but no snow to plow =(.
I dont think I have been to Danbury, I jsut got into Atv'ing last year and am really enjoying it... Except for the Dent I put in the old man's truck when I borrowed it..
<The Story>
Out at Hurricane Hills MX track.. Rainy Day.. Folding Aluminum Ramps to a relatively new Ram... Had trouble getting Baja up.. Not much traction.. I began Sldiing around on the ramps a bit, Rolled up and down a few times.. Tried a fourth time gave it more gas wheelied off the Tailgate with the Bottom A-arm landing on the rail w/ Frt tire on outside of bed... Result; LARGE DENT on bed rail!.. Bad day =(.
<End Story>
Anyways my truck is almost dead, and platinum engagement rings are expensive, but I should be able to borrow the dad's truck or at least a trailer anytime nextweekend or other times.. Would love to do some riding with you guys.
Later
Scott
Posted by: Scootter
haha crash stories rule! The worst thing about mine, is that it isnt my truck, but rather my dad's new one.... And he wasn't even pissed.. He jsut laughed and told me to wait until I have kids so he can laugh at me.
I will know tommorrow about sunday.. what time are u planning on meeting?
Posted by: Scootter
Luckily I have not crashed any street bikes yet.. That gets expensive and sore pretty quickly!
Posted by: Duderanch
Clark County is nice, (about 100miles of trails) and it is just a short hop from St. Paul on I-94. And they are open all year too!

Posted by: albaBANSHE
hmmm? my mojave cobra pipe passed, but i had a sock in it,if you can stick somthing in the silencer then take it out when in the park? ask people that have the same pipes how laod are they!
Posted by: albaBANSHE
well scoot we should gather people and set a date that will be suitable for most people and make sure the park is open that day!
I tryed the sock but it was boggy so i wont be riding the tecate so i will either have to bust out the non winter ready banshee or the winter ready 87mojave
Posted by: albaBANSHE
lets make it like any where from December 1-January 15 or somthing, i will have to ride the mojave my banshee is really really loud and it didnt come with stock pipes
Posted by: albaBANSHE

Im new to these forums but I know ALOT of places to ride anytime of the year..and this year seems to be the one for quad riding during the winter what do you guys say..lol not a damn bit of snow..Ive got a 2002 MX Shee, and a 2000 MX Blaster, and I know for a fact that they wouldnt pass any noise tests...so Id rather ride the local trails/pits/tracks etc..we should have a HUGE mx ride sometime this spring..Ive got 3 tracks being built this spring, local sized, ama sized that conjoins the local for its gates and finish line, and a woods/cross country style track that conjoins the ama sized track...and we have a 70X300 pole shed with 18' ceilings that ill be putting an indoor mx track in this winter...we should decide on something soon guys...this would be an awesome ride..Ive never participated in one before...later

Hey guys,
Bob here from Amery Wi, I got a 02 Bombardier Quest XT and a few trails around here but I'm originally from the twin Cities and since I know absolutely no one around here, I have nobody to ride with, id be interested in getting into one of your rides, let me know when and where and I'm there.
Posted by: COLD
Boring aint the word for it! I havent had a chance to ride anywhere else with my Bombardier, but rode Nemaji and general andrews state forest back in the early 90's when i was younger and had a faster machine, 1988 Honda trx 250r, wish I still had it. The gandy is open from st croix falls to siren if theres snowpack I might try that this year. I'm looking for someone to ride with, your only 35 min away from me, we should hook up sometime.

Hey Guys,
I would love the oppotunity to ride with an experienced group, I do always work on saturdays but my sundays are free, danbury is about an hour from me so count me in, I ride a stock Bombadier 650 Xt Quest that is all stock for now but a set of 27" Diggers are in its near future. I should haver mine back from shop this tuesday, any of you guys get involved with the local ATV pulls, I would like to do a few more of those I had a blast at the Amery Pull this summer.

Hey Mudboger,
This sounds like its going to be fun, been a while since I've been riding with anyone other than myself. My Ol'Lady is out of town as of today for 5 days and I'm free to do what ever the hell i want. I have to work on Saturday but I see no problem with meeting you on Sunday morning, I'm going to see what I can do about staying with some friends in Webster Sat Night. Are you guys going to do any partying on sat night, let me know I would be interested in having some fun. I hope my hands can hold up for a long ride I was out yesterday on the cattail and they seemed to bother me a bit, I had on the wrong gloves too. The "Posessed Mule" is running fine after its 1 year check up and I'm ready to roll. Looking forward to meeting you and the others and putting faces to some of the crazy names out here.
Cold,
P.S. Check out my website if ya want. New product for boaters and has some uses for ATV's too. www.stayncharge.com

Well I'm in for Sunday at 10:00 if your going to still be up to it after saturdays ride, Im planning on staying in webster, but will be doing a little drinking with some friends in Grantsburg Saturday night. I'm really excited to go and may have a couple of friends from work that may be interested in meeting us up there, I'm not sure if you want me giving out instructions to complete strangers where your place is so I was thinking if there is a common easy place to meet, I know danbury ok, like where the casino is....lol! Drop me a note on my email and I'll give you my phone number so maybe we can discuss a nuetral meeting point so I dont aimlessly wander into Canada looking for your place. I hope you dont mind a couple of extra riders, there decent guys and just have stock utility machines, but will understand if you are against it. Drop me a note asap and i'll get back to you.

I'm sorry to here what happened at the hill yesterday whodat, had mine almost come over on me on the hill across from the one you wrecked on, steep incline as i was coming down and engine braking was better that I thought it would be and ended up having to bail ASAP, good thing modboger's buddy was there spotting me cuz he kept the quad from coming over and wrecking a perfectly good windshield. Today was the first real run i had with my machine since i bought it a year ago and I had a blast. I will say the the Bombardier is a great work rig and handled very nicely on the trails but that hill crap kinda spooked me the way the machine handled it......very very heavy. I think ill stick to the trails and mud and plowing. Thank you Mudboger for your hospitality, I had a great time and I think Mark and Tim did too, I am looking forward to the next ride. Keep me in mind.

Hey Mudboger,
You guys gonna be riding next sunday? If ya are and dont mind a tag along let me know I'd be interested in another run. My body held up good during the last ride but it let me know it was abused a bit the rest of the week. I'm fully recovered now and ready for more. Drop me a note and let me know. Ya sound pretty excited about the new sport machine, hopefully things go well this year, if they do I'm going to treat myself to a baha 650 or that new preditor sounds interesting. that Kawi looks pretty mean too, anyway ill chat with ya later.

i cant get away this weekend but im open next sunday and would love to get back up to the danbury area again, I hope Mudboger and his buds are available next weekend cuz with out some guidance its pretty easy to get lost up there. Hey Scooter hows that baja through the woods Iheard its great for the dunes but not so good on the trail.
Posted by: COLD
Yeah the 12th, Mudboger was taking going the 11th and 12th but I work saturdays so sunday is open for me. we were 12 miles north of danbury and were riding trails near the hillside bar, rugged trails lots of fun. Scooter i would love to have the chance to ride your Baja, ill let ya take my quest for a spin. I like my quest its handles well on the trails but it is a little heavy for the hils and daredevil crap, I'll leave that stuff to the younger guys anyway. it plows snow like a beast! Just wish we had a little I love to plow with it, I end up clearing like a 1 acre parking lot at the house the Ol'lady thinks I'm Nuts, lol. Well all I can tell you guys about going next weekend is that I want to go pretty bad so expect me up there.

Hey Scooter,
I know how you feel about having an incedent while loading your ATV, Back in 1990 I had a brand new Kawasaki Bayou 350 (in 1990 that was as big as they got!) into the bed of my ranger pickup, I used to use a pair of 2x6x6ft boards to ramp up. I loosly placed them on the back of the pickup and was able to navigate up with no probs or worries except for this afternoon. I was almost up the ramp with my front wheels on the bed and the rear wheels still on the ramps, when one of the boards was kicked out, In a split second I had to decide to roll backward with the possibility of tipping over wrecking my pickup, the ATV and my body, or gass it and hope I can stop in time to not go thru the rear window of the pickup. I choose the later and was not able to stopp in time, I smashed out the rear window and my body flipped over the cab and I landed hard on the hood leaving a permanent impression of my butt in the hood. The crowd that had gathered around me was on the ground laughing, I was too. Other than my bruised ego and the hood and rear window of my truck, nothing more was damaged, I did create a nice story for the insurance man and soon recieved a bunch of money to be used to repair my truck, instead I drove it the way it was, put a piece of plastic in the rear window and bought a real ramp.........oh and I used the rest of the money to buy a used 1988 honda TRX250R, so things really actually turned out for the better. Wish I still had the Honda, geeez thoose things are worth there weight in gold, I sold the thing in 1991 for $2,000 to help pay for the beginnings of a new family, wish I could have found something else to sell. LOL. Later all hope ya enjoyed my story.

im still waiting for mudboger to get back to me as to what time he is starting to ride but i think its safe to say 11:00 am. We will probably meet at the hillside bar located 12 miles north of danbury on hwy 35. its on the left side just watch your odometer. Ill let you know or you will see his post as to what time he is starting. I have a few other crash stories I'll tell ya later scooter.

I was thinking of meeting all that want to go riding at the hillside bar 12 miles north of danbury on hwy35 at 10:30 TO 11:00 AM, let me know if this will work for all that might be thinking about going. Toaday sure would have been a great day to go riding, 50 degrees in january in Minnesota is unthinkable!! I know a few snowmobilers (that gave me a bunch of crap about buying an atv last year) that arent very happy about this weather. I say boo hoo whine whine whine ha ha ha. LOL Sure am glad I didnt let them guys talk me into a darn skidoo.

Hey guys just got a new set of gloves for sundays ride, understand its going to be a little cold this weekend. Should make for some good riding. I got rid of the windshield on the bomber, looks tougher now. Hey mudboger your going to have to take a look at my rig and give me some tips on the snorkle system, it looks to me like a piece of cake with very little cutting......i think.
I'm Thinking I would like to meet at the hillside no later that 11:00am, one of the guys from work here lives in luck and has a blaster I think he'd like to take out for a rip. I'm looking forward to at least one of those excellent bloody mary's at the hillside. Cya guys on sunday!!!!
Posted by: COLD
Hey Mudboger, My buddy Mike is still in the thinking mode but if he does come up it would be on his own. I'm going to hang out at the hillside until 11 and then head to your house. I can park the trailer where ever you want me too, let me know. Cya Sunday!!!!
Posted by: COLD
I can handle meeting at around 10 am but sunday is a no stress no pressure day for me so if I'm running a little late its because im taking my time. Its going to be COLD and i tend to move slower when its cold outside, but I promise not to be the slowest guy in the pack.......I hope.

The ride was a blast! Cant wait for the next run. Mudboger again I thank you and your Bro for your hospitality. The trails up there are a blast and I'm very please with my Quest's ability to hang. Mudstud it was good meeting you and your DS650, now I really want one of those, what an intimidating looking machine, with a very mean growl. We need to do this again soon, keep me posted on the next time you guys are riding.
