Cdalepaul, Scrub and Delancey are both whooped out near the campgrounds. It gets a little better several miles away from the camps. As far as I know neither has hot water. The campgrounds are nice places to set up at with the restrooms, running water and a Ranger to keep an eye on your stuff & keep the drunks from getting out of hand. The mud comes and goes quickly as the area is mostly sand. After a stormy weather pattern it is very wet for a couple of days but the water dries up and dust returns quickly in the sunlight. You can fly down the dry trails and all of a sudden you come up on a huge puddle at a low spot. Keeps you on your toes. As a local I have found some better areas {less whoops for me} that are closer to my house in Silver Springs. They have no campgrounds but we unload at friends homes near the areas. I avoid the campgrounds on holiday weekends especially to avoid the drunks and idiots. It gets a little too hairy for me. Coming from South FL either area will seem like quad riding heaven just for the sheer number of ridable acres in the forest. The trails are seemingly unending. Overall this area is great for riding and I feel very fortunate to live near the ONF. I just hope its popularity doesn't ruin it.

I was there Sunday, September 15, and rode about 30 miles. Have ridden plenty out there over the years. It was mentioned on this thread about Blue Sink, that's a good place to cool off. Another good place to take a swim is Well's Pond. If you use a GPS device, the coordinates are: 29 07.993 N & 81 49.900 W.

Rapdaddy, I have a few pictures of the Big Scrub area and trails if you want them. Also have a picture of Blue Sink.

RideRed420,,,,send me your e-mail address and I'll send some pics. Don't know how to do it otherwise.

I rode down that area a couple of weeks ago and it was real wet. The water was up to the top of my seat, had my knees on the seat and rode slowly onward, not knowing it was going to be such a long ride in the water. Was glad to see sand again. There is a campground on the east side of SR19, Lake Dorr Campground. Looks pretty nice. Don't know of one on the west side of SR19. When you get your GPS, check out maptech.com. You can move the cursor around and the GPS coordinates will be displayed for you to enter into the GPS device. Great way to go to an unknown area. I'll send you a few of the pictures I took of the Big Scrub area including the Big Scrub Campground. BTW, there is an outdoor shower at Big Scrub you can use but you'll have to wear shorts.

The GPS coordinates for Big Scrub are: N29 03.084 & W81 45.354
The GPS cooridnates for Lake Delancy are: N29 25.663 & W81 47.407
Camping is actually better at Lake Delancy but there are probably more hunters camping there during hunting season.

Posted by: BluRock

Be careful riding up here in November. Most hunters are resposnsible but there are few who give hunting a real bad name. November is modern gun hunting season and the campsites are usually full. I can ride in the ONF approximately nine months out of the year, I'll let the hunters have it for three months. You may want to try Croom for some camping and riding during hunting season. Either way, be careful.....

I've never been to Big Scrub.Where is it.and what kind of rideing is it.

Posted by: COTTS4x4

My group rides a lot in ocala. SOmetimes over by big scrub. Usually down 73 east of blue sink. Be careful starting sept 21st because thats when hunting season opens up there, it runs until mid january.

If you guys like mud and water I know where to ride in Ocala. THere is an area near the intersection of hwy 44 and 42. Go north on 42 and on the right there is a power substation and you can park there and ride quite a ways, its really wet! If any of you have 4x4s and want to meet up, we have a big group that rides weekly.

how is the scrub compared to lake delancy? I hear there is alot of mud and how is the camp sites there hot water showers?

Posted by: cdalepaul

i've been to delancy I just wanted to know which had a better campsite?

We were just up there on this last 3 day holiday a few weeks ago with my brother and his girlfriend, it's a really cool place to ride at, especially Blue Sink. We also met some pretty cool people to ride out with one night.

Posted by: RideRed420

Big Scrub is in Ocala National Forest (FL), its alot of trail riding and whoopdedos.

Posted by: RideRed420

Yeah, that was us Now I have to get one of those GPSs for his birthday. We are all planning a trip up there again in November, not sure exactly when yet. We're working on figuring something out for those 2 strokes, so that they can hang with the 4's for the long trails.

Preacherman: I'd like to see the pictures to, if you don't mind.

Posted by: RideRed420

Has anyone been to that other campsite that is down off of 42 and 19? It's supposed to have hot showers and a pool, but I havn't heard of anyone camping there.

Preacherman: I sent you a private message with my email.

Posted by: RideRed420

Thanks for the info Preacherman, we camped at Big Scrub last time, except everyone went over to the showers at like 1 in the morning...I've never heard men get such a high pitched voice. That water is like ice. I'd rather head down to Blue Sink

Just got my gps.i got the etrex-venture.it's pretty nice.look forward to breaking it in up there.

(DAK61399)-we will let you know when we plan on heading that way.

I've been trying to get a map for the ONF area, we usually camp at Big Scrub, and I was wondering if anyone has the general GPS coordinates for the campsite???

Posted by: RideRed420

Glad to hear you guys had a good time, we can't wait to go up there. Now that we have that GPS, we already have the coordinates for Wells Pond, Delancy, and Big scrub. We've been going riding up in Palm Bay...but it'll probably be getting shut down soon, last time we went up there, they had some of it blocked off, and someone had shot up all the signs for the factory out there...someone always has to ruin it for everyone else, but oh well. Ocala's worth the drive. We're going in Nov. but that seems like such a long way away...atleast it'll be cooler. Is it usually wet up there around that time or is it dryer?

Preacherman: Thanks for the coordinates

Me and mt friends do, but usually Oct to May only. Too hot during the summer. We also spend time at Croom during the winter.

Big Scrub is a great home base for the weekends. We are usually there about every other weekend or so and come in late friday afternoon and stay till sunday evening. You can usually find us parked up front along the 588 side. We are in a 30' Cruise Air Motorhome pulling a 16'trailer and have 2 identical Raptors. Always looking to meet new friends to ride and camp with.

We spent the weekend out at Big Scrub and had a great time !! Weather was nice and the trails where not bad, even for the amount of rain...there was very little mud, though there is plenty of it if you know where to find it. We kept to the trails SW and SE of the campground and ran about 70 plus miles for the weekend. Nothing exciting happened except for a truck stuck in a large hole and being extracted by a couple of vehicles...that was the extent of the excitement. We didnt see any hunters which was good. We did run out to Well's Pond and took a little dip...was very very nice there. Campground was not busy...maybe 75 quads at the most, but once you got out on the trails you thought you where alone for the most part.

We are heading out to Big Scrub to camp and ride this weekend 10/04 thru 10/06...anybody heading that way we will be camped in the front row parallel to 588. Look for a 30' Cruise Air Motorhome with 2 black and red identical Raptors. Should be a nice weekend, unless that new storm heads too close for comfort. If that happens we will be postponing until the following weekend. If you need directions or whatever, feel free to give me a call...easiest way is my cell phone 352-572-0800.
