Its held the last 2 wk ends in Janurary. There is no longer alot of 120 mph riding, the DNR are usually out in FULL swing on these wk ends and will take anyone drunk to jail, whether they are in a car, truck, quad or snowmobile. Bill

Ecorman, im a ice fisherman,so we will respectfully disagree on the ice issue. I have gone to tip-up town about 5 times so far,and man,WHAT A BLAST.You will see 8 thousand lb 4x4 trucks/with attached campers EVERYWHERE.So I hardly think that a 600lb quad and rider will even put a dent in the ice? You are very correct, there are thouands of people/riders at tip up town. But it is very CAREFULLY patroled.Even with all the folks and riders on the ice,its still one of the safest riding events in the state.I do respect your not wanting to go though, Shucks,I was going to ask you to go to? Bill

Right now,im giving it some serious thought.I need to find out what my friend Ramone and Bill are going to do,if they go,I go, Bill

Posted by: Bill.Ciliberti

Wild Turkey, if we go,I will let you know a wk in advance. We can all get together and meet somewhere and get a little riding in, Bill

scottbl99, yah, your right.I got stopped a few yrs back for riding double on my 99 Sportsman 500cc 4x4.My friend Dan and I were headed out on the ice to our favorite fishing spot.We were NOT riding in a reckless or dangerous manner,we just wanted to get out to our fishing spot.DNR pulls me over and gives me the riot act on riding double.I told him I see nothing wrong with me riding double to my fishing spot and such a huge ATV,he AGREED.I could'nt beleive he did'nt fine me,I got lucky, Bill

chrisjack, there is a huge carnival on the ice. There is a softball tournament on the ice, there is a fishing tournament on the ice,a huge beer drinking tent on the ice, snowmobile races. There is alot more to.Tip UP town is held the 3rd and 4th ''wk ends''[sat and sunday] of Janurary.Alot of 4x4 quads out there. If you are on a 2wd quad, you had better have studs or chains, Bill

I would like to go.. i need some more info. I live in Lincoln (about 30 miles south of alpena. about 30 miles north of tawas.) I was wondering what kind of events go on here. Also, are there a lot of sport quads there.. do you use studded tires? When is it? Let me know please. Chris

HI! I'm back in town... And just how would an individual of your stature know that the DNR would haul someone of a lower stature, into jail... Don't answer that! I'm pickin' with you... I'm not goin', Bill. Don't like ice riding... Not when there's ten feet of water underneath... :0) Chuck, Suzuki KQ 300, GPS & lunch...

The thickness of the ice is not the problem. Ice and brakes are a problem. Somehow, I don't get a really warm feeling when I think of driving a six hundred pound four wheeler on ice, while there's four hundred snowmobiles capable of one hundred miles per hour and three thousand pedestrian, walking in the same area and you call this fun... Major accident waiting to happen. Just don't want to be a party to it... However, I have gone through the ice before. So don't tell me about thick ice... :0) Chuck, Suzuki KQ 300, GPS & lunch...

To all going to tip-up town couple things you may want to know. the don'ts are :no riding on snowmoblie trails[DNR have trail maps for quads to ride on just go and ask] :no riding on the sides of the roads not even up on the snow [you will get a ticket $70.00] :dont even think of riding double [$70.00 ticket] the rest are just go out on the ice and have a blast once in a while some one starts up an oval race somewhere near the tip-up area. If you plan on getting a room in houghton lake forget it you might get one in west branch just south of there.

Posted by: scottbl99

The ice is almost 2 feet thick at this time so parking is no problem ,I sugest trying to get a room in Westbranch just south from there, dont even think of finding a room in town ,most rooms are booked a year in advance. AS FOR PARTYING hit the LIMBERLOST bar it rocks there but get there early or you have to wait outside to get in.

Hey this is a little off the subject, but if any of you guys live close to Lake St. Clair they race quads, dirtbikes, and snowmobiles out there. I went there is past sunday, and I had a blast. Just something to think about, since houghton lake is so far away. At least for me it is. Oh and chrisjack if you do stud your tires, don't just use the screws, use the studs that they use for snowmobile tracks. They hook up great.

Is anyone going to TipUp town this year. For those of you that aren't familiar, it's on Houghton Lake in Michigan, right off of I-55. It's a festival on the ice, There's a bunch of tents, ranging from craft tents, to "warm up" tents, to beer tents, etc... It's mostly snomobiles on the ice, but there are usually a bunch of quads, too. Thanks to the beer tent(stupid idea), there's usually an abundancy of sloshed snomobilers pushing 120mph on the lake. That sucks, but it's a big lake. I have mixed emotions on the whole occasion, but I'll probably go anyhow. If anyone else here is going, let me know, maybe a few of us could meet up for a hot chocolate and some riding.

It's somewhere in January. Nobody can say for sure, because it's hard to predict the thickness of ice.

Posted by: WildTurkey

Once the ice is thick enough, you can park earth-mover trucks on it. I hardly think your quad is gonna break it.

I'm sorry to hear you feel unsafe on ice. But I do agree I feel a bit unsafe about the snowmobile/beer-tent combo. The only incident I've heard of with someone going through the ice at TipUp Town, was a Chevy Suburban that went too far out onto the lake. The rear end went through, all the way up to the roofline, but the front end stayed up. Snowmobilers were using the roof as a ramp. My Brother-in-law was there to see it. You just gotta be selective where you go. Next to shore is a bad place to be hanging out in a heavy vehicle, and wandering out to the middle of the lake is a bad idea, too. Being that you're afraid to venture onto ice in fear of it breaking, with your 600lb. quad, I'm guessing that you must weigh about 10,000 lbs. Time to diet, man!

Only about 2-3 more weeks. Anyone going?

Posted by: WildTurkey

If you think you're going to be there, describe what you all ride, Maybe a bunch of us can find each other there. My wife and I both ride Warriors. Mine's a white and blue 99 w/ no stickers, and a BIG GUN exhaust. Hers is a grey and blue 98, bone stock.

Posted by: WildTurkey

Good reply, scottbl99. I didn't even think about warning anyone about those things. My wife(girlfriend at the time) and I got busted riding on the sides of roads, where the snomobile's ride. The cop escorted us home, then told us that it was illegal. Then he said that, had it been a different cop, the quads would probably been confiscated and impounded. This cop was pretty cool about it. I might not be going to TipUp, now. Something unexpected has suddenly popped up.

Yep, you can drive right onto the ice, it's what everybody uses as the parking lot. And it's totally legit. Keep in mind, if your car breaks though, and sinks(which is VERY uncommon there), your insurance WON'T cover it. You might wanna find a motel room outside of town, it's gonna be pretty occupied around the lake.

When does it start, I always wanted to check it out,We have a cabin just south of WestBranch thats not to far away. I think this will be yhe year.

Posted by: Kirk1

My wife and I were thinking about going up, and bringing both our 4-wheelers. We have no idea where to park the truck and trailer once we get there (on the ice?), and where to stay. Any ideas or info would be appreciated.

The closest motel room we could get was at the Quality Inn in West Branch, for $74 / night. I think it was one of the last couple of rooms there. The Super 8 next door had rooms available, but they wanted $99/ night !!! Anyway, can't wait to get out of here for a couple days !!!
