Depends on what you want out of it. Each is good in certain areas.

I'm sticking with Arctic Cat, as I've had a 500i since 2002, and it has been extremely reliable. Five years of farm work, and I had one fouled spark plug, and one broken axle (my fault, tried to goose it with a log jammed between the rear wheels and a trailer full of firewood behind - snapped the tip off of the axle)

AC is probably the best rough ground crawler. Grizz and Zuki, the only other big utes I've ridden, have better handling, but not quite as good rough ground capability.

Truth is, they're all very good at just about anything. See who will give you the best deal, and you'll be happy.

There's no "Best atv". There's only "best atv for me"... That being said... Please list the following and we can help guide you towards your next quad.

1. Riding experience
2. past bikes owned
3. usual riding locations
4. what type of riding do you want to do "most" of the time
5. what's your budget

If you spend the 4k and trade in the sportsman, you should be able to get most of the big bore quads out there. So let's go thru a list of things you want... and we'll eliminate some of the quads that don't have the features you want...

Just answer yes or no to the following.

1. Does the bike need to be efi?
2. Does it need to have 4wd?
3. Does it have to have diff-lock?
4. Do you plan to go mudding a lot?
5. Do you plan to trail ride a lot?
6. Do you want something bigger than a 450cc?

The best ATV is whatever one I am riding.

the best ATV in your situation is the best deal you can locate on a quad that hasn't been neglected or abused.

Impossible to say 'what is best'. perhaps the best quad in 02 was x brand, but in 04 y brand had a better quad than the 02 x brand, but not better than an 04 x brand!

In that price range, ... ?

Grizzly 350
Raptor 250
?
?
?

The answer to his question is really simple, too bad its so expensive. He wants to know what the best ATV is, ... its the new Arctic Cat Thunder Cat 950. That much power makes it the best, no matter what else is in the mix.

modify all you want, I'm all for it. wasn't being defensive; you didn't see the "!!!'s"? As far as reliablity - after three years, over 3800 miles, and dozens of riders of all ages including four teenage nephews I still have zero issues with mine, and it is all completely stock. I hope everyone has the same luck with theirs that I have had with mine.

Whatever feels good to you. There has been some Polaris issues latley, but im not sure why. Mabey it was abused? Try another Polaris if you like them. Arctic Cat has been A+ for me

probly b/c i like to modify anything! there isnt too many 329cc that can turn 27 inch tires to good in the mud. and dont get so defensive, it was only a joke, there buddy!! about the only thing hondas are best at is reliability and some tight trails!!! and that artic kitty is best at ground clearance!! and as far as mods some folks just like it!! have a good day!!

Arctic Cat's new 2008, 366cc looks very interesting:
100lbs lighter than their 400 (which is really only 376cc)
10" ground clearance
IRS
$100 - $1300 cheaper than their 400

Posted by: acpower

id opt for the new 2008 Arctic Cat 366. Gonna be the best ATV for the money you can find in that price range.

I love my Polaris - but just buy what you like and feels good to you - every brand has thier issues

I bought 2000 sportsman 500 used and i have had problems with it. I was wondering if i just got a bad apple or what is the best utility atv.

Posted by: Dromanyshyn

I ride maybe once every two weeks for about 6 hours. The only atv that i owned was a sportsman 500. I normal ride on trails. My budget is 3000 to 4000

Posted by: yotatrailrunner

New the only thing i can think of is a honda recon or something in that size range.

Posted by: kulow

well what type of problems are you having. might be an easy fix or cheap to repair. i have had 3 polaris quads without a single problem real good quads imo. now i have 2 kawasaki 650i quads also have not had any problems. i like them real well to

Posted by: vinson27

Somewhere above the $3000 to $4000 range was mentioned. If it were me, I would try to get a deal on a new or last year's new leftover Suzuki Eiger.

Honda 125M Three wheeler you could launch it into space, let it fall back into the atmosphere, splash into the ocean, change the plug and oil and it'll still start right up!!! LOLYou can't kill these bikes!
