I would say a used 05'-06' King Quad or a Cat V2, I think both of those are pretty good pics and have all the items you listed. You can generally find The kings brand new in the 6 grand price range. I would say the new King powered cat but I doubt you would be able to find a used one and as I recall they are priced like can-am's are when comparing new machines.

Finally got my dad interested in ATV's. I'm a sport guy, and my dad is interested in a Utility.
This is what he is looking for...
1) 500+cc
2) Electric start will pull cord backup
3) Independent rear suspension
4) 4X4 with the 2X4 lockout
5) He likes the floorboards on the AC's
6) Here's the kicker....He wants a model a year or two old because he can't see spending 8G's on his first ever quad.
Can you guys throw me a few models we can look into that would fit his requirements? THANKS

Why? Because he didn't agree with the "thinks he knows everything, AC is the best for everything" catterman?

Arctic Cat 500 or 650 is what I would say. It has all the stuff you said. However, I don't know about the other manufactors, but the pull cords are jokes. I have NEVER been able to pull start my H1. My batter has never gone out on me forcing me to do it, but I have tried several times just for fun and there is no way I could ever use that to get it started. 2006 H1's are going in the $5k+ range.

No, I have nothing against Polaris, I used to ride them (Until I sat on a AC

My comment was made strictly at Fred as a joke, he is actually a friend of mine and I am giving him some greef in good humor. Him and I go way back...

And when did I say AC is the best for everything?

Why isn't anyone recommending the 660 Grizzly? It has everything T&C needs plus the most reliable belt tranny in the business, excellent non-linked brakes, 2500 Warn for $69, full 2 year factory warranty, plenty of power, more aftermarket stuff than any other machine. The tippy issue is way over rated and can be totally cured with wheels and tires on the money you save. And by far the most compact big bore ute. My vote for the most machine for the money out there.

What trucks spin 20% then lockup? I lock in my hubs (live axle on ATV's, not needed) and shift into 4x4. Bam it's in, can't say I'd like it to spin 20% then lock up. Sounds a little rough on the drivetrain.

sportsman 500HO. all that stuff you said. plues in amazing 4x4 system.

the floor board on them are awsome!

i can start my buddys with the pull starter.

Polaris has the best ride of any IRS machine.

there 4x4 system work kinda like a truck. when you put the switch too 4x4, the front wheels dont engage until the rears spin 20% faster then the front ones. then they lock in fully. no limited slip there.

its a great and simple system.

the 500HO will pull a house down.

since the 500HO has bin polaris's best selling quad for quite some times there is so meny great deals on them.

last week in the paper, 2004, 210 miles, camo, winch, 4000

so check out hte paper or swap sheet!

good luck to your dad!

im sorry but your slightly confused.

the polaris sytmes works just like most trucks, and the trucks seem to plow fineBR>
odd isent it????

I have never had any problems the times I have started my Polaris SP500HO using the pullcord. Maybe Catterman needs to bulk up a little and build some strength in his arms. BTW...I have never had to use the pullcord due to a breakdown or battery failure but just to make sure it works properly. Whatever quad your Dad decides on will be okay cuz they all make good products.
