I would not run a 5w-30 oil unless it doesn't have "Energy Conserving" on the round API label on the rear of the container. Most oils in that range have moly which is said to cause the wet clutch in atv's and motorcycles to slip. It's not proven but there is enough evidence to say it does. To be safe...use a 10w-40 oil as most all of them are not rated "Energy Conserving".
A good oil for your machine would be Shell Rotella T 15w-40. That is what I used in my 95 Kodiak that I used to own. It is rated for wet clutch applications and being a diesel rated oil, it's less prone to "shear" in the transmission.
Go to the forum section at Bobistheoilguy.com and search the motorcycle lubrication section and you will find a wealth of info on oil.

i know that you have a rancher too, waht oil do you use in yours.. i just added some 10w-40 to it and it seems ok.. what would you recoment?.. i know no energy conserving oils but waht else?

I would run a non synthetic motor cycle oil, simply because you dont know if that engine is sound. You can prob run any grade gas. I had a 94 honda fourtrax 300 and ran whatever, so your all set there.

Thanks for the quick replies all......I had one other question for ddrumman2004....right where my oil goes...think the crank case if I'm right makes kinda like a clicking sound that isnt loud but just wondering if that was normal for a kodiak?
