Check out the helmet radios from Collett at "www.collettcommunicators.com". Collett Radios
We have been using these for years and they work great. Great for keeping tabs on everyone, the leader can let the others know what is ahead. Can help the kids to learn riding with voice help through places.

Yes, the Colletts are up to a 2 mile range with a two channel available. They work great since they are voice activated.

i think he was refering to a marine (waterproof/resistant) CB radio
if you get a regular CB,,,it will be toast unless you dry it in somehow

I doubt that these little radios would ever be able to reach far enough to disturb someone in the water or on the shore. But that's just my opinion. I don't know anything about the FCC but are they just going to mail a complaint and ticket to some anonymous quad out running some where? A radio ,to my knowledge, has no ID. A radio is going to work with out personal information input. Thanks for the legal information about marine radios. Scary, but I think they have better things to worry about IMO. I was thinking you could run them on a different channels anyway.
marine uses VHF (organized and should only be used by boaters) (25 watts of power,,,or about 10 mile radius on open water)
CB is citizens band (UHF) and is fair game for anyone/anything (5 watts of power,,,legally)

I can relate to that post
I used to have a huge mast on my house with a nice starduster antenna hooked to a nice base unit with a linear.
Used to talk to people in Chicago from Connecticut on a stormy night. They can be fun....

You should look at the Garmin Rino Garmin Rino. It is a little more expensive but it has it all, GPS, Two-Way Radio, Mapping, Tracking, Water Proof, etc. You can also see a buddy on your screen as they move if he or she has one too. I use mine with a firefox earbud. The Rino allows you to plug in a voice activated earpiece which is nice b/c you never need your hands to talk. There are several different models of Rino's. I got my Rino 130 brand new on EBay and it works great and I saved about $80.00. Garmin just came out with two 500 series Rinos that have a twelve mile range on the two-way radio.

Actually some of the new walkie talkies are more watts than a CB radio and actually will talk as far as having a CB with a Big antenna. As for helmet I used a headphone that wraps on your ear and has a mic extending down. It works ok for awhile untill your ear starts to hurt. It came with the walkie talkies. These are the ones I got Walkie Talkies . Now for a cb I'm sure it could be done but I don't see any advantage unless you get a big whip antenna on there and I don't know how that would work because antenna usually need metal to attach and there isn't that much on a ATV.
Good Luck

I think they have waterproof CB radios... I would definatly look into it. I doubt a regular CB radio would last to long so that is definatly something to consider. Most of the ones I've search for were alot more expensive than the new waterproof "walkietalkies" .. so thats something to consider also. Handheld would be definatly be the way to go. You can get a mounting bracket of some kind or put them on your body easily (cheap...no cost). Forget the regular truck CB's...To big and good luck mounting that. I don't know...I think the cost all added up and you'll be spending more than the $69 I showed you for the waterproof "walkietalkies" with included mic/speaker headset. CB's are getting out dated too. Who uses them really any more?I hear other people all the time on my "walktalkie"..so you are connected to the outside world if you want or you can go private. Try doing that on a CB. The GMRS, or FRS radios are the way to go. JMO.

yes, the stardusters were a nice antenna. but never get the imitations. the only thing about them is after a while the top of the antenna will bend. and also, u gotta be careful with them linear amps, i totally wrecked my old radio from cranking up a linear to high. so then i got the galaxy which is such a nice radio.

I am needing a CB radio to keep in contact with my significant other while trail riding. We've tried small walkie talkie type radios, range sucks and a pita to use.(Let alone you can't hear them with a helmet on) I am terrible at searching, and couldn't find anything covering durable radio communication. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the replies, the midland is more what I am looking for, I am in a Jeep alot of the time and need CB capability, the Collett radios are more for short distance, closed channels correct?

My fiance and her son are on quads, I am currently in a jeep,(soon to be on a quad). We are in an area with many wheelers and few atv'ers, these are all good suggestions but I would also like to be able to talk to the outside world. Thanks-

Truck central nailed it. I am looking for on the cheap. I do need to communicate with regular citizens band, ham would be bitchen but no one else I run with uses it. Right now the plan is to run a regular cb, antenna and possibly a helmet mounted speaker. My only question left is: With the crazy vibrations of quads, where is a good place to mount, and are there any tricks to help a standard truck cb last in these conditions? (My only plan right now is to stick with a very inexpensive radio so it is easily and cheaply replaced, but I'm concerned about reliability.) Thoughts?

Thanks for all the replies, I'm thinking about going with the helmet mounted external speaker, with either a good handheld or a conventional cb. Ya'll have been real helpful.

I cant think of any pre mad things you could use.. how ever if you are handy with a soldiering gun and have a bit of patience. I don't think it would be to hard to modify a CB mic to use in a helmet. the mic element has typically two wires that could be extended and run into your helmet. A tiny hole in the foam in the face if it is a full face helmet and you got a mic.the other important piece to the mic..the key button could be mounted to the handle bars.the easy part is the audio you talk about not hearing..On the back of most radios is a plug for an ext speaker. a simple head set from an old walkman or the like could work.again a small hole in the foam near your ears could accommodate these speakers once detached from the band that goes over your head. Many possible solutions. Hope this gives you an idea or a place to start looking. If you are not handy with a soldiering pen..find a local CB shop near you for a fee they could help you rig something up or build one from scratch for you. my advise would be to use a noise canceling mic as it will help kill some of the back ground noise you may get while riding. Hope i didn't loose you. Any questions e-mail me.

Thank you..for the welcome.. My thoughts are that if you go with the modded cb..(much cheaper)..and it appears that alot of his friends are wheelin with jeeps...then it would give him more opportunity to talk to a broader range of people..ham is kewl and all but way expensive and if you wipe out you run the risk of destroying hi dollar piece of equipment while cbs can be had real cheap...there are expensive ones too( i know i own one) but for a weekend wheelin trip on quads, jeeps, or even 2wheelin..it could be done at low budget prices and with a pretty reliable outcome. Most Radio Shacks still carry 102in steel whips..one of the most versitle and reliable type of antennas(set it and forget it) you can get for around 20 bucks..not hard to mount to a quad..close to if not the same as a buggy whip..now you have a duel purpose whip..i dunno..for low bucks..broader range of people(no license required to use)..i think i would try a cb..but thats my opinion..good luck...am currious what you do, if you do do any thing at all..good luck.

they make "marine style cb's" basically water proof...water proofing is a concern..but can be delt with..a top of the line connex is not an idea for this type of application..a cheap radioshack radio could be easily replaced...durability..i am a truck driver in the dump truck industry..not as harsh as a quad's typical day but rough none the less...for about $99 bucks you can get a Cobra 25 or a cobra 29..they can be tuned up to get out quite far..but considering they are on a quad a couple miles probably would work..99% of your radio's performance is the antenna..with the 102in steel whip i mentioned earlier...you would have a great combo..rugged too...if you got a spring mount for it it would even help the durability of the mount in case of an accident..so..roughly $100 bucks(less if your not afraid of ebay or a used one from a cbshop) for a radio...$20 bucks for the antenna...and $20-$40 for any mounts or odds and ends...and a bit of patience..you could have a rig that could last a long time..and should for that matter...spring mount....typical mount....some of the various cobra radios....102 whip....plus coax...this should give you some ideas..dont be afraid to look around.. I KNOW there are cheaper cobras out there and other brands that could work..good luck...
Posted by: TruckCentral
Also many people still do use cb radios...because they are still cheap..yes the hand held walkie talkies are cheap but the durribility is still in question.. alot of my friends went with the cheaper(less than $100 dollar) ones and are not having good luck with the duribility. Yes Ill admitt CB's are kind of out dated in the fact that cellphone and all these other two way radios are concerned..dont be fooled into thinking they are outdated..many new models are coming out..much more durrible than yesteryear and with much better audio quality..yes it is true that 4-5 watts is leagal limits on them..you can get them boosted...from just a simple "peek and tweek" to a full 50 watt mod done to them...there are options..without going out and spending high dollars on linears or amps...with a cb..you are not limited to 3-7 channels(i know some probably have more now)offered by some walke ralkies..you get 40 on mostcbs now plus some have upper and lower side band..with more money invested you can increase that greatly...lots of options..all deppends on what you are willing to spend..

all this discusion..did we help? or are you still wonderin what to do?........good luck...

i didn't read all of this forum but, Anyone wanting a CB Radio probably should consider using a Marine type Radio. I found a radio at a Watersport company. and here's the link http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=23852. I guess just copy and paste to your browser. Anyway this radio is Some what water resistant and impact resistant. These factor will need to be considered. Like I said I didn't read much of the forum, so If I repeated someone sorry.

I was using the Connex and Galaxy as examples of the amount of power they can send out, the distance they can travel. No where in that message did I say that these kinds of radios would be ideal. Because soon as the radio gets wet your screwed like $400. Besides they were intended to be mounted inside the cab of a Big Truck. Yeah, if your gonna use a non-water-impact resistant radio go get a cheap Uniden cheaper than the Cobra, the Cobra definately isn't gonna stand to the first splash of liquid because of it's speaker holes. You can also get a little antenna that screws into the radio and elbows upward about 5inches, that's not gonna look like a flag pole on your quad.

There is a big difference in FRS radios, mostly in the receivers; they are all fairly low power transmitting devices, but the cheaper models have lousy receivers (poor sensitivity). A GMRS/FRS handheld will have higher transmitter power, but will, as a result, suck down the battery faster.
Another alternative that would outshine any of the CB, GMRS, or FRS radios is for each of you to get an Amateur Radio license. The handheld and mobile radios available for the VHF/UHF ham bands are not too expensive and the coverage provided is great. The licensing exam is easy (no Morse code needed for the Technician Class license). My wife and I have been using ham radio to communicate for years. I have been a ham since the late-1960's in high school.
For details, go to the American Radio Relay League web site (www.arrl.org).

one question are you on the radio alot? would there be limited use? you could make a cb mounted in a toolboxand mount a external speaker to it also. i know you should be able to get a waterproof external speaker for sure. if you do something with a cb a few things to make sure of. you can mount antenna anywhere even through plastic as long as you run a separate wire to the base of the antenna to get ground to it from frame or battery ground. also on thing to look for this is a must get a coax cable with stranded center. solid one will break from vibration of the wheeler.

What do you think about listening to music while trail riding ? I just love that ,and until now I have ridden on street only .
