I started on a Scrambler 500 when I was 14.

I'd say the Bruin, Prairie 360, Eiger 400 and Rancher 350 are excellent choices.

Posted by: reconranger

For example, a Rancher 350 4X4 is relatively light at 525 lbs. (real heavy by my personal standards!), and most utes weigh 600 lbs. and go up from there.

If a 110 lb. kid rolls a 600 lb. ute with hard rack on top of him..........well you get the picture...........

Start him out on a 250!

This is where things get ugly ..

Put someone on a machine that may be ok to ride it, but doesn't have the experience/judgement to be allowed on unsupervised. I see it all the time where I ride. The the kid gets hurt because of a stupid judgement call and it gets blamed on the ATV's instead of where it belongs .. with the Parents. The large UTE's are known up here as $12,000 baby stitters. Parents set their kids out on the roam on these huge monsters just to have them out of their hair. Then have the audacity to blame the manufacturer for making an unsafe machine.

Don't get me wrong however .. there are plenty of 14 year olds out there that would drive circles around me. I've only been riding for a few years. BUT, having said that .. I have the good sense to not try things I'm not comfortable with. My sense of danger/hazards is much keener now than when I was 14 and though I was immortal. Then again .. I've done stuff on my bicycle back in the old days without any safety gear that makes me cringe to think of now ...

My parents were correct I guess when they said "You'll understand when you get older" so true ....

what about a yamaha bruin 350

Posted by: CaptainQuint

It's not so much how much he weighs but the fact that he is 14. 14 year olds may have the skill and may be able to handle a larger quad but they haven't developed the judgement or emotional skills to handle a larger machine. They make all sorts of youth models. His parents should get him one that is age appropriate.

What about the kodiac 450???? IRS... auto for a beginner.... power enough that he wont grow out of it and need a new one.... and yet big enough to keep up with the larger atvs.... now the question is why not

ive had my quad up to the seat in pond water and yet to come out... why is this... because ALLL of the belt driven atvs are water sealed just like your manual trannys.... if u get deep enough for water to get into the belt... your gonna have water in your engine anyways

haha, At 11 i started to ride my cousins artic cat 500. My parents were talking with my family(we were visiting from out of town) and i said im going with my cousins. Well we got on the wheelers and went riding up in the mountains. At 11. haha. My parents freaked out. They didnt know i was riding. Ive been riding since then and never had crashed and i turn 18 the 7th.

My brother is 13 yrs old, going on 14 and got the okay on pretty much whatever ATV he wants. He asks me what he should get but i dont know a whole lot about utes, as all i have owned are sport quads. so i figured one of you would give him a better answer. He hates polaris's, dont know why, but he said he doesnt want a polaris so i guess they are out of the question. and i also didnt really know what size ATV to actually look at for him, he's about 110 lbs. so anything like a 250 and up would pull him around pretty easy, but he does want 4X4. He wants a powerful quad, but he doesnt need a KQ, brute, or anything in that class...i was guessing that he wouldnt need to go any bigger than a 400cc quad, i may be way off but i was just guessing. So what would you guys go with? he said he would drive anything but a polaris and mainly wants power, he's young so doesnt really care much about how good a machine rides, so my question i guess is whats the most powerful quad in that size range? 250-400? thanx in advance.

Posted by: cline

i understand what your saying, but anyone rolling a 600 lb. quad isnt gonna be a pretty picture. im not a big guy, i only weigh 160. does this mean i should be on a 250? he isnt starting out, he's been riding my DS for a year or so, he's just now getting his own now.

Posted by: cline

we went and looked at the bruin today actually, and he loved it, but the bruin 4X4, was priced not to far away from the big bear 4X4 400. why is the big bear priced so much lower than the kodiac? but we went across the street to the kawizuki dealer, and he loved the kawi 360 as well....hm....

Posted by: cline

i wish there were a bom dealer in paris, but now there isnt..i think he actually wants to see and sit on a quad before purchasing one so i guess bom is out of the question unless their is one semi-close to paris, TX

Posted by: cline

a Z-250 was the ideal quad i had for him, he wanted a sport quad at first cause most of his experience was on my DS, so we went a tried a Z-250 of a friends, and he HATED it. he said he knew it was gonna be nothing like the Ds, but he said he liked his other friends 250EX way better. But then he decided on a ute since he already has a sport he can ride anytime. I think he is really leaning toward a yami, not sure if he will be goin after the bruin or the big bear, what are the major differences between the 2? oh and how much different is the big bear and kodiac? I believe it was an 03' kodiac 400, but that is the other UTE has he had experience on.

Think you got it backwards there, bub.

You said he doesnt want a Polaris, but the Xplorer 4x4 (not made anymore) is a Great quad. It is essentially a 4wd trailblazer with low range. And those 250 engines can be made to scream.

They are awesome in the mud, can almost always follow my Sportsman. And they are fairly light, easy enough for a 110 person to throw around on the trail.

Definetly worth a test drive.

Lol you on a 90 would actually be pretty sweet. You could probably bunny hop it.

the manual shift is nice for a starter atver in certain aspects like it isn't as wild when the power band kicks in where i guess you wouldn't have to worry with a 250 at all. but it seems people who start out on manuals get the feel alot better on how to work the power band better then those who start on auto's. after i had my first automatic i am hooked but i am sure glad i got good on a manual for now i have bought a dirtbike for the first time later on in life (24) which is old in these standards. but the least of my problems getting used to a different machine to drive is getting used to shifting. as for which 4x4 utility quad any of them would be good cause i am guessing within a couple years he will be looking at something different maybe even a sport quad where he needs to be able to shift good. and dang at 13 he is gettin a new quad when i was 13 i was driving a 1982 yamaha 250 DX threewheeler and well that thing was badass i loved it wish i still had it. after roughly 10,000 miles without an overhaul that motor would still run her at 60 mph.

look, it dont matter what he likes, it dont matter how it feels. it dont matter how good or bad the quad is. it

depend on what he can handle..... 110lbs 14year old? kinda on the light side. wen i first got on a quad i lerned

to respect it very quick... i am the type of person if i dont have too, i wont. every one goes up the scary

hilll, wile i go around... i get there at the same time. i dont need to be crazy and get the adrenalin rush..

but this is on quads. wen i get on dirtbikes, i am crazy. if i cant cross it or ride thru it il jump over it....

and thats what you have to worry about. if he is on quads like i am on dirtbikes, then you have to worry.

if not, get him what he likes... otherwise get him whats safe. and a auto is alot nicer on ute, i have the semi

and is p!ssis me off all the sime.

ps the only reson i am crazy on the bikes is cuz i bin riding them since 6... started to race like a freak wen i hit my 9th summer. lol

i started on a magnum 325, it was perfect, but a trailblazer would have been fun, or like a raptor 350, that'd be sweet for a starter quad, not much power, but theres power there when ya need it, plus u can get him started on a clutch then

Posted by: spyder6

well i started riding when i was 12 on a sportsman 500 (yeah yeah yeah) it was my dads but he let me puts around the house on it, but ive always been that kind of daredevil, but look at me now, 'putsing' around on an 800

i would get the inbetween and look at the Bruin

Posted by: yellowrider250ex

Get a honda if your going to get a utility. like the rancher. dont get an auto with a belt drive trans like the prairie 360.

Posted by: WindmillAtWork

Get the kodiak. Automatic is the way to go on a ute! My friend got a semi auto and he even thinks it gets anoying. The kodiak is in another class above the big bear. If he can afford it I would go the kodiak route.

Posted by: garrett5462

get whatever he feels comfortable on. maybe a z250?

Posted by: garrett5462

300 ex? and i would go for a bruin over a big bear. the bruin is auto and push button 4x4 and the big bear is all time and is not auto.

Posted by: ackademix

bayou..bruin..prairie...rancher..

Posted by: RallyRider05

hey, i just turned 14, 130 poundsand for about a year ive been ridin my dads sportsman 400. i can handle it great on the ice and jump it about 15 mph off a 2 foot high shelf or ridge and do just fine on it. i also have more common sence than most people do. ive only had experience a few times on my friends lil 87 125 before that.

if he doesnt like polaris i recomend the bombardier outlander 330 or 400.

Posted by: Grizzman42

im only 14 and i got a grizzly 660 this summer for getting good grades in school. ive been riding it every day since i got it and i love it. but utility quads are not very hard for a young person to handle because they are really big and bulky. i can do anything on my grizzly, it doesnt matter how old u are.i think he would do great with a big utility such as a grizzly or sportsman and there are many reasons y. 1. they could go through a lot of damage, 2. they are hard to flip, 3. he will be very happy with the quad for many years because he wouldnt have to go out and buy a bigger quad wen he gets older. trust me, i would kno, i am just like him.

Posted by: Grizzman42

yea, bruins are great, but i beet u! my grizzly can tow my 35 foot boat! haha, no, not really, jk. my dads escalade could barely tow that boat, but it would be awsome if my grizzly could.

Posted by: o4Bruin3inlift

the bruin is good all around , i can pull a 10,000 lb boat with mine lol beat that lol i love it ,i grew up on 250's so all this power never gets old

Posted by: ihop

im almost 14 6ft1 255-260 yea put me on a 250 or like im sussposed to ride a 90 yea right

Posted by: ihop

yea i could control so many quads i love it like when my friends are like standing on there grab bars pulling and gass so hard just to ride a whellie for a second i just lean back and gas and shift away i go unless i am on my polaris then just lean back and press the gas ya that would be fun ill try it some time on my cuz lol

yull havet to get somthing over a 300- because nowone mades a 4x4 under that. go with yamaha or honda but i dont know if honda makes one like that so i do know that yam. does the bruin its pretty tall tho

Posted by: bbatvr

i told u the bruin was a good choice. the kawis dont hold ou the warunty so dont go with that. and the bigbear thing is the trany and the recent update to the kodiak. its got a new independent supension
