Argo's were meant to float, quads weren't. You're just setting yourself up for problems.
Posted by: ridinsmooth
maybe he wants a boat and a quad at the same time.

Be careful might roll over in the water. the air in the tires tend to want to make it roll over. happened to a freind of mine his qaud ended up floating but upside down.

No matter how well you think your flotation device is, water will find it's way into the intake and/or exhaust probably sooner than later and cause potentially serious problems. Not even going to begin to mention the havoc it will wreak on your drums, bearings, differentials, etc. I know from first-hand experience.

my dad is getting a 4x4 for the family to use. he wants to get a used honda 300 or something small like that. my question is what would ia hve to do to make it float? ive heard of guys putting basketballs under the racks and stuff.
this may sound wierd but a couple of guys with argo's made some nice trails but they go over creaks and stuff.
Posted by: moldycheese
sweet. thanks. would i need one in the back?
Posted by: moldycheese
cant plow threw 10 ft of water. it just doesnt work
Posted by: moldycheese
i figured i would need an intake snorkle just for safety reasons.
thankyou for all your posts.
Posted by: moldycheese
maybe i just want people to go "there must be a shole threw the lake" as they drive into the water.
Posted by: moldycheese
yes that is exactly what im going to do. HYDROPLANE A 4X4 HONDA 300!!!!!!!!!!! actualy it sounds kinda cool, if it could go fast enough

Ya get a bunch of empty 55 gallon drums, build an old fashioned 'swimming raft', (that's a platform supported by the empty drums), then put a ramp from the shore to the platform and drive your machine up onto it. Then you attach a rope to the front of the raft and put it in your teeth (Tarzan style) and swim across the 'water obstacle'. When you get to the other side, put the ramps down and drive the machine off. VIOLA! You're across and the machine is not water-logged. Save the basketballs for the court.
You're welcome...

Moldy, that's just wrong, completely hilarious but wrong.

Make sure you get your first attempt on video. I wanna see this.

Why do you need it to float?? Just plow through that stuff and dont look back.img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

I've seen several different versions of the same thing
Floats
I've also see pontoons that go on the sides rather than front/back as the above URL shows. Basically was a pair of bars under the floorboards hooked to inflatable pontoons on the sides.

Might want to be careful with that... they'll float sure enough if you stay on the throttle in a water wheelie but once your rear tires don't find any ground especially on a 2wd you be just a floating around until the four wheeler dies if you run out of momentum. ;d

hmm heres what i think u should do:
1. possibly buy yourself a argo
2. you could hyrdoplane like 2phast4you stated
3. u could just, drive around the water lol
4. make your own trails
5. idk where i'm going w/this but u prolly shouldnt do it, i got water in through my intake in wisconsin..it wasnt good

Despite the laughter and other things you are getting here, there is a way to get the bikes to
float, although you have to pull them through the water and you have to get wet. One of the old
3 wheeler tricks is to bring a few empty 5 gallon gas cans with you and strap them on the
bike before you cross the deep stuff. Just leave the engine idling when you cross to keep water
out of the exhaust and you will be fine. This only works in water you can walk in, if it is
10 feet of water, you will have to use some sort of raft, good luck with that.

what you could do is start and hit the creek topped out but make sure you keep going and try to hydroplane the four wheeler
Posted by: Polaris600
Might be a little fraaky doing that. Even if it does float it wont be at the top of the water. Some of the quad will be underwater and it could be reallly easy to get some in the airbox. Even if you did get it to float nicely, I would look for a snorkle, seal up the engine, and probalbnly flush every fluid (oil, tranny fluid, ect.) a couple times after every ride.

i dont know about the 4wd version but on the 2wd if you take a deflated basketball and squeeze it into the front bumper between the headlights and inflate it, it will float..... at least mine did

I have heard of this as well... two 7 foot long x 8" diameter PVC pipe capped at both ends. Then attached via rack extensions.. I mean if you are doing some serious cross country traveling then you would actually need this... the idea / concept is totally far fetched.

http://www.highlifter.com/foru...25%25/m_2108228/tm.htm check out this and tell me quads dont float!! there is a fish that jumps in the background at the begining. by the way that a honda 300!! sweet!!!

I own a 87 Suzuki Lt-f230 that has oversize tires on the front and rear. It floats like a dream and will power itself and steer in the water. I weight 185 pounds and I drove/floated it across a 3 mile wide lake.
It is really funny to see the reactions on boaters faces lol. Just beware of wake that might tip you over sideways.
It really is great to say, that 100 foot deep lake isnt going to stop me!
Remeber!!!!!! On a 2wd you will have to return to shore at a angle. If you do not the front tires will hit the shore and the back ones will be flaoting with no traction. then you will have to shift in reverse and the wheeler will die out and you know what that means.
I have a extension on the back of the exhaust so I can stop and start mine in the water with no problems.
I also have a 98 kingquad 400 4x4 that floats using oversize tires and sealed PVC tubes on the front and back.
You can buy tubes or even air bags on the net but they arent cheap!

Why would you have to walk it?? I have a suzuki lt-f230 and a 98 kingquad 400 and both of them float, drive and steer with me on them. The lt-f230 floats with oversize tires only and the 400 floats with oversize tires and sealed pvc tubes on the front and back.
Crazy fun!

When I first got my Honda 300 4X4, I took four empty 55-gallon drums and tied one on each side, one on the front, and one on the back. It floated like a dream, but it didn't go through the water very good. You could probably get some dune tires for the front, and back, and get better traction.
