anyone thought of taking your racks to Rhino linings or Line-X and having that sprayed on instead of painting.. they can also spray colors....

I used the bedliner on mine and it works good. You can also use appliance paint wich is a epoxy (tougher finish than regular paint) like I used on my wheels.

Check out my pics, my front bumper and rear grab bar are painted with it. I do not have a picture with the painted racks on it.

I thought about it but for what I do I did not feel it was worth the investment when compared to what I could get doing it myself. It might be worth it to somebody with a bigger machine that uses the racks a lot?

I just picked up a sweet bag for the back rack through RockMountain that was on sale back in Dec. I think it was $20 or something rediculous like that? It has a nice removable cooler inside of it that can hold a good 12 pack. Really well made too. It was made by Tusk if you come accross one it is a good buy.

Thanks for the warning! I will keep an eye on the attachment straps. It did pop in my head as a concern but figured I would give it a shot. For the price it is hard to go wrong with it.

WIth the Dupli-color spray on bedliner, it gives a slight wrinkle finish for about $6 a can.

I prepped by sanding with a coarse grit paper. I would use a 80-100 grit paper. Then do a quick wipe down with some thinner and let dry. That should get all the dust and grease off.

I had both my racks done at a Line-X dealer and it was $40 each.

Mine are sprayed with Duplicolor bedliner material. You can buy it in a spray can from Oreilly auto parts stores and it seems to works OK. I have scrapped some spots back into mine but I didnt sand as well as I should and they go through heavy abuse. Its not but about 7 bucks a can and 2 cans should do both racks.

I sanded mine down, primed them and repainted them black. The one thing I forgot to do was to spray a protective clearcoat over them and they eventually got all scraped up again. I'm going to redo them the right way next time. I never even thought about using the truck bed stuff......anyone have pics of what the racks look like with that stuff on them??

I pretty much just use my rack to carry an occasional 2nd rider but most of the time it just holds the beer cooler.

My brother bought a really good rear bag for his Kodiak that was made by Quad Boss. It's not really meant for ice & stuff but it sure as heck holds a lot of cold ones. Sure it starts to leak after a while but in the summertime when we're riding in streams getting all soaked....who cares about a little leak!

I would like to get a set of racks like are on the camo edition sportsmans which have the textured wrinkle finish. my local powdercoater has the wrinkle finish, I may go to him this spring to see what he would charge me to spray both my racks.

i've heard of people using the spray-on bedliner stuff on their racks and they did say it worked ok.

Since you didn't post a question other than the title, I'll jump in with random comments. My racks' paint was getting worn from backs, etc strapped on them. Last weekend, I used spray-on PlastiDip to repaint the racks with a rubberized paint. They will go back on the ATV this weekend. I won't be riding for a while, but I'll post results after a few rides.

I looked into powder coating and LineX. Both were too expensive for such a small application. The PlastiDip was $7 at Harbor Freight.

I checked with my local Line-X provider on that possibility. He indicated it would be $200-$300 per rack. They use a blast spray to put the coating on and cannot adust for smaller items. The racks are small and open, so a lot of the product would be wasted in the process. If you have the money to blow, go for it. I had not thought about the roll-on kind that you can buy at automotive stores. That may be a more cost prudent method. Though, it can be difficult to brush or roll paint and such on metal racks. That's why I opted for the spray can version of the PlastiDip. Who knows if it works. If it doesn't I'm only out $7 and some time.

Another option is the powder coating. My folks had their barstools powder coated recently and it was a decent price. While it holds up better than paint for rubbing, it will chip if banged (such as if the quad is wrecked or a rock hits the rack). I could see that being a problem over time, since my quad takes a beating on the trails with branches and rocks constatly hitting something.

Careful with that bag. I bought the same bag in December. After just two outings, three of the the rack straps tore off. They gladly accepted the return. I went for a more expensive, better quality bag. It's too bad, because I really like the removable cooler in that one. After getting it, I also noticed that it did not have as much padding as some of the more expensive bags. But, it was worth the risk. I hope your bag works out better for you than mine did for me.

Quick update on the rack painting. Well the Plastidip spray was almost a good idea. I didn't sand the rack and the stuff peels off pretty easy. I had some peeling from putting the racks back on my Vinson. Oh well, for $6 it was worth a shot. Since I used black, it's hard to tell unless one looks closely. I may try the bedliner approach next. Did you have to prepare the racks first by sanding or priming?

I haven't used Rhino Lining on my racks, but did have my floorboards Rhino Lined. It's not for everyone but so far I like it and would do it again. Cost for both quads was a little less than $100.

If you decide to have this done, make sure it is applied to BOTH top and bottom. This is because Rhino Lining needs a continuity of coverage to prevent peeling at the edges. That won't happen if applied all the way around. I think coating the racks is an excellent idea and may do it myself. Although not indestructible, it's more durable than paint and provides a little cushion also (~3/16").
