Use a voltmeter, accross the terminals of the battery. You should see about 12.6 volts with the key off. Now turn on the key and hit the starter button. What does the voltage drop to?
Now using the rope, or bump start, get the motor running, and read the volts. What is it at idle? What is it at 4000 to 5000 rpm in nuetral?
If you see more than 13 and less than 15.5 volts, when its at 5k rpm....the regulator is fine. If you see more than 12.6 at idle, thats good, but you may not, depending on battery condition.
How are the terminals of the cables going to the battery? Make sure they arent oxidized...just scratch them up, and make the contacting areas shiney, with a file or emory cloth or sandpaper.

A friend of mine is having hell with his Kodiak, I was wondering what symptoms you had when your regulator went out? Whatever happened to his charging system allowed him to pull start it. Then it just quit, took it to the shop, the CDI had went out, replaced the CDI, the original problem was not fixed. I think the original problem, whatever it is, caused erratic voltage to the CDI taking it out.
Quad starts with pull cord only, then display is erratic. Battery is new, but appears to not be in the charging system, or starting system. Stator was ohmed, everything else seems fine. Battery was even placed on a charger, went immediately green.
Wondering if this could be his regulator?

Sweet, all makes sense. Under the same note, this is some info, I'd gotten off of another forum.

my friends kodiac did the exact same thing, went for a run about 6 hours into the ride, machine just quit.. No spark.. He checked all the fuses, battery, everything.. What had happened he had a corrorded ground wire to his cdi box.. It burned out his cdi.. Put a new wiring harness in, replaced the cdi, and machine is running next to new.. Hope this helps.

He called today, picked his quad up from the shop, a wire had shorted to the frame, don't know which wire. But his quad is fixed, ready for a long ride this weekend.
Thanks for your input. =O)
