What do you use to carry extra gas along

Those flat gas tanks aren't all that great (IMO) they are slightly wider than they should be. Depending on what machine you have they don't fit the front without sitting on the plastic that goes around the steering stem. Also when put on the rear rack they extent too far forward and you end up hitting your a$$ on it. This was a friends experience using one on a Sportsman. Get the measurements, make a cardboard template and see how it works on your machine. He did not havae any problems with filling. emptying or leaking though. HTH

I use the flatpacks for gas and when overnight camping on the machines, I use a flat water pack also. I'm sold on them.

I have an extra tank on the back rack. Tank is connected into main tank so I can refill the main, just need to turn value on. The brackets that came with the tank would not take the bouncing on the trail. Had to add basket for support, but it also protects the tank and gives me a little extra room. Tank holds 3 gallons. Take a look at some of my pictures.

a large can of pork/beans will be sure to carry the extra gas along

Somewhere I saw a miniture version of a Jerry can that had a holder that bolted to the back of the rear rack. It was 2 1/2 or 3 gals. It may have been a Kolpin but I'm not sure. I guess I'm one of the 2 1/2 gal Wally Word guys. It's not that often that I go 80 miles from camp where I would need an entire tank to get back. If you go so far that you can't get back with an extra 2 1/2 gals then you need a chase team.
Oh, I've gotten pretty deep into my reserve just to see how far I could go on a tank, but by the end of the tank my butt was pretty soar. I've never had to add gas to get back yet.

I still use a 1 gal milk jug for my saw gas and a plastic milk crate, but that's just for around the farm.
Those are great looking racks. If i were home I would buy one right now.

Hi. In photo #8 and #20 of my photos you can see my set up. It is a Trapper Box...it holds two gas cans securely and has space in the middle for gear. I really like it. In one of the photos it is partially open and you can see the gas cans ( they come with the box ). I paid $110 Canadian which is $90. U.S.

How much do you think you need to bring along? I use two 2 1/2 gallon plastic containers, one on each side, and ive never really noticed they were there.

We just bought a couple Wally World specials and strap them on the front racks. I solved the expansion problem by filling the 'cans' up above the "fill to here" line and that stops the bulging (since the liquid doesn't expand - it's the air in the container that does). We're constantly changing elevation and this seems to solve that issue. Now, when it comes time to fill your tank from these, it's a bit tricky, but do-able. I've only had to add gas once. We've gone 80 miles in a day and I had to hit the 'reserve' to get home. My wife never had to (maybe because she's lighter than I am?). I like those flat packs, but man-o-man, the $70 price tag is steep!

And since we're getting a better idea of how far we can go on a tank of gas (and the more miles we pile up on the motors, the farther we seem to be able to go), we now only take one extra can each instead of two.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, they look cool alright, but I don't have the $91 for one. Even the cheaper 'Fuel Pack Jr.' is $45. And of course that really cool combo 'kit' that has the storage box, (called the "Utility Pack) is a mere $499. They must think we're all named Vanderbuilt or something. And that big cool easy to carry $91 fuel pack holds 3.25 gallons. That's Ok, I guess, but the affordable "Fuel Pack Jr." only holds 1.25 gallons. Man, that's expensive. Of course, it's quality stuff, no question about it. BUt... but... but...

I think I paid about $4 each for the Wally World gas 'cans'. Ugly, hard to secure, and uncool, but they hold 2.5 gallons+. So until I stumble on DB Cooper's cash stash while out exploring, I guess I'll stick with them...

You can see our 'un-cool' Wally World gas containers on a couple pictures on my picture page.

I guess you have a sport bike, eh Bryce? That would make a difference all right. I must confess that I hadn't even thought of that. Am I biased or what...? I'm not sure what you would do in that case.

I guess the fact that all my friends have Ute's kinda influenced my thinking. Back to the drawing board.

Hey PT, that thing looks cool. And the $55 includes the 'cans'. I won't be hauling a chain saw but that rack is impressive. See - there are still some good deals out there!

Man, that's a cool web site (in terms of giving you several good 'looks' at what he's selling). I'm impressed!

Tamarak makes a great front box called the FUEL-R. Has two small plastic gas cans in it. I bought the COOL-R which has two small igloo coolers and a place to set 6 drinks on. PRETTY COOL

I think that the advantage of the the rack tank was that you can minimize space lost and still use the whole rack for strapping cargo down to.

Posted by: quadduck

Depending on what the make of your quad is you could always buy an aftermarket gas tank with a higher capacity.

When I was a kid we washed out a milk jug and bungeed it to the handlebars. Boy was I dumb back then.

Posted by: quadduck

It is less than 5.00 for a gas can I just can't see risking the milk jug even not on a quad.

what about a gas can?

Posted by: tdelong

Just curious to see what others recommend for hauling extra gas along when riding for extended periods. We are planning a Colorado excursion and I was looking into getting one of those flat gas tanks for the front rack...I'd like to see what other people have to say or what they've used.

Thanks

Can be hard to keep a tall gas can strapped to an ATV thats climbing up mountains. Looking for opinions on the rack mounted systems like the TR Fuel Pak. I did a search and didn't see any comments on them.

Posted by: tdelong

I would say something that provides me an extra tank would be sufficient. You never have any issue with the tanks sloshing around or expanding or anything? I like the idea of the front slim tank to reduce sloshing around and what not.

There are occasions where I'll go pretty far out and would like to make sure I carry at least another tank to get back on.

Thats just what I was looking for.

Thanks

How about the Kolpin Flat pack?

It seems these can be secured horizontally or vertically. I haven't used them, but they look like a neat idea.

MrTommy, you make a good point. For my quad, I have no front rack and my gear goes on the rear rack. Even if I put a front rack on, then the gas can covers my headlight. So the 2.5 and 5 gallon gas cans you show in your pictures will not work for me. It could be that others are in the same situation as me. That is one reason the flat pack appeals to me. EasterEgg, you make a good point that is more subtle. Your suggestion about the cardboard template seems like an excellent idea. As far as the cost, if it doesn't work for me, it doesn't matter how cheap it is.

Posted by: BryceGTX

CanuckPt that really is slick. Can you mount it so it doesn't cover the Tail Light? It looks like it costs $80. $55 + $25 shipping. Nevertheless, that's still a great deal.

Posted by: BryceGTX

CanukPt, it is informative posts like yours that makes this website so great. Thanks.

ROGLMAO, quadduck you sounded like me when I was younger.

The five gallon flat bottomed gas cans. I never did fiqure out why carrying fuel a certan way became an obsession. Just strap a five or 2 1/2 gal tank to the rack and go!

Posted by: Snowwolfe

A 2 1/2 gal can from Wally World =$4
A flat gas container = $65 plus.
Duh?lol

I just purchased a rack from a guy in Oregon named David Akin - I bought it off of eBay - he custom makes them and they carry a chainsaw and 2 X 2 gallon gas cans (that come with the rack) - and it mounts on the rear of your ATV so it doesn't take up any room on your factory rack.

Check it out:

Here's the URL for the eBay auction:

You can also seem some photos of it on page in the Gallery - Work & Play!

I wasnt' sure about the tail light issue so I just went and checked and it only slightly obscures the tail light when it has the gas cans and the chainsaw in place - I'm really pleased with it. He did a great job and it is powder coated - top notch and it was a perfect fit and let's face it, you can't beat the price! In fact, I think you can probably get one for $70 - the last time I saw one on eBay it was listed at $50 and $20 for shipping. He's an excellent communictator and pays excellent attention to detail - I waited a couple of extra days for fabrication until he was able to track down a 2002 Polaris Sportsman that was the same to ensure that the holes in the supports were drilled exactly!

Thanks - I appreciate the compliment! These forums are such a great way to make a little knowledge go a long way! I emailed David Akin and he just put up a website for his racks.
