Bad grizz axles were an 03 problem only. Yammi changed them from the 02 models and they didnt work so they changed them again for 04.

I only have one word "GRIZZLY" !

Yes I've rode the kodiak and its a very nice bike.

Sounds like PS to me.Ive had a few polaris and have rode with many others and have never seen this and this guy sees it on to quads on the same ride...Sorry P/S.

I spent 3 years trying to decide and finally since the Polarise is 1/2 a ton and the Grizzly's issues have ALL been addressed and fixed including the speed limiter, heating and floorboards, it was an easy choice. Grizzly HANDS DOWN so I took the plunge and am excited with my choice.

I can already tell I want more power. I would like to be able to just power up the front at will.

I wanted a Grizz bad until I rode a King Quad. Do yourself a favor and test drive a K/Q before you buy anything. You may be suprised.

I have a 05 Grizzly, buddy has a 04 Polaris 700. As far as speed, I pull him from stop to about 50 mph. We havent raced faster than that. Ground clearance is about the same.
Heres what I dont like about the Polaris.
The brakes, you have one lever that works front and back.
The tranny on the polaris isnt as good as the Grizz and when going down hills on the Polaris, the back wheels will lock and slid, only 2 wheel engine braking vs 4 wheel braking on the Grizz.
The 4 wheel drive on the Polaris is "on demand". WHich means unless the rear tires slip 17%, you are in 2 wheel drive, no 4 wheel.
Radiator is too low and becomes packed with mud easier, which makes it over heat.
Weak frames, they use box tubing instead of round. Welds break easier on square tubing and some have had this problem.
Heres what I dont like about the Grizzly.
You only have 3 wheel drive, unless you use differential lock
Some have problems with steam and mud puddles. What happens is you hit a water hole, steam rises, enters the intake and it spits and sputters. Not a problem to fix, but I think for $7k I shouldnt have to "fix it". Mine had this problem, it s fixed now.
The axles are the weak link. I run 26" tires, scared to run anything bigger.
I rode several types before I made my choice. For my needs and style, the Grizzly was perfect, I love it and dont regret it one bit. He has pulled me out of mud holes and I ve done the same for him. We both are happy with our choice. The biggest thing that kept me from buying the Polaris was the 2 wheel braking going down hills and not being able to put it in 4 wheel drive. It doesnt seem to bother him but it was an issue for me. Sometimes I use 4 wheel drive and really dont need it, say for rock crawling. And the 4 wheel engine braking is wonderful on real steep hills.
If you can, go ride both and then decide. I dont think you can go wrong with either.

You re right sparky, yamaha did address the axles and probably are fixed. Just being cautious I guess. lol

Look at a KQ or a BF before buying any. Get a KQ and with the money you will save buy yourself some accessories.

I ride with a lot of people all who have different machines. All have Utes, there are a wide range of machines anywhere from 300cc to 700cc machines. All I can say is that we ride the roughest trails (boulders, mud, mountains, and streams) and we all make it...even the little 300cc machines. The little guys have a harder time getting there and it takes quite a bit of skill but they make it non the less. As for mud and snow riding I've found that it comes down to your tires. You say then why get the larger cc machines it's mainly for work (plowing, pulling loads, etc.). They are also faster and they will go through this rough stuff a little easier than the smaller machines.
I ride a Vinson (500cc) and it is more than anyone would ever need. It's quick, sporty, and you can't beat the cost.
Here's my take on the larger cc machines. This is only my opinion. I have rode most but don't have a lot of seat time on any but I have seen them all in action. Like I said before all my friends have them.
Brute Force: Pure power and speed but a little tippy
Sportsman: Too heavy and don't like the shifter
Grizz: A little tippy...not Yamaha's best machine
King Quad: Best overall machine with the best cost as a bonus
Twin Peaks: Great machine but don't care for the style

Most of the people I ride with either have the 500HO or the bigger 700 sportsman. These quads are good but I don't think they are any better than any of the other machines out there in those classes. I can tell you the two reasons I don't like them:
1. Both the 500 and 700s are way to heavy
2. Gear shift is a pain (Polaris don't mind them because they are use to it but if you try others you will see)

i almost bought the polaris 700 but during the test drive the eng locked up solid i couldnt believe it the guy at the dealer looked at me like i had ten heads come to find out i guess the 700 eng is having rod bearing problems and there not standing behind it too well thats why i bought the cat 650le i would shop around and also ask the dealers what kind of warrenty comes with it most of them only come with 6 mos

I don't know about the EFI but in my experience the grizz is faster. In a 300 foot sand drag the polaris 700 will take me off the line but after 100 feet we a side by side and by the three hundred foot mark I am 1 lenghth ahead of him. When trail riding I can pull away from him real bad just because the grizz engine is more powerful from mid to top end revs. The Brute Force would be an animal that should be a consideration as well. In the mud the 700 and the grizz are so close to call in capabilities that it comes down to the drivers ability. My Grizz has pulled out a couple of 45"+ moose with ease so that about makes it able to handle any North Amercan big game.

SHADOWMAKER and CURLS posts were pretty awesome and I agree totally with them except with the axle thing that SHADOWMAKER mentioned. I'm running the 27" 589 ITPs and have had some hard trail and mud riding without a problem. The 03 grizzlies were a real problem though and Yamaha has addressed the problem on the 04-05 models. I am in the process of installing the 11:1 wiseco piston and Stage 1 Hotcams camshaft so I will see how my axles hold up to this kind of HP.

How about a big bore for 2005.5 that would be even better. Like an 800 twin efi.
Posted by: Sparky660
Depnding on what year your friends grizz is they have a rev limiter when in DIFF-LOCK. The 03 models and newer have the rev limiter bot Yamaha installed a override button so that you can go over 22mph when in diff lock. Tell your friend to take a look at the owners manual it's full of operational info.

I'v rode both and obviously think the sp700 fits my needs better. You seem to be doing the same thing I'm doing. Keep in mind the standard racks on the sportsman compared to the grizz, the sportsman has a lot of room to put hunting gear and store other things. Polaris has a crazy amout of accessories for hunting, fishing, camping, etc. I hate to sound like a cliche (sp), but I think your best bet would be to go test ride both. I think the grizz is a little cheaper which you could use the money to upgrade the racks or get a storeage box or something. I'm just stating my personal experience and did not particularly care for the way the grizz rode, I'm not bashing it I have always liked yamaha but I REALLY like my 700efi.

I own a 04 Grizz and my brother-in-law owns a 700EFI. Before everyone gets upset and calls me Un-American this is just my personal opinion. The Griz has similar power as the Polaris unless your pulling something then the nod will go to Polaris. I personally like the way a Griz handles, it's light, smooth and effortless. The Polaris is ungainly and heavy. Polaris in it's attempt to be cutting edge has done some goofy things. I can't stand the single break lever on the left. I ride lots of different off and on road bikes and that is where your clutch goes! If all you had was Polaris quads I guess you could get used to it. I want to control all of my breaking front and rear. I know polaris has a foot break but the size and how it's positioned it's clearly only meant to be used in an emergency, which is kind of ironic because you'd never be able to find it in time. Their engine braking seems satisfactory, but is only two wheels vs. the 4 wheel engine braking on the Griz. If you start the two quads on a hill side by side the grizz will roll faster to a point but is very hard to get slipping due to all wheel engine breaking. The Polaris is really slow but the rear end locks up and so you have to tap the gas and brake to keep everything straight. The Polaris uses McPherson Strut instead of the more advanced double wishbone up front. Both give good rides and both seem equally reliable. I must admit that EFI at 10000 feet elevation works really well. Since my Brother in law uses his all winter to plow snow it's a good fit for him. By the way, he weighs in at a tad over 400lbs and takes that quad through some nasty places. The Griz fits me and my lifestyle better. Weigh the features of what you like and dislike and go with the one that fits best. I doubt you'll be disappointed either way.

Between the Grizz and the Sportsman, i personaly would want the Grizz. Its lighter, and most of all, the buds that i have that have polairses have had major quality problems, plus one wreck due to the "all wheel drive locking up when going down a steep hill"
Posted by: jimmypsp700
Get the SP700 EFI for the extra $400. I will be trading up to an 05' soon.
Posted by: batmanacw
My griz feels light and agile on tight trails. Almost effortless to ride and can corner hard with the right tires. Can that be said for the Sportsman? I doubt it.
Posted by: batmanacw
The diff lock rev limiter only kicks in when you are in difflock, I have riden mine in high 4wd at 60 mph. In low it will do over 40mph. It will only kick in on diff lock.
Posted by: batmanacw
The griz can be easily tuned to not be tippy. I think that the Kodiak is great, but I don't think that your criticism of the griz is valid. With the stock tires it is tippy, but with itp c- series wheels and dirt devil tires, I can slide my griz sideways. I have rode a 500 polaris and thought is was a good machine. It really didn't feel any more stabile than my griz. I even rode my friends rubicon and it didn't feel any more stabile. The polaris 700 is alot heavier than the griz and I would not own one for that reason.
Posted by: batmanacw
Congratulations, I think that you will be pleased. I was happy, but then I started tinkering and now it blows my mind. It is a monster waiting to get out. Have fun.
Posted by: silverbullet2005
I had the same trouble when looking for my quads. I had it mainly between the grizz and the sportsman. but then I stepped back and looked at the styling and function of the quads. I liked the sportsmans series and also liked the idea of the EFI, no choke to deal with anymore and no long warm up periods on cold starts.
Posted by: B200
for the money of a sportsman why not a brute force any way the polaris is faster i believe mudding capabilities i would say there about equal but the polaris is heavy so the grizz is prolly better
Posted by: biohaZ
sounds like a biased opinion to me
Posted by: biohaZ
i know a friend who got a grizz awhile back and i remember he was breakin it in still, but i remember him complaining that you cant go over 20mph when your in 4wd? Is that true
Posted by: BigBear03
Great posts. I hope to upgrade at the end of 2005. I am a die hard Yamaha fan but this week I stopped at a Polaris dealer and took a look around. OMG the Sportsman 700 MV! I fell in love. They had new 05 sportsmans in all sizes already with aftermarket tires, winch etc. I know... I know the grass is always greener on the other side...........
I hope to see a new big bore in the the 06 Griz....
Posted by: Sean99TJ
What zirks are you talking about???? I can't find any on my 700.
Posted by: Sean99TJ
okay...it is kind of funny how people love/like or should I say don't dislike the 500ho sportsman as much as the 700. I would really like to know why...weight? only 40 pounds difference in the 2 quads. They are exactly the same height, wheelbase, and width. Same ground clearance. I look at mine everyday side by side I could change the plastic body and they would still look the same. The only difference I have found so far...(other than the engine) is the 700 has a bigger battery. I think personally that the extra 40 pounds (which is not mounted high) is definately overcome by the extra power. I don't find my 700 to be more "tippy" than my 500.

I HATE the brakes on the Polaris, It scares the heck outta me when I go down a steep azz hill and the back end starts to come around, so I let off the brakes to get straight but then I gain speed so I mash the brakes and once again here comes the back end even worse...... I pray like hell I have a smooth landing strip at the bottom of the hill because im coming in for a landing after flying down it
If Polaris would make the controls normal like the motorbikes standards (front brake right lever, rear brake right foot and add rear brake left hand instead of clutch) I would be happy, but the one lever does all thingie just sucks for anything other than a groomed trail
I hate the tranny on the Polaris, the neutral isn't neutral. While your tires might no rotate in neutral everything else does, the thing feels like its going to explode when you rev the engine while in neutral and you can't "free rev" your always engaging the belt once you hit the throttle even in neural.
I hate the extra 100-200 pounds the Polaris has on other machines in the same engine size catagory.
I hate the strut suspension Polaris has, replace one and you'll know what I mean The Polaris has only one a arm and the shock has the axle and acts as the upper a arm, it's an old system and needs replaced.
I talked to mechanics (one a friend I've known a long time) that work on both Polaris and Yahama and not just one shop but 3 different shops and every one of them pointed to Yahama as being better built and more reliable.
I love the tranny on the Grizzly, shifts easy and has great engine braking and has 4 wheel engine braking unlike the Polaris. The Polaris free wheels the front end while the ass end slides, now add that dumb 1 leaver braking and now the ass end is sliding around and you launch down the hill. The Grizz just eases down the steep hills never slipping and you can control which wheels brake or don't. The Tranny also shifts nicer than my Polaris, I don't have to use my foot to hold the shifter all the way forward to go into low range while I tap the throttle (how many Polaris owners use their foot to shift into low range while feathering the throttle to get it engaged???? heheh comon be truthful )
I love the lower weight of the Grizzly, 150 lbs less than the 500 HO Polaris and damm near 200 less than the 700 EFI. I would have to put a 200 pound fatass on the back of my Grizz and ride him around to get the Idea of it BR>
I love the fact that Yahama uses auctual welded nuts and bolts to fasten things instead of those tabs Polaris uses, those damm tabs that fall off or strip out....
I hate how the Yahama clunks while going down hill if in 2 wheel drive, they say it's normal but damm it's annoying.
I like the Polaris lower swept front fenders, the machine "feels" smaller and you can see better, but the Yahama you stay cleaner.
I HATE the 4 wheel drive system on the Polaris, you push the button and hope your in 4x4, the thing messes up and you spin like mad then all the sudden SLAM!! it engages, or worse yet your in 2 wheel drive spinning around a corner or something then SLAM!! it engages and your like ohhh sh!t you were in a power slide with the rear end hanging out about 2 feet then all the sudden your in 4 wheel drive.... hahaa you can imagine that pwouch!!
The Yahama I can engage limited slip for most things and enjoy easy steering, very very rarely I need to engage full 4x4 but it's there and works !! never had it do anything weird like the Polaris!
I like the racks better on the Polaris, tube racks are out-dated.
so if your stuck between the Polaris and the Grizz, then it's not a choice in my opinion, the Grizz is better hands down. Not even close.
Posted by: Dirtydude
yes it is biased, It's biased because the Griz has impressed me and I find myself wanting to go on long rides often. I don't honestly think that the Polaris 700 would have the same "fun factor" as the Grizz...
I had full intentions of purchasing an 05 Polaris 600 or 700 and hadn't made up my mind between the two, I wasn't going to buy a Grizz because they didn't seem as popular and I was already familiar with Polaris quads.. I did more research and talked to many mechanics and decided to buy the Grizz (still gritting my teeth and worried about it). I told it exactly how I see it biased or not in my previous post. All quads have thier strength's and weaknesess, Polaris needs to do something with their brakes for techinical stuff and steep long downhills, and they need to reduce the weight. They also need a more positive 4x4 system with more driver control. Most quad drivers don't need a "dummy proof" quad. I want total brake control, total 4x4 control in a powerful lightweight package that durable and capable of heavy work . The Grizz IMHO does that better than the Polaris and I think it has a much higher fun factor while doing it.
Posted by: Dirtydude
Speaking of Polaris brakes, check this out hehehehe
I was reading some reviews and this caught my attention, pay special attention to the last part of the editorial on Polaris braking and decending the hills. I like the part about the Grizz's helping the Polaris down the hill hahahaha priceless
It would have been so much simpler if these Polaris' utilized separate braking systems. If the front brake system fails, you still have the rear system on which to rely. It has been shown that an integrated braking system is easier to use for a "newbie", even when that braking system has been proven to not be as effective on level ground and not as safe for climbing and descending hills. Could it be there was a conscious trade-off of a little safety in challenging terrain for increased sales to people who most likely wouldn't get themselves into a "challenging" situation?
Something to think about when purchasing your next ATV.
ohhh soo true.....

I need some help deciding whether to go with the 05' Grizzly 660 or the 700 Sportsman. I will be using it mostly for hunting but plan on doing a fair share of trail riding too. Which one is faster? Which has better mudding capabilities? etc.
Comments are very much appreciated.

I would buy any thing but that P brand if grease zirts are a good thing on ATVs all the brands would have them . Find a non OEM. shop that repairs aLL brand ATVs and ask him what they work on the most There are a lot of ATV brands out in the market try them all and buy what fits you and your needs

i ride with this dude who has a 660 and his buddy has a 700 and in muding there are like the same but in speed the 70 twin will top out at 73 74 and the 660 will top out at like 69 70 and the 700 twin a a lot better riding then the 660 so i would go with the 700 twin
