Sounds pretty ambitious.....I dont know your skill level, but racers in B class usually have their sh!t sqaured away, both for their machines and skill level......maybe you might want to try this in the open C class. The MX track will be rough on that Grizzly, dont tear it up in one race. Whatever you do have fun and good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Anyone ever run a utility quad in a MX race? I'm going to race the Griz in the Open-B class on the 4thy of July. All I need to do is put a tether kill switch on it. The Griz is pretty quick on the start so all I have to do is get in front of some of the less aggressive riders and I should be able to hold them off. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Up here there is only Open A and Open B other than the sport and mini classes. The A class is for guys who can ride and guys that think they can ride. The B class is for everybody else. The A class only has about 6 riders and of those maybe 3 can actually ride well. Usually 2 of those 3 end up taking each other out going for the lead. I could probably race the A class and maybe take 4th by comming in last but what fun would that be. It would be funner to beat somebody on the Griz. I only intend to race at this one track on the 4th because it is very soft and loamy dirt and the bumps aren't that bad. Also, the jumps are easy to roll over. I've been practicing on a simmilar track and I think it will be okay as long as I don't get carried away and try to be too competetive.

I would love to race cross country but they don't have it up here. At least they don't advertise it very well. I raced most of these guys when I had the Raptor and the race is won or lost in the start. I think the Griz is quick enough in the start that I could get ahead of a bunch of guys and be able to hold them off for the most part. I'll give them a chance to pass on the small doubles, but other than that I think it will be pretty tough to get around that big ol Griz.

It's the open class but I'm sure I will be the only Ute on the line. Can you immagine what would happen if I beat a guy on a YFZ, what would that do to the sport. It minght throw it into some sort of paradox.

Carguy, I wish you could come join the race. The Griz is pretty quick off the line and how would you like to bump bars with a 600 pound quad.
Posted by: Starky
Sorry guys, they turned the race into a "fair race" and cut most of the classes to reduce the time. All they had was the mini's and the sport class, no Open class. The next race is in Brooks MN on the 24th. It's a complete sand track. I think the Griz will do pretty good there. I'll get some pictures at the practice track and post em. I was riding with a bunch of dirt bikes on the 3rd. They would get pretty far ahead of me in the jumps and woops, but I would make it up in the straights and turns. If I can keep up with the bikes, I should be able to do pretty good against other quads. Besides, in the class I will race in, most guys roll the jumps anyway. Stay tuned.

I was thinking about puting a cooler on the back. As far as jumping goes, if it's a real smooth jump the Griz does ok, but if you have to land flat at all, it bottoms out hard.
I'm trying to get the sponsors to offer a modified and stock utility class. I think it would be a blast. Get some more people out to the races.
There is a lot of people that know I'm going to do this now, so I'm pretty commited now.

I did some (one hard) jumps on my 1998 griz, at I-81 in Greenville Tn. I jarred by teeth. I'LL
try racing my bud's sport atv next time ... good luck dude .... BDP

Greenville is in the northeast portation of tennessee. from knoxville take I-40 to I-81 then to exit 42 (i think ) it's the Jerroldstown exit and follow the signs to I-81 motorpark.

no balls ... just alot of fun ... my friend bob rides a 250 scrambler and even though my grizzly is bigger
he always out talents me... but slinging mud is always fun ....

If you can ride that grizz well, you shoukld beable to hold most of the riders off. I would love to see this race. And the look on racers faces when you spank them.
This kind of reminds me of a drag race event i saw once, between all these bad a$$ harley guys. When out of nowhere a guy pulls his honda goldwing 1800 yellow schoolbus to the line and spanks them all each time by 3 sometimes 10 bike lenghts.
Moral to this story is --Don't underestimate our big bulky lawnmowers.

i hope you win but you prob wont win

Geez that would be a sight to see. when you say you have jumped your grizzly, how much height and distance are you talking about?
If you write off your quad, think yamaha will give you another one on warranty?? I wonder if there is anything about entering races in that small print in the back of the owners manual under the "warranty void section"..........??????
ah, go get em anyways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anybody else think a 650 prairie or twin peaks 700 would be a better choice for holeshots????
Who knows man, maybe you will start the next fab of Utilty MotoCross.

Just to rub some more dirt in their faces, you should put cargo boxes and a gun rack on that grizzly. Could you imagine their faces if you won with all the accessories on your quad? LOL, LOL, LOL
if it happens, go down swingin'

But, but, but..........why mx?est of luck, but you know if you get spanked by everyone then you're really going to get laughed at. Are you tired of cross-country or something?

There's the saying that "It takes courage to stand alone." Kids may laugh at the unexpected sight yes, just like children automatically burst into laughter when a film is sped up so that the figures zip around quickly, but that's the way kids are. People with a bit more character might appreciate seeing a utility machine challange the track and see what it can do. And as Starky says, if he beats one or more sport quads any critics ought to be silenced right there. Good luck, bud.

Maybe he's just bloody crazy behind the 'bars. Maybe one of them will throw a chain.

hang on, hang on...you're not sayin there's gonna be sport quads in this race too are you. this is only a utility race, right?

I don't understand how a Grizzly is even gonna hold off gettin lapped. I mean, sport quads were made for mx, the have better acceleration, speed, handling...how are you gonna even hang w/ them?

I have raced my Rincon 3 times in 2003 It's a blast . The tracks are regular MX tracks with jumps and stuff be carefull on them they can mess you up. ours was a 2 moto format.
not doing it this year . I didn't run against any grizz's

Man, we race our Utes through the woods all of the time(I still love the sport guys-good group of people!). Hell, my daughter has challenged me to a race tomorrow, on her Rancher ES 4x! Just for kicks, fill your cooler w/ Bud Light-Or w/ what you Yankees drink-Old Mil(I'm a Yankee too: according to the good ol' boys down here-a Damned Yankee: I stayed!) Seriously, I think the Sp.Ute class is going to be THE class in "no-time". As much as the sport guys hate to admit it: We are THE class, in sales(yeah, I know, get ready for the barrage!) So, GNCC-Seriously get a Sport/Ute class together. Not just the class that Penland and Kiliand race in either!
ROCK ON, Ute People!
