I have no personal experience with this myself, but... I recall hearing some talk on the boards about the 02 grizzly heating it's carb up and boiling the gas. Caused it to stall and vapor lock. Something to do with not enough venting around the carb, I think. You might check with the Yamaha forum on that.

got a 02 Grizz, and can see all my mods in my sig.
I beat the living piss out of mine everytime, never had a problem yet. got about 1400miles on mine now!!
Yamaha's got a heat kit fix for 02-03 grizzly's and its free, its a heat shiled for the tank, shield for the gas line, and a heat wrap for the header. If you get one and it dont have one go to your local dealer and have him order you one!!
I've had mine vapor lock on my once but my machine was so muddy I think my radiator was complete blocked!!!
hope you get one, you'll love and never regret it!!

The CV problem was only on the 03's, in 04 they switched back to the same as in 02. As for the gas boiling, Yamaha has a recall out right now on that problem, they are putting on new heat repelling gas line, heat deflective coating on the bottom of the tank and new vented side panels like the 04's. As for the 28" tires, I have 27's on mine and I had to clutch it so I could get back to my stock power. Well worth it. Good luck!

Clutching helped quite a bit on bottom end, before I couldn't think of pulling a wheelie with the big tires on, now it is not a problem. I don't think I lost any on the top end, it's hard to say with the 27's on my speedometer is off quite a bit, maybe 6-10mph... I'm going to put my stock tires back on for awhile and then I can see if I lost any top end also see what kind of snap it has out of the hole.

Hey grizzlysarequicker, how much difference did installing the clutch kit make on bottom end and acceleration. How much top end did you lose? Thanks a bunch.

My 2002 Grizzly has held up very well and I&39;m approaching 2000 miles on mine. About the 28” tires, I would think you&39;d have rubbing issues (especially when the suspension is compressed) with them unless fender modifications have been made and / or a lift kit has been installed.
The infamous “gas boil” issue and its associated problem is really not a problem unless you do a lot of slow speed traveling. I&39;ve encountered it when mowing with it for hours at a time (generally 5 MPH or less while towing a 628 lb mower), or from dragging a lot of logs out of the woods (that I end up cutting into firewood). This has been a non-issue during recreational riding, because the faster speeds encountered while I&39;m trail riding create enough air flow to keep the machine cool enough to prevent that. Yamaha now has a “heat kit” available for 2002 – 2003 models for owners that use their quads in such a way to where this becomes a problem.
One point of complaint may be the snap on plastic side panels. Mine never seem to stay in place and I have to nudge them back in place from time to time. The older 600 Grizzly did not have this problem because the side panels were held in place by ¼ turn fasteners.
You may have heard about CV joint breakage issues too, but this seems to be a problem only with the 2003 models (not 2002 or 2004).
Finally if you want it for high speed play, although it rewards the driver with a relatively smooth ride (when compared to a solid rear axle quad), it does not handle as good as the Honda Rincon or the Kawasaki Prairie but once you learn what it is capable of and how to handle it properly one can learn to compensate for it&39;s sloppy handling characteristics…

I'm looking at buying an '02 Grizz that has a little over 100 mi. on it. It has a Warn winch and 28" ITPs on aluminum rims. I'm not familiar with any problems that the '02 Grizz's might've had. Any advice or problems areas with that model Grizz? His price seems fair and he says he's never had any problems with it, just no time to ride like he thought. If anyone knows of any problem areas to check or big issues with these machines, please let me know. Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks - Jed
