Both quads are excellent machines and both will give you excellent service. The IRS on the sportsman gives you a smoother ride and alot higher ground clearance but the Kodiac has more power and better acceleration.
Consider looking at the 500HO because it has EBS and double the power of the 400 Sportsman. I find the 400 Sportsman too slow and if you compare it to the 500 you will too.

I'll tell you right out. I'm a die hard Yamaha guy but if your looking for a smooth drive the polaris is your ticket. I'm not sure what kind of driver you are but the kodiak is a very capable atv. If your into spinning around and having fun personally I like the Kodiak. I find it to be a very low profile atv with no body role. I've driven the Polaris and the part that I had the hardest time with was the body role. I actually left the trail with it because I thought it was going to roll. I don't know if it would have flipped but I wasn't taking chances. I guess that I'm just use to the very direct handling of my Kodiak.
Hope this helps.

400 Kodiak over the sp400, but sp500 is way better than both!
