How can I tell if my front shocks need replacing? I have used 99 Yamaha BearTracker (229cc engine). After this weekends ride with my buddies who have Honda Foreman 300s and 350s I noticed my BearTracker rides rough compared to the Hondas. The Hondas I rode have a much sooner ride than my bike. I don't know if I need to replace the front shocks since I have never rode a new BearTracker. Or could it be my BearTracker rides as it was designed? Or do all small ATVs ride rough? Any thoughts appreciated. I guess the lesson here is ride many different ATVs before buying.

I would test drive a Beartracker and judge for yourself. Also from what i have seen the smaller bikes do ride a little rougher.

If the machine is a 1999, but was bought used, you might very well have to replace the shocks. But before you do so, you might want to go to a dealer and ask to test drive one that is pretty close to the same model. On the other hand, the smaller machines could very well just have a stiffer suspension. I used to have a 1989 suzuki quadrunner 230cc, and it was a really rough ride ( just for the fact that in 1989 the technology and engineering wasn't as great as it is now).
Hope this helps you out.
