The A/C would be a good choice. They are tough rascals. Suzuki makes the engine & some of their drive train components for them. You might check out a Suzuki dealer, they might have a machine about the same, maybe for a better price (don't know, no Suzy dealers around here that are worth a darn).
Another choice, if you would prefer an auto, might be the Polaris Magnum 330. Those have a selling price under $5000 around here. They are heavier than the A/C, and physically bigger. Not as agile for trail riding (really not bad though) but the extra weight, and wider stance help them handle a plow better. They have Polaris' improved in-line shifter (low and reverse are now a short, straight throw from each other) and a Park gear (no more relying on the brakes to hold you on a hill).
I don't think it is any better or worse machine than the Cat, but they are definately different. Check them both out, and see what you like better. Also check the dealer out. The helpfulness of the dealer can often be the difference between a happy or unhappy customer.

We use our Recons to plow snow and they do great.Last night we had about 4 inches and we plowed the whole development without any problems. We don't even use chains and it did great. Our plow is a Cycle Country Lite Force 48in. plow and it does a nice job.The mounting doesnt come with the plow but you buy it with the plow from the same company. You would be happy with a Recon or Recon ES.

You won't be disappointed with the AC 250!!!

The 250 4X4 is shaft all the way around. It also has fully independant suspension (front and rear) It is a 5speed (i believe) with an auto clutch. It comes in red, as well as green and i've seen them in Canada for around $4800. The 300 shouldn't be that much more, and it has the best tranny for work, triple range (hi, low, super low)

I think the AC250 has in and out 2WD/4WD. SO yes it's a good bike for the $$

Plows are made for a wide variety of machines, I'd reccomend that you get a 4x4 bike at least 300cc for plowing. A smaller bike may have enough power, but may not have enough weight to get decent traction.
This is only a guideline, as I've seen blades custom fitted to all kinds of bikes, even 3 wheelers!!!

For snow plowing you'll really appreciate the difference a 4x4 will have over a 2x4. I've used both, and 4x4 is definantly worth the $$$, even if you have to buy a machine a year or two old to stay within your budget, you'd be better off.

Memento~ Have you ever considered a Bombardier Traxter XT 500cc or maybe even the Quest 500 or 650.
I own a TraxterXT and let me tell you, with it's "true transmission" (not belt) it is one of the most powerful atv's I've ever driven. Just awesome low end grunt to this Hummer of an ATV. Do yourself a favor and at least look into it, or talk to other Bombardier riders. You be the judge.

All of them? I'm looking at getting an ATV and one of the big uses I have for it is to plow. I haven't been able to find good info on which ATV have plows made for them. Also, when I buy a plow - do I need to get a mounting kit as well, or does it come with mounting. My budget is not a lot so I don't think I can get a 4x4. I've been considering the Recon, Ozark, Bayou, Beartracker (not the Trailblazer because of it's chain drive). Of course I will have some fun with it on trails and in my backyard (4+ acres).

Thanks for the feedback! This forums is quite helpful. I realize that 4x4 would be much better than 2x4 and that a heavier and more powerful one is better, but I have a budget constraint. I'd LOVE to get a Traxter, but I can't shell out $7000. I have to stay under $5000 and would like to be under $4000. That pretty much rules out any new 4x4 (the Big Bear and Magnum are just over $5000). But I do have around 700ft of driveway to plow. I may have to wait so I can save up some more $$$. decisions. decisions.

the Arctic Cat 250? their info is kind of sparse. Is it shaft or chain drive? I would hope the 4x4 is shaft. does it come with an auto clutch (for the wife)? I'll take a closer look at them.

Thanks for all the input. I'm also told that there is a mod that can be done to the Arctic Cat 250 to disengage the front axle from the drivetrain. That would give me the best of both worlds! Also the 250 is the least expensive 4x4. sweet.

I did little research on the AC250 and it's selectable 2wd and 4wd. AC sells the mod for like $30. So it's now down to porchasing the Ozark or the 250 - and it'll probably be the 250! I'll have to wait until spring probably, but it should be worth it.

I got myself an AC 250. A couple of things sold me on it. Selectable 2x4 and 4x4 and having low and super-low range gears. Also the price was $4k on the nose. I have a couple pics in my gallery.
