Best way to hit mud.......WIDE OPEN!

(Just kidding)

You are best off picking a speed and gear that you can maintain through the whole mudhole. Too high a gear and speed and you could bog down, too low and you do not have enough momentum to get through. It will vary by bike but my Eiger does best in mud in high range 2nd gear.

Bwarndog - Agreed, if I had a belt. That's one reason I chose to stay with a 5 speed - no belt.

I have always had better luck in mud by going at a faster speed rather than slower speeds.

hey jaybeecon, low range would be best for mud, becuase it gives yo umore torque, and the belt doesnt slip as much as it would in high range, plus it gives the belt a longer life.

the best way is actually to let someone else go first, if they get stuck.....................

..............do something else!!lolimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

On other consideration may be: Not going alone.

I don't know what it is like where you ride. . . But up here you can get yourself in deep kimshee real quick if you decide to ride solo and take unnecessary chances. I would guess it could be the same in most locales.

I'll be the first to admit that I do juvenile stunts. But only when there is another machine to pull me out, or haul me back to civilization.

If you are 20 miles back in the mountains from the dirt road, which is 70 miles from the nearest town, you have a long way to walk if you bury your machine in a mud-hole that turned out to be 6' deep.

I can vouch for that.

On the other hand I find, at least in my riding experience, that I am the one voted 'first thru' when we come an exceptionally nasty looking crossing. Whether it be a mud hole, swamp or some other obstruction with the 'unknown' factor.

I haven't quite figured it out yet. But I do know this much:

Sometimes I am the first one to give it a try because they don't think ANY machine can get through, and they want to see me get stuck (sometimes they are right ).

Other times it is because they know I will try anything, within reason, if I have backup. They just want to see someone get through. Then they give it a try themselves.

I am not saying this to brag. I get my machine stuck frequently, when I am with a group. But that is simply because I do what we all do . . . try to find the hardest, muddiest, soupiest line through the hole. Sometimes other 'stock' machines can follow, many times they cannot. But that would be the same with any other modified machine out there.

I guess if you don't ever want to get stuck, go around

definitely low gear and gun it!!!

Yes, never ride solo. 2 years ago i got stuck on the 300 honda, was there for 3.5 hours, the bugs ate me alive! and there's never a sturdy tree near by when you need it.

If it's an auto i'd say low range if you got mudding tires (they get more traction at low rpm's) but if they're stock high range might work better because the faster they spin the taller they get, and the tred ain't to good on the stock ones, so momentum is key.

BTW galljc, how do you like the sp600?? was thinking of mabey getting one next year. (Polaris always has good deals on there quads-new)

Posted by: RINCON

Yeah the tires are the best out there for stock, or the best period. Plus the chrome rims look really nice with out costing close to $600 cdn extra. How's the power in comparison to a sp500? 700?

If you don't mind, how much was it?

Posted by: RINCON

that is a good price, for US to CDN dollars on a polaris you usually add $1200 or so. (sp500 retail 6999US, -- $8200cdn)

so $5399 goes to $6600, i've never seen one anywhere's that cheap!

I'm hoping to get one (sp600-blue) at the end of next summer for around $8000 plus taxes. ($9200) and that would be a good deal!

Yeah, big tires will turn a small hole into a big one real quick, but at least he'll be on the other side to tow you out!

Posted by: RINCON

cousin tried that once on a 300 honda, some city slickers wanted to race, bike did some gymnastics, not good!

ratman: i agree, if i'm with a group i'll go through anything because the worst thing that can happen is you get towed out.

With a belt/auto use low gear and 4wd on. On my Honda, I hit most holes in 2nd gear so I'll have enough torque to turn my 27" Blackwaters. If your sure of the hole hit it with moderate speed and hold your line.

If I'm unsure I approach it slowly test it out, back out, and give 'er again! (I don't want to go up to my neck in bog!)

You'll want to use low range and a moderate but steady speed. Low range will give you more torque and better throttle response if things start to get sticky. You'll need to have your speed and momentum built up before entering the hole, otherwise you may spin out trying to power up. If you eneter too fast you may find hidden rocks, ruts that could swallow a wheeler, or even a punk log!

Thanks for the advice. I really like my SP600. I went riding with another guy who had a prairie 400 and man what a difference the IRS makes. We were flying over moguls at 35-40mph. The SP600 chasis stays level and seems to float while the IRS soaks up the bumps. The prairie flew all over and you really had to stay flexed to keep under control. I also like the new tires, I think they are called Rawhides. They really bite into everything. I'd say you wouldn't be sorry.

Thanks
John

I got a REALLY good deal. For some reason the Hitching Post in Minneapolis, MN had the 600's for $5399.00 I wouldn't have bought one otherwise but I couldn't resist that price. I'm not sure of the power vs 500/700 but i've heard that a 500 will match it off the line but after 40-50mph the 600/700's keep going quick. I experienced this vs a 400 prairie but it was more like even to 35mph then the 600 ate it for lunch.

never let the guy with the biggest tires go through first...otherwise he'll wollow out the hole and no one else will get through. i agree with everyone else dont ride alone.

lol sometimes it sucks ridin with people. i went ridin with my dad a lil while back at this place where like 50 people were ridin n i got stuck in this mud pit behind this hill while followin my dad. He stopped out in front of me n we were goin pretty fast so i turned so i wouldnt nail him n i wuz on a hill he started to go n i hit the gass n fishtailed into a 2.5 ft mud hole. i jumped off and wuz over my knee in mud. My dad left me their not knowing i wuz stuck.... luckily the guys my dad stopped for helped me out but it slid in again lol wut a bad day. my dad finally came back for me and after a few minutes of ridicule he finally pulled me out lol
