You want to make it easyer on you when putting your bottom plate on, stand your quad on its rear rack and its a whole lot easyer.

I have the 60 inch moose on my quad. I picked the moose due to its heavy weight.

Posted by: hammer4

Which brand of snowplow would you buy? Moose, Warn, and Cycle Country all look like they have some good ones. Warn has 3 different sizes: 48, 54, and 60". Moose has a 50 and 60" size. Cycle Country has 42,48, 50, 52, and 60" sizes. Plus CC has a Plastic Plow in 48 and 60" sizes. I have a large driveway, so I would probably get the 60" blade. I will be buying a Quad in a few months, so I am trying to get some ideas beforehand. I am looking at the Rubicon, Grizzly 660, and the Quest 650. Thanks for any suggestions, and info on these 3 brand of plows.

Posted by: hammer4

Thanks for the replies. I think the Moose County plow will be my choice. As for a Quad, I am still doing my research! Although my brother has a Beige Grizzly that he really likes. I will just have to thoroughly check them all out.

Posted by: hammer4

Rubidude, Thanks for pointing that out about the County Blade. The regular 60" blade would probably work alot better. Our driveway is about 470 ft. long and has a incline to it that requires that you better have a 4 wheel drive to get up it in the winter! I doubt that I would use the plow to do any confined clearing, just mostly long driveways. I have driven my brothers 660 Grizzly, and I was impressed with the smooth ride and acceleration. I need to test out the Rubicon and Quest yet, before I make up my mind. Thanks for your input on the matter.Hopefully if all goes as planned, I will be riding, etc. by June or July!

Posted by: hammer4

Frogman 28, I see that you own a Beige 660 Grizzly. That is the same color that my brother has. How do you like it so far? My brother really likes his. The only gripe he had with his was that it is a little cold-blooded. I drove it, and it rides really nice, and it has snappy acceleration. It is becoming a tough decision for me to try and decide on a Grizzly 660, a Quest 650, or a Rubicon 500. I know the Grizz would ride the nicest, with the Quest 2nd, and then the Rubicon. I will be getting one hopefully by June or July!

What makes the Polaris plow so much better than the Moose plow?

Posted by: hammer4

Yes, It sounds like you had quite an adventure there!Nice to have a winch handy when you need it. If not a winch, another alternative would be in using a come-a-long. All in all, I was impressed with my brother's Grizz when I drove it! Very nice. I might be getting one in a month or so. It is one of the 3 quads that I have been considering buying.

Posted by: hammer4

Grog, No Thanks I already have a JD LawnTractor to ride. I am looking for a new Quad, not a lawntractor. Have you ever driven a Quest? Don't knock it till you try it. I am sure it would be a great Quad to consider if you would be using it for snowplowing, and pulling a plow, etc. As for speed, I have read that it is just as fast as a Sportsman 700, Grizzly 660, Prairie 650. Tell me how many lawntractors are that fast!!??img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> LOL (Laughing out Loud) or (Land O' Lakes!)img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Posted by: hammer4

Grog, Yes, I have heard people say they don't like that step-thru design. It is different, but you can put a bag on that center console and carry stuff, as well as put a lot of things in that big front storage compartment. To each his own right? If everyone all liked the same things I guess this world would be pretty boring!I still have to look some quads over well before I make up my mind. At least decide what will suit me the best for my applications.

Posted by: hammer4

After I left the Polaris Dealer yesterday, I took a look at their plow setups in their 2002 catalog, and I have to say that the Sportsman Deluxe Plow System looks like it is a great setup. It looks easy to attach and detach to the ATV. If I would get a Sportsman, this would be the way to go.

Well, I see this old thread is still alive! I have had the Moose 60" County Plow for over 3 yrs. now, and have to say It works very well. No complaints whatsoever. I used to use my winch to lift and lower it, but now I use a manual lift that works just fine.

Posted by: Rubidude

Of the three, I would go with the Moose. Simply because I own one now, and am very satisfied. Moose are just very well built and sturdy plows. The Warn and CC seem to want to emphasize on light weight more than anything. Personally, I want the heavier one. Light blades seem to want to "ride up" on wet and packed snow instead of staying on the ground where you want them.

Posted by: Rubidude

The County plow is nice, but remember...it's designed to be used in one direction only because of the wing design. It's great for big spaces, but if you think you may have a need to swivel the blade at all, you may want to consider the regular plow.

As for the blade width, any of the machines you mentioned (I personally would recommend the Rubi :-D) will easily handle a 60" blade. The only issue you may need to consider would be whether or not you might need to plow in a more confined area, like sidewalks. In that case, the 50" may work better.

Don't choose a quad because someone you know "has one and likes his". You'd be doing yourself a big favor to get out there and check out all the options. Some ATV's just fit and "feel" better than others. Ergonomics is important if you're going to be spending several hours in the saddle.

Posted by: Rubidude

expedition00...You apparently haven't had any experience with Moose plows. They most definitely are not crap. Does anyone know who makes the Polaris plow?

Posted by: MUDDY4LIFE

I been using the 60 inch Lite Force plow since 2002 and its made by Cycle Country. It angles to the left or right and I lift it with my winch.I usually do about 10 driveways in my neighborhood and this plow is now on its 3rd differant ATV.

I'd buy another one in a heart beat.

Posted by: Grog

I have a 60 in cycle country on my rancher and believe me the thing is not lite.. have the manual lift and also have the winch for lifting can use either one at any time you want too. get more lift out of the winch.posts like these are very tough because everyone has an opinion. i would go with what you feel comfortable with. and as for the Quest.... If you like riding a lawn tractor that is cool too.

Posted by: Grog

I spose if you are going for the all work route then the quest would be a good choice. looked at them b4 i bought my rancher and i wanted a more of a fun work machine. everything that i read about the quest says it is a power house but if you want to have some fun with a machine then buy something else. I just think it looks like a riding lawnmower that is all.

Posted by: monteSS

I went with a warn I didn't like the mounts on Cycle country they where low and kinda CHEESE for mine.

Posted by: delta

I would also recommend the Moose. I bought a 60" Moose for $350 (complete) from my AC dealer, and I installed it on my '02 500i auto. The Moose is extremely well-built. The AC has no problem pushing the snow with this plow, and I can even plow up hills with this thing! Depending on just how much use the plow will see, you may want to check into one of the 'county' style plows. I looked at AC, Warn, Cycle Country and Kimpex plows, and I felt the Moose was superior to all - noticeably much more heavy-duty. I wondered if I should get the 50" or 60" and I am glad I went with the 60". The only thing I would have done different is get the 'county' plow blade. I can clear my 250' driveway in 15 minutes with this plow, it used to take me more than an hour with my Honda snowblower. I use a Warn 2500 winch to raise & lower the blade, and I am happy with this setup; others will say get the 'manual' lift to save your winch. Rubidude was right about lightweight plows 'riding up' on packed snow. Honestly, I hope we get blasted with snow this year, cuz I cant wait to slap that plow on and have fun! BTW, I would say get the Griz (of the 3 that you mentioned), but dont overlook the Arctic Cat models.

470 feet of driveway + Minnesota winter = lot of snow to move :-)

Posted by: delta

Mountaincat - The mount I'm using is the Moose mount for the AC 500i. I got the part number off the Moose website. The plow kit consists of two components: the blade kit, and the mount kit (which includes the plate that attaches to the bottom of the AC frame, and the universal pushtube kit). I dont have the Moose part number for the AC 500i plate, but I can get it if you cant find it. This plate bolts onto the bottom of the frame, and is held on by 4 HD bolts that replace the bolts holding on the footrests. It is a real *&^%$ to get on there by yourself.

Posted by: delta

Mountaincat - Let me make one correction: the plow kit has three components. 1. Blade kit; 2. Universal pushtube kit; 3. Mount kit. I can get you the part numbers if you cant find them. :-)

Yes, this thread is 3 years old. So is my Moose 60" plow. But it is still kicking a$$ and performing perfectly. I have plowed my driveway more than 100 times with this thing and it is still as effective as ever. I have had the Warn winch motor come unglued (caught it just in time; the loud noise gave it away, I just removed it and re-assembled it with the original components). I've been through one complete set of plow scraper pins (?) and my scraper edge has rounded corners (I've read that it can be flipped around for extended life). My winch cable has a few loose strands hanging off, nothing to worry over. This setup has proven to be WELL worth it's original cost and then some....Some helpful tips: I've added a winch hook with a 'gate', to keep the winch cable from falling off the lift loop when the blade is a little more than fully lowered....I have added zip ties to the snap pins that hold the scraper pins (the pins that adjust the height of the scraper blade) cuz my 589 Titan MT's will occasionally catch the snap pin when the blade is at full angle, flipping the snap pin off, and I would lose the entire scraper pin, washer & rubber damper assembly (I knew that metal detector I bought would come in handy!)...I would DEFINITELY get the county blade in the future, cuz 80% of your plowing is with the blade angled and it just makes sense...I can get plenty of speed with my AC 500i for 'throwing' snow while plowing angled...I have used this setup to create snowpiles higher than my truck, never at a loss for power. I must commend Moose for the absolute ruggedness of their design. I have smashed into many curbs, lawns and other obstacles but have never damaged the setup. I am certain that there are many others who can attest to the value of an ATV plow....My final advice: If you don't have one, get one...:-)

Posted by: delta

Just keep cutting 4 feet off the winch cable every 2 years or so....It still does the job and is cheaper than buying a new cable ($40).....I got 5 years out of the first 4 feet of my cable B4 it snapped (in the middle of the first big storm of the year....I should have clipped it in the fall...Live & learn...) I clipped off the worn part, now I have 45 feet of good cable; I formed the loop with a couple of 'U' type bolts, it works great...I'll keep clipping this cable until it's too short to clip any more....BTW, the ATV is STILL kicking A$$ and I'm looking 4 snow.....THANK U AC!!!

Hammer4,

I bought the county blade 60" and love it. You dont have to plow or throw in one direction. As you well know, the amount of snow that you will be getting will not allow you to get enough speed to really "throw" the snow around. I am in the same situation here. We had over 300" of snow this year and it is still falling. Today the snow is gone, but has been snowing off and on for the last week. I HOPE that i dont have to put the blade back on till NEXT winter! The county style is multi-directional. I do like when the snow is not very deep, that you can get it going fast enough to throw, but overall, you are pushing it to where you want it to go. The only thing that i dont like about the county blade is that the springs seem week. What i mean by this is, when plowing the WET and HEAVY stuff, the blade wants to dive. I have talked to others up in this area and its not just my blade but almost all makes seem to do this. We (me and a couple others in the area) are going to look into either adding a heavier spring or just welding the dang thing into place. I would only recommend this if you are SURE of the area that you are plowing and not like me.....i have a thing for hitting that ONE stump that i sould have pulled out by now...hehe

Good luck with the plow that you choose.....and let us know how it works!!!!

my buddy had a cycle country plow on his Honda Foreman S and he beats the heck out of it! they have only had it for one year but just remember up here in NY we got about 3 1/2 feet of snow in a matter of a few days.

Posted by: MountainCat

delta what kind of mount are you using on your AC 500i for the Moose because I did not think that Moose had a universal mount out yet for the newer AC models??? I want a Moose County Plow.

Posted by: MountainCat

delta Thanks for the info. I am almost positive that the mounting plate for the 500i would work on the 400i because thye are the same frame and everything. I think that i will probably go with the 50 inch county plow blade so that if I want to push some dirt around it want be so bad!!!

Posted by: expedition00

it depands on what atv ur gunna put it on, i have a polaris 4 wheeler and a polaris plow, the plow is better then any plow on the market, moose, and cc, just cant take what this one can, trust me, if the brand of your atv makes a plow then get that one, its garenteed gunna be better then any of that moose crap.

Posted by: Thunderbolt

I have an Eagle plow and I love it. I can detach or attach it in about 1 - 2 minutes and if I want to go out trail riding where ground clearance is an issue I loosen four crriage bolts and slide the mount off. It is a two piece mount and the flat plate that stays on doubles as a skid plate.

Posted by: Thunderbolt

Thanks ! I never even looked at the date.

Posted by: Dirtydude

I have the Moose plow

I am surprised at how though it is, I have hit some things pretty freaking hard with the plow and almost sent myself over the handle bars many times lol

The blade cuts extremly well even on slushy, wet heavy crap.

If you have a winch though your gonna hate the dmg it does to your cable. I've already lost a good 4 foot of cable due to running the plow up and down so much. I havn't figured out a way to solve the wear it does either. I was thinking about rigging up a pully off the front bumper so the cable isn't making such a tight bend on the roller fairlead. Also I need to find a bungy system to keep tension on the cable so it doesn't wrap up on itself on the winch drum so much.

I got the Blackline and love it. I love its separate motor for the blade lifting mechanism. No more problems with breaking winch cables etc. It also has enough downforce to lift the front of your quad off the ground. I cannot speak for the quality of the Moose or a couple others....but I did look at the cycle country plows and they are a farce in quality of the blade unit compared to the Blackline. I got the Blackline at traxmotosports (or motorsports...cant remember) for $867 with a 52" blade. Its a very strong frame mount that replaces your plastic front skidpan. This new skid pan is included in the price and gives you the ability to stick a trailer hitch receiver it if you want to move trailers around later using the front of your quad so you can back it in with full control. They also have an optional hydraulic kit for changing the side angle of your plow. Its too expensive right now...but it plugs right into the electrical harness of the standard plow kit if you want to add it later. The side angle adjustment is on the same sealed keypad as the lift adjustments on the handlebar, so its all incuded in the standard unit and thereby easy to add later if your want to.

just to tell you.. this thread ia about 3 years old now..

Posted by: jonnyyellow

hmm... quality difference between blackline and others is deffinatly not worth the price difference IMO... but what ever you like

Posted by: 24houradrenaline

If price does not matter to you check out the blackline plow system it even has down pressur and the companey is coming out with hydrolic turn. Check it out at www.blackline.us

Thanks for the information on this forum. I found in very useful in choosing my quad and plow. I will share what I have and know about this.

I have a 2005 Honda Rubicon. I put Goodyear Mudrunner tires on as the stock tires were fine for easy terrain. I stepped up the size 1 inch or so from stock.

I have a Moose 60" straight plow and the mounting hardware. It was fun to put it together, perhaps 3 hours or so to unbox it and bolt it all up. Very heavy and sturdy steel in this gear. I leave the mounting plate on all year it lowers the clearance by about 3/4" with a couple of tabs that the push tube rigging attach to. The plate is 1/4 steel and makes a dandy skid plate IMHO. The only thing that appears to be not great here is that I belive it will have to be unmounted (at least 1/2 of it or one side) to change the oil. But at my use level this is a once a year activity. The mounting plate is held on by 4 "U" bolts so, not that big of a deal to remove.

I put a winch and winch mount on that I got on ebay from Venom outdoors. I have pulled the quad and about a 300lb trailer of firewood out of being stuck with this and use it to lift the plow blade. Inexpensive winch and it works fine. I'll get another one if this one bites the dust. Very nice guys to deal with on ebay.

The deepest snow I've pushed so for is about 4 to 6 inches. The Rubicon will do this real easy. I can push uphill too. If I angle the blade to the first stop and run at about 8 to 10 MPH I can create a "rolling wave" of snow and get some throw off the side of the road.

I'm very happy with the entire setup. I live in steep terrain in the Sierra and have about 1/2 mile of private road and driveway to plow. This makes fun and short work of it. I really do look forward to snow so I can plow. The only thing I cant do with the setup is steps and my porch, that isn't as fun.

The moose plow is heavy and I find that to be a real benefit. It is a really welll made plow. I've hit logs and rocks and it just bounces off, without damage thus far. I debated the County Plow and think it might be good if your snow is dry or you have lots of snow. The straight plow is good for me I'm in the Sierra and our snow at my elevation tends to be rather wet and heavy. The Rubicon has more than enough power to push the 60" and even at angle it clears a path for the quad to run. I run the plow straight for the parking areas and then angle to blast down the roads. This is one of the "no regrets" purchases I have made.

Thanks again for sharing on this forum, it helped me make my choices. It's not like you can go anywhere around here and test all the plows on various atvs.

My question to the forum is do you spread sand and or salt with your atv? If so with what and does it work well for you?

Thanks,
