I have a 1999 Yamaha Warrior and I really enjoy my quad. And for all those out there that say I haven't been where there was a 400EX, NEWS FLASH.
I have seen and watched a 400EX no I didn't ride and I don't care to. Because to me the 400EX is just something to keep Honda going. After all this is the first quad they have made since 1993. The Warrior has been around a lot longer and most of them are still going strong. And besides with a name like yours you probably weren't even thinking of getting a Warrior to begin with.

I'll start by saying the Warrior is a great proven bike. Has ample power and speed, plus reverse. However, it can't begin to compare to the 400EX. My friend rides a 2000 Warrior and it doesn't come close to my 400EX going forward. Running down the road, I can run off and leave him, in a drag race I can smoke him off of the start. If you are planning on Racing, get the 400EX, if you are just interested in riding along trails and NEED reverse, get the warrior.
Bottom Line
Warrier= great sport bike
400EX= High Performance
The bikes are different, they don't deserve to be compared to each other.

I own a Warrior myself I've outfitted it with works shocks, steering damper, and several other mods but I wouldnt consider it as race track worthy as a 400EX. I feel I have the superior trail machine (reverse is nice) If you want to race I'd overlook the Warrior altogether and go with the EX. You might be suprised as to the availability of a nice used 250R for around $3500 or so and it'd be cheaper to make competitive than the EX. Anyhow buy something and have fun.

It sounds like the EX is your choice. Like you, I ride with mostly dirtbikes. I have no trouble keeping up with, and actually outrunning them in many cases (especially in the turns). About the only thing they have on me is straight line acceleration, and suspension for the really big air, but not many of the bike riders go for bigger air than I do, and I can double everything they do (& more in most cases), where we ride.
Even a highly modified Warrior will not approach the all around performance level of a stock EX. They just were not designed with high performance in mind. It would require a complete chassis change (control arms, swingarm, & frame) + engine mods + aftermarket suspension to make it competitive which will cost much, much more than a stock EX. Then you end up with a tempramental race bike that's maybe competitive with the stock or mildly modified Honda's (400EX's & 250R's). Obviously not a smart idea....
The Warrior is a nice trail machine that is comparable to a 300EX, just a little bigger.

Now there's an intelligent and articulate post, got me convinced.
Please, grace the forum with more of your "wisdom"....

KiaserSosei - The forum stalker ;) Good point though... Apparently, and admittedly he's not ridden anything but his Warrior.
Someone needs to remind 1BadWarrior that Yamaha hasn't "built a quad" since about 1987. That Brand new Warrior (and Banshee) are almost no different than the 1987 models. Oops, guess I just did.

I saw that post in the Bomber group, just thought it was funny you followed him into here and threw that back at him!
Yep, I really like my old ATC's, some of the best machines made....

Some of us aren't afraid to dismount our bikes and correct a situation that needs correcting. I gladly gave up reverse to gain 11hp, better handling, and better suspension. Heck with with all that, maybe I wouldn't get stuck on that off camber in the first place...
In fact, in approx 20+ years of riding experience, I have gotten myself out anything I have gotten myself into without a reverse on any of my bikes...
The fact that the Warrior's design is old is still no excuse. The '85 ATC350X engine was more advanced and put out more HP. The only reason they have sold for so long was the lack of competition, the 300EX is similar, but smaller. For a bigger rider that wanted a sporty four stroke quad, the only choice for almost 13 years was a Warrior. There's your reason.

That blinking line back there? It reminds me of a view I had of my buddy. I took a sharp corner on my 400ex, and looked back. I saw him flying through the trees ( he was at that point off of his Warrior), and the sight I had of him kind of blinked...behind a tree...open spot...tree...open spot...tree. He tried the same corner at the same speed and didn't quite make it. We got the meatwagon and hauled him out of the woods.

So your saying instead of buying a new 400EX, pick up a used Warrior that you have no idea what it's been through. Throw $2000-$3000 in mods into it to bring it up to compete with a stock 400EX. So now you've got a 3yr old bike that will most likely be tepermental with those kind of mods when you could of had a new stock bike with a warranty
and great reliability. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??

WARRIOR!!! GO WITH WARRIOR

I WOULD NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING A WARRIOR. THE 400EX IS IN A WHOLE DIFFERANT LEAGUE. THE 400EX IS THE BEST ALL AROUND BIKE OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. THE DS 650 MIGHT BE FASTER BUT NOT BETTER HANDLING. IF I WERE YOU I WOULD WAIT FOR THE NEW YAMAHA TO COME OUT. IT IS GOIN TO BE A AWESOME BIKE AND WILL BLOW EVERYONE ELSE AWAY..... GUARENTEED!!!!

I think as of right now the 400EX is your best choice. I have rode it on an MX track and it id almost as fun as a 250R. But, most companies are coming out with new sport quads and if I were in your shoes I would wait or get a used Mojave or 300EX and play with it until the dust settles and you have saw all the new quads. If you get a good used quad for a good price you should be able to sell it for close to the same price you paid. Better than spending 6K on a 400ex and find there are better quads out there next year and loosing over a grand. Also, the Warrior is a good quad(I've owned two) but it is not a great racer. It does everything good but nothing great.

in the first place there is not comparison between a 400ex and a warrior

Most certainly go for the Warrior. Pick up a nice used one, say a '95-'97 for about $3000-3500. That leaves you about $2000-2500 to build it, first with new shocks & tires, then with major motor mods. Besides, what kind of dirt bikes are you trying to keep up with?? If it's a YZ400/426 it could be a lost cause.

Hey 1badwarrior, if I wanted to ride a tank around the dunes or my yard I would join the army.

Actually 86atc250r, This was his quote describing the ds650 in the bombardier forum under the tittle "bye bye to ds in the dust" . There is nothing bad about a 70's engine in a 80's frame that has never been updated. The 86atc250r, now thats a bad mo-fo bike , I still have my 82 atc250r,. just didnot have the cash for the 86 when it came out

I love jumping and riding fast,and i do it in the woods i have to try to keep up with dirtbikes going down the trails and on jumps because my friends have dirtbikes i want to race in a few years.i want something able for woods and the track help me out here thanks

I have a 400EX and whenever I feel the need for a Warrior I strap my 200 lb. mama on the front bumper and relish the handling. Try that and you'd have a Warrior!

Lets compare a 13 year old design to today, is that fare? Why has the warrior been out there for so long? Not because Yamaha Can't sell them. Let me know how you like that Xr400 Transmission with no reverse some time your hung up off camber or downhill with no wheres to go but backwards. If only you had reverse!
