In the desert, the absolutely most important thing you will ever carry is water!

For most day trips, I like the Camelback HAWG. It holds 3 liters of water, and you can put extra water bottles on the outside. For larger loads in cold weather where I need to carry more clothing, the Camelback Transalp. (I actually rarely need this...most of my really cold weather riding is done in the mountains, so I will be on the Rancher and can carry extra clothing and gear on the racks.)

My basic mild weather always carry list is: Waterproof Gore-Tex shell riding jacket (MSR Pak Jak).....at night the desert can turn cold!

Basic survival kit (fire starter, compass, etc.)

Toilet Paper

Energy Bars

Basic Tools and a spare plug.

Tire repair kit...plugs and CO2 cartridges.

Firearm. I like the very light S&W Scandium/Titanium revolvers which will take .357's. (This is always controversial, but believe me one day you will need it! I returned once from a ride, and found a large group of gang banger looking "Mexican skinheads" breaking into the trucks at the trailhead. You think I was glad to be packing at that moment?????)

Sport quads push start easily enough. Just leave the jumper cables at home.

You will need one cartridge to refill the tire and find the leak. Plug it....then one or two to refill it.

I have a post in this thread about how to carry tuff on a sport quad. My question is what do you carry with you when you ride? Desert and sand riding mostly.

My list so far is this:

1" tow strap ---(how long should these be?)
Tire repair kit with CO2 cartridges, ---(How many cartridges should I carry?)
Tire slime sealer
Pocket air gauge
Misc tools ---(other than the stock issue set)
Spark plug
Small first aid kit
ATV jumper cables ---(or do leave these at the truck?)

What am I missing?

On the topic of Camelbacks I can't tell from the pics on the sites how much extra space these have.

Which ones are good for day trips?

Reconranger, thanks for all your replies to my posts. You have been very helpful to a newbie like me!!

How many cartidges does it take to fill a stock tire?

I do like the HAWG!!

Would you look at this post?
When you get a chance.

See this other thread on the same topic. I have a link to PRM that builds "Cargo Racks" for Sportquads.

Might be what you are looking for.

I also seen a pic of a guy who made a rack that bolts where the front bumper does. He fabricated to carry two small gas jugs for those loooonngg rides. If I find it I will post it. I don't think it was out of aluminum, but if you are handy like me and can weld, it would not be that difficult to build.

I strap my camelbak on my gas tank, also put a cell phone charger on it.
