Well, at some point, you're gonna go over. Best thing to do, is find some place with a nice soft landing.
And just keep practicing.

You gotta keep on the gas, otherwise it will just stall.
Possibly, it's just one of those things you gotta practice doing.
Just give it half throttle and pop it, and see how it does. Make your adjustments from there.
You'll get the hang of it quicker than you think.

The z400 is one of the easiest quads to balance in a wheelie... (the balance point isn't half as high as say my yfz) Stop practicing with your knee on the seat... Try a few while standing up... then start trying them sitting down... keep your right foot over the brake... if you feel like you're going past the balance point, just tap the brake. I've gone to the grab bar before w/ the yfz... (went thru a couple grab bars that way) It's not the end of the world... If you're moving fast enough, you can tap the brake and bring it from the grab bar to all 4 wheels without having to get up off the bike. The trick to good wheelies is to start in a low gear to pull the front up via throttle and then quickly shift to the next gear to mellow out the acceleration...

I own a 2003 z400 and I've been trying to wheelie it for a while. Is popping the clutch easier or just punching the throttle.. the front tires go right up when I punch the throttle but my problem is that when I'm in second gear and I pull up I think I am reaching the balance point but when I do reach it I think I am gonna flip over so I let off the gas. Should I grow bigger balls and go past that balance point or should I do something else??
I also wanted to do slower wheelies just to get the hang of it but in second gear its not really that slow so please post and help me out
thanks

I havent tried to pop the clutch to wheelie but when I pop it do I let go of the gas at the same time I pop the clutch?? also will my bike try to flip over when I pop it??

thanks scooter I'm going out to try it out soon and see how I do

can I do wheelies in first?? I have been putting my foot on the grab bar and giving it some throttle in first gear and it will go right up but I cant hold the wheelie that long
also I have a problem the 2003 z400s grab bars are mounted on the frame so I cant buy a new grab bar..has anyone tried something that works if u can an 03 also?

Hey i would try to put your knee on the seat and your foot in the grab bar and gas it. keep doing that you will probably stand it up a couple times but figure out about the angle where you feel comfortable at and start sitting down and doing it. i stood mine up on its ass end about 15 times before i finnaly got it. but normally it wont fall back on you. But ya grow some balls. haha. you can tap your foot brake and it will put the front down a little bit.

practice on sand first. I never have to use the clutch to wheelie unless i'm doing a highchair(feet over the bars sittin on the gas tank). Do 2nd or 3rd gear wheelies and practice keeping it up in one position. It will get easier with time and you'll know exactly where the sweet spot is. You shouldnt have to use the clutch to pull it up in 1st-4th gear. Its probably easier to start doing it with one foot on the grab bar and pull it up and see where it balances and how far back you can go. the reason i say to try it on sand is because if you do hit the grab bar it will dig but not get held up on anything. And if you do fall off it shouldnt cut the hell out of you.

i stand up and put my foot in the grab bar thats easier and safer and i keep my foot near the back brake if u start scrapin the bar use the brake to bring it back down
just pratice and find that sweet spot and dont over do the throttle
have fun

and what do u have to wory about theres a grab bar on that thing isnt there??????

real men don't pop the clutch... balls to the walls and throttle to the metal just throttle the piss out of it.. and yea it get squirrley just first learning to wheelie... the balancing point makes you shit your pants at first until you get used to it.... but screw it and do it whats the worst that can happen

1st is iffy.. the lower rpms of 2nd work relativly easy...o and easter have you tried preppin the shocks? bounce all your weight on the back and throttle it when it kicks out... it makes the suspension go out and when it comes back its like shortening your quad for a bit making it easier to wheelie without having to pull back as hard

Popping the clutch is a little bit easier if your back tires have good grip but not so great on the engine. I just get on the throttle a bit to get mine up. I started riding wheelies on my 400EX when I was 13 and I went past the balancing point and have fallen but once you practice enough, you'll be able to ride right w/ the balance point. I'm now 16 and haven't fell for so long so you'll get it.

this is very normal to feel when you first start out,i learned how to do wheelies on a 2005 honda 250 ex sport quad and you will eventually learn to just feel comfy...takes alot of practice

yeah use the clutch! i stunt a 929rr and thst has way more power than a 4 wheeler. if you "pop" the clutch you have way more control. always cover the clutch and rear brake unless your doing a highchair or spreader. use the clutch people power wheelies are garbage! if you clutch it up and use the rear brake for stability you can go alot slower and longer.

what you got to do is staying the bog also i have felt like im almost going over and i want to flip it so i check the tire pressure and one wheel was at 5 the other tire was at 3 so you can see where im going with this.

Just me, but seat position has a lot to do with wheelies. The stiffness of the rear shock also.( the softer the rear the easier to get up and up to balance point). But the key to maintaining is using the rear brake as well as the throttle. Just slowly start moving in first and gun it while droping the clutch in second. You'll get there. z's are great wheelie bikes.
