You haven't really given us any info on your riding conditions. Really tight trails, more open country, track, etc.???? Tell us more.........

The 450R is my choice for open country. If you are on a budget, the Z400 would also be a choice. It's the best all-around machine out there.

I'd look at one of the 400cc machines ..... they are a good bit cheaper than the 450cc racers and for most people they have enough power to keep you satisfied.
The 400ex and the z400 are usually priced close to the same, so whichever you can get a better deal on would be a good buy. The z400 has a slight edge in HP and is a little quicker, but the 400ex is a torque monster that is awesome for the tight trails and big hills. Handling-wise they are pretty much even, though the z400 comes with better stock front suspension (rears are similar).
The 400ex has legendary reliability (though needs more valve adjustment) they seem to literally run forever.
The z400 is building a history of similar reliability (after early year jitters) and not too many people are having problems. Though it will be a few years before it can claim to be on par with the Honda, that engine in from the DRZ400 motorcycle so is has been in use for many years.
Some people say the z400 is better in hotter climates because of the water cooling, but many thousands of air-cooled 400ex's are still running in the dessert today. The benefit of air-cooled engines is that there is one less system to worry about breaking down, and as long as you use a nice like Amsoil the Honda will be fine.
Either one is a good choice IMO, you can't lose with either one. When I bought mine I tried to work the two dealers against each other, well actually 3 dealers since I worked the KFX400 angle too.......... The Suzuki and Honda dealer would not budge on their price, but the Kawasaki dealer was having a big Spring sale so I plucked it right off the floor that day .......

What DS2 said.
If you do not want to break the bank and are looking just for speed the Banshee is made to order for this.

You can also pick up a used Banshee for several thousand, and if it didn't come fast enough, you can easily and relatively cheapily make it faster. A big hit of 2 stroke top-end can be addictive

if you want something low maintenance then you should go with a 400ex because it is easy to take care of and it is a great trail quad.
